Curriculum Controversy: Are Florida Schools Whitewashing Black History?

Are Florida schools about to see a re-imagining of African-American history through an incorrect curriculum lens? In a unanimous vote, the state's Board of Education approved standards, which to some seem to recast critical aspects of Black history. Among the changes middle school students will be taught how slaves applied developed skills for personal benefit, raising eyebrows and questions about its implications. Also causing concern are the alterations in high school teachings of 20th-century anti-Black violence. Notably, these lessons now emphasize acts of violence perpetrated against and by African-Americans. Critics argue that such framing could be misleading and is just lying, given that incidents such as the Ocoee Massacre were instigated by white mobs against Black communities. These curriculum modifications echo the efforts of Governor Ron DeSantis to eliminate what he perceived as potentially distressing historical topics for students. Last year, his controversial Stop WOKE Act was struck down by a federal judge as a violation of the First Amendment. But DeSantis' determination seems undeterred. Learn more about your ad choices. Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-sum of the time you should skip traveling to places where your race is an indignity to the state. I'm talking about Florida, a usual suspect in the denial of basic human rights, but the entire United States is guilty of denying that there's a "race problem" in the country of Washington and Lincoln, and then with a stubborn attitude, refusing to ameliorate the societal ills created by our "race problem." If there's one thing we're gonna do, it's get in our own way. The sources used in this episode: "NAACP Issues Travel Advisory for Florida." May 20, 2023. Retired Florida professor Marvin Dunn has been dismayed at recent efforts to battle so-called critical race theory and limit the way educators can talk about race. Last year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law the Stop WOKE Act, which mandated that public schools teach race in a manner where students would not “feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress for actions, in which he or she played no part.”Like many educators, Dr. Dunn feared this would create an environment where teaching hard truths about history is discouraged. He decided to start the Teach the Truth tour. This week, Trymaine Lee hops on the tour bus with Into America to speak with Dr. Dunn and students about what's at stake when it comes to learning the truth about American history. They visit historic sites related to the Ocoee Massacre, the lynching of Willie James Howard, and the Black town of Rosewood, which was destroyed a hundred years ago by a white mob.Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts? Here are your hosts, Tina Dunbar and Luke Flynt. [00:00:43] Luke Flynt, Host: We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. Those are words that all school children learn when studying the history of our nation's founding, but those words have a complicated history and students are right to have questions about them. Even at the time they were written those words certainly did not apply to all men, and forget about them applying to women. Let's consider just some facts from Florida history. The 1860 Florida census shows that 44% of the entire state population was enslaved. Fast forward 60 years, and on November 2nd, 1920, 50 African Americans were killed, and the entire black population of Ocoee was forced to leave the town simply for trying to exercise their right to vote.  Three decades after that on Christmas day, 1951, the home of Harry and Harriet Moore was fire bombed, and they both lost their lives. They were targeted because they were organizing their community to ensure equitable education for black students and equitable pay for black teachers. Their perpetrators were never charged, much less convicted. And all this and the country that was founded on the idea that all men have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? [00:02:20] Tina Dunbar, Host: Well, Luke, we all know the tension between the word is found in the founding documents, and the reality of life in America still exists today. A good example occurred over this past summer. We saw the state board of education pass a new rule relating to the teaching of American history, that many educators fear will have a chilling effect on instruction. While it's quite common for the state board to pass rules on what must be taugh...

Thing discussed: The university’s report and recommendation that Fielding Yost’s name be removed from Yost Ice Arena, and the history of racism at the University of Michigan. Panel: Mostly fine with renaming the building, think it’s a small gesture and the story is much larger, involving most of those in power at the University of Michigan and other institutions around the country before, during, and after Yost’s life. Seth: Racism is quiet. It’s not about smoking guns and bad actors—it’s a culture that puts the feelings of racists over equality and a system of keep things “pleasant.” The “Moral Map” standard versus the reality that of Michigan’s 103 building names, all but one—the William Trotter Multicultural Center—are named for white people. Trotter’s lesson: You have to agitate. Craig: We should be Seth: 13.5% of my graduating class in 2002 was African-American; the last class was 4.4%. Report issues: Didn’t talk to the experts like John Behee whose information was used. Craig: It read less like a history and more like a legal brief, and he was really bothered that it made Gerald Ford out to be a hero. Willis Ward does not support that story. Seth: Michigan was different from other schools because they had protesters against sitting their Black player. Yost hired Pinkertons, who found three leaders of the protesters whom President Ruthven dismissed. Brian: Doesn’t that disqualify him from having a building named for him? Seth: Sure, but it’s a small part of a much greater system that’s still in force today. Sam: Highlight the student response. Highlight history. Discusses historical events of attacks on Black communities, and their resonance in events today. Seth: Example of Belford Lawson Jr. (read the article here). Same movements we have today. Same reactions we have today. Sam/Seth: History of Ocoee Massacre on Election Day 1920 in response to Black registration to vote, and how these stories are not told, kept quiet, specifically because they resonate with the same issues today. Michigan must teach this part of their history—name of a building is such a small part. You have an opportunity here to apply some function by teaching people, and open up the conversation again to real changes. Do more than being symbolic. Seth: Story doesn’t end with Yost. Crisler’s Quota system is visible in the team photos.

www.thejulyperryfoundation.com Our ancestors would never imagine that Kamala Harris would make  history as first woman of color elected as Vice President and before her Barack Obama made history as first man of color elected as President because of the systemic racism our ancestors endure over generations for the right vote. So I thought it was  important to tell the story of Julius July Perry. Who is Julius July Perry?  Mr. Perry was a black enternpuer and one of the wealthy man in Ocoee who tried diligently to get black  people  to vote on Election Day 1920, but an armed white mob lynched him and killed other black resident.   They burnt down homes and churches to end any generational and political wealth for decades which is known as the Ocoee Massacre of 1920. I had the privilege to talk to Pam Gardy, she is executive director of The July Perry Foundation with the help of my cohost Greg Burnham, he is the co-creator of Tuskegee Heirs and creator of The Search of Sadiqah to discuss the life and death of Julius July Perry...

On November 2nd 1920, in the town of Ocoee Florida, July Perry and Mose Norman, two very affluent and influential African Americans, were refused their right to vote, despite already paying the voting tax. Blacks had essentially been disenfranchised in Florida since the turn of the century, but Norman and Perry were among those working on the voter drive. Norman contacted Judge John Cheney, who told him that interference with voting was illegal and told him to write the names down of the African Americans who were denied their constitutional rights, as well as the names of the whites who were violating them. Norman later returned to the polling place in Ocoee. Whether Norman came with a shotgun is not entirely clear, but whites at the polls drove off Norman by using his own shotgun, according to witnesses. A few hours later a white mob surrounded the home of July Perry, where Norman was thought to have taken refuge. After Perry drove away the white mob with gunshots, killing two men and wounding one who tried to break into his home, the mob called for reinforcements from Orlando and Orange County. The whites from surrounding areas came to Ocoee and obliterated the African-American community in northern Ocoee and eventually killed Perry. Hundreds of other African Americans fled the town, leaving behind their homes and possessions. Listen in and they discuss this tragic and little known event.
