8.14.2023 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: Republican assault on education; Racist attack on black historian; Remembering Clarence Avant Republicans continue to attack facts and education, this time with the North Carolina Republican-controlled House passing a bill to ban public school teachers from compelling white students to feel guilty or responsible for past actions committed by people of the same race. We will break down when this law goes into effect and what this means for students in North Carolina.  But the impact of the anti-factual history crusade conservatives have waged against education doesn't stop there. We'll be discussing how the state of Arkansas has recently withdrawn approval for the Advanced Placement African American Studies course in the high school curriculum. We explain why they revoked the system just days before the school year started. A Florida federal jury convicted a white man for a racially motivated attack against Historian Marvin Dunn and five other Black Men at the historic Rosewood Massacre site. Historian Marvin Dunn'll join us to discuss what happened and the verdict's significance 100 years after the Rosewood Massacre. Lastly, we'll honor the life and legacy of Clarence Avant, the record executive known as the 'Godfather of Black Music,' with people who knew him best.  Download the Black Star Network app at http://www.blackstarnetwork.com! When Ed Goodwin moved with his parents to Greenwood, Tulsa, in 1914, his family joined a growing community on the cusp of becoming a national center of black life. But, just seven years later, on May 31, 1921, the teenaged Ed hid in a bathtub as a white mob descended on his neighborhood, laying waste to thirty-five blocks and murdering as many as three hundred people. The Tulsa Race Massacre was one of the most brutal acts of racist violence in U.S. history, a ruthless attempt to smother a spark of black independence. But that was never the whole story of Greenwood. The Goodwins and their neighbors soon rebuilt it into “a Mecca,” in Ed's words, where nightlife thrived, small businesses flourished, and an underworld economy lived comfortably alongside public storefronts. Prosperity and poverty intermixed, and icons from W.E.B. Du Bois to Muhammad Ali ambled down Greenwood Avenue, alongside maids, doctors, and every occupation in between. Ed grew into a prominent businessman and bought a newspaper called the Oklahoma Eagle to chronicle Greenwood's resurgence and battles against white bigotry. He and his wife, Jeanne, raised an ambitious family, and their son Jim, an attorney, embodied their hopes for the Civil Rights Movement in his work. But by the 1970s, urban renewal policies had nearly emptied the neighborhood, even as Jim and his neighbors tried to hold on to it. Today, while new high-rises and encroaching gentrification risk wiping out Greenwood's legacy for good, the family newspaper remains, and Ed's granddaughter Regina represents the neighborhood in the Oklahoma state legislature, working alongside a new generation of local activists. In Built from the Fire: The Epic Story of Tulsa's Greenwood District, America's Black Wall Street (Random House, 2023), journalist Victor Luckerson moves beyond the mythology of Black Wall Street to tell the story of an aspirant black neighborhood that, like so many others, has long been buffeted by racist government policies. Through the eyes of dozens of race massacre survivors and their descendants, Luckerson delivers an honest, moving portrait of this potent national symbol of success and solidarity—and weaves an epic tale about a neighborhood that refused, more than once, to be erased. Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-sum of the time you should skip traveling to places where your race is an indignity to the state. I'm talking about Florida, a usual suspect in the denial of basic human rights, but the entire United States is guilty of denying that there's a "race problem" in the country of Washington and Lincoln, and then with a stubborn attitude, refusing to ameliorate the societal ills created by our "race problem." If there's one thing we're gonna do, it's get in our own way. The sources used in this episode: "NAACP Issues Travel Advisory for Florida." May 20, 2023. Shortly after the Civil War and as recently as 1954, whites exercised systemic racism against Blacks through violent expulsions, land grabs, and terrorism robbing them of land, property, and businesses. Many times these terroristic incidents resulted in Blacks being murdered while being driven from their homes and off their land. Listen as Dr. Carol François and Kourtney Square describe the hidden history behind one such incident and how modern day land grabs are depriving Blacks of wealth. Topic: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is trying to control the type of education that Florida students can receive, most recently rejecting an advanced placement course in African-American studies, claiming it was “contrary to Florida law” and “significantly lacking educational value.” The law he is referring to seems to be the "Stop Woke Act" that basically gives him the power to downplay the true racial history of America. This has impacted many educators, but there are some in the state who refuse to back down. Dr. Marvin Dunn, one of the preeminent historians in Florida, is defying DeSantis's law restricting lessons on race. He joins Tavis for a conversation about why he continues to fight to keep Black history alive – even if comes at a personal cost. Bio: A former naval officer, Marvin Dunn is a Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychology at Florida International University, retiring as chairperson of the department in 2006. He has published numerous articles in leading newspapers on race and ethnic relations including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Orlando Sentinel and the Miami Herald. He is the author of the following books: The History of Florida: Through Black Eyes, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (2016), Black Miami in the Twentieth Century, University Press of Florida (1997). He is the coauthor of This Land is Our Land, California: University of California Press. (2003) and The Miami Riot of 1980: Crossing the Bounds, Lexington, Massachusetts: D.C. Heath (1984). He has produced three documentary films including, “Rosewood Uncovered,” documenting the Rosewood Massacre of 1923, “Murder on the Suwanee: The Willie James Howard Story,” the story of the lynching of a fifteen year old black child in Live Oak, Florida in 1944 and “Black Seminoles in the Bahamas: The Red Bays story” which documents the flight of slaves from Florida escaping to the Bahama Islands in the 1800s and “The Black Miami” based upon his book, Black Miami in the Twentieth Century. He was born and raised in Florida and currently lives in Miami, Florida. In the wake of the killing of George Floyd, Dunn and other community advocates for racial justice founded the Miami Center for Racial Justice. According to Dunn, “ The Miami Center for Racial Justice will be a beacon in our community. We seek to foster a safe space for dialogue on racial issues, to promote unity, and allow for frank confrontation of the history of racial terror through the examination and preservation of stories of racial terror in Florida.”

On January 1, 1923, dubious claims of a sexual assault from a white woman against an unidentified Black man in the small community of Rosewood between Gainesville and Cedar Key set off a sequence of events that would leave untold numbers of people killed and Rosewood burned to the ground. The event was completely forgotten and erased, except by those who experienced it and lingering myths and rumors in the area. Then Gary Moore visited in 1982, completely unaware of what had happened there, stumbled on the story, and began reporting for the St. Petersburg Times, reporting which eventually led to his book, "Rosewood: The Full Story."

Hey there, ghoul friend! Thanks for hanging out with us today, where we explored two very dark stories of REAL history. We searched around for some of the darkest TRUE histories that you won't find in a textbook or classroom. Sam started the episode with the terrible truth about the Rosewood Massacre, where a whole town was burnt to the ground and several people were murdered in cold blood, over a false allegation and people's skin color. Kati continued with her segment about the untold facts about the Black/Bubonic Plague. She talks about all of the terrifyingly painful symptoms of the disease, how quickly (and how) it would kill someone, and the lengths people went to cure themselves of it. We end the episode on a lighthearted note, with some serious historical TEA! #history #historytheydidntteach #historylove #podcastrecommendation #podcast Thank you for watching! In studying the systemic devaluing of Black life, it is important to understand how Black life is also - and often - devalued even after death. Like victims of other similar racially motivated or violent atrocities, the victims of Rosewood never had the proper burial that is custom in Black communities. This was not uncommon during the era of the Jim Crow South. Efforts are underway to discover where Rosewood Massacre victims are buried and if there is a way to give them the burial they deserved. Retired psychology professor and historian, Dr. Marvinn Dunn is among those leading these efforts. While Black people have not lived in Rosewood for years, Dunn has purchased five acres of land in Rosewood “to save the piece of Rosewood for history” so that people can visit Rosewood and walk on that ground without being accused of trespassing. While the events leading up to, during and after the Rosewood Massacre have heavily influenced the trajectories of so many involved as well as their descendants, even if that trajectory has been disadvantageous for Rosewood victims, survivors and descendants, it is not fixed. Guest in this episode also include A. Donahue Baker, co-founder, Money Avenue, LLC, who has worked hard to change the economic trajectory of his life and that of his community.
