Hoe was dat nu weer kunnen gebeuren?!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For this episode of The Unusual Histories podcast, Danny is joined by Ninia Benjamin, a tour de force who is known for 3 Non-Blondes, Big Fat Gypsy Gangster and Twisted Tales. She is a comedian, plus size model, writer, painter and actress who describes herself as a mother to your soul. Ninia has also appeared on Celebrity MasterChef and Hole in the Wall. If you´ve got kids they will know her as the voice of the eagle and the mosquito in Tinga Tinga Tales. She was born and raised in London and has lived in several of the city´s boroughs, so she shares some fascinating insights into why and how these areas have changed. Ninia shares her experience of growing up as the child of immigrants from Dominica and how her identity evolved as she got older, her unique way of making people laugh and dealing with hecklers. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ninia is a London girl through and through. She was born in Paddington but was raised mainly in Tottenham/Harringay before moving to Walthamstow. In Ninia´s lifetime the area around the Harringay Ladder has gone from mainly Turkish to largely Greek and is now becoming a popular area for Eastern Europeans. As the people change, the way the buildings in the area are used has changed drastically. Tottenham has a bad reputation for crime, but, in Ninia´s experience it is not as bad as some other boroughs. Tottenham has always been a place for new immigrants, which means it has an eclectic mix of cultures, ethnicities and religions. If you want something from a specific country e.g. an ingredient, the chances are you will find it on Tottenham High Road. Unusually, some buildings have been turned into places of worship. Ninia has only experienced racism in London on one occasion. Each wave of immigrants changes the cockney accent. Ninia´s comedy influences includes Robin Williams and Roseanne Barr. Ninia saw comedy as a path into acting. Humour is subjective. There is a new backlash against female stand up comics. Not all female comedians rely on running men down to get a laugh. BEST MOMENTS “I am truly a Tottenham girl, and I know Harringay like the back of my hand.” “Tottenham has always been a mixing pot… you can buy anything on Tottenham High Road.” “I'm the old kind of half cockney, half not cockney.” “I saw you destroy this heckler, you were awesome.” “It tickles me to be absurd.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/ninia_benjamin HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Collette Dinnigan has a storied history as one of Australia's must successful fashion designers. Ever. But that's just one chapter of her creative life.  Her adventurous spirit and love of colour, fabric and proportion make total sense in the context of her childhood. In the mid 70s, her father built a yacht and set sail from Durbin, South Africa for the world with his young family. When they settled in New Zealand her creative mother got involved in textile design, Collette would get the remnants and patterns, piecing them together into garments.  Her list of accolades is long. Collette became the first Australian to mount a full-scale ready-to-wear collection in Paris in October 1995, and in 1996 was invited by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture to show on the prestigious Paris Fashion Week schedule. By the early 2000s, she was the darling of the international fashion scene. Dressing celebrities who didn't want to wear the old houses on the red carpet, but something more youthful and new. In 2013, she was ready for change. Never afraid to take a risk, she controversially closed the doors to her business, instead of selling. When you get to know her, you'll understand why.  Today, her focus on collaborations and interiors satisfies her creative drive. She's collaborated with luxury brands like Qantas, Audi and Dom Perignon, authored children's books, designed interiors for restaurants and hotels and created wallpapers and ceramics. She's even been on Celebrity MasterChef, a credit to her commitment to pushing herself outside her comfort zone. She's authored two coffee table books, the second, ‘Bellissima, An Australian—Italian Affair', designed by Vince is on shelves in all good bookstores today.  Listen in as Vince and Collette discuss her love of interiors, gardens, food, friends, curiosities, art and travel, why she chose to shut down her business rather than sell it, and rolling down 40-foot waves in the Indian Ocean. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a Text Message. What if a popular dating app became the perfect hunting ground for a serial killer? On this gripping episode of Murder and Mimosas, we unravel the bone-chilling story of Stephen Port, a man who transformed from a troubled child into a notorious predator using platforms like Grindr to lure his unsuspecting victims. We kick off with Stephen's unsettling early life, his struggles, and peculiarities, followed by his journey from art school dropout to an inconspicuous chef. Learn how Anthony Walgate, an aspiring fashion designer, tragically fell into Stephen's deadly trap, marking the beginning of a horrifying series of events. As we continue, discover how Stephen's cunning use of technology allowed him to commit his heinous acts undetected, despite leaving clues that should have led to his capture much sooner. Hear the disturbing details of a suspicious suicide note from one of his victims, Daniel, and the pivotal CCTV footage that finally put an end to Stephen's reign of terror. We'll also discuss the police's handling of the case, drawing parallels to other infamous killers like Jeffrey Dahmer, and examine the institutional failings that allowed Stephen to evade justice for so long. To cap it all, we explore the bizarre twist of his appearance on UK MasterChef, adding another layer to this already unsettling case. Today we are joined by the self described blind guy who wants to show you the world, Amar Latif. Due to an incurable eye condition, Amar lost 95% of his sight by the age of 18. Through sheer determination, he has managed to turn a tale of loss, into one of truly inspirational achievement. Amar became known to millions through the groundbreaking BBC series Beyond Boundaries, which followed a group of disabled adventurers trekking 220 miles through Central America. The experience showed Amar that being blind didn't have to mean never seeing the world, but when he sought to take his adventures further afield he found himself facing rejection after rejection. Conventional travel companies refused to take him as an independent blind traveller, and so Amar set out to establish a company that would. Determined to travel the world, and to empower thousands of other blind travellers to do the same, Amar founded Traveleyes. Now a world-unique, award-winning tour operator, offering over 70 destinations a year, and providing an innovative way for blind and sighted travellers to explore the world together.Amar has since worked on numerous tv programmes including River Walks, which recently won a Royal Television Society Award for ‘Best Single Documentary', Celebrity Masterchef and Travelling Blind, which saw Amar partnered up with comedian Sara Pascoe as they travelled through Turkey together, demonstrating the dynamics of travelling as a sighted and visually impaired duo.I loved chatting to Amar, his enthusiasm and passion for travel is completely contagious, and he's one of my best travelled guests, having visited over 100 countries. He takes us from Morocco to Mecca, and from Cuba to Cape Town and much more.Destination Recap:Blackpool, EnglandMecca, Saudi ArabiaMedina, Saudi ArabiaCanadaLake Titicaca, PeruNicaraguaHavana, CubaCienfuegos, CubaTrinidad City, CubaSanta Clara, Cuba Varadero, CubaAlgamitas, Andalucia, SpainAtlas Mountains, MoroccoCape Town, South AfricaJapanThe Gambia Cornwall, England, UKMasai Mara, KenyaThanks so much for listening today. On September 20th, 2014, dog walker Barbara Denham entered the walled graveyard of St. Margaret of Antioch church in Barking, London. She saw a young man sitting up against the cemetery wall amidst the ruins of the old abbey. As Ms. Denham approached, the young man never reacted or indicated that he heard her or the collie. Hesitantly, she walked over and found that twenty-one-year-old Daniel Whitworth was dead. Ms. Denham immediately phoned the police saying, “I was the same woman that found the other body a few weeks ago. I found another young boy.”Join Jen and Cam as they talk about how the murderous and lascivious behavior of Stephen Port would go unchecked by authorities. The investigation has been described as "One of the most widespread institutional failures in modern history" In fact, had it not been for the sisters of his last victim, Jack Taylor, he would have likely continued killing. Thanks to the OTCP teamListener Discretion by Edward @OctoberpodVHS.
