Today's teacher is renowned historian Patrick Griffin. Patrick is the former chair of the Department of History at the University of Notre Dame. In 2021, he was named the Harold Vivian Harmsworth Visiting Professor of American History at the University of Oxford, perhaps the highest honor an American historian can receive. He joined us to explore “The Lessons of History” by Will and Ariel Durant, a book that has been repeatedly recommended to us over the years by some of the world's most compelling investors, leaders, thinkers, and builders. To quote the late great Charlie Munger, who was also a student of Durant, “There is no better teacher than history in determining the future.” This 100-page book is a masterful distillation of Durant's 11-volume 10,000-plus page magnum opus, “The Story of Civilization.” Whether you're looking to develop better pattern recognition in your work, or perhaps more existentially how to begin to even think about how and what to paint on this precious canvas that we call a human life. We hope you enjoy this class on “The Lessons of History” with the esteemed Patrick Griffin. The Second Continental Congress voted for independence on July 2, 1776 with 12 colonies and one abstention. The delegation from New York abstained from the vote. And Pennsylvania voted in favor of independence because two of its delegates were persuaded not to attend the vote given their opposition. Within days of the Boston Massacre, Bostonians politicized the event. They circulated a pamphlet about “the Horrid Massacre” and published images portraying soldiers firing into a well-assembled and peaceful crowd. But why did the Boston Massacre happen? Why did the British government feel it had little choice but to station as many 2,000 soldiers in Boston during peacetime? And what was going on within the larger British Empire that drove colonists to the point where they provoked armed soldiers to fire upon them? Patrick Griffin, the Madden-Hennebry Family Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame and author of The Townshend Moment: The Making of Empire and Revolution in the Eighteenth Century, joins us to answer these questions as we continue our 3-episode investigation of the Boston Massacre. Originally released June 23, 2011 but relevant once again after a lengthy espn.com piece last week, it's Host Gill Alexander's interview w Sean Patrick Griffin, Author, "Gaming the Game: The Story Behind the NBA Betting Scandal and the Gambler Who Made It Happen”. From the time the NBA betting scandal was first reported in mid-2007 through the late 2009 release of the book from the referee at the center of it all, the media and public were transfixed by all things Tim Donaghy. But until the publication of “Gaming the Game”, there had been no examination of the true architect of the entire real life drama. Griffin joins Gill for a wide-ranging exchange about the central figure of the scandal, Jimmy “Baba” Battista, the many questions pertaining to the NBA and Las Vegas sportsbooks that still surround the saga, and whether it’s likely that similar improprieties exist throughout the sports world. Plus, Donaghy claims are debunked, on a classic edition of the Beating The Book podcast (February 25, 2019).
In our fourteenth episode, we sit down with Patrick Griffin, longtime Wilmington resident and esports aficionado, to talk about the evolution of video games, the arrival of esports and the Fortnite craze that is taking the world by storm. At the beginning, we discuss the unique challenge of connecting with students in Christian ministry & the role that video games play in building meaningful connections with them (03:30). Then, we dive deeper into our first experiences with gaming and break down the similarities and differences between traditional video games and this current era of esports (06:00). After the break, we reflect on how Fortnite completely upended the video game industry and paved the way for a new wave of free, downloadable, highly engaging game content accessible on a variety of platforms (19:40). Next, we talk about the rise of esports streaming and the creation of new esports celebrities through the rapid growth of streaming platforms like Twitch (22:05) and wonder whether the esports revolution is helping or harming society through its intentionally addictive gameplay (30:05). Finally, we question the role that our faith plays in our consumption of and attitude toward esports and video games (39:35). Thanks for listening! "How do Jacob's get the figs into their Fig Rolls?" Well Jim Figgerty was purportedly the only man who knew this secret and he was the star in an iconic series of ads in the '60s. Paddy Griffin was the actor who brought Jim Figgerty to life. Here Wendy Williams, curator of the 'Jacobs Biscuits & Dublin' exhibition talks to his son Gerry Griffin and his granddaughter Elaine Griffin about Paddy and his alter ego Jim Figgerty! Gerry Griffin is the son of singer and actor Patrick Griffin who played the infamous Jim Figgerty in the Jacob's advertising campaign of the late 1960s and early '70s. He recounts stories of his fathers singing career before he took on the Figgerty role and his own experiences as a child when his father became identified as the famous missing fig roll filler. The Jacob's Biscuit Factory Archive is held at Dublin City Archives for more see www.dublincityarchives.ie
