S&P Futures are trading higher this morning. Overnight, S&P futures surged 1% Sunday night, but have since given back those gains. Corporate earnings are in focus with over 850 companies scheduled to release earnings this week, including 165 S&P 500 companies. Fed officials are in a blackout period as there is a Fed meeting next week. Treasury yields fell across the curve as investors weighed Federal Reserve policy beyond an expected three-quarter-point rate increase in November. Asain markets sold off overnight after Chinese leader Xi Jinping cemented his control over the ruling Communist Party by appointing a number of loyalists to the party's most powerful decision-making body and getting a convention-defying third term.
S&P Futures are showing strong gains this morning. Bond yields and the Dollar is lower as inflation concerns have started to ease. There is anticipation that the central banks may become less aggressive on rate-hiking plans. Asain and European markets are higher and Oil prices are extending their modest gains this morning ahead of tomorrow's OPEC meeting and likely output cut.
Host: Ray Loewe Guest: Phil Schwab Description: Phil Schwab, is a fourth-generation missionary. He shares with us about growing up in Japan. He shares how he appreciates the Asain culture that was all around him. After completing his bachelor's degree he went back to Asain, to Taiwan for 23 years to plant churches. He then goes to Hong Kong, for four years to help teams get started in China. He then moved to Harbin, China better known as "Ice City" for ten years. He shares with us about the place he liked best. He then returns to the United States to minister to foreign diplomats in Washington, D.C. You don't want to miss this podcast.
S&P Futures are moving higher this morning as bond yields are cooling. The economic spotlight for Friday will be on the final reading of the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index, part of the reason the Fed opted for a 75 basis point rate hike at its recent meeting, instead of 50 basis points. That data is for release at 10 a.m., along with new home sales for May. Oil prices are higher and Asain and European markets are positive.
Book Vs. Movie: The Joy Luck ClubAmy Tan's 1989 Novel Vs the 1993 Wayne Wang FilmTo finish out AAPI month the Margos talk about Amy Tan and her debut novel The Joy Luck Club which became a sensation when it was released in the late 1980s. The Oakland, California native was raised by Chinese immigrant parents who instilled a strong ethic in her and wanted her to take advantage of being an American while remaining Chinese in her heart and actions. Tan found this very tough, especially after her father & brother died and she wound up in Switzerland at the age of 15. We talk about Tan's teenage years and her strained relationship with her mother which later became fodder for her first novel. In 1989 the hardcover book sold over 275, 000 copies, and the paperback rights went for $1.2 million. It was just a matter of time to get the book adapted into a film. The Joy Luck Club is the story of four immigrant families who are all based in San Francisco with the daughters struggling to emotionally connect with their strict mothers. The women are complex and have many secrets between them that go all the way back to their time in China. Each has a story about why they wanted to come to America and how challenging it is to raise a child in a new culture while retaining your principles and values. The film was directed by Wayne Wang who hired the best Asian actors in the business to play the Chinese American cast. The film was highly successful but it was still decades before an all Asain cast had a hit film in America (Crazy Rich Asians.) There were several differences between the novel which had eight different stories to tell and the movie which has just over an hour and 30 minutes run time. So between the two, which did we like more? The book or the movie? In this ep the Margos discuss:Amy Tan's background and the inspiration for her bookThe different women in China and San Francisco and how they all relate to each otherThe changes between the novel and the 1993 movieThe cast: Rosalind Chao (Rose,) Lauren Tom (Lena,) Tamlyn Tomita (Waverly,) Ming-Na Wen (June,) Tsai Chin (Lindo,) Kieu Chinh (Suyann,) Lisa Lu (An-Mei,) France Nuyen (Ying-Ying,) Andrew McCarthy (Ted,) Christopher Rich (Rich,) Michael Paul Chan (Harold,) and Russell Wong (Lin Xiao.) S&P Futures are lower this morning as the markets are digesting weakness in European and Asain markets. The cause for the weakness was Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's clear signal that a 50 basis point rate hike is to be expected when the FOMC meets in May. As a result, the dollar is strengthening and oil is weakening. American Express delivered a 25 cent EPS beat on higher revenue. Verzion has yet to release this morning.
S&P Futures are trading higher this morning, yesterday afternoons market turn around help to lift Asain and Europen markets to gains. Markets remain cautious on inflation news and the Russian Ukraine conflict. Earnings season begins next week with results coming in from the major airlines and banks.
So Pixar's Turning Red kind of just snuck in on Disney+ and I honestly probably would have missed out on watching it except for all of the dang controversy around the film. Given my love of pretty much all things Japanese or really Asain adjacent, I'm really glad that I did. This is an excellent movie that is so obviously inspired by the art style that I grew up enjoying that I could honestly leave this movie muted and enjoy just looking at it. You could just feel the Ghibli oozing out of this one. But that's not enough. This movie has an incredibly important story to tell and if you're missing the forest for the trees because your cousin's uncle's step-brother twice removed told you it's about a menstrual cycle, then you're missing out on a story about growing up and understanding your family. Is this movie filled with metaphors, familial disrespect, kaiju monsters, and self-discovery related to the Christian life? Yes, not really, definitely, and OOO yeah. Let's talk about it. Welcome back to our virtual living room, because we have a lot of race and womanhood to discuss. Alexandra and Lenya are back for a new season with guests and hard topic discussions, unafraid to say what they think and discussing what it all means. This episode covers the ostracization of Olympic athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka, and how when they try to do the right thing for them, their team, and their country, they get ridiculed and worse in the press, all for trying to do a thing while being a Black woman. And it doesn’t just stop with the Olympics for athletes, but they also discuss how contestants on the British Bake Off, and F1 racing, and anyone on the internet can be subjected to anonymous hateful comments in the name of “free speech”, and there’s a nice rant about how social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even TikTok delete posts and shadowban Black, Asain, and Indiginous creators, while condoning and allowing the hurtful posts against them. What You Will Learn: Namita shares how others' filters lead to comments from them on her lack of a “foreign” accent, which belies the occasional language differences that she sometimes encounters even today How people often have the expectation that Namita, an Asian woman, will be passive or quiet, and how they are surprised when she steps outside their expectations How Namita has experienced expectations around her ability with technology and computer programming entirely because she is Asian How the stereotypes Namita has experienced over her career have impacted her, even (and especially) when she doesn't fit the stereotype How Namita also experiences these expectations from others in the Asian community, and how people often assume Namita is her kids' nanny rather than their mom Namita offers her perspective on the increase in incidents of violence against Asain women, and why that race-based hate is frightening to Namita Why negative news headlines often reference the race of an individual when they are non-white but not when they are white, and how this impacts marginalized communities Why it is vital to consider the possibility that someone else's experiences aren't the same as your own and recognize your own cultural filters What advice Namita offers for anyone who is being forced to confront microaggressions and bias situations in the workplace Cultural Filters: Examining How Our Filters Impact Our Workplace Interactions We all have specific cultural filters, unconscious lenses through which we see the world. These follow us from interaction to interaction, from our home lives to our workplaces. Recognizing these filters is crucial for engaging with others more effectively, especially across the “differences that make a difference”. In the previous episode of the What's The Difference podcast, I was joined by Namita Eveloy, an expert and senior consultant here at deepSEE Consulting. Namita has a fascinating and unique perspective to share as a first-generation Asian immigrant to the United States who moved here when she was just eight years old. Namita has experienced many different situations of bias, microaggressions and other situations that spawned from the filters through which others viewed her and set expectations of her. In this week's follow-up episode, Namita shared how these experiences often run both ways, when people are surprised when she doesn't fit their expectations. These two special episodes of the podcast are all about cultural filters and how they inform our interactions, often unconsciously. What happens when filters clash, when two parties are viewing the exact same situation through different lenses? And what happens when you defy someone's expectations set by their filters? Understanding filters can lead to engaging in a much more effective way, in the workplace and in any other situation in which we find ourselves needing to interact across differences. When Cultural Filters Differ Here in the United States, our dominant culture typically places a greater focus on individuality, on determining one's own destiny. This isn't universal, of course, but at the wider cultural level we do lean towards greater individualism. However, in other cultures around the world, the emphasis seems to lean more towards a collectivistic culture in which there is greater pressure to conform to a unifying standard. So, what happens when these filters clash? Frequently, misunderstandings, miscommunications or friction result. Whether it is in how we communicate, what actions we consider to be “polite” or socially expected, or even in how we engage with figures of authority, we must remember that our filters aren't universal. What we consider to be “casual office banter”, someone with different filters might see as disrespectful or inappropriate. When We Defy Others' Expectations and Stereotypes As Namita explained in our conversation, she is often greeted with surprise by other moms when they realize she isn't her own children's nanny but rather their mother. Her children are mixed race and lighter skinned than she is, and so she is often presumed to be their nanny. These kinds of microaggressions often come from situations in which we step outside the expectations of others. Likewise, throughout her career people have assumed certain details about Namita's personality based on their cultural filters and expectations. As an Asian woman, she is often expected to be demure, quiet, great with technology, and other stereotypes, even if the truth is wildly different from people's expectations. However, this isn't always a two-way street. As Namita mentioned, when incidents of violence occur, the news headlines often mention the person's race if they are non-white but seldom or never mention their race if they are white. When the September 11 terror attacks took place, there was a swift and violent backlash against many members of the Middle Eastern-American community, and the news media made a constant point of mentioning the race of the terrorists. However, when a white gunman shot and killed 23 people in a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas in 2019, the fact that he was a white man wasn't mentioned in the headlines nearly as often, even though he was specifically targeting the Latinx community. This is why we must work to be aware of our own filters and to ask the very important question “can we consider the possibility…?” Can we consider the possibility that someone else's experiences don't match our own? What changes if that possibility were true? How would that inform our interactions? Recognizing our filters is crucial for more effective communication, and the first step is to ask ourselves, “can we consider the possibility?” To reach out to Namita Eveloy, you can email her at namita@deepseeconsulting.com or visit our website at www.deepseeconsulting.com. On top of that, he has a whole slew of accolades: he’s a board member of Delta Air Lines, an investor in a modern asian restaurant called Soji, author of The Big Fish Experience, Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient in Marketing and Advertising, and occasional stand-up comedian. The boys are forced into a rushed re-branding of the show as they have failed verification on itunes. The result is an awful new look, a worse sounding intro and poor quality conversation. Today, Dan laughs in the face of death whilst Mungo explains the new diet sweeping the Asain island known as Japan. There's also a quiz and other stuff you don't care about.
Andrew and Matt disagree over the topic of the continuation of the spiritual gifts. Sunday was spent at church and serving them fools up, Data Team style and later raiding on Destiny 2. JT: Friday he attended the Spring Kickoff event with NAAAP located at Ra Sushi in Addison off of Beltline and Dallas North Tollway. NAAAP is a primarily Asain networking group. JT proved his smarts by staying near the fire pit on that cool night. Later he went to Coconut Thai and had some Pad See Ew there. Saturday morning, he went to Snooze Eatery and played some Cornhole while waiting. Arthur: Had a riveting night in on Friday and did nothing. Saturday he spent most of the day out drinking beer with his girlfriend and some other friends as well as strangers. He started off at Green Gator in Irving, had some Irish Carbombs. Next he went to Bowen House (off Boll St. in Dallas) with the group and met his girlfriend "Amazon". The group heads back to an Italian cafe in Irving and has some more drinks. Deep Ellum is next on the stopping block to meet up with "Amazon's" friends. Arthur and Amazon uber home and get some pizza. There's A LOT of stuff in between, girls passing out at the bar, kicked out of apartments and more... you'll have to tune in to get the details. Segment II: The group delves into movies and roles played in movies. James Bond for instance, would you watch a film starring his female equivalent? What stereotypes would there be to overcome? Are there stereotypes to overcome? Is this taking things to an unnecessary level of political correctness? Past that, we discuss Wonder Woman, Dark Phoenix, Captain Marvel and snippets of other movies with notable roles. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/atozweekend/message
