This week's episode of the podcast with Megan Young, Performance Coach with the Seattle Sounders professional soccer club. Megan is a rockstar with 15 years of experience working in collegiate athletics, and men's and women's professional soccer. She's the 2023 National Strength and Conditioning Association Professional Coach of the Year and a voracious learner with numerous degrees and certifications on her resume. This was the first time I've ever spoken to Megan and it felt like catching up with an old friend. Megan has an incredible story and mission. In addition to her coaching successes, she was a collegiate thrower at UNC-Wilmington, she's survived acute myeloid leukemia, and, as she wrote to me in some of our initial correspondence, her purpose in life is “building community and impacting others through education of a high performance lifestyle.”We covered a lot of ground in this conversation, including where her insatiable appetite for learning comes from, the importance of establishing effective communication strategies with athletes and colleagues, and what she means by living a high-performance lifestyle. Megan told me who and what opened her eyes toward coaching as a career path, what that path has looked like for her over the past 15 years, and why she believes coaches need coaches. She also talked about the importance of care and connection in the role of a coach, understanding the difference between passion and purpose, her personal goal to impact 100 million lives through her work, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by:— Tracksmith. And a lot of times that means just going out and standing beside them.  I mean, when I was in the Parks Department, sometimes it meant helping somebody put a bench together.  And they would talk to you in that process and you'd kind of hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.  But a lot of times it was the most valid of the truth that you were hearing. WENDY GROUNDS:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers.  Thank you for joining us today.  My name is Wendy Grounds, and joining me in the studio is Bill Yates.  We want to take a moment to specially say thanks to our listeners who reach out to us and leave comments on our website or on social media.  We love hearing from you, and we always appreciate your positive ratings and reviews on whichever podcast listening app you use. Our guest today is Megan Young.  She currently serves as the Assistant Manager to the City Manager for the City of Greenville, South Carolina.  Prior to joining the City Manager's Office, Megan was the Parks and Grounds Administrator for the City of Greenville.  Megan is a certified project management professional and certified park and recreation professional. During her time in the PRT department, Megan led the implementation of the Cityworks program as a work and asset management system.  She managed large and small-scale infrastructure projects and was integral in the successful reaccreditation of the Greenville Zoo in 2020.  And she's going to tell us a bit about that project today. BILL YATES:  I'm excited about this.  We are going to talk about the zoo.  We're going to talk about spider monkeys.  We're going to talk about parks and recreation.  And I've got to go ahead and just let you know, too, this is near and dear to my heart because I went to Furman University, which is in Greenville, South Carolina.  Now, I graduated in 1980 [mumbling] something. WENDY GROUNDS:  It's a while back, yeah. BILL YATES:  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  And Greenville at that time was just not cool.  It is super cool now.  And a lot of it is because of Megan and the team there at the City of Greenville and what they've done.  They've got an amazing Liberty Bridge and Falls Park area.  There's the Swamp Rabbit Trail which my wife and I have actually ridden bikes on and walked along.  It's just beautiful.  So Megan's going to talk to us about a number of parks and different projects that they've done.  But this is, again, it's special to me because she's talking about an area that is a rich part of my history. WENDY GROUNDS:  Yeah, that's really cool.  I've driven through Greenville.  I've never stopped there, but I think after this podcast I'm definitely going to take a stop next time I plan on driving through. BILL YATES:  Definitely. WENDY GROUNDS:  Hi, Megan.  Welcome to our podcast. MEGAN YOUNG:  Hi,

As the third Covid-impacted school year draws to a close, we sat down with two experienced teachers to get their take on this school year and the importance of cultivating positive relationships with parents and students. Here are your hosts, Tina Dunbar and Luke Flynt. Tina Dunbar, Host: Hello, and welcome back to Educating from the Heart. I'm Tina here with my co-host, Luke. Luke Flynt, Host: Hey, Tina. Tina: Well, Luke, you know, May is a very special month for teachers, and I'm not referring to the end of the school year or summer vacation. I'm talking about a special event that encourages us to pause for a moment and reflect on the people who work in our schools and contribute so much to our children's lives. And while that moment is only a week showing teachers and all educators that we appreciate their work is an act that needs to occur throughout the school year. Of course, Luke, we all know that showing a little gratitude and appreciation really goes a long way. Luke: It really does. And showing that appreciation is important, perhaps now more than ever because when you talk with teachers, you will hear that so many of them, especially experienced educators, feel that this year has been the most difficult of their careers. Between the stress of teaching during a global pandemic, the seemingly endless attacks from certain politicians, outrageous testing policies that negatively impact teaching and outside groups trying to form a wedge between parents and teachers, I can certainly understand why this year has been so hard. Tina: And to complicate the situation, some parents who homeschooled their children during the pandemic now believe they know the teaching experience and understand the pressure points and frustrations that classroom teachers face.  Yet during many of our podcasts, Luke, you know our listeners heard from teachers who shared their feelings of being misunderstood, unheard and above all disrespected. Teachers have told us one of the main reasons they walk away is poor working conditions, unreasonable demands, and an unrealistic expectation that they face each and every day. You know, if we really care about our educators, then we ought to recognize working under these conditions could make the job unbearable for even the best teachers. Luke: Oh, absolutely. It is important to remember though, despite all of the loud voices screaming at school board meetings, the rhetoric coming from the governor's office, parents still rate their public schools very highly, and they have respect and admiration for their children's teachers. Tina: And that is so true. As we move through the waning weeks of the school year, we figured this would be the perfect time for our listeners to meet a couple of exceptional educators from St. John's County. And they are on a mission to help their students and parents. Morgan Mousley and Megan Young share their recipe for building positive relationships with parents and the impa...

Here are your hosts, Tina Dunbar and Luke Flynt. [00:00:43] Luke Flynt, Host: We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. Those are words that all school children learn when studying the history of our nation's founding, but those words have a complicated history and students are right to have questions about them. Even at the time they were written those words certainly did not apply to all men, and forget about them applying to women. Let's consider just some facts from Florida history. The 1860 Florida census shows that 44% of the entire state population was enslaved. Fast forward 60 years, and on November 2nd, 1920, 50 African Americans were killed, and the entire black population of Ocoee was forced to leave the town simply for trying to exercise their right to vote.  Three decades after that on Christmas day, 1951, the home of Harry and Harriet Moore was fire bombed, and they both lost their lives. They were targeted because they were organizing their community to ensure equitable education for black students and equitable pay for black teachers. Their perpetrators were never charged, much less convicted. And all this and the country that was founded on the idea that all men have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? [00:02:20] Tina Dunbar, Host: Well, Luke, we all know the tension between the word is found in the founding documents, and the reality of life in America still exists today. A good example occurred over this past summer. We saw the state board of education pass a new rule relating to the teaching of American history, that many educators fear will have a chilling effect on instruction. — The most important part of grief that you must understand, especially if you have family or friends who are grieving too, is that everyone will grieve and react differently. Every aspect of your grief may be opposite of your mother's, sister's, father's, friend's, or partner's. Once you accept that you have no control over other people's actions or grief, you can focus on your needs and give others the acceptance they need to focus on their grief as well. Valeria Teles interviews Megan Young — the author of “Life After Loss Workbook: Guided Exercises & Practices to Help You Understand Grief Following The Death Of A Loved One.” Megan Young is a trained life coach with experience in life transitions and grief. Through the experience with her life coach 13 years ago, Megan discovered the life changing effect powerful questioning, accountability and solution-based guidance provides. It wasn't until the passing of her sister that she felt a calling to transition into her current role as a life coach and author of the Life After Loss Workbook. Coach Megan's strong curiosity with human behavior and healing drives her to find innovative and effective techniques for helping her clients. Whether you are transitioning into a different career, experiencing grief, or entering into a new life stage, you will find the support and guidance you need. Megan and her husband have two sons, Dudley the cat and 11 chickens. As a small-town girl who escaped to the city, she finally embraced the saying, "You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl" and moved to the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin. There, Megan loves to lend support and encouragement to her community, family, and friends. In light of recent events I wanted to release an extra, time sensitive episode.  Last week at the NCAA basketball tournament a social media post showing the disparities between the men's and women's “weight rooms” went viral. One photo resulted in a litany of content that uncovered not only differences in the equipment and facilities, but of the testing protocols, food, “swag bags” and more.  With institutions and individuals calling on the NCAA to rectify the inequities displayed at their premier championship event, we wanted to give a platform to those voices, address the larger issues and talk to someone who can help us understand the context and what we can do to prevent this in the future.  Megan Young's entire life purpose is about facilitating meaningful connection, and she's used the arena of strength and conditioning as a vessel to carry out that mission having worked in collegiate and professional settings over the course of 14 years.  She's also a survivor. Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2015- Meg is no stranger to overcoming various forms of struggle. Her relentlessness for education, performance and equality is bookmarked by dual masters degrees (one in exercise physiology, another in information systems and data science) as well as a PHDC in adult education. Put simply, Meg has an astute understanding of both the complex and the complicated- both of which serve as home and hearth of the matter we discuss today.   If you want to get in touch with Meg: Via email: Youngstrength.megan@gmail.com Via Instagram: @coach_megastrong Via Twitter: @coachmega   We also want to give a massive thank you to our sponsors for this episode:  SAGA Fitness VersaClimber Momentous  For more information and discount codes from all of our sponsors, check out www.artofocoaching.com/sponsors

CVASPS Podcast, Strength and Conditioning Info From The Worlds Top Sport Performance and Physical Preparation Practitioners

“Different sports require different capacities, mentally and physically.” “If you need to reset and you’re seeking that more then once a month you need to change your environment.” What’s up everybody and welcome the 24th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the High Performance Director with the Chicago Red Stars Megan Young. Megan, thanks for being with us. Before we start, who is Megan Young? Megan Young is a connector. 1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career Different growth points of who am I along the way, starting with football and basketball, but moving more towards soccer that taught her outward presentation doesn’t mean as much as communication. Understanding who she was as a person and knowing that in and out, not being dependent of where she’s working and what she’s doing professionally. 2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why? It would relate to partial physics because we are so close to understanding neutrinos and their effect on our actual aura. 3) What’s your escape? I have my “corner” where I start my day, but going out to Hawaii and unplugging. We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows.
