Despite the fact that 51% of the population will experience menopause, and the estimated 13 million people who are currently peri or menopausal in the UK, the topic of menopause has remained taboo. In 2022 I was delighted to speak to two advocates driving change in the national conversation around menopause on their experience of this transition, and what needs to change to ensure more women have access to the support they need – including those in the justice system. I spoke with Davina McCall, renowned TV presenter and household name who has presented documentaries about the menopause and is author of Menopausing, The Positive Roadmap to Your Second Spring which seeks to debunk myths, and break the shameful silence over the menopause. I was also joined by Carolyn Harris, MP for Swansea East who established the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on menopause and has played a pivotal role in putting menopause on the national agenda. Today, instead of taking our regular trip down to the cellar, Kate welcomes Lynn and Terry, two White Wine Question Time listeners who bravely share how our menopause series has transformed their relationship in such a difficult life stage. In this candid chat, they reflect on the challenges menopause can bring to our closest relationships, and how, with a little support and allyship, they found a way through. But that's not all – Kate also catches up with her (and Lynn's!) personal trainer, Richie, to get expert advice on how exercise during menopause and perimenopause can reduce stress and boost your mood in a time you need it most. You can find the rest of our menopause series here: The Menopause - and what's next with Tamzin Outhwaite and Dr. Lydia Robertson, Bridging the age gap on Menopause Awareness and World Menopause Day with Lisa Snowdon & Dr. Naomi Potter. If, like Lynn and Terry, our episodes have made a difference to your menopause journey, we'd love to hear your story - drop us a message on Instagram here! Pre Order my book: You Are Not Broken: Stop "Should-ing" All Over Your Sex Life Dr. Kelly Casperson and Dr. Naomi Potter discuss menopause myths and misconceptions, focusing on topics such as vaginal estrogen, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and testosterone. They highlight the importance of educating women about the safety and benefits of these treatments, as well as the need for women to advocate for themselves in healthcare. They also address the cultural stigma around menopause and the natural aging process, emphasizing the role of hormones in maintaining women's health and quality of life. Takeaways Vaginal estrogen is safe and has advantages, including reducing urinary tract infections. HRT is beneficial for women's health, including reducing the risk of heart disease and dementia. Women need to advocate for themselves and seek multiple opinions when it comes to hormone therapy. There is a cultural stigma around menopause and the use of hormones, which limits women's access to beneficial treatments. The healthcare system needs to catch up with the evidence and provide better education and options for women. https://www.instagram.com/dr_naomipotter Thanks to our sponsor Solv Wellness! Launching into this brand new series Natalie is joined by menopause specialist & founder of Menopause Care, Dr Naomi Potter to talk understanding perimenopause and the myths surrounding HRT. A highly experienced menopause doctor combining care with compassion, Naomi is accredited by the British Menopause Society and is one-half of the hugely successful, number one bestselling book Menopausing alongside TV presenter Davina McCall. During this episode Naomi breaks down the early signs and symptoms of perimenopause and explains how many women still don't realise they are potentially experiencing it due to a lack of education in this area of women's health. She also notes how the stigma around menopause and perimenopause leads younger women to believe that it is too early for them to be experiencing symptoms and so end up either being misdiagnosed or suffering alone. Naomi also voices her frustration as she discusses the narrative that perimenopause is a myth and that the prescribing of HRT to women in their early 40's should be normalised. Listen in for an eye opening conversation around this often misunderstood area of women's health.
Natalie invites you to join us for our series launch episode on Sun 9th April with Dr Naomi Potter! Make sure you hit subscribe to never miss an episode and get involved with our brand new conversations..
Davina McCall has been an energetic and enthusiatic presence on our TV screens for decades. As a teenager I loved watching her dating show Streetmate, and God's Gift which I adored. Then I was glued to the screen as she fronted Big Brother for 11 series between 2000 and 2010, and more recently she's presented ITV's emotional series Long Lost Family and of course the pure fun show The Masked Singer, which I did a couple of years ago and it is back again this month. Davina and I spoke in November when I was just back from Australia so I might have been a *little* woolly but hopefully not too bad. We talked about her difficult start in life when her mum left home, but she expalined how she had two wonderful female role models in her life - her grandmother, Pippy, and her stepmum, Gabby. She told me about the joy of having three older children, two of whom have left home, but explained you still have to be available at the drop of a hat, when they need you - something I found strangely comforting. We also spoke about her personal passion project - educating people about the menopause, which has seen her present two documentaries, and, along with Dr Naomi Potter, write a book called Menopausing, which has certainly helped take away any ignorance and fear I have about the subject. Finally we plotted to do something outrageous together one of these days... just to shock you, and our children! So, watch this space.Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Here we are here we are finishing out our roundup with the end of our “spot check” in Calgary Alberta, Canada, and we close out with the Western Canadian performance art legend Rita McKeough. Rita McKeough is an installation and performance artist whose practice is based in Calgary. Her work incorporates audio, electronics and mechanical performing objects. Since the late 70s, McKeough has been committed to creating thoughtful and fully immersive spaces that push and unbalance our underlying assumptions which we use to navigate our everyday lives. She uses interactive technologies to represent natural interdependencies and to create weave together her musical and artistic practices. McKeough work' are formerly rooted in a long established feminist perspective, and she brings that lense to content that deals with the environmental impacts of land development and industrial extraction. Her's is the voice of agency and articulates the forces of resistance mobilized by the natural world. In this week's episode Edwina explores the often unspoken impact of menopause on women's lives. Despite the fact that 51% of the population will experience menopause, and the estimated 13 million people who are currently peri or menopausal in the UK, this topic has remained taboo. Edwina speaks to two advocates driving change in the national conversation around menopause on their experience of this transition, and what needs to change to ensure more women have access to the support they need – including those in the justice system. Edwina's first guest is Davina McCall, renowned TV presenter and household name. As well as presenting shows such as Big Brother and The Million Pound Drop, Davina has presented documentaries exploring the Menopause. She is also the author of Menopausing, The Positive Roadmap to Your Second Spring which seeks to debunk myths, and breaks the shameful silence over the menopause. Edwina's second guest is Carolyn Harris, MP for Swansea East who established and now chairs the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on menopause. Carolyn has played a pivotal role in putting menopause on the national agenda, and has recently published an inquiry into the impacts of Menopause on women and families as part of her work for the APPG on menopause. In part 2 of ‘Let's Talk About Menopause' we chat to incredible women from the Menopause Mandate - Alice Smellie, Laura Biggs, Lisa Snowden and Lavina Mehta MBE.However it affects you (whether you are the menopausal woman or the partner or child of one!), we can probably all agree that choice, affordability of & access to HRT plus education can make it better and more positive. We are not advocating any one approach but absolutely support raising awareness and breaking down the taboos. The Menopause Mandate is a group of women from all walks of life who share a common interest in peri menopause and menopause. Real women, campaigners, politicians, menopause experts, celebrities and journalists devoted to creating a coalition of campaigners to achieve everyone's ultimate goal of revolutionising the support and advice women receive from both the health service in the UK and wider society. Celebrities (including Mariella Fostrup, Davina McCall, Gabby Logan, Cherry Healy, Penny Lancaster, Carol Vorderman and Michelle Griffith Robinson) and experts like Dr Naomi Potter, Dr Juliet Balfour involved with Menopause Mandate have helped drive the narrative in the UK, raising awareness and fighting for change in government policy, workplace provisions, education and demystifying the scaremongering of HRT. The “Davina Effect” following Davina McCall's pioneering documentary “Sex, Myths and the Menopause” was broadcast in May 2021, shining a spotlight on the realities for women going through the menopause. In this episode we continue chatting with Mandate founders & directors health journalist/author (Cracking the Menopause with Mariella Fostrup) Alice Smellie, and CEO of Intuitive Events, Laura Biggs. Along with Carolyn Harris MP & Mariella Fostrup (MM Chair - broadcaster, presenter, author and documentarian including BBC1's The Truth About Menopause), they set up the Menopause Mandate in 2021. We're also joined by television/radio presenter and MM patron Lisa Snowden who has openly and honestly shared her personal menopause journey on social media, through women's groups and her Get Lifted podcast helping thousands of women feel less alone. You may well have seen Lisa on ITV's This Morning with her fashion advice or on the latest series of Celebrity Masterchef where she was crowned winner! She's also pretty nifty on the dance floor, making to the final of Strictly Come Dancing a few years ago. Finally, covid exercise hero and MM patron, Lavina Mehta (awarded an MBE for her services in Health & Fitness during the pandemic), chats about her peri-menopause experience and how important exercise and nutrition is for women during peri- and menopause. Lavina's mission is to break down some of the taboos surrounding women's health in her South Asian community.During lockdown Lavina provided free twice daily virtual workouts to help keep all ages healthy & mentally positive from home. Along with her 74 year old mother-in-law she continues to offer free Seniors Workouts in Gujarati and English through her Feel Good with Lavina platform. We are big supporters of the work of the Menopause Mandate who, along with other incredible doctors, influencers, experts, podcasters and journalists, continue to support and fight for women in this chapter of their life whether that's in the workplace, at home or in the medicine cabinet. Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett explore the interspace between seemingly polarized entities: light + dark, nature + culture, DIY + institutional, individual + collective. Based in Calgary/Mohkinstsis, the duo centres their practice in relational space, conceptualizing installations and interventions primarily for the public realm. Their projects beckon viewers with novel materials and participatory contexts, inviting strangers to share in collaborative viewership. Beautiful, subversive, playful, and radically inclusive, their works transform the everyday through a critical shift in perspective. We talk through hibernation, place as space, the magic of light, a physical glitch art (the show image is an image of the work "Carbon Copy", 2022)and the magic that could be in post-social practice "New Genra Public Art." Oh, and Duncan tries to defend the Stampede. https://incandescentcloud.com/ This is part of a series of conversations curated by Naomi Potter and the Esker Foundation in service of evolving a portrait of the future of Calgary's contemporary art world. It is an idea about investigating places though conversations with artists. As though, through a series of conversations with sensitive and emblematic makers we could come to a greater understanding of a context, not just artistic practices.
In this episode Duncan reaches out to Naomi Potter and the Esker Foundation to curate a series of conversations, in the hopes of evolving a portrait of the future of Calgary's contemporary art world. It is an idea about investigating places though conversations with artists. As though, through a series of conversations with sensitive and emblematic makers we could come to a greater understanding of a context, not just artistic practices. It is kind of an experiment. The Esker Foundation is Calgary's and one of Canada's premier contemporary art venues, and an incredibly unique Canadian investigation into alternative arts funding and philanthropic artistic support thanks to arts patron, Jim Hill. We did a show about it. Here is a link... https://badatsports.com/2019/episode-695-naomi-potter-and-the-esker-foundation/
