Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Rethink Priorities' CEO announcement, published by Rethink Priorities on July 18, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Rethink Priorities (RP) is excited to announce that Marcus A. Davis is now RP's sole CEO. Former Co-CEO Peter Wildeford will remain at RP, focusing on projects in artificial intelligence. He will also continue his work as Chief Advisory Executive at the RP-sponsored think tank, the Institute for AI Policy and Strategy (IAPS). Since 2018, co-founders Marcus Davis and Peter Wildeford have served as Co-CEOs of RP. Their joint leadership has grown RP from a two-person research team into an international research organization with 60+ staff working around the world. Their guidance has helped expand RP's research areas to include animal welfare, global health and development, and artificial intelligence policy. The decision to transition to this new leadership structure comes after discussions around the opportunities for RP's future growth, Peter's expertise and interests, and developments in the artificial intelligence landscape. Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Jay G. Tate and Sir Brian Stultz return with a show centered on Hugh Freeze's remarkably successful first Early Signing Day. He was a flippin' fool — snagging eight players who were headed for other Power Five programs before changing course and signing with the Tigers. How did Freeze pull that off? How much work is left to do? The guys also discuss the hire of Marcus Davis as wideouts coach. Former Auburn player who's been a model citizen and coach everywhere he's been? Seems like a win to us, though he doesn't have as much CURB APPEAL as some other guys Freeze considered. And what about the Fightin' Pearls? They're 10-2 as they open conference season Wednesday night against the hated Florida Gators. The loss at USC was stinky, but the win at Washington was a true tour de force that provided a perfect stepping stone into SEC competition. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Rethink Priorities' Leadership Statement on the FTX situation, published by abrahamrowe on November 23, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. From the Executive Team and Board of Directors of Rethink Priorities (Peter Wildeford, Marcus Davis, Abraham Rowe, Kieran Greig, David Moss, Ozzie Gooen, Cameron Meyer Shorb, and Vicky Bond). We were saddened and shocked to learn about the extremely serious alleged misdeeds and misconduct of Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX. While we are still trying to understand what happened and the consequences of these events, we are dismayed that customer funds may have been used improperly, and that, currently, many customers are unable to retrieve funds held by FTX. We unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms condemn any potential fraud or misuse of customer funds and trust that occurred at FTX. The actions that Bankman-Fried and FTX have been accused of are out of line with the values that we believe in and try to represent as an organization. At this time, Rethink Priorities remains in a stable financial and legal position. We do not plan on laying off staff or cutting salaries in response to these events or to the changed financial condition of the EA space. However, the strategies of our General Longtermism, Special Projects, and Surveys teams were partly based on the existence of FTX funding for Rethink Priorities and others in the EA community. For the time being, we've mainly paused further hiring for these programs and are revisiting our strategies for them going forward. We've decided that hiring for our Special Projects team, which was already in progress before we learned about the FTX situation, will proceed in order to evaluate and onboard new fiscal sponsees. Unfortunately, this situation does impact our long-term financial outlook and our ability to keep growing. Rethink Priorities continues to have large funding needs and we look forward to sharing more about our plans with the community in the next few days. We will need to address the funding gap left by these changed conditions for the coming years. In terms of legal exposure, Rethink Priorities' legal counsel are looking into the possibility of clawbacks of funds previously donated to us by FTX-related sources. At this time, we are not aware of any other significant legal exposure for Rethink Priorities or its staff. Prior to the news breaking this month, we already had procedures in place intended to mitigate potential financial risks from relying on FTX or other cryptocurrency donors. Internally, we've always had a practice of treating pledged or anticipated cryptocurrency donations as less reliable than other types of donations for fundraising forecasting purposes, simply due to volatility in that sector. As a part of regular crisis management exercises, we also engaged in an internal simulation in August around the possibility of FTX funds no longer being available. We did this exercise due to the relative size and importance of the funding to us, and the base failure rates of cryptocurrency projects, not due to having non-public information about FTX or Bankman-Fried. In hindsight, we believe we could have done more to share these internal risk assessments with the rest of the EA community. Going forward, we are reevaluating our own approach to risk management and the assessment of donors, though we do not believe any changes we will make would have caught this specific issue. As mentioned above, Rethink Priorities is receiving legal advice on clawbacks, and we are happy to share resources with other organizations that are concerned about their exposure. We cannot provide legal advice, but we are able to provide information on our own response—please reach out to Abraham Rowe (abraham@rethinkpriorities.org) for more information. Thanks for listening. This is: Animal Welfare Fund: April 2022 grant recommendations, published by kierangreig on August 25, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction The Animal Welfare Fund made the following grants in March and April 2022: Total grants: $2,215,000 Number of grantees: 25 Acceptance rate (excluding desk rejections): 29% Payout date: March - April, 2022 Report authors: Kieran Greig (Chair), Alexandria Beck, Karolina Sarek, Marcus Davis, Mikaela Saccoccio The three primary areas we granted to in this round were: Large-scale and neglected animal populations (for instance, farmed fish). Large-scale and neglected geographies (for instance, work in medium or large Asian countries). Exploratory work regarding policy and/or alternative proteins (for instance, attempting to secure government funding for research and development of alternative proteins). Would you like to get funded? Apply for funding. Highlights Notable grants for this round included: Anonymous($185,000): This grant will support piloting a new fellowship program to help address talent bottlenecks in Southeast Asia. We think the leaders of this program are thoughtful, aligned individuals with impressive track records. Southeast Asia is one of the areas that we're particularly excited about further work in, because it is a highly neglected area for farmed animal advocacy. We believe this fellowship program could become key infrastructure for scaling work in this region in the future. Australian Alliance for Animals ($50,000): Initial seed funding for a new organization to unite the Australian animal protection sector with the aim of increasing its political influence. This seed grant supports some very experienced and aligned advocates in transitioning into a full-time Australian policy/advocacy group. We believe this is particularly valuable because policy will be an area of significant growth for the movement. Shrimp Welfare Project ($45,000): This will support a relatively new group to work with farmers and the rest of the supply chain in India and Vietnam to improve farmed shrimp welfare. There is no other animal welfare group explicitly focused on shrimp. This could eventually impact upwards of several billion shrimp every year. Grant recipients In addition to the grants described below, 1 grant (totalling $42,000) have been excluded from this report at the request of their applicants. See below for a list of grantees' names, grant amounts, and brief grant descriptions: Wild Animal Initiative ($400,000): General operating expenses to cultivate an academic field dedicated to wild animal welfare. Rethink Priorities ($250,000): Support for wild animal welfare and invertebrate welfare research for a year. Anonymous ($185,000): A year's funding to continue the capacity-building work through the pilot Southeast Asia Farm Animal Welfare Fellowship. Cambridge Effective Altruism CIC ($130,000): Funding for Cambridge EA's alt-protein field-building efforts for a year. Africa Network for Animal Welfare ($105,000): Campaigns against battery cages in East Africa and researching the state of caged chicken farming in West Africa. Animal Alliance Asia ($100,000): Culture-specific workshops for animal welfare advocates to increase efficacy in Asia. Çiftlik Hayvanlarını Koruma Derneği (Farm Animals Protection Association) ($100,000): A year's salary for new hires and other costs to increase capacity for cage-free campaigns and fish welfare outreach in Turkey. Insect Welfare Project (temporary name) ($100,000): Launch lobbying, investor and producer campaigns in insect farming and to slow the growth of this sector. CellAg Germany ($98,000): 1-year salary for a general manager of CellAg Germany to accelerate cellular agriculture through policy work & services. Eurogroup for Animals ($96,000): Funding staff to hinder EU deregulatio...

In today's episode, I speak to Marcus Davis. Marcus is a hitting coach in the private sector but has been on each side of the spectrum from former Midland and professional player to now coach of the 17U Braves. He brings a wide variety of content about college recruiting, working with players, parents' expectations, and hitting as well.He talks about working with players in the cage.Learn about work habits and the ability of players to work through some adversity in this episode.SHOW NOTES[2:38] What's been your experience you coaching travel baseball last couple of years?[3:36] What are you looking for when it comes to just players on your team obviously you can't take everybody. What type of players are you looking for?[5:02] These days it seems that there are probably way more kids feeling that they're a top prospect when they're not actually but because of how early a lot of the recruiting is and social media. How did you handle the hype?[6:40] Do you see that though with other kids nowadays where they get some attention and then they maybe get a little bit complacent they stop working because they get an offer really early on for big schools?[9:34] Why do you need to be traveling all over the country if you're already really good at getting offers at a young age?[11:30] How do you go about choosing the tournaments that you guys are going to play in?[12:20] Are you guys able to practice during the summer and how does that work with the travel schedule?[13:49] You played at junior college in Walters state and then went on to Florida state, so you went from a junior college to a power five school. [22:33] How could you expect these parents and players to know what it's like?[28:39] Why did you decide to go to a power five school?[29:45] You already had performed at junior college which is good baseball it wasn't like you went from high school.[32:24] What if his thing is I might go to JUCO for a year and then try to transfer but he already has division one offers?[38:11] How do you go about helping your own guys?[40:43] Is there a system you have when it comes to working with guys?[42:48 ] If you're hitting baseballs over 100 miles an hour you probably don't need to set aside just an hour focused solely on bat speed training.[50:23] What's the best way for someone to contact you if they want to hit with you?FOLLOW MARCUS:Twitter: @_thehittingMDPatrick Jones Baseball See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

From black urban farms to traditional soul food kitchens to fine dining…Houston has a vibrant black food scene.  We call this the “Who Made the Potato Salad?” episode to reference a specific cultural tradition.  If you show up at any holiday meal or family cookout in the black community you will notice that everyone gathered will look at treasured family dishes like potato salad, mac and cheese, sweet potato pie and ask…who made this? These dishes are so important that only trusted family members are allowed to be involved in their preparation. Inevitably, when an ambitious relative tries to innovate on the traditional recipes and a simple question of “who made the potato salad” becomes a lesson in family traditions and a cautionary tale. On this episode, I talk to some of the most successful chefs and restaurateurs from Houston institutions—Craig Joseph who is the third-generation owner of This Is It, Marcus Davis from The Breakfast Klub and Top Chef finalist Dawn Burrell. I discuss black food traditions, the elevation of soul food, and maybe a few tips for your holiday preparations. I also want to know what happens when culinary school meets the family cookout!! All this and more and this episode of I See U.
