This episode of 'Mind the Kids: Lessons from the ABCD data revolution' unpacks why “how we measure puberty” really matters for understanding adolescent mental health and development. Professor Adriene Beltz talks to Mark Tebbs about the huge US Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, which is following nearly 12,000 young people over 10 years with regular brain scans and surveys, giving an unprecedented window into how early experiences shape later outcomes. While investigating multisite pain and sex differences, her team stumbled on a problem: researchers using ABCD data were often relying on a convenient categorical puberty score (pre‑, early, mid‑, late, post‑puberty) that drops information and heavily weights the onset of menstruation, rather than using a richer continuous score based on all five pubertal development items. Their analyses show the continuous score is generally more reliable, better aligned with existing puberty research, and less distorted by big “jumps” around menarche, especially for girls. The conversation becomes a wider call to action: if puberty timing and tempo can shape lifelong trajectories in mental health, pain, and social experiences, then getting the measurement wrong risks misleading conclusions and missed opportunities for prevention. Adriene urges researchers to be thoughtful and transparent about how they score puberty in large datasets, to report clearly what they used, and to remember that puberty is a normative but highly sensitive transition where context, culture, and support all matter just as much as hormones. Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. In this week's Episode, Emily features Adriene Busch, a Bay Area fiber artist and weaver whose exhibition "Of Water" is currently on display at M Stark Gallery in Half Moon Bay. They chat at Adriene's home studio and discuss her artistic journey and creative process.Adriene grew up in Arizona making art but studied business in college, considering art impractical as a career. She continued creating throughout her education, exploring photography, ceramics, and painting. About 10 years ago, she discovered fiber arts through embroidery, which led her to weaving—a medium that combines everything she loved: the composition skills from photography, the tactile nature of ceramics, and the color mixing from painting. Her breakthrough came with "West Bay: A Love Letter," a large-scale aerial view of the Bay Area made with felted wool details like San Francisco skyscrapers. This piece was displayed at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Center for a year and caught the attention of gallerist Marianna Stark, who offered her the current exhibition.About Artist Adriene Busch:Adriene Busch is a contemporary weaver based in San Mateo, California. She has worked in various modes of fiber art since 2016, eventually committing fully to tapestry weaving. As a self-taught weaver, she finds great joy and satisfaction from artistic problem solving and in the continual development of her technical skills and artistic vision. She is intentional in her selection of materials, using color and texture to represent particular characteristics of her surroundings. As a tapestry weaver, she enjoys the many choices that working with fiber allows; in her pieces, color, texture, and composition interplay to create a balance between bold and neutral, flat and three-dimensional. Adriene's work reflects her personal connection to the world around her, creating pieces that embody her daily experiences.Visit Adriene's Website: WestBayFiber.comFollow Adriene on Instagram: @WestBayFiberFor more on Adriene's exhibition "Of Water" at the M Stark Gallery - CLICK HERE--About Podcast Host Emily Wilson:Emily a writer in San Francisco, with work in outlets including Hyperallergic, Artforum, 48 Hills, the Daily Beast, California Magazine, Latino USA, and Women's Media Center. #205 - Some stories don't just move you—they recalibrate your sense of what's possible. Adriene Caldwell grew up in the crosshairs of untreated schizophrenia, constant relocation, and a home life that spun from denial to violence. After losing the grandmother who shielded her, she entered a foster system that should have offered stability and instead delivered degradation: separate dishes, floor seating, and rules designed to remind her she didn't belong. The stats she shares are brutal—one in five inmates are former foster youth, seven in ten foster girls have a child by 21, and fewer than three percent use free college benefits—but the real shock is how incentives often reward keeping kids “high need” rather than helping them heal. What changed her trajectory was a lifeline she claimed for herself: a coveted congressional exchange to Germany. There, a host family modeled warmth, boundaries, and trust. Adriene learned German the hard way—by speaking it every day—aced tough classes at a college-track school, and felt the shift that happens when someone insists you sit in the front seat for the view. Returning stateside just shy of 18, she found no plan waiting and wrote letters up the chain until one emerged. Along the way, a third-grade math teacher delivered hotel toiletries to a housing project, and a fierce English teacher stocked her classroom with computers and left one to Adriene before she died. Those acts—practical, personal, and precisely timed—became stepping stones to scholarships and a future she couldn't yet picture. We also explore why Adriene wrote Unbroken, Life Outside the Lines, and how revisiting old case files forced a reckoning with both the parts of survival that became manipulation and the parts that deserve pride. Her message to teens at the edge is simple and urgent: your life won't always look like this, and soon your choices will shape what comes next—numbing or healing, hiding or asking, repeating or rebuilding. If this conversation resonates, share it with someone who needs proof that change is possible. Adriene Caldwell has done more than survive—she has thrived. A former foster youth who beat the odds, Adriene is part of the less than 3% who go on to attend college, despite statistics showing that 20% of the U.S. prison population once passed through the foster care system. She doesn't sugarcoat life's harsh realities, but instead offers something far more powerful: hope. Hope that trauma will end, that the future can be different, and that life, even after the worst experiences, can improve.Adriene's story is not an easy one, best captured by the trigger warnings that accompany her book: emotional and physical abuse, sexual assault of a child, the drowning death of a child, extreme poverty, mental illness, homelessness, foster care, pedophilia, graphic sexual descriptions, violence, bulimia, incest, death, and suicide. It is a story of pain, resilience, and ultimately, the possibility of a better life. In this episode, Ross lays down the law on modern content distribution and why "hoping it goes viral" isn't a strategy. He breaks down the five most common mistakes marketers make with distribution, highlights the new reality of reaching audiences in the AI and multi-channel era, and walks you step-by-step through building a powerful, repeatable distribution system that delivers results. If you've been creating high-quality content but struggling to get it in front of the right audience, this episode gives you the system, mindset, and framework to turn things around. Key Takeaways and Insights: Hope Is NOT a Strategy Pressing “publish” is not enough to drive content success. Distribution is what transforms good content into great, high-impact content. If no one sees your content, it may as well not exist. 5 Common Distribution Mistakes Publish Once, Then Disappear Celebrate distribution, not just publishing. Implement a content distribution calendar to continuously share and promote assets. Relying on a Single Channel Multi-channel presence is essential to stay top of mind and generate multiple touch points. Don't stick to just LinkedIn or X — explore YouTube, Reddit, newsletters, Slack groups, and more. Assuming Organic Reach is Guaranteed Social and SEO algorithms don't owe you visibility. Use rented platforms to build owned ones (e.g., newsletters), and pair organic with smart paid amplification. Not Repurposing Content A blog post should become a LinkedIn carousel, a video, a thread on X, a newsletter, etc. Embrace the mantra: Create Once, Distribute Forever. Failure to Track Performance You can't optimize what you don't measure. Use tools like GA4, HubSpot, Ahrefs, etc., to analyze what's working. How to Build a Real Distribution System Audience & Content Market Fit Research Understand who your audience is, their interests, pain points, and where they hang out online. Go beyond business competitors — study top-performing content in other niches (MrBeast, Yoga with Adriene, etc.) to understand attention mechanics. Create a High-Value Pillar Asset Choose a format (blog post, video, case study, podcast, etc.). This asset will form the nucleus of your distribution efforts. Repurpose & Atomize Break your pillar asset into quotes, clips, carousels, threads, email snippets, and more for long-term promotion. Define Distribution Across PESO Paid (ads, boosts) Earned (press, influencer shares) Shared (social, communities) Owned (newsletter, blog) Measure Everything & Iterate Use data to guide future efforts and content decisions. Recommended tools: Google Analytics 4, HubSpot, Ahrefs, SparkToro, UTM dashboards, and Distribution.AI. Resources & Tools:

Adriene Caldwell has done more than survived; she has thrived. Less than 3% of former foster youth attend college. 20% of the US prison population was in foster care at one point. She's not spouting rainbows and sunshine; life can and very often is cruel. The whole team at HTBD has been working, at this point for years, on a new season about Odes[s]a, Ukraine. While we're impatient to put out everything we've been preparing, we decided to take our time and frame what you will be hearing this season. A prologue if you will. For the next few weeks, we'll be releasing these short casual clips that explain our approach (and how it changed) this season. Because of the nature of audio, it's easy to think that the person in front of the microphone is going it alone. But HTBD is a pretty large lift made all the easier by Adriene, who has been the show's sound designer since season 3 and is now the executive producer too. Adriene and Jess have worked together on projects for years but we rarely get to hear from her. So before we kick off this season, here is Adriene talking more about the sonic “identity” of HTBD.
Everyone deserves a snow day! Rest renews our energy and revives our hunger to tackle the world again. Banana Bread 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) 2 cups sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 cups all-purpose flour 6 very ripe bananas nuts or semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional) Cream the butter, sugar, and eggs. Sift together the salt, baking soda, and flour. In a separate bowl, mash the 6 ripe bananas. If bananas aren't ripe enough, the bread will be very dry. Add bananas to the creamed mixture and stir thoroughly. Mix in the flour and any chopped nuts or chocolate chips. Pour the mixture into 2 well-greased bread pans and bake in a 350° oven for 1 hour. Makes 2 loaves. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://www.jenhayes.me//10-things-shouldnt-buy-youre-broke/ Quotes to ponder: "It amazes me that so many people who are broke treat themselves to Starbucks every day. You could make your coffee or tea at home for a fraction of the price." "If you're broke, you shouldn't be throwing away money at the salon. If those things are truly important to you, you can spend money on those items after you pay off your debt and/or become more financially secure."
