The Parables of Jesus in Modern Interpretation   Jesus of Nazareth, a seminal figure in Christian faith, is renowned not just as a spiritual guide and savior but also an unmatched storyteller. Using simple, everyday illustrations, he tackled complex theological and moral conundrums. His parables, varied and compelling tales, have engaged theologians, scholars, and ordinary people for centuries, revealing the multifaceted dimensions of spiritual truth. While their inherent messages endure over time, they possess a dynamic quality that allows for modern interpretation and application to contemporary issues.   Intriguingly, parables were a distinctive hallmark of Jesus's teaching method. Sublime in their simplicity yet profound in their implications, these stories brought forth a transformative approach to understanding spiritual and ethical principles. Remarkably, parables are more than mere allegories or metaphors. In essence, they engage the listener or reader on multiple levels, encouraging introspection, inquiry, and, sometimes, inviting controversy and debate.   The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) constitutes a prime example that remarkably corresponds to modern-day discourses on ethnicity, nationality, and racial harmony. It tells of a man, presumably a Jew, who was assaulted and left half-dead by the roadside. A priest and a Levite, despite being of the same ethnic group and religious lineage, pass by without assisting. It is a Samaritan, viewed with disdain and prejudice by Jews of the time, who stops to help the victim compassionately. This parable invites us, as contemporary readers, to challenge our prejudices and redefine our understanding of 'neighbor'. It underlines the mandate to show mercy across ethnic, national, and social boundaries, a message of utmost relevance in today's era of increasing social fragmentation.   Another compelling tale is the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), which beautifully encapsulates the concepts of sin, repentance, and divine forgiveness. In this narrative, a younger son squanders his inheritance prematurely, lives a debauched life, and ultimately lands in destitution. Recognizing his misstep, he returns home, prepared to accept the status of a servant. However, his father, filled with mercy, welcomes him warmly and even arranges a celebratory feast. This provokes resentment in the elder son, who had always been obedient. The father gently reminds the elder that all he has is his, while the rejoicing was due to the lost son's return. A modern interpretation could address issues like the tendency to judge others, the apportioning of blame, and the exploration of repentance, grace, and second chances. Moreover, it fosters the discussion on familial relationships and addresses the destructive nature of envy and pride, sentiments exacerbated in the modern world due to the 'highlight reel' culture of social media.   The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-23) provides a metaphor on disseminating 'the word of the kingdom' and the varied responses it garners. The sower sows seeds on different types of ground: the path, rocky places, thorns, and good soil – each representing a type of listener. Through this parable, we can reflect on how we receive the Word of God in an era overwhelmed with information and knowledge. Are we too distracted or hardened by the complexities and challenges of the modern world to genuinely engage with and act upon those heavenly insights?    Each parable unravels the spiritual truths of our human existence - they provide guidelines on how to navigate life's turbulences faithfully and morally. The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31-32) embodies the power of faith in bringing about change in our individual lives and society. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21-35) issues a profound reminder about forgiveness in an age where individuals often harbor resentment and grudges.   In conclusion, while the parables were birthed in a cultural and historical context vastly different from our own, they transcend these boundaries through their timeless wisdom. They act as mirrors, reflecting our societal norms, personal shortcomings, and spiritual struggles. The modern interpretations are countless, each offering renewed perspectives enlightening our understanding of faith, morality, benevolence, humility, perseverance, and love. Indeed, the Parables of Jesus continue to provide a crucial moral and spiritual compass guiding us through today's contemporary world immersed in constant evolution.

CURRENT SERMON SERIES: They accused Jesus of being a radical. His message was too subversive, his influence too dangerous, his ideas just too extreme. This radical must be stopped, they said, before he changes everything. They were right. Jesus really was a radical. But he wasn't a dangerous extremist. He was simply calling people back to the roots of their faith. The word radical comes from the Latin, radix, meaning roots. To be a radical isn't to wander off to the extreme edges, but to return to the roots or the source of one's beliefs. Jesus was a radical who believed that by returning to the source—to God—we could actually change the world. In this series, we'll explore some of Jesus' most radical parables that return us to our roots—back to the source—and offer us a blueprint for how to radically transform the world around us.

Sermon Passages and Notes: Faith Like a Mustard Seed Matthew 13:24-43 Summary of the Sermon on the Mount in Two Points: • Dependence on God. • God's people assume a different stance/posture towards one another. Matthew 13:24-43 Three Parables in this Passage: The Wheat & Weeds The Mustard Seed The Leaven Dependence on God. God's people assume a different stance/posture towards one another. 1 Corinthians 3:4-9 4 For whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not acting like mere humans? 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So, then, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's coworkers. You are God's field, God's building. "You are God's field..." What am I allowing to take root in my life? God's people assume a different stance/posture towards one another. Matthew 5:43-44 43 “You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Mathew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Matthew 7:1-4 1 “Do not judge, so that you won't be judged. 2 For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use. 3 Why do you look at the splinter in your brother's eye but don't notice the beam of wood in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,' and look, there's a beam of wood in your own eye? Matthew 7:12 12 Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. There are going to be weeds in life.

Do you ever wonder why God didn't launch his kingdom or the church with a little more...splash or an impressive debut? Trumpets, clouds parting, a single beam from heaven becoming an intense burst of light, a deafening chorus of angels...you get the point. Come to think of it, something like that took place in fields outside of Bethlehem, but the only audience was a group of shepherds. Jesus addresses the nature of God's kingdom today in two short parables, and he speaks to this very issue. If you are getting started in a relationship with God, trying to have a quiet time or seeking guidance at this point in your life, you're in the right place.Spend your first fifteen minutes of the day listening to God and responding in a personal way. This podcast will show you how and teach you in an easy to follow process. In fifteen minutes (or less) you will listen to God's word for you, reflect on it and learn to pray to God as well as carry that word with you through the rest of your day. What a perfect way to get started! The featured scripture in this episode is Matt 13:31-35. After the parable of the soils and the weeds, Jesus points to the paradox of how God chooses to start his kingdom. Not with fanfare, a lightshow, an awe-inspiring angel chorus, but in a tiny and obscure way that would be easy to miss. Mustard seed...and yeast. Tiny and unimpressive symbols that produce something unexpected compared to their humble beginnings. That's the way God works, and it humbles us with our big egos and vanity. Sure God could stage a more impressive debut, but then we would miss something important he is trying to teach us, something that will touch our hearts. Go ahead and get started listening and follow or subscribe to this podcast to hear more from God's word. “Seed” as a Theme in the Bible 1 Peter 1:23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God,which lives and abides for ever. Eve – her seed (Messiah) will bruise Satan’s heel (Gen. 3:15 ) Abraham – his seed will bless many nations (Genesis 12, 15)David – Messiah to be of his royal lineage (II Samuel 7, Isaiah 9) Jesus – as The Fulfillment, Gospel teachings Paul – theological – Romans 4, Galatians 3 (Abraham) Paul – practical – Galatians 5:22, Ephesians 5:9 (fruit of the Spirit) Two ‘seed’ time-scales: (i) affects all humanity (all dispensations),(ii) affects a human life. Encourages:Patience (one lifespan, future generations). Hope (fruit in a lifespan, of future generations; ‘take (God’s) long view’). Purpose (seed has levels of purpose). Asking basic questions: (i) where is the fruit? (ii) what is the fruit?Requires: Faith (required, planting is a starting point, believe that somethingwill happen, maybe …. a harvest!) Participation (our involvement; ‘planting’, ‘watering’). Three Parables of Jesus Christ about Seeds and Fruit The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13) - Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13) - 1The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. 2And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. The Parable of the Identifying Fruit (Matthew 7) - 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Let us: - Be Patient (with ourselves). - Have Hope (our lives can bear good fruit). - Purpose (fruitfulness is its own reward, but inestimable in eternal matters…..) - Ask (i) where is the fruit (“Normal Christian Life”)? (ii) what is the fruit? Let us also: -Have Faith (be a starting point, believe that one life can yield a harvest). - Participate in the work (sow the Word of God). -1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which lives and abides for ever.
