Originally Recorded: February 8, 2025 Time to BRUSH up on our anime history as Andrew schools Amon, Noah & Lilac on the ways of calligraphy and dubbing anime from the mid 2010s. Yes we're finally resolving our original episode from almost 10 years ago and looking at the entirety of everyone's favorite series about art, backwater island living and precocious kids that help you get over your wall of mediocrity. Hopefully this time around there won't be any Windex involved. So starting today, we're going back to our own origins, and doing one of the very first shows ever covered on Dub Talk, but giving it its proper due. This is a limited series to honor our ten years of talking the latest and greatest in anime and English Dubs: DUB TALK RETROSPECTIVE! Our theme music was composed by Gabriel Pulcinelli / Ponpoko in the Distance. You can find more of their work at https://ponpokointhedistance.com/ and at @gabrpulcinelli on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook. Episode 111 Before and After Ambient, Part 2 Playlist Midori Takada, “Mr. Henri Rousseau's Dream” from Through The Looking Glass (1983 RCA Red Seal). (Midori Takada) is a Japanese composer and percussionist. She was a key figure in the Japanese ambient movement of the 1980s. Composed, performed, produced, Marimba, Gong, Cowbell, Recorder, Wood Bell, Ocarina, Tam-tam, Midori Takada. She performed all of the instruments on this album. The album was not immediately popular but seeded the nascent ambient movement that was growing in Japan at the time. Midori Takada, “Trompe-l'œil” from Through The Looking Glass (1983 RCA Red Seal). (Midori Takada) is a Japanese composer and percussionist. She was a key figure in the Japanese ambient movement of the 1980s. Composed, performed, produced, Marimba, Gong, Cowbell, Recorder, Wood and clay Bells, Ocarina, Tam-tam, Cola Bottle, Reed Organ, Midori Takada. She performed all of the instruments on this album. Brian Eno and Harold Budd, “Their Memories” from The Pearl (1984 Editions EG). Composed by Brian Eno, Harold Budd; produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. David Behrman, “Interspecies Smalltalk Scene 2” (1984) from Leapday Night (1987 Lovely Music). Composed, produced, and computers by David Behrman; violin, Takehisa Kosugi. "Interspecies Smalltalk" (1984) is an interactive piece originally commissioned by the Cunningham Dance Company. Yutaka Hirose, “Light Which Shakes Quietly” from Nova+4 (2019 WRWTFWW Records). Bonus track on this reissued album that dates from 1986. Composed , Arranged and Computer by, Yutaka Hirose; Synthesizer, Jun Tohyama. Takashi Kokubo, “A Dream Sails Out To Sea - Scene 3” (2019 Light In The Attic). Originally released in 1987, this track was part of the new wave of Japanese ambient music. By that time, Kokubo was already reknown for his synthesizer skills on a part with Isao Tomita. He turned to sound design and ambient music and has been instrumental in addition to creating such sounds as the nationally-used mobile phone earthquake alert and credit card payment jingles. Yoichiro Yoshikawa, “Nube” from Cyprus (1988 Eastworld). Original sound track of Japanese TV program. Yoshikawa was already a reliable session musician when he acquired one of the first Phophet-5 synthesizers in Japan. He quickly became a go-to composer for television and other purposes, such as soundscapes for museum exhibitions. Tetsu Inoue, “Low of Vibration” from Ambiant Otaku (1994 Fax +49-69/450464). Before I met Tetsu around the year 2000, I was fascinated by music such as this which had all of the elements of ambient music—slow and forming harmonies, spatial rhythms rather than beats, and a sustained energy throughout—without sounding at all like something out of an Eno production. Produced and performed by Tetsu Inoue. Kenji Kawai, “Ghostdive” from Ghost in the Shell (Original Soundtrack) (1995 RCA). An ambient work from the popular movie soundtrack.Composed, Performed, Produced, Arranged, Keyboards, Instruments, Kenji Kawai; synthesizer, Hironori Houki. Waveform Transmission, “V 1.3” from V 1.0-1.9 (1996 Silent). Analog Tone Engineering and Realization, Recordings Of The Dead, Shortwave, Field Recordings Made During Periods Of Highly-charged Paranormal Activity, Korg MS 10, Korg MS 20, Korg MS 50, Roland System 100 Synthesizers, Home Built Analog Synthesizers, Tape, Loops, Chris Troy; Digital Audio Graphs, Granular Synthesis, Microwave Communications, Psycho-acoustics, Tape, Loops Otari MX 5050 loops, Rod Modell. Experimental Audio Research, “Automatic Music (For Oscillator, Ring Modulator & Filter Clusters)” from Pestrepeller (1999 Ochre Records). UK release, limited to 1000 copies. Engineer, Serge Modular Music System, Sonic Boom (Pete Kember). Some interesting modular synthesizer ambience. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Raindust” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Some Way Through All the Cities” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue, “Ethereal Being” from 2350 Broadway 4 (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Composed, produced, and performed by Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue. Recorded at Bretton Hall, New York and Klanglobor Hödeshof. Tetsu was an endless collaborator. Here he and the wondrous Pete Namlook wove some ambient magic. Tetsu Inoue, “Kaze” from Inland (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Written, performed and produced by Tetsu Inoue. This was his post-glitch faze, which brought together, strangely enough, element so his earlier ambient work and glitch music for computers. Masuko Shinji, “Woven Music for Blue Steppe” from Woven Music (2011 Jagjaguwar). All music, vocals and guitar, (Shinji Masuko). This is a project by Masuko, who sometimes works with the Boredoms. It has a characteristic high but sustained energy level that flirts with the outer reaches of the ambient music concept. Caroline Park, “Grain 5” from Grain (2011 Private Chronology). This is a cassette release by Park, often known her for generative composition work and electronic improvisations based on parameters that she defines. Recorded, performed, and mixed between May 2010 and January 2011 in Los Angeles and Boston. Sarah Davachi, “First Cadence” from Antiphonals (2021 Late Music). Composed, Recorded, Performed, Mellotron (bass flute, recorder, oboe), Tape Echo, Sarah Davachi. A recent ambient work by this contemporary experimenter. In the background: An example of ambient music from the program Droneo by Henry Lowengard, which produces self-generating ambient music on a smart phone. “Droneo 1.5 vanDelay and Ape,” (5:25). Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. Seirei no Moribito is a classic example of a classic anime that time has unfortunately left behind in wider fandom. This is a story of fighting for what you believe in and protecting what you think is right even if it will likely cost you everything you hold dear. How far would you go for a stranger? And on the production side, I think y'all will find it interesting to learn how this historical fantasy action drama is closely tied to its genre opposite: Ghost in the Shell As well as the animation techniques further refined by Production I.G. that paved the way for their catalog today. Speaking of being left behind... I briefly talk about the absorption Rightstufanime into the Crunchyroll Store, my thoughts on why this is not good for the anime community, and where we might be headed. You can use code "thankyou" for 15% off your entire order before October 10, 2023. Musical tracks featured in this episode: "Shine" - L'Arc En Ciel (vocals by Hyde) "Nahji no Uta" - composed by Kenji Kawai "Omoi Haruka" - composed by Kenji Kawai *minor redaction- I bought Moribito on blu-ray the weekend before this episode went live because Sentai Filmworks had a weekend fire sale

The philosophical wanderings of GHOST IN THE SHELL are exactly what give its plot – occasionally convoluted and hard to follow – a safe cushion on which to land. The conclusions it draws about the creation and maintenance of identity are mirrored in Motoko, a cybernetic humanoid perfected by the Japanese government, and the Puppet Master, the sentient amalgam of networked information she's tasked with hunting down.
Let's get into that "Train Heist" cue with Dr. Frank Lehman! In this episode, we discuss the sheer density of the Solo score, modulation as an effective tool to generate intensity (Frank counted 21 key changes in 5 minutes), Powell's dramatic usage of driving percussion, and the orchestration details that feel like "Williams's unique fingerprints but with a Powell filter." Then, we dig into what is arguably the most surprising part of this entire score: the music for Enfys Nest, which features Bulgarian singing. Needless to say, there are tons of musical happenings in minutes 31-35 of Solo: A Star Story! Discussion Guide: 00:00 - Hello there! 01:21 - What stands out to you, on a big picture level, in these minutes? 03:22 - 21 key changes 07:34 - Listening to the beginning of the train heist scene 14:58 - Is "Train Heist" a set piece theme? 19:00 - Talking "Corellia Chase", Zimmerisms, percussion obbligato, piano arrangement, etc 29:19 - Lush, planing, chromatic string part foreshadowing Chicken in the Pot? 39:16 - Beckett's Gang theme in diminution. 44:26 - Imperials motif in parallel 6ths with dissonant bass chords 51:26 - Symbolism, meaning, controversy of certain themes (Imperials, Main Theme) showing up in later movies 1:02:21 - Making sense of the Enfys Nest themes. 1:12:40 - Bulgarian folk music deep dive, where it fits into a Western entertainment context 1:52:13 - Did any Solo themes show up in The Book of Boba Fett? The anime crew is down a member, as Rose is recuperating from a Healin' Beam. John and Elvie are still here to cover the well regarded Patlabor films, going over their political themes, animation, and kickass robots. Then, the crew is set free, as Gekidol, Wonder Egg, and a whole lot of other anime specters are exorcised from our collective minds. We do celebrate some of the good, like Yuru Camp, SK8, and Heaven's Design Team, but this season was pretty challenging, eh? Our opening is Mirai wa Lovers from the Patlabor Early Days OVA, and the ending is Theme of Patlabor 2 by Kenji Kawai.

A disclaimer: This episode won’t be for everyone. It’s been an odd few weeks, and for some reason I’ve been finding comfort in sad stuff rather than just trying to flood my brain with relentlessly happy things. As a result of this special mix of factors, the episode you’re getting from me is all about sad music — specifically sad music from 16-bit RPGs. While Singing Mountain is not yet back, when it returns it will be with a slightly different format that in this episode. I hope this is something we can both look forward to. Special thanks to Sampson, host of VGM101, who accepted my invitation to talk about sad non-RPG music, just for a little variety: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/vgm101/id1473369972 And while we’re at it, the most recent episode of his show actually has a little guest appearance by me: https://prolefeed101.com/vgm-101-episode-29-street-fighting-fighting-street/ Track listing: 0:15: At the Bottom of the Night / Chrono Trigger / Yasunori Mitsuda 3:01: Voice of Awakening / Energy Breaker / Yukio Nakajima, Yasunori Shiono and Yuusei Yamamoto 4:31: Sad Freedom / Treasure Hunter G / John Pee 8:35: Jojo (Yoyo) / Bahamut Lagoon / Noriko Matsueda 10:30: Reminiscence / Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together / Hitoshi Sakimoto 12:33: Legend / Seiken Densetsu 3 / Hiroki Kikuta 16:18: Game Over / Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei / Tsukasa Masuko and Hitoshi Sakimoto 18:29: Sigh and Tear / Sorcerian (Mega Drive) / Mieko Ishikawa 21:00: Dying World / Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom / Izuho Numata 21:53: Game Over / Dragon Slayer II: The Legend of Heroes / Mieko Ishikawa and Atsushi Shirakawa 24:12: Last Moments / Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal / Motoaki Takenouchi 27:22: Ruins / Surging Aura / Kamo 28:50: Barlizer / Princess Minerva / Hiroaki Iwatani 30:26: Makai / Shin Megami Tensei II / Tsukasa Masuko 32:35: Parting / Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals / Yasunori Shiono 34:39: Begging One’s Life / Brandish II: The Planet Buster / Falcom Sound Team J.D.K. 36:42: Silence / Chaos Seed / Yasunori Shiono, Katsuhiro Hayashi and Yukio Nakajima 39:44: Emeraude’s Theme / Magic Knight Rayearth (Super NES) / Unknown Composer 41:44: In the Darkness / Mystic Ark / Akihiko Mori 44:44: Dark Night / Crusader of Centy / Motokazu Shinoda 47:23: A Premonition =Styx= / Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (Genesis) 49:16: An Old Sad Dance / King Colossus / Kenichiro Isoda 52:40: Reminicenses / Traysia / Minoru Yuasa 53:50: Underground Ruined Town / Dragon Slayer II: The Legend of Heroes / Mieko Ishikawa and Atsushi Shirakawa 55:58: Misty Lake / Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand / Naoki Kaneda 58:54: Ruins / Blue Almanac / Noriyuki Iwadare and Masaru Suzuki 61:07: Ebon Keep / Secret of Evermore / Jeremy Soule 63:39: Offering to King Gort / Albert Odyssey / Naoki Kodaka 66:08: Intro / Devilish / Hitoshi Sakimoto 69:09: Aquatic Ambiance / Donkey Kong Country / David Wise 72:27: Niena’s Melody / Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand / Naoki Kaneda 74:09: Sad Song / Farland Story II / Masakata Kitaura, Atsuyoshi Isemura, Rikei Hirashima, Music Worx 77:36: Field / Sansara Naga 2 / Kenji Kawai 80:09: Farewell, My Friends / Bounty Sword / Kohei Tanaka and Akihiko Mori 82:52: Wind that Whips the World / Energy Breaker / Yukio Nakajima, Yasunori Shiono and Yuusei Yamamoto 86:42: Pathos / Elfaria / Shigeaki Saegusa 88:27: Aroma of Stew / Energy Breaker / Yukio Nakajima, Yasunori Shiono and Yuusei Yamamoto 91:15: Sacrifices / ActRaiser / Yuzo Koshiro 92:31: Phantom and a Rose / Secret of Mana / Hiroki Kikuta 94:52: Crime of the Heart / Treasure of the Rudras / Ryuji Sasai 98:01: My Home, Sweet Home / Final Fantasy V / Nobuo Uematsu Support Singing Mountain on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/singingmountain Drew on Twitter: https://twitter.com/drewgmackie

RADERE (CELE, Full Spectrum / Denver) Radere (@radere) is the alias of Carl Ritger – a guitarist and synthesist currently based in Denver, Colorado. His work primarily explores the shadowy gulf that exists between drone and noise, blurring traditional instrumentation, electronics, and location recordings into densely textured sonic monoliths. Radere’s recordings have found their way to light via a slew of independent labels, including Full Spectrum Records, Moodgadget Records, basic_sounds (RIP), and futuresequence. He also conducts ongoing collaborations with Sun Hammer, offthesky, Ten and Tracer, Cody Yantis, and Anduin; as well as John Templeton, alongside whom he comprises the experimental techno vehicle Coward. This mix is a recreation of a set he delivered at the New Romanticks launch party in Denver, Colorado on Labor Day. The city was bathed in the smoke of the burning American West. It choked the lungs and burned the eyes as oppressive heat rose from the dust. What was meant to be a fond farewell to summer 2k17 instead devolved into an endurance challenge of Herzogian proportions, befitting the funereal tenor of these selections. Existential hymns for a doomed desert caravan. Artwork by Chris Cole Stream / download all Deep Club Podcasts here: soundcloud.com/deepclubdenver/sets/deep-club-podcasts TRACKLIST: 01. In The Shell - Original Soundtrack (1995)
Cinema 7even discuss The Live Action version of the classic anime "Ghost In The shell" Starring Scarlett Johansson.

This week I welcome a guest mix from Yorkshire native, London located, Tokyo Spirited producer & DJ Kidkanevil. The mix is a departure away from the style of previous mixes in the series and rather then focusing on underground club sounds he has put together a mix looking at some of the music from his favourite anime soundtracks. As a big anime fan myself I am overjoyed to be able to share this mix and hopefully allow people an insight into the beauty that can be found in the scores to many of these incredible films. To start things off I have put together a couple of tracks that i feel embody the style and feel of anime movie soundtracks, and I could certainly see all of these tracks in the scores to some of my favourite anime films. It features music from Bwana, Kenji Kawai, Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Ahmed Malek & Flako, Congi, Paleman plus more. enjoy
