Have you ever felt the raw power of nature while holding a fishing rod, battling the winds of Patagonia? Our latest episode takes you on a whirlwind tour with Marin Saide, a fly fishing guide whose life is woven with the rivers and fish of this untamed landscape. From the lush northern territories to the ice-cold southern extremes, Marin's journey of becoming a masterful guide is as much about personal transformation as it is about the thrill of the catch. We traverse the spectrum of fly fishing experiences, understanding the balance between angler and environment, and the camaraderie that's fostered on these remote waters.Patagonia's rich fishing tapestry is tinged with historical intrigue and modern-day challenges. Listen as we unravel the fascinating introduction of non-native fish species and their impact on local ecosystems, and how they have reshaped fishing practices. The guide's toolbox is crucial in these parts – think Patagonia waders and loop rods to combat illegal fishing practices, and the art of selecting the perfect fly from intruders to Scandinavian types. Marin shares tales of DIY adventures and spey fishing mastery in the relentless Patagonian winds, painting a vivid picture of the life aquatic. But fly fishing is more than just a sport – it's a communion with nature and a testament to the human spirit. This episode is a reflective journey through the eyes of a guide who has seen the solitude of nature magnified by the pandemic. As we discuss the aspirations and hurdles of guiding across continents, from Chile's vibrant culture to the bureaucratic mazes for an international guide in Canada, one thing remains clear: the transformative power of fly fishing reaches far beyond the rivers it graces. Kim Chakanetsa hears about the awe-inspiring journeys of two white-water kayakers from the US and France, and the resilience that's kept them at the top of their discipline. Nouria Newman is the first and only woman to run a 30-metre waterfall, a feat captured in the film Wild Waters which charts some of her most audacious expeditions. After a career on the canoe slalom competition circuit, she left that behind to explore her love of the great outdoors, a passion which has taken her to some of the world's most remote and challenging rivers. Having heard many times what small, slight women like her weren't expected to do, Darcy Gaechter set out to prove them wrong. Her memoir, Amazon Woman, describes the 4,300-mile long perilous journey she undertook in 2013 from one of the sources of the Amazon to where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Transcript included below…Today we're going to talk about how to serve and play our best, regardless of what our audience does.I've led a lot of worship and played a lot of concerts over the past three decades. And I've got stories that could make you laugh, drop your jaw, or shake your head.Perhaps today's thoughts will lead you to do any or all of those things. But really, my hope is that you'll allow yourself the freedom to reflect on the types of audiences you play for, or hope to play for, and then to ultimately open your hands for how the Lord might use you.Worshiping on the InsideI led a morning of worship for a men's breakfast one time at an area church in Seattle. I had been entrusted with the privilege of providing the music component alongside a speaker. My song choices, were, I thought, pretty well-known, because this was not a community I served weekly. This was a one-time endeavor, so I was relying on the renown of my song choices to facilitate an environment where these men would sing out.And sing out they did – all but one of them. As I led the singing, I saw one man near the front with his arms folded and his mouth closed. The expression on his face was clearly a frown. And it stayed that way the whole time.“What could I do to make this guy sing, or at least smile?” I wondered. Well, I tried to bring levity and joy to my verbal remarks, I led the singing with a smile on my face, and at a certain point, I even looked right at him and met his eye for an extended moment.Still, no smile. It didn't occur to me that this guy might be worshiping on the inside, because he just looked so unhappy and miserable on the outside.I began to silently say to myself, “If he loves Jesus, why doesn't he notify his face?” and “If he's so unhappy, why doesn't he just leave?”But those weren't productive things to focus on, so I just led the singing and I did the best I could to steward the opportunity that had been entrusted to me.After the event was over, this very same man – the one who looked so unhappy – came right up to me and told me he wanted to talk to me.“Uh oh,” I thought. “Here it comes – a list of things I did wrong.”But to my utter delight and surprise, this man said (and I wish you could see my face as I try to duplicate his remarks), “Young man, you really blessed me today. You presented such a sincere, quality offering, and your delight in the Lord was very evident. I am so grateful for your Christ-honoring ministry.”His face was unchanging, still bearing the deep frown from earlier. The words were encouraging, even in spite of the visual display of what looked like disappointment or even bitterness.I didn't have the heart to tell this guy that his face looked the opposite of what he was saying. I just thanked him for his words of affirmation, gave the glory to the Lord, and tried to focus mainly on what he said, not how he looked as he said it.Well, obviously, I've held onto how he looked, because I'm still talking about it to this day. But what did that experience teach me?It taught me that I shouldn't judge someone merely on their appearance. Was he interested and appreciative, even though he didn't look like he was? Yes. Should his lack of positive body language have affected me as much as it did? Perhaps not. It's been several years since this experience, so perhaps if I saw someone looking like him in a current worship environment, I might not take them as seriously. This experience also taught me that although I can present an invitation to sing to the Lord, not everyone is going to take me up on it. And that's ok.Lastly, it taught me that perhaps my focus should not be on the people I'm leading in worship – at least not most of my focus. It has happened in the past that a handful of people in the worship congregation have looked less than enthusiastic as I've been working so hard to lead them well. And this guy looked genuinely annoyed. Perhaps that's just how he always looks. But my main take-away from that experience was that ultimately it wasn't about me. Who was it about? The Lord, right?Stuck on Top of a WaterfallSeveral years ago, I submitted one of my recordings for a “Battle of the Bands” competition, and I got in. Living on the western side of the state of Washington, I knew that if I made it to the final round, I'd be traveling over to north Idaho. And that's just what ended up happening.I grew up on the east side of the state, and the venue for the final round of this Battle of the Bands was actually a water park I went to as a kid. So, I got in the car with my mom, who has always appreciated my music, and who graciously agreed to support me in this endeavor. Together, we made our way across the state of Washington to Wild Waters in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. When I checked in for the competition, it became clear that I had come as a solo performer. The rest of the contestants (and there were three others) had full bands. “Wow, you're really talented,” one of the other band members said to me at the check-in desk. His voice was definitely sarcastic, as if to say, “Good luck competing with our full bands while you just play your solo acoustic guitar.”I tried not to give it too much thought, because my focus was to share my music and bring my best.Interestingly enough, they had retrofitted the water park with a huge stage that was literally on top of a waterfall. The edge of the stage was lined with a couple dozen huge speakers that made the platform into a rectangular “turret,” and the performers presented their songs from behind the speakers, so that everyone in the water park could hear them.As I looked at the stage from below, it became clear to me why they had lined it with all those huge speakers. The water rushing from below the stage, forming the huge waterfall, was really loud. They needed some serious sound reinforcement to overcome the sound of the waterfall. As I stepped out onto the stage, I looked across the large pond I was above, and saw a crowd of a few hundred people on the lawn, ready to listen to each of the contestants. I tried my best to be winsome and to incorporate my signature humorous remarks, stories, and anecdotes between the songs I shared…but everything I said seemed to fall flat. I couldn't hear any laughter or vocal response from the audience. I played well, but I felt very lonely up there, because the relationship with the audience seemed like a one-way street with no audible response from the crowd.I stepped down from the stage, and went to sit with my mother, who had experienced my performance.“That was incredible,” she said. “You played so well, and the crowd loved it.”“Really?” I said, with surprise in my voice. “It sure didn't seem like it.”After talking with her for a few minutes, I realized that the people in the audience had had a very different experience from the performers. The audience could hear everything that was shared from the stage. But because there was so much sound near the stage from the waterfall, the performers couldn't hear the audience. So, I didn't know that they were responding enthusiastically to my words and music. My mom shared with me that the audience actually roared with laughter at my humor. But I couldn't hear them over the roar of the waterfall. And although I had good enough stage presence to press on, this really tested me. Several times after hearing no laughter when I shared things that people had laughed heartily at during past concerts, I felt tempted to say, “Wow…tough crowd,” but fortunately, I didn't say anything. I just kept singing and playing, as if the audience was enjoying what I was sharing.I played a great set, and I even surprised myself by winning the contest. When I spoke with one of the judges afterwards, she shared with me that all the performers had been evaluated on multiple aspects, including: musical presentation, lyrical depth, and of course, performance.Interestingly, the fellow band member who had been a little snarky with me before the contest didn't have anything to say to me after my victory had been announced. And as a result of winning, I was awarded a prime slot on the Grandstand stage at the upcoming Spokane Interstate Fair…and this time, I brought a drummer and bass player with me. My takeaway from this? I need to be sure not to let the sound of the audience (or lack thereof) affect what I'm doing as I offer my gifts. The Lord was the true audience at this event, and as long as I was leaning into my giftings and playing for Him, my focus was in the right place. There have been performances before and since that event, where I've had a very reserved or quiet audience that barely clapped, in contrast to audiences who have whooped, whistled and cheered. When the audience gets quiet, what can we do? Focus on the Lord. That will allow us to enjoy what we're doing, and ultimately, to allow the audience to do the same. This Side of the Video CameraSomething made it inevitable. At a certain point in my ministry, I was going to be on camera. This would take the form of YouTube, Facebook Live, a digital streaming concert, and eventually Instagram. What do all of these platforms have in common? I'm playing to, and speaking to a camera that literally has a one-way signal. I'm sharing my heart, my gifts, my songs, through the lens of a video camera or smartphone that really only delivers feedback in these various platforms after the fact. It may come back in the form of likes, shares, views, or comments. And there may be many of each of those. Or there may only be a few.Responses from the more vocal people can give me a sense of how I'm connecting with the digital audience. In the case of a digital streaming concert, of which I've filmed two, I've been compensated – by donation – by those who want to watch the show. These folks have contributed financially to my ministry based on what they were able to give, and how they felt led to donate. That is a form of affirmation. Some videos out there (not mine yet) have gone viral, which can generate a lot of publicity or interest for the performing artist. But is a viral video the only metric of success? I would say “no.” Think about some of the viral videos that are out there on some of these platforms, and how some of them lack substance or meaning of an eternal significance. And yet, they go viral because they're eye-catching or amusing. That's fine – the artists who go viral have my respect, because many of them are working hard, and they're cluing into the algorithm and what allows their content to reach more people. But I've also met some world class musicians with whom I've collaborated, who either have no social media presence, or they're choosing to focus their efforts elsewhere. Does the fact that they are not dominating these social media platforms mean that they are somehow less effective with their gifts? I would again say, “no.”In God's economy, of which I know only a little, there are things that may seem insignificant to the world, but which are very important to God. And someone who is quietly and faithfully obeying and following the Lord with their gifts may not be held in high regard by the world. But God see them and will reward their faithful obedience. On the flipside, someone who is adored by the world, garnering household name recognition and performing in sold-out arenas, may or may not be doing work that is pleasing to God.So, when I'm on this side of the video camera, and I have very little sense of what the audience is thinking or doing, I have to check my motives, and open my hands to what the Lord might do through, and in spite of, the digital venue in which I am sharing my music. With only one or two likes or comments, or worse, some “dislikes” or negative comments, I can be tempted to think that what I'm doing is of little significance. But to whom is it insignificant? Is there more to the story? At the end of time, will I be found faithful for having sung and played from my heart, to the best of my ability, for the Lord of Creation…and will He smile at what I've done? That is my hope. I do want to gain traction and momentum, to play on real and virtual stages with the music He has entrusted to me, but I also want to please my Lord more than my audience. Can that be done? I would say, with prayer and faithfulness, “Yes.”Well, here at Guitar Serious Fun, we enjoyed another story time designed to shed light on the idea that the people who experience our music could be a tough crowd…or an appreciative audience. The first story had to do with how the audience member looked. That man at the prayer breakfast did not look happy as I led worship…but he was actually very deeply blessed by what I shared. The second story had to do with how the audience sounded. It seemed that the crowd below the waterfall in the Battle of the Bands contest was rather indifferent to what I was offering…but they were actually roaring with laughter and applauding enthusiastically. And the third story had to do with how I wasn't even able to see or hear the audience. Performing into a video camera can feel exhausting, because there's no immediate feedback. But after doing this for a while, I try to picture an audience on the other side of the lens, taking in what I share, and appreciating it.Ultimately, though, it's the Lord who is the Audience of One. You've heard that expression before, right? It's a true test, though, to play for an Audience of One, because our flesh longs for an audience of many, and we often find ourselves craving appreciation and words of affirmation. We can also feel discouraged by words of criticism. The Lord does want us to sing a new song, to play skillfully and to shout for joy (Psalm 33:3) – His love for us is not conditional based on our musical execution…but we are called to play well. So, let's do that. Let's play well, let's learn all we can with the time and resources we have available, and let's steward our gifts faithfully for the Audience of One. When the tough crowds come – and they will – let's always remind ourselves that our Heavenly Father is indeed an appreciative Audience of One who knows our hearts better than anyone. And if you're looking for ways to learn and develop your gifts, please check out GuitarSuccess4U.com. Susanne in her own words: “I think we have become dangerously complacent about referring to how we are disconnected from nature. Actually, we are inescapably connected to nature. For every single breath we rely on plants doing the photosynthetic work that also yields oxygen for us to breath, and half of that work is done by ocean dwelling microscopic plants. When you start looking into agricultural products you see how dependent these outputs are on rain cycles and aquifers. Marine bioprospecting is a frontier of hope in finding non-addictive treatments for chronic pain and novel chemicals for treating cancer. The deeper you dive the more connections you find between people and wild species. Perhaps I am more aware of the reliance we have on wild species because of my research on wildlife trade at Naturalis Biodiversity Center. Seeing the work of my academic peers who also look at supply chains feeding markets for products derived from wild species shows that wildlife trade spans both the earth and the phylogenetic tree of life far beyond the niche of wildlife trade that I work on (edible orchids). The problem is we are connected to nature, but we loose sight of that connection. This is coupled with barriers in being able to commune with nature including public wildlife areas being difficult to reach by public transport, terrain presenting physical challenges, and social challenges to people being allowed to feel comfortable, safe, and welcome in outdoor spaces. Biodiversity and ecological illiteracy are additional limitations. So when I write about people outdoors or wildlife it feels more like introducing the reader to an entity—a landscape or a species— that they might consume in products they buy or forage, and that they might see when they are out and about. I love being out in wilderness. But I am particularly interested in nature that is easier to find—wild species hidden in products that appear on supermarket shelves, wildlife that inhabits cities, creeps along canal paths, or inhabits shorelines where you can find it without needing a boat or dive gear.” New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out. Fishing the Wild Waters is the new book from today's guest Conor Sullivan. He was one of our earliest podcast guests here on WildFed, and at that time he'd mentioned he was writing this book, but it was still an early manuscript. Well, the book is out, and we've had the pleasure of reading it. This book is certainly a proud addition to our fishing library, a genre that we haven't always found very useful. But Conor's book is different. It's part memoir, with really inspiring and informative fishing stories from some of the United States' more remote fisheries. It's also part instructional manual, with several appendices that give detailed descriptions of fishing gear and angling strategies for specific species he writes about. In particular, we really appreciated the appendix called “how to fish like a local” which gives great tips on how to get started in a new fishery. Conor's career in the Coast Guard has taken him all over the wild waters of this incredible country, and he's really taken advantage of that opportunity, honing his angling skills wherever duty has taken him. He's here today to share with us a bit about how we too can become better, more effective anglers ourselves. And to encourage us to ply the wild waters wherever we live. Because there's adventure, fulfillment, and food out there, just waiting for you! View full show notes, including links to resources from this episode here: https://www.wild-fed.com/podcast/127
