On October 3, 1759, a company of nearly 120 men under the command of Major Robert Rogers attacked an Indian Village on the St. Francis River between Montreal and Quebec, killing most of the occupants and looting and burning the Jesuit Mission that supported the town. The loot taken from the church included gold candlesticks, coins, a gold calf, and a ten pound silver statuette of the Madonna holding the baby Jesus. This was done during the French-Indian War, and as the raiding party escaped southward the French and their Indian allies the Abenaki were in hot pursuit of Rogers Rangers, who had hundreds of hard miles to cross and no food or supplies to support them. the Ranger party split up, many died, and much of the stolen treasure, including the Madonna, was lost in the New England wilderness. The historical value of the Silver Madonna, which has never been found- priceless. This is the story. In this episode of Politically Incorrect History Craig, Ian and Justin talk about the French Indian War Disclaimer: This will be very different from other podcasts. Craig and Ian are historians....but also pure degenerates. They both listen to the Cumtown Podcast and love comedians like Shane Gillis. Thus they got the bright idea of having quite a few drinks and started a podcast where they tell history....or atleast history related stuff off the cuff, probably incorrectly. Craig, Ian and Justin had a few drinks and watched "Canada a Peoples History Episode 4, the French Indian War" and this inspired them all to rant about it. Craig accuses the show of being propaganda, Ian rants incoherently about things and Justin wishes he never agreed to be on the podcast. If you actually like this style of content let Craig and Ian know by checking out the Pacific War Channel discord server and commenting "give us more Politically Incorrect History!"
John and Olly chart the route from the French Indian War to the Boston Tea Party in the emergence of America.
While part of the colony of Virginia, modern day West Virginia was called TransAllegheny, a Latinized term meaning “over the Allegheny” mountains. It was allegedly Native reserve territory but that officially changed with the French & Indian War. In this period, the idea of the region being its own self-governing entity was hatched. My guest this week is the legendary filmmaker John Sayles, who has just written an epic novel, Jamie MacGillivray, set during the French & Indian War. We talk about the history, Native American tribes and Scotland at the time of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. The French & Indian War was part of the wider Seven Years War conflict, which Winston Churchill described as the first world war.John's films have a strong historical theme, so we discuss his career, and go on to talk about filmmaking today, and the new challenges posed by streaming services.John Sayles LinksJamie MacGillivray: The Renegade's JourneyLone Star (1996)John on TwitterAspects of History LinksAspects of History's Top 10 War Films - Aspects of HistoryOllie on Twitter

As the British and French colonies in North America expanded in the middle of the 18th century, they inevitably clashed. Fighting between the two sides and their respective Native American allies began in Ohio Country (now western Pennsylvania) in 1754. Dan Snow tells Don how the fighting began in 1754 in Ohio country (now western Pennsylvania) and spread, over almost a decade, across the disputed territory in the Great Lakes region and into New France (modern-day Canada). As a result of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the war, France's presence in North America was all but ended. They were left only with the small islands of St Pierre and Miquelon, off Newfoundland.Produced by Benjie Guy. Mixed by Aidan Lonergan. Aracoma, the daughter of Shawnee Chief Cornstalk, saved the life of Boling Baker, a deserter from the British army during The French & Indian War. They would marry and he was taken into the tribe just as she was put in possession of the Shawnee territory of western Virginia. Their story is of the kind of tragedy and heartbreak that affected the native peoples and those who tried to live in harmony with them while Great Britain's quest for empire was forever changing North America.

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #127 Dave Laird Dynamic Combative Solutions LLC This summer I was invited to participate in a class sponsored by FASTER Saves Lives (FSL). Check them out: they're working to arm students and school staff! There were several instructor and podcast friends taking the class that were part of the “media people” who were going to talk about and promote what FSL is doing. Dave Laird was also a student in the class. He is a member of Arizona Citizens Defense League (AZCDL). He's also an instructor and founder of Dynamic Combative Solutions, LLC. Which is why he outshot everyone in the class! Dave grew up around firearms and many family members were in the military from before 1776, during the French & Indian War. As a teen he moved back to Pennsylvania and his grandmother taught him a lesson in hunting: he isn't taking lots of ammo-he got one round. He did martial arts when he was young and knew he'd be heading to the military. After doing well in MEPS test, he still wanted to jump out of airplanes. He was with the 82nd Airborne Division, in the infantry, heavy tank weapon specialist, heavy weapons squad leader, and a designated scout sniper for his unit. He often got gigs where the others had to try and “beat the crap” out of him. And he seemed to enjoy it. So he shared some stories about Round Robin and the final testing. After the military, he wasn't sure where life would take him. It took him to be a contractor for a few years. After getting out of that, he went home and did some church security and did some volunteering with a local sheriff's department. Teaching church security teams, he had a friend who opened a shooting range where he started to instruct some high level classes. He noticed that not all of the students had the same basic training and he designed a solid curriculum for everyone to work from. He found that he was thriving while managing the training schedule and training the trainers. He tied everything together and created Dynamic Combative Solutions, LLC, with all his experiences. Part of the reason Dave was at the FASTER Saves Lives (Levels 1 & 2) is that the Arizona Citizens Defense League (AZCDL) wants to bring FASTER to Arizona! Both Dave and Cheryl Todd to the Level 1 & 2 courses so they can bring back some knowledge about the program and share it with schools in Arizona. The FASTER Program isn't just shooting its active shooter training. It's beyond the basics of shooting. We did some advanced shooting, one handed, non-dominant hand, as well as in various stances and distances. There was some trauma first aid, which was new for me. The last training day was intense. We went to a real school (which wasn't in session) and did some force on force scenario training. Just for the record, I was shot 4 times by my bad guy. But I also yelled and swore at him… before I started shooting. That was my mistake. Well well well, here we are. Home state time. Creepy Ohio is where we are heading today! We're probably going to skip over the big boys like the Ohio State reformatory and places like that because well… You know about them. There will be plenty of good stuff though we promise! Let's start off in good ol… Dayton? Sure Dayton it is! We're going to visit the Victoria Theatre. Fun fact about this place...The Victoria is one of the oldest continually operated theaters on the continent! It cost $225,000 to build and opened as the Turner opera house in 1866. If you're wondering, that's just under 4 million in 2021 money. According to an article, newspapers at the time called it the best theater west of Philadelphia! Impressive! General admission was $1. The best seats in the house were between $10 and $12. Arson was suspected of having caused an all-consuming fire May 16, 1869, which destroyed the theater at a loss of $500,000, about 10 million today, of which insurance covered only $128,000, 2.5 million, so that sucks pretty bad. The rebuild took a few years and the theater reopened in 1871. The opera house resumed operations as "The Music Hall". In 1885 it became "The Grand Opera House". On September 18, 1899, it became the "Victoria Opera House", and in 1903, it became the Victoria Theatre, two years after the death of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Smooth sailing from here on out right? Wrong? 1913 brought about the Great Dayton Flood. The Dayton flood of March 1913 was caused by a series of severe winter rain storms that hit the Midwest in late March. Within three days, 8–11 inches (200–280 mm For all you civilized people out there) of rain fell throughout the Great Miami River watershed on already saturated soil, resulting in more than 90 percent runoff. The river and its tributaries overflowed. The existing levees failed, and downtown Dayton was flooded up to 20 feet (6.1 m) deep. This flood is still the flood of record for the Great Miami River watershed. The volume of water that passed through the river channel during this storm equaled the monthly flow over Niagara Falls. Daaaaaaaang! The ground floor of the theater was severely damaged. The theater's interior was rebuilt and remodeled. Ok now that disaster is out of the way…. Wait… What's that? There's more? Jeez… On January 16, 1918, fire struck again and gutted portions of the building. Due to WW1 the rebuild was delayed due to a materials shortage. After the Armistice, The Victoria saw extensive interior remodeling and in 1919 re-opened as "The Victory Theatre" – a name commemorating the American war effort and its result. For many years after this, the theater had an amazing run and saw many of the top performers of the days come through. Al Jolson, The Marx Brothers, Helen Hayes, Fannie Brice, George M. Cohan, Lynn Fontayne, Gertrude Lawrence, Alfred Lunt, and some schhlub named Harry Houdini were just some of the big names to grace the theater! In the thirties the theatre was fitted to also play talking pictures! Here's another fun tidbit of trivia, chainsaw was one of the pioneers of talking pictures! He started in the first talkie ever, it was called, "I Can't Believe This, What is this voodoo?" It was not good. In fact, don't look it up on YouTube, it's really really bad. Over the years the change in times and the way the city of Dayton was headed, threatened to close the theater. In 1975 it was slated for demolition, in favor of a proposed parking lot. A public outcry for the theater's preservation that year helped to earn the building its listing in the National Register of Historic Places and, thus, it escaped demolition. However, portions of the building were in poor or fading condition. All the while, it continued to be visited extensively by traveling theater companies. The theatre had a network of access tunnels stretching out beneath the city's streets for several blocks. It was said that, during Vaudeville times, the tunnels allowed circus animals to be unloaded from railroad cars blocks away from the theatre, and held underground until showtime. As late as 1979, much of the tunnel network was accessible to employees, although some sections were blocked off by city steam pipes. In 1978, the theatre was greatly benefited by the donation of a cache of equipment and stage draperies from National Cash Register's (NCR) auditorium, which had been slated for demolition. NCR also donated its historic five-rank Estay pipe organ to the Victory, which was renovated and installed by aficionados. In 1986, Virginia Kettering donated $7 million to fund a downtown arts center, conditioning her donation on the requirement that the center include the Victory Theater and be located within the same one-block area. The 1989 rebuilding of the theater was extensive. It involved razing the interior commercial space within the forward, Main Street-facing section of the building as well as the stage house, while carefully preserving and restoring the 1866–71 facade and the 1919 auditorium. At the same time, the interior auditorium portion of the structure was completely renovated. All of the commercial space at street level was reclaimed for a grand, new lobby. The result was an extensively-new Victoria Theatre (as it was now so renamed) designed expressly for the performing arts. The auditorium retained its original appearance with completely restored plaster work, drapery, marble work, gilding, and fresco detailing. Additionally, the house received state-of-the-art upgrading to its wiring, lighting, and sound systems and now accommodated infrared sound transmitters for headphone use. The current theater accommodates 1,154, with 635 seats in the orchestra, and 519 in the balcony. The proscenium measures 37'7" wide by 29'0" high by 39'3" deep. A full-sized orchestra pit lies just below the stage lip. Ten dressing rooms, accommodating up to 18 people, are off-stage left, in the basement and at stage level. You know we love to get the history of these places and this one is pretty cool. So what about creepy stuff? Well let's check it out! First off according to a dayton.com article, there's the story of a touring actress in the early 1900s who went to her dressing room to change for the next scene, and never came out of the room. No trace of her was ever found, though fewer and fewer actors would use that dressing room, with reports that some would look into the mirror and see her face staring back again. The same article talks about how in the 1950s, a man committed suicide in the theater by wedging a knife into the seat in front of him and throwing himself upon it. When the curtains around the left exit door are pulled, some people claim to see his face. Staff members through the years have said they heard strange noises like the rustling of satin or taffeta, or suddenly smelled the scent of roses in the air. Others are said to have seen the ghost of the Victoria's founder when they're alone in the building. Diane Schoeffler-Warren, Victoria spokeswoman, told us that many of the historic theater's long-time volunteers and staff like to blame these strange occurrences on “Miss Vicki,” who was not a real person. PARANORMAL FINDINGS Staff, patrons and performers have had a boatload of experiences with the spirits who visit or reside here. Project Paranormal Investigations caught some hard evidence that greatly increases the known number of spirits who adore this theatre. Apparently, the spirits here are a talkative group. They caught a boatload of EVP's of many spirits. One spirit once worked there as an usher, some crew members, actors and actresses, a director and a well dressed man with a dirty hat who watches people who come into the auditorium. One EVP possibly suggests that the spirit of Vicki's killer is grounded here. “They will never catch me!” This well-dressed man could be the spirit of the Victoria's founder keeping a close eye on the living and still enjoying his theer. Spirits freely gave up their names: Isaac, Jacob, Alice, Jennifer Price, Bill and Miss Josephine Swartz who was a well-known ballet instructor. One male spirit pleaded for help. One gruff spirit didn't believe he was dead, and asked the investigator. “Do you want to fight?” This fiesta spirit said that the year was 2000. One male spirit keeps the spirit of Vicky company. Hopefully he is a friend and her protector. There was a negative, evil one there as well, reported by the other spirits. This spirit said that he was sent to keep another spirit stuck here. That's…. Nuts...ooh boy. So that's fun stuff, haunted theaters are always good. Where should we head now? How about a lunatic asylum that's now part of a college… We know that seems crazy but just run with us. The Ridges, a building formerly known as the Athens Lunatic Asylum, has been a constant source of ghost stories and sightings for years. The Ridges, was a Kirkbride Plan mental hospital operated in Athens, Ohio, from 1874 until 1993. After a period of disuse the property was redeveloped by the state of Ohio. Today, The Ridges are a part of Ohio University and house the Kennedy Museum of Art as well as an auditorium and many offices, classrooms, and storage facilities. The original design included an administration building with two wings, one that would house the males and the other for females. The building itself was 853 feet long, 60 feet wide, and built with red bricks fired from clay dug on-site. Built onto the back were a laundry room and boiler house. Seven cottages were also constructed to house even more patients. There was room to house 572 patients in the main building, almost double of what Kirkbride had recommended, leading to overcrowding and conflicts between the patients. The administrative section, located between the two resident wings, included an entrance hall, offices, a reception room on the first floor, the superintendent's residence on the second floor, and quarters for other officers and physicians on the 3rd and 4th floors. A large high ceiling amusement hall filled the 2nd and 3rd floors, and a chapel was included on the 4th floor. Behind and beneath the building's public and private spaces were the heating and mechanical systems, kitchens, cellars, storerooms, and workspaces. The site, which was first comprised of 141 acres, would eventually grow to 1,019 acres, including cultivated, wooded, and pasture land. The grounds were designed by Herman Haerlin of Cincinnati and would incorporate landscaped hills and trees, decorative lakes, a spring, and a creek with a waterfall. Not only would the patients enjoy the beautiful landscape, but citizens also enjoyed the extensive grounds. Though the facility would never be fully self-sustaining, over the years, the grounds would include livestock, farm fields and gardens, an orchard, greenhouses, a dairy, a receiving hospital, a Tubercular Ward, a physical plant to generate steam heat, and even a carriage shop in the earlier years. The hospital, first called the Athens Lunatic Asylum, officially began operations on January 9, 1874. Within two years, it was renamed the Athens Hospital for the Insane. Over the years, its name would be changed many times to the Athens State Hospital, the Southeastern Ohio Mental Health Center, the Athens Mental Health Center, the Athens Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center, and the Athens Mental Health and Developmental Center. During its operation, the hospital provided services to a variety of patients, including Civil War veterans, children, the elderly, the homeless, rebellious teenagers being taught a lesson by their parents, and violent criminals suffering from various mental and physical disabilities. With diagnoses ranging from the slightest distress to severely mentally ill, these patients were provided various forms of care, many of which have been discredited today. The asylum was best known for its practice of lobotomy, but it was also known to have practiced hydrotherapy, electroshock, restraint, and psychotropic drugs, many of which have been found to be harmful today. More interesting are the causes listed for admission, including epilepsy, menopause, alcohol addiction, and tuberculosis. General “ill health” also accounted for many admissions, which included in the first three years of operation 39 men and 44 women. For the female patients hospitalized during these first three years of the asylum's operation, the three leading causes of insanity are recorded as “puerperal condition” (relating to childbirth), “change of life,” and “menstrual derangements.” According to an 1876 report, the leading cause of insanity among male patients was masturbation. The second most common cause of insanity was listed as intemperance (alcohol). Depending upon their condition, a patient's treatment could range from full care to amazing freedom. Over the years, numerous buildings were added, including a farm office, a new amusement hall, additional wards and residences, a laundry building, power plant, garages, stables, mechanics shops, a firehouse, therapy rooms, and dozens of others. By the 1950s, the hospital was using 78 buildings and was treating 1,800 patients. In the 1960s, the total square footage of the facility was recorded at 660,888 square feet. At this time, its population peaked at nearly 2,000 patients, over three times its capacity. However, the number of patients would begin to decline for the next several decades as de-institutionalization accelerated. As the number of people at the Asylum declined, the buildings and wards were abandoned one by one. Comprised of three graveyards, burials began soon after the institution's opening as there were deceased patients who were unclaimed by their families. Until 1943 the burials were headed only by stones with numbers, with the names of the dead known only in recorded ledgers. Only one register exists today, which contains the names of 1,700 of the over 2,000 burials. In 1972 the last patients were buried in the asylum cemetery. Today the cemeteries continue to be maintained by the Ohio Department of Mental Health. In 1977, Athens Asylum made news when it housed multiple personality rapist Billy Milligan. In the highly publicized court case, Milligan was found to have committed several felonies, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and three rapes on the Ohio State University campus. In preparing his defense, psychologists diagnosed Milligan with multiple personality disorder, from which the doctors said he had suffered from early childhood. He was the first person diagnosed with multiple personality disorder to raise such a defense and the first acquitted of a major crime for this reason. Milligan was then sent to a series of state-run mental hospitals, including Athens. While at these hospitals, Milligan reported having ten different personalities. Later 14 more personalities were said to have been discovered. After a decade, Milligan was discharged. He died of cancer at a nursing home in Columbus, Ohio, on December 12, 2014, at 59. The next year, the hospital made the news again when a patient named Margaret Schilling disappeared on December 1, 1978. It wasn't until January 12, 1979, 42 days later that her body was discovered by a maintenance worker in a locked long-abandoned ward once used for patients with infectious illnesses. Though tests showed that she died of heart failure, she was found completely naked with her clothing neatly folded next to her body. More interesting is the permanent stain that her body left behind. Clearly, an imprint of her hair and body can still be seen on the floor, even though numerous attempts have been made to remove it. By 1981 the hospital housed fewer than 300 patients, numerous buildings stood abandoned, and over 300 acres were transferred to Ohio University. In 1988, the facilities and grounds (excluding the cemeteries) were deeded from the Department of Mental Health to Ohio University. The Athens Center officially closed in 1993, and the remaining patients transferred to another facility. The property stood vacant for several years before restoration began. The name of the property was changed to the “Ridges” and in 2001 renovation work was completed on the main building, known as Lin Hall. Today it houses music, geology, biotechnology offices, storage facilities, and the Kennedy Museum of Art. Over the years, other hospital buildings were modeled and used by the University, although many others still sit abandoned. wow… Crazy stuff. The info and the history cave from a great article at legends of America.com. When the University took over the property, some students began to spend time at the Ridges. This is when many reports of paranormal activity began to surface. This includes hearing disembodied screams in the middle of the night, electric anomalies, rattling door handles and vanishing spectral images. Some of these events occurred in the area where Margaret Schilling's remains were found and, were thus, attributed to her. Her spirit is said to have appeared staring down from the window of the room where her lifeless body was discovered. Her apparition has been seen attempting to escape. Others have seen her wander in various parts of the building at night. Other former patients are also said to remain in residence as well. Visitors have reported seeing strange figures standing in the empty wings of the former hospital. Many have heard the disembodied voices of those in agony and warning those that wish to listen to them. You may also hear the squeaks of gurneys that are no longer there. Some folks see strange lights and hear screams echoing through the walls. More frightening, many have come across the spirits of patients in the basement, who remain shackled there in their afterlife. Sadly, these may be the many spirits who died or suffered at the hands of staff in the asylum. The cemetery is also said to be haunted by shadowy people and strange lights. In one area, the linear shapes of the graves form a circle, rumored to be a witches' meeting point. Let's switch it up for a minute and talk about Moody's favorite things … The cryptids! So what kind of cryptids can one expect to find in Ohio? Well we are gonna let ya know! Let's start with the Loveland Frogmen. Stories started popping out in the 50's, tales that differed slightly from one another, about a massive frog causing all manner of mischief. Most of the stories start the same but there seem to be three major variations. In one story, the motorist is heading out of the Branch Hill neighborhood when he shines his car's headlights on the huge figures. The trio stood on their hind legs and just stood in the middle of the road. The man honks his horn. The figures perk up. They twist their necks around. A gasp!!!! All three look at the driver with leathery skin and frog faces. Version number 3: same bridge, the motorist pulls over, he gets out of his car and spots the creatures. All three are conversing animatedly. The driver calls out to them. One of the Loveland Frogman gets up, points his finger at his friends in the universal gesture of “put a pin in it,” turns to the bothersome intruder, “can't you see we're holding a conversation? How rude,” holds out a wand over its heads, and flicks the Harry Potter approved apparatus… a blazing fire of sparks cannons out of the wand. The motorist flees the scene. The other version goes like this: the motorist spots the creatures under the Loveland bridge, one of many going over the Little Miami river – he honks his horn. The creatures shot out from under the bridge, one lands on his hood and croaks… the driver passes out. On 3 March 1972 at 1:00 am, the Loveland police department goose marched into the madness. Officer Ray Shockey was gliding his car on Riverside Drive near the Totes boot factory and the Little Miami River when a suspicious animal ran across the road in front of his vehicle. He hit his brakes. Hit the steering wheel and looked on. The animal, now fully illuminated in his patrol car's headlights, blinked at Shockey… who was having a meltdown true to his last name; Shockey was in shock. Framed in his car's lamp stood the legendary Loveland Frogman. Shockey reported the sighting and stated, “it's crouched like a frog.” The creature then climbed over the guardrail and jumped into the river. Two weeks after that wild incident, a second Loveland police officer, Mark Matthews, did Shockey a solid and reported seeing an unidentified animal, similar in height and facets, near the same road. And you know what… He shot the damn thing! That's right, killed it! Unfortunately Matthews didn't actually shoot a frogman…nope. According to Matthews, it was “a large iguana about 3 or 3.5 feet long”, and he didn't immediately pinpoint the creature's ID because it was missing its tail… not a freaking Loveland Frogman. “It either got loose or was released when it grew too large" In August 2016, local Cincinnati TV stations reported that "a night of fun turned into a chilling tale of horror" when two teenagers playing Pokémon Go between Loveland Madeira Road and Lake Isabella claimed to see a giant frog near the lake on August 3 that "stood up and walked on its hind legs".[7][8] It was later revealed to be a local student from Archbishop Moeller High School in a homemade frog costume. Real or not? We may never know! You don't believe in the Frogmen you say well how about the grass man! Often referred to as the Eastern Bigfoot, the Grassman is reportedly a 7-foot tall, 300-pound hominid. According to famed cryptozoologist, Loren Coleman, the Ohio Grassmen have a more human-like appearance and are more human-looking and are shorter than the classic “Bigfoot”. The Grassman is often seen around farms and especially eating tall grasses such as wheat, which is what its main diet is, and where its name comes from. In addition to a different diet, the Grassman also seems much more sociable than Bigfoot. Many Grassman sightings include more than one Grassman, and it is reported that mothers have been seen with babies. The first sightings of the Grassman date all the way to 1869, however, one of the most prominent sightings was in 1978. The grandchildren of Minerva residents Evelyn and Howe Clayton, along with their friends, ran inside screaming about a hairy monster they saw in the gravel pit outside. When the couple went out to investigate, they saw the Grassman, just as the children had described, and it quickly ran off. The family saw the creature a few more times, and claimed that it would leave the smell of rotten eggs wherever it passed through, though it never seemed to steal anything. Yet another Bigfoot-type creature lurks in Ohio, this time near Minerva. The Minerva Monster was first spotted by the Cayton family in the late 1970s when they followed the sound of their barking dogs to a pit on their property where they disposed of trash. Inside the pit, they found a massive, 7-foot tall, 300-pound creature, covered in fur, staring at them as they approached. The creature returned to the family's property so often that it was witnessed by several other friends and family members and even investigated by the sheriff. During the creature's final appearance at the property, two creatures were spotted after the home was pelted with several rocks while the family was inside. We suspect this may have been chainsaw. Although sightings continued in nearby counties, none were as detailed as the Cayton families, whose stories remained unchanged for decades. How about the Charles Mills Lake Monster! This mysterious cryptid has only been documented one time. In March of 1959, teenagers Denny Patterson, Wayne Armstrong, and Michael Lane were running amok near the shores of Charles Mills Lake when they saw something that terrified them. Out of the water came a 7-foot tall, armless, humanoid. The boys noted that the creature had glowing green eyes and massive webbed feet. After the boys reported what they had seen, authorities searched the area, finding footprints that they thought resembled tracks that scuba and snorkel diving fins would leave behind. Crosswick Monster Around 20 miles north of the Loveland Frogman's territory lies Crosswick. Although the monster hasn't been spotted in nearly 200 years, the legend of the Crosswick Monster is still told in the area. According to reports, two young boys were playing on the banks of a small creek when they were startled by a massive, snake-like creature. The monster sprouted arms and snatched one of the boys, dragging him nearly 100 yards to a massive sycamore tree that was assumed to be its den. The Crosswick monster dropped the child just outside a hole in the tree's bank. The 26-foot diameter tree was eventually chopped through by dozens of men from the town and when the serpent-creature reappeared, the men noted that it was between 12-14 feet tall. The monster escaped the men, crashing through a fence before darting into a cavern. The full description read, “It is described as being 30 to 40 feet long, 12 to 14 feet tall when erect, 16 inches in diameter, and legs 4 feet long. It is covered with scales like a lizard's, of black and white color with large yellow spots. Its head is about 16 inches wide, with a long forked tongue, and the mouth inside deep red.” Although the Crosswick Monster was never seen again, it is remembered as one of the most believable cryptid experiences in Ohio, as more than 60 men claimed to have witnessed it. Dogman Described as a werewolf-like creature, the Dogman has reportedly been seen all throughout Ohio. Eyewitnesses describe the Dogman creatures as between 4-6 feet tall, often very muscular, and with pink or gray skin. It is sometimes seen on all fours or walking bipedally. One of the most recent accounts was in 2016 in Allen County. The Dogman is typically associated with Michigan, but in the past decade, several sightings have taken place throughout Ohio, an understandable migration. Ok so let's get back to creepy places! How about a haunted hotel? The Buxton inn fits the bill! Buxton Inn was originally called the Tavern and it was built in 1812 by Orrin Granger. Today, the Buxton Inn is the oldest continuously running inn in Granville, Ohio. Aside from being an inn, Buxton also served as Granville's first post office and a stagecoach stop. The Buxton became very popular and was patronized by no less than President William Harrison himself. After Orrin Granger died, ownership of the inn changed. Although it went through several owners, it never closed down because of its popularity. In 1829, more additions were constructed for the building. In the 1850s, the inn was purchased by James W. Dilley and it was renamed to “The Dilley House”. Major Buxton and his wife acquired the property in 1865. They attracted many guests and the inn continued to thrive under their ownership. After the death of the Buxtons, retired opera singer Ethel Bounell took over the inn. The current owners of the inn are Orville and Audrey Orr. The Buxton Inn's long history lives on with the ghosts frequently seen there, the majority of which are the ghosts of its former owners. The first ghost ever reported at the hotel was Orrin Granger in the 1920's who built the hotel in 1812. During the 70's, workers of the inn saw a man dressed in blue and since then they have refused to enter the inn after dark. Major Buxton (the man who the inn was named after) is also said to haunt the inn. He has been spotted in several locations around the inn. Ethel “Bonnie” Bounell, the former innkeeper, is said to have died in room number nine. Guests who have stayed in the room have reported seeing a lady dressed in blue, Bonnie's favourite color. Shadowy figures have been seen in rooms number seven and nine and even in the basement. Guests have also felt the presence of a ghostly cat jumping on their beds. Other reports include heavy doors slamming shut and opening of their own accord, with no apparent breeze or other valid explanation. People have also reported hearing footsteps behind them in empty hallways, and their names being called out. Definitely spooky… anyone want to take a trip to hell? No? How about just helltown? Well that is where we're headed! The village known as “Helltown” is purportedly teeming with crybaby bridges, spooked school buses, mass human sacrifice scenes, and a mutant python for good measure. The extreme folklore surrounding the region formerly known as Boston, Ohio is ironic since the only verifiable legend about the town is that it is deserted for a very frighteningly tragic reason. Founded in 1806, Boston Village's original claim to fame was its standing as the oldest village in Summit County. Boston's relatively uneventful life took a turn for the worse in 1974, when it became the unlucky victim of nationwide anxiety over the country's disappearing forestland. Using the laws of eminent domain, President Gerald Ford signed a bill that gave the federal government's National Park Service jurisdiction to expropriate land for the establishment of National Parks. The NPS decided that Boston Township would be the new home for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and began buying the properties of its longtime residents. The sentiment among citizens who had no choice but to leave their homes was expressed in a message scribbled on the wall of one of the houses: “Now we know how the Indians felt.” The empty homes were boarded up and adorned with U.S. “No Trespassing” signs. The government quickly fell behind on its plan to create the park and the village sat neglected. The remaining buildings, remnants of a “vanished” town, have created a fertile soil for the innumerable urban legends that have popped up over the years. The hellish aura of the area only continued to grow when the NPS acquired Krejci Dump in 1985. Rangers visiting the site became ill and covered in rashes. It was soon discovered the dump was highly polluted with toxic chemicals improperly disposed of. The dump became a Superfund site and as of 2015 the NPS is wrapping up restoration of the area. Helltown is home to six or seven separate legends, which has led this area in Boston Township in Ohio to be grouped as one large haunted site. The overgrowth creates a dark, almost cursed place, where ghosts, cults, Satanists, and even a wild-eyed serial killer were said to lurk. Helltown is the nickname given to the northern part of Summit County. The areas most associated with the legends are Boston Township and Boston Village, as well as portions of Sagamore Hills. First settled all the way back in 1806, Boston stands as the oldest village in Summit County. The construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal brought loads of people to the region in the mid-1820s. The area then began to flourish when a railroad station was constructed in the town. The station was named ‘Boston Mills,' and the name stuck. Loads of legends come out of the Boston Cemetery, which sits deep in the middle of the area known as Helltown, including tales of a ghost who sits on a bench and stares out into space, forlorn, waiting for his family to come back for him. The only souls not forced to leave the area were the dead, now stuck in this abandoned ghost town, looking for their families which have left so long ago. There are two roads through Helltown, both labeled as ‘dead ends' even though you can watch them continue on into the distance. Legend says that local Satanic cults put up these signs to keep people out of their secret hideouts. Stanford Road, one of the main roads in Helltown, is sometimes referred to as The End of the World, or Highway to Hell. It is a twisting, dangerous road with a very sharp incline, so steep that when a car crests the top of the hill, it looks as if it is driving off a cliff. Some stories indicate that the road itself is evil, and is known to take possession of your vehicle, causing fatal accidents. It is said that if you park your car at the end of Stanford Road, you may meet your gruesome fate at the hands of the strange people who still patrol the area, protecting it. One rumor persists through the ages that the town's residents were actually evacuated due to a large chemical spill, and the National Park was just a cover-up. The chemical spills were said to have caused mutations in local children, and even created the Peninsula Python, a gigantic snake that slithers the area. An account given by a local paranormal researcher who explored the area truly sums up the overall vibe of Helltown – “I have experienced much in my explorations of there, some of which I don't care to remember and some of which I can never hope to explain. Helltown is not truly abandoned. It does have residents, but they are a strange and frightening breed. I have gone exploring the woods and cemetery of the area in the late night and wee morning hours, and have returned to my car to find strange people looking into its car windows. This has happened twice––once at 2:00 AM and once at 4:30 AM. Both times, the people fled as soon as they saw me approaching the car before I had a chance to speak to them. Both times, they were dressed in all black. A part of me is glad that I didn't get to converse with them because I have heard too many tales about the ways of Hell Town residents. Supposedly, they are all Satanists and worship at the town's two evil churches. I have been to both of these churches, however not inside them. One, the Mother of Sorrows, has upside-down crosses hanging from it. I have also been to the Boston Cemetery, where a ghost has been seen sitting on a bench. This cemetery is as dark a place as I have ever been. The graves date back to the early 1800s. I didn't see the ghost when I visited, but I did hear strange growls and howls from the depths of the graveyard. This was more than enough to convince me to leave, as the prospect of getting attacked by some strange boneyard dwelling beast was not appealing, to say the least.” Welllllll we might not be heading there any time soon! Ok we got one more place for ya. The Bellaire house. The history of Bellaire House stretches back to 1904, when it was constructed by Jacob Heatherington, who also owned a coal mine that ran directly beneath the property on Belmont Street. When the original owner died, he left the land and the five-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath house to his daughter Eliza and son Edwin. But not long after coming into her inheritance, Eliza Heatherington collapsed dead on the dining room floor in the house. Legend has it that her grieving brother became obsessed with the idea of communicating with his dearly departed sister from beyond and invited mediums from across the country to his home for that purpose. Paranormal researchers believe that it was Edwin Heatherington who, through his experiments with the occult, unwittingly opened nearly a dozen different portals to the 'other side' throughout the house, allowing malevolent spirits to cross over. Research suggests that the plot of land on which the house sits also conceals Native American burial caves, and it has been intimated, though not confirmed, that prior to the Civil War the site was part of the Underground Railroad used by fugitive slaves. The Bellaire House sits on what is known as a Leyline. This means there is a consistent wellspring of paranormal activity that goes all through the house. A virtual spring of ghosts coming back from the dead. Kristin Lee, the current owner of the house was affected by two floods which left her family homeless. After they moved into the home they saw “odd” things. Kristin Lee blamed everything except for the paranormal until the point when it was impossible to deny. She describes the history and her time there on the home's website. "The house gained a mysterious reputation even during the years when it was sitting abandoned. The neighbors in the area claimed to see people roaming around in the house or peeking out of the windows. This was when the house was locked and no one was living there. There were some who thought that the kids were up to something nifty, but when I moved in there, it didn't take long for its history to resurface because that's when paranormal activities in the Bellaire House began to manifest in more violent ways. Jacob Heatherington built the Bellaire House in the vicinity of sacred Shawnee Native American burial caves. That makes the house 172 years old. Those caves were right behind the Bellaire House and the Ohio River is right in the front. Physics proves that water is a portal because it is always moving and the magnetic pull of the water creates a powerhouse of energy where spirits can cut through earthbound gravity, gain energy to port back and forth from their dimension to ours. The craziest part is that the portal sits right under the Bellaire House. This area is still known as the Native American Internment Area. The thing is that the Native Americans who lived in this area used to bury their leaders, chieftain, shamans, healers, and witchdoctors in these caves. They used to hold their ceremonies in this area and practiced magic. In 1754 the French & Indian War rampaged through Bellaire. The native massacres by the hands of French soldiers were large. Blood still stains the grounds of the entire town of Bellaire. The residual energy of the slaughter still seeps inside the soil today. She goes on to say: Although Joe Estes & Associates cleaned the inhuman spirits, the house is always active to this day despite all the cleansing and Catholic rituals. The ley line over which the Bellaire House is built is one of the alignments of ancient monuments and prehistoric sites in straight lines. It is believed by some that it indicates paths of positive energy inherent in the Earth. The Bellaire House is on the tip of one of the most ancient ley lines in the world! This could possibly be the reason why the Native Americans chose the land that the Bellaire House sits on because it is supercharged with such a profound energy source that it caused a direct connection to the great spirit, the old world gods, and intergalactic beings! Research revealed that when Jacob Heatherington, who was a millionaire and used to run the city, died he left the coal mine company to his son Alex Heatherington, who was assisted by his daughter Lyde. Unfortunately, the business started to fail due to Alex hearing and seeing things that were not there. He also began to have epileptic seizures and declared that "demons were trying to kill him." Back then people believed that he was haunted and cursed because of the coal mine explosions. According to paranormal investigators, there are as many as 11 portals throughout the house. The most interesting thing is that no matter how hard paranormal investigators try, these portals refuse to stay closed. Edwin and Lyde were also known to have servants. Mostly, all of them were named Mary. There was one particular Mary that had a child inside of the Bellaire House and it was rumored that the child had the bloodline that was needed to allow an entity inside of the Bellaire House to grow stronger to do Lyde's bidding. There are village rumors that a servant's child was lured to the attic and plunged to his death out of the window. In March 1940, there was another explosion in the mines. This time in Coal Mine #2, which was commonly referred to as Willow Grove Mine at the time. It was about twenty minutes from Bellaire. The explosion trapped 180 men in the mine and took the lives of at least fifty men. Also, it left more than a hundred men burned and severely wounded. Although many members of the community tried to rescue the trapped men, only a few men could be saved. It's said that the rescue attempt continued for several days to no avail. This explosion at Coal Mine #2 further contributed to the haunting of the Bellaire House.. So what exactly happened to Kristen Lee and her family in that house. One day, Lee said she was home when she heard the sound of footsteps coming from the attic. She assumed it was her boyfriend, Jeff, whom she thought was working upstairs. When sometime later she heard Jeff come through the front door downstairs, Kristen was shocked, but figured that the noise she heard from the attic was just the old house settling. A few weeks later, Kristen was napping on the couch when she was awakened by a presence next to her. She opened her eyes to discover a man's greyish figure in a cap. She screamed in terror and demanded to know who he was. The man said nothing in response, got up from the couch, made his way to the foyer and vanished into thin air. Lee noted that her boyfriend and son were asleep at the time, but the family dog appeared panic-stricken. She also pointed out that it was so cold in the room she could see her breath. Lee says that was her first startling encounter with the supernatural inside the house, which she would later dub ‘a portal to hell.' In the following months, Lee and her family would allegedly experience strange voices and footsteps, objects moving on their own and ghostly figures popping up out of nowhere. It came to a point where Lee sent her youngest son to stay with her parents and her oldest with his father because she feared for their safety inside the house. Things finally came to a head one evening when Lee says the family dog was hurled against a bedroom wall by an invisible force, which at the same time pinned her down, rendering her motionless. After that incident, Lee and her family promptly decided to move and rent out the house, but her tenants did not linger there either. One family that briefly called Bellaire House their home allegedly lost six of eight family members while residing at 1699 Belmont Street. Kristen Lee then tried to offload the house by selling it to the town of Bellaire for a dollar, but there were no takers, as the locals were well aware of its bad reputation. Out of options she decided to turn the house into a spot where people could come and ghost hunt. And that is where it sits today. Maybe that'll be our next trip! That's since creepy Ohio for you! Again we left out some of the more well known stuff and didn't have room to include every cool thing so we may be back for round two of creepy Ohio say since point as well! Kim and Producer Steve note the American Revolution was a revolt against taxation without representation. Today we have taxation with representation, which begs the question, “Who is being represented?” Be diligent in the usage of words and counteract the narrative in place by the radical left. When freedom of speech is shut down, we are in a dangerous place. HB21-1207 Overpayment Of Workers’ Compensation Benefits and SB21-197 Workers’ Compensation Physician on the surface looks benign but the devil is in the details. The 2020 Census shifts district seats from blue states to red states. Colorado gains 1 Congressional District seat. Election integrity is of extreme importance. Term limits are debated. Jason McBride, Vice President with Presidential Wealth Management, comments that the markets continue to move upward. Now is a good time to plan for the future, and a ROTH account could work well into a financial portfolio. Pay taxes now instead of at higher rates as Biden introduces higher taxes. You can do a ROTH conversion without cashing in your funds. Give Jason a call at 303-694-1600 to discuss this strategy. Guest Ben Martin gives a summary of the ground covered in his series starting with the French-Indian War up to the Battle of Bunker Hill, including the formation of the Continental Army. Ben then explains how American patriots made their way to Charleston, South Carolina. After the Boston Campaign, troops walked to New York City at which point Major General Charles Lee made defensive plans because a city surrounded by water would be difficult to defend against the British navy. Lee is sent to Charleston and defends Charleston against the British under the command of Major General Henry Clinton and Commodore Peter Parker. The American defense on Sullivan's Island prevented the British ships from entering the narrow channel that led to the Charleston Harbor. This American victory resulted in support from the southern colonists for independence. Interesting to note that the revolutionary years are similar to today in that people are not given choices but were/are told what to think and say. The Revolutionary War denied the right of power to a “King.” Liberty is the responsible exercise of freedom.
So much history surrounds Niagara Falls it is near impossible to dive into: from initial exploration by white folk, exploitation of the falls and indigenous peoples, to the history of hydroelectric power, strange mortuary science experiments, and daredevils who have ridden down the falls in barrels (only some who have survived) – like the water over the crest, the history seemingly never ends. However, while Niagara Falls is heralded for its natural beauty, booming tourist trade, and rich history -- behind its bridal veil lies something sinister, brooding beneath the foam. Long time no see, you may have thought I became a ghost myself! My name is Joshua Spellman, and I'm your – very much alive – at least on the outside– host of Crimes & Witch-Demeanors. The podcast where we get to the good old fashioned truth behind our favorite ghostly haunts using archival and historic resources. Maybe you care where I've been. Maybe you were even happy to hear me go. Long story short – I was creatively and emotionally burnt out. I was pouring myself into this podcast, my drag, sewing garments, and cultivating my TikTok…and with things going on in my personal life I just crashed. I stopped doing everything. Had some health stuff to worry about but I digress! We're here. We're back. I'm going to do my best to stay motivated and on top of things, but this pod is a lot of work! Today's podcast episode is something new. And something I'm excited about. I don't want to give too much away… but we're going to investigate the satanic underpinnings of a famous worldwide attraction and city, that just so happens to be in my back yard: Niagara Falls. And also, one of my favorite hiking spots at the aptly named Devil's Hole. But be sure to stick around for the truth, as always it is much more interesting than the myth. So, for lack of a better word: let's dive right in. Niagara Falls – one of the seven wonders of the natural world, is a group of three waterfalls (the bridal veil falls, horseshoe falls, and American falls, respectively) that spans the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the state of New York. Located on the Niagara River, which drains into both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the combined Niagara Falls has the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America. More than 168,00 square meters, or six million cubic feet, of water goes over the crest every minute. So much history surrounds Niagara Falls it is near impossible to dive into: from initial exploration by white folk, exploitation of the falls and indigenous peoples, to the history of hydroelectric power, mortuary science experiments, and daredevils who have ridden down the falls in barrels (only some who have survived) –it seemingly never ends. However, while Niagara Falls is heralded for its natural beauty, booming tourist trade, and rich history -- behind its bridal veil lies something sinister, brooding beneath the foam. At first glance, it seems innocent enough – if you discount historic atrocities to its indigenous inhabitants – but as you peer a little closer a pattern emerges. Perhaps most glaringly, is Devil's Hole state park. Named as such for…no discernable reason. It is a park that overlooks and descends into the Niagara river gorge, a 6.8 mile long canyon with cliffs as high as 1200 feet, carved by the Niagara River. The hiking in this particular area can become quite hazardous. In fact, the current of the Niagara River in the gorge is one of the most powerful river currents in the world: which, unsurprisingly has taken many lives. Perhaps this is where its hellish name originates. Perhaps it is partially due to the famed cave halfway down the steep escarpment: the Cave of the Evil Spirit. While not a clever name, it sums up its origin quite well. Long ago, the Great Spirit who created man, sealed away the Evil Spirit within the walls of the Niagara Gorge. However, over time as man turned evil and began waging wars, the walls of the gorge began to split. Eventually, the cave opened and the Evil Spirit was once again free, cursing all those who entered the cave. Famously, the explorer Robert Cavalier de LaSalle ignored the warnings of his Seneca guide. Upon entering deep into the cave he heard a voice tell him "Return" said the voice, "to your home in Canada, and wealth, honors, a long life and usefulness will be yours, and when death comes, generations of your descendants shall follow you to your grave, and history shall transmit your name to prosperity as the successful founder of a great empire. Proceed to the West, and although gleams of hope may, at times, shine in your path, in gratitude and disappointment will be sure to meet and follow you, until a treacherous murder shall end your days remote from human habitation, without the shelter of even a wigwam of a friendly red man. The Eagles of the desert shall strip the flesh from your bones, which shall lay bleaching under the tropical sun, unburied and unprotected by the cross you now so devotedly cherish." LaSalle foolishly disregarded the warning of the Evil Spirit. LaSalle's fortune eventually dwindled and he became poor and desolate. In a last-ditch effort to regain his wealth and fame, he decided to go out west to Louisiana to begin a colony – doing exactly what the spirit warned him against. Even LaSalle's precious crucifix of his Christian god could not save him from the curse of the Evil Spirit. LaSalle was eventually murdered by his own men and left to rot in the woods near the Mississippi river. But the city's connection to the crowned prince of hell and malevolent spirits do not end at the mouth of the Niagara Gorge, instead we must look to the Niagara rapids at the top of the falls and turn our attention to five innocuous islands. Bisecting the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls is an island known as Goat Island. It is the location of the famed Terrapin point observation area and is large enough that it carries not only pedestrian traffic, but car and trackless train traffic as well. Goat Island is largely wooded with many nature trails. The island also provides access to the Cave of the Winds tour, which takes you down the escarpment to the foot of the falls. Just off the southern shoreline of Goat Island are the Three Sisters Islands. These small islands provide an excellent view of the upper rapids. They are connected by a series of bridges and consist solely of nature trails. Biologically speaking they are fascinating: each sports a variety of microhabitats and possess its own unique floristic character. However as is the nature of…well, nature, it is not all pretty petals. It is easy to access the raging rapids from these islands, which spell certain death for those unlucky enough to be swept into the current and hurled over the falls…that is if the large boulders hiding in the cataracts or the undertow don't do you in first. The Three Sisters islands were home to mysterious rituals before European settlers came to the area. Iroquois shamans would offer sacrifices and gifts to the spirit that dwells inside the mist shrouded cave at the base of the falls. Mediums and psychics who visit these islands in modern times can hear the voices and screams of spirits long gone. Lastly, there is Luna island. Which, like, Goat island, bisects two of the falls but unlike its larger counterpart it is situated between the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. Aside from sacrifices – you may be asking – how are these satanic? Let's take a closer look at the names. Devil's hole is quite obvious in its own right. And while innocuous at first glance you may now realize…Goat Island. The goat has long been a symbol of the horned demon Lucifer. Luna island. The moon. Where dark rituals take place beneath. And, the most insidious of these names: Bridal Veil Falls and the Three Sisters. It's subtle, but for those who know satanic lore, the Devil married Three Sisters. Niagara Falls has always been a nexus of spiritual and physical power: as evidenced by its hydroelectric powerplants and numerous malevolent hauntings and the spirits that Native tribes worshipped and feared. The city was erected and planned around these power sources, built to exploit them and harness them. Niagara Falls was created in the same fashion as Washington D.C. Both hiding occult symbols in their streets and place names, used to exploit the negative energies they draw forth, and route them to areas of their choosing. Next time you visit the falls, remember to hold that crucifix tight. Or don't…it didn't quite help LaSalle…did it? Wow, it's so crazy this isn't talked about more! All these satanic connections…that…I just made up? Yeah. I made it up. Kind of? All the place names are real but they're not satanic in origin. With all the crazy conspiracy theories flying around I wanted to illustrate how easy it is to draw lines between seemingly unconnected things and create a new narrative. To be clear: to my knowledge no one has drawn up these satanic connections before me. I did it while researching something else entirely and was like “wow these names really all have a connection to the devil” until I learned the real origins of these place names. The three sisters, goat island, luna island, the bridal veil falls, and devil's hole are all very real names. But they don't have any connections to satanism or the occult. But what they do have are really interesting and unique histories. Devil's hole and the Niagara gorge are two of my favorite places in the world. I have spent countless hours alone on those treacherous trails. The trails can be narrow and precarious, made from silty, crumbling rock, overhead you have the risk of huge boulders falling down, and directly below you is one of the most powerful river currents in the world. Of course my favorite time to go is when it's raining…which is pretty reckless. Probably the only reckless thing I like participating in willingly. But I do love it. I have a deep personal and spiritual connection to the area and learning it's history has definitely made me appreciate it even more. Sadly, people do die there. I know one individual personally who has. As with many things in nature it's to be both revered and feared. Nature has many sides, and sadly nature can also destroy. That being said let's talk about the history of Devil's Hole itself and the state park named after it. Devil's Hole The area surrounding Devil's Hole has a lengthy indigenous history long before white settlers came into the area. Devil's Hole received its name from either the story told earlier of the Evil Spirit or from the area's inhabitation by the Neuter Nation. When white settlers first appeared in the area the area was mainly inhabited by what the French called the Neuter Nation of Indians. It was used as a hiding place during times of war or conflict, and in order to keep their hiding place secret they would kill anyone who entered the gorge. These people would never return to tell of the location and this is possibly the root of the tale of the Evil Spirit. However, the same friend/medium that saw the Red Lady at my old house before I ever talked about her, which I still haven't told this story to y'all, came on a hike with me to Devil's Hole State Park. He was not from the area at all, not even from the region of the state, but he did mention he sensed a very old, angry spirit in the area. I didn't think anything of it…but now knowing of the Evil Spirit, I can't help but wonder…but again, I digress. What made Devil's Hole such a great hiding spot was not only that it is set in the cliff face but a rock, known as ambush rock was positioned perfectly above the cave that nothing could be shot down into it. The area is prone to rockslides…or boulder slides really, it's made of of massive limestone boulders. You would honestly be amazed by how large they are…but I digress. Ambush rock was removed for safety reasons, though a rock fall in the 1990's left a similar rock, albeit much, much smaller, at the entrance to the cave. According to an old brochure for the area published in 1890, at the top of the park, before you begin your descent into the gorge there is a large boulder, one of many, known as Council Rock. It was shaped like an arrow, but centuries of weathering slowly changed its shape, and it is now believed to have been removed since the brochure is over 120 years old. Council rock was a meeting place where yearly councils of Native people would take place. Others claim that it was a “worshipping stone” that was connected with indigenous “religion”. Legend has it that due to the way the Seneca Chiefs would stand on the rock during meetings, with one hand on the rock, that anyone who touches the rock can drive the devil away for a year. Of course, this narrative comes from white folk. Also just a great time to remind everyone that indigenous people are still around. They are not bygone people of history! History likes to act like they are ancient, mysterious, and extinct. The Seneca Nation still has a strong presence in the area, so it is possible that stories of council rock still exis within their traditions and oral histories. There was a massacre known as the Devil's Hole massacre that occurred on September 14, 1763 during the 7 Year's War, also known as the French & Indian War. A supply train of 350 British soldiers that were making their way from Fort Niagara to Fort Schlosser stopped to rest for dinner on a large flat rock near Devil's Hole. While enjoying their supper they were attacked by a group of Senecas. There was a massive loss of life, and those not killed directly by the ambush jumped off the precipice to have a chance at survival. But those that did so, if they survived the steep jump, did not survive much longer as the Senecas sent the wagons, baggage, and horses of the supply chain off the edge, crushing and killing those that remained. There were only two survivors. Sadly, modern day Devil's Hole cave bears no resemblance to what it once was. It is covered in graffiti and often littered with trash as it has become a favourite place for wayward teenagers to party. There is a large cave at the bottom of the gorge that many people think is Devil's Hole cave…but it's not. In fact there are many caves in the area, some of which aren't true caves but just massive boulders that have fallen on top of one another. To find the real Devil's Hole cave you have to make your way partially down the gorge precipice and veer off to a path that backtracks partially back up the cliff. The cave is made up of DeCew Dolostone, a fine crystalline dolostone that is dark grey in color. The cave's entrance is 10 feet wide and 8 feet high. The initial passage of the cave is at a gentle incline, and after making your way about 12 feet into the cave the ceiling is only 4 feet high. However, if you continue onward the ceiling will reach a height of 9 feet. At this point one will find a manmade wall, beyond which there is a drop in floor level of about three feet. Beyond the wall the 6 foot tall passage continues at a very narrow width of 6 inches. It continues for about 10 feet before veering off to the east where you lose sight of its path. There was once a mineral spring in the cave but it seems to have since dried up, much like the now defunct stream known as Bloody Run. And that's the short and long on Devil's Hole! Not demonic, but definitely a hole. What? Chile, anyway. Now, back to the city of Niagara Falls. There are so many actual haunted locations in Niagara Falls which you may have seen on television like the Red Coach Inn that I could cover another time if you'd like – just let me know! But I do need to set the record straight on Goat and the Three Sisters Islands. Especially with the bridal veil falls my fake conspiracy makes so much sense, but no, the Three Sister Islands did not get their name from the three brides of Satan. Instead, they are named after the daughters of General Parkhurst Whitney: Celinda, Angelina, and Asenath Whitney. Although…that does sound demonic. Asenath Metrione Zinthos? Azarath Metrione Zinthos? No? Okay, I need to bury that one just like the three sisters are in the famous Oakwood Cemetery. Well, maybe infamous as it is the only place in the world where individuals are interred using a unique form of corpse preservation known as cementation. Essentially bodies were encased in cement for years, and the “watery portions” of the body would be absorbed, leaving behind a well preserved body along with a perfect cast of the original corpse. The story behind this is fascinating and the inventor (and I'm not joking here), Judge Theodore Graves Hulett was quite the kook. But I digress! Offerings were presented at this island by the Iroquois, that is true. But no sacrifice or anything sinister was involved. More along the lines of gifts and presents. Goat Island! Not demonic, though a part of H.G. Well's 1908 novel The War in the Air is set on Goat Island. During the novel the United States is iinvaded by Imperial Germany and the protagonist is left stranded on the island with two German soldiers and must fight for survival. Exciting stuff…but sadly, the origin of its name is much less exciting. Goat Island is named such because John Stedman, who was an earlier pioneer, kept a heard of goats on the island. SO…yeah…very descriptive, very literal. The island officially obtained the name in 1780 when he returned after a terrible winter to find all but one of his goats dead. And if you know anything about Western New York winters…wow. I…yeah. Niagara Falls can literally freeze in place, that's how cold it can get. Other than the fact there is a very cool Nikola Tesla monument on the island gifted by the government of Yugoslavia, it's rather unremarkable. I do have rather flamboyant picture of myself in Daddy Tesla's lap, as I call him, from a few years ago when I scaled the statue. Shh. It didn't happen. I'll slap it up on the gram for you to see.

The podcast focuses on the geographic triangle stretching from the St.Lawrence to Lake Onatario and down to New York Harbor.
The most interesting fact about the American Revolution, which makes it unique in the annals of all our wars, is that it was the unintended consequence of a dispute about the law. Two principle arguments emerged on both sides of the Atlantic and it was the failure to reconcile these competing views of the law that led to open warfare in 1775, and the decision in 1776 of 13 of the British colonies to declare their independence. In episode eleven we will examine the legal arguments on both sides, the role of the French & Indian War as a prime mover in the dispute, the Royal Proclamation of 1763, the Stamp Act, important court cases and more.

Details the beginnings of US Constitution, effects of French & Indian War, lead up to Revolution key battles.
Also known as the Seven Years War, tracks the effect on the relationship between the British and its American colonies both during and after the war.
First things first! Magua is the GOAT. Wes Studi should've been nominated for an Oscar, he was snubbed! The Last of the Mohicans (1992) based on the novel by James Finnemoore Cooper. This is the ninth time that Hollywood made this 1826 book into a movie. This romance tale that occurs during the French-Indian War depicts where the Mohicans and Huron fell into this war at this time. Daniel Day Lewis plays Hawkeye, a white man who was adopted as a child to the last living Mohicans, Chingachgook (Russell Means) and his son Uncas (Eric Schweig). The trio of Mohicans come across revenge seeking Magua as he hopes to avenge the death of his family, who were killed at the hands of General Munro. Magua seeks to kill General Munro's children, Alice and Cora Munro. This story unfolds with Hawkeye falling in love with one of the women who Magua seeks to kill, Cora. Hawkeye and Cora fight for their love and survival! This action packed movie, depicts an epic tale that shows Natives speaking multiple languages, a LOT of natives, no Redface, no white savior (I'll discuss it), and feature one of the best soundtracks to ever grace this planet. This week I am talking about the French and Indian war - a conflict seen as one of the catalysts for the American Revolution a few years later. This conflict over desired land expansion would lead to Great Britain's increase in territory, but see the beginnings of Britain's loss of colonial support. Also - did you know the French Indian War is known by many different names? Grab your coffee and enjoy. In the 1760's, at the end of the French Indian War, the provenance of Brattleboro was in question. Land in this area had been granted by the Dutch of Albany, some by the French, and some by the Colonies of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and New York. Here's the story by Lewis Grout, written in the 1890's...

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we travel back in time and look at the life, loves, war, revolution, presidency and death of George Washington. Born to a middle class family, he rose in wealth and power, until by age 20, he was the wealthiest land owner in Virginia. His story is incredible. He joined the British to stop the French from spreading onto their land. His first fight there basically started a world war because he didn’t know what he was doing. This man was a passionate farmer and whiskey distiller, but he kept getting the call to serve his nation, as a warrior, a spymaster, a politician, and ultimately president. The Washington family had been in American for three generations before George was born. His parents were of an upper middle class and bought some land, which eventually became his famous home at Mt. Vernon. His father increased his fortune, died, left it all to George’s older brother Lawrence. Then Lawrence built up more fortune, died of tuberculosis, and left it all to George. He was the wealthiest man in the colony. But he didn’t sit around counting his gold. Instead, Washington learned how to work the farm and survive in the woods. He worked with the laborers and slaves, it is said, instead of sitting in the big house. He eventually joined a dangerous surveying party and came back as the official surveyor of the surrounding area. That involvement with government made him the selection to talk to some French who had encroached on “British” territory. He did; they politely said they wouldn’t leave. Washington came back with a small military force and attacked and killed the commander, basically kicking off an war between the British and the French. His time in the French Indian War gave him experience on the battlefield. Eventually, the war ended, and he returned to his farming life at Mt. Vernon. However, the Brits were gouging the colonists to make up for the money they spent in the war. Tax after tax led to things like the Boston Tea Party, and eventually, everyone wanted an end to British Rule. The revolution had begun. Again, though he didn’t want it, Washington’s experience, wealth, and prestige, landed him the top military role in the war. Here, he suffered major victories and massive losses. He endured harsh winters, did some legendary tactics, and even survived one battle with four bullet holes in his cloak and two dead horses underneath him. Eventually, the war was won, and Washington settled down once again. And once again, duty called. The new nation of states was falling apart, many of them enacting taxes tougher than the Brits did in order to pay back the war debts. So, the founding fathers called the Constitutional Congress, rewrote the constitution, and called upon George Washington to be the first president. His time in that office set the precedence for the president. He wasn’t a king but an official. So, how long did he last as president? Did he really have wooden teeth? What was up with him and slaves? Did he have a secret lover on the side? Did he really chop down that cherry tree? Listen, laugh, learn. This episode I speak to Mr Lon Weiss of Brigade Games. Brigade games offer a wide variety of minis both from their own commissioned ranges to other notable companies in one place. There is a heavy focus on the Black Powder era and they have a current kickstarter campaign to fund a French Indian War range of models sculpted by the talented Mr Paul Hick’s who PATM are fortunate to count as a friend of the show. The current KS does end on June 7 2020, which is 2 days from the release date but as with all the shows I dont consider them to be timestamped by the content or just a sales platform. Lon and I have a wide ranging chat from his regular day job, into how Brigade Games came into being with brief forays into other areas. It was a pleasure to talk to Lon and he comes across as a highly experienced person in the hobby industry, it was fun picking his brain for an hour and a bit, I hope you enjoy the show. Written and researched by Rachael Wilson Transcript: The landscape of rural northwestern Pennsylvania is quite the beautiful place. There are rolling hills, stretching fields full of crops and wildflowers, and the historic French Creek rolls throughout Mercer, Erie and Crawford counties of Pennsylvania. For almost two thousand years, the Iroquois people lived in western New York and Pennsylvania, as well as southern Ontario and Quebec. They stayed within the areas of the Great Lakes, specifically lakes Ontario, Huron, and Erie and lived utilizing the land.[1] Those who lived in what is what is modernly known as Waterford, Pennsylvania – about twenty minutes south of Erie – relied on the resources in and around the French Creek watershed, including the nearby Lake LeBoeuf. The Iroquois knew how to take advantage of the landscape that they had been given. The Pennsylvania woods were too thick to hunt and grow food, so they were able to create spanning meadows to grow food and hunt the game of the area.[2] In the mid-1700s, settlers from England began to come to the New World and settle in the area. The French followed right behind. Both British and French forces began to build forts like Fort Duquesne, Presque Isle, and Venango. Tensions began to build between the two nations in their colonies. Fort de la Rivière au Bœuf, Fort LeBoeuf as it is commonly referred to as now, was second out of four forts that was operated by the French forces who had come to Western Pennsylvania. The fort sat on the bank of LeBoeuf Creek, after which the fort was named. Along with Forts Presque Isle, Machault, and Duquesne, these forts built the line of French bases across western Pennsylvania. Presque Isle was built along the banks of Lake Erie in Pennsylvania, Machault in modern day Franklin, Pennsylvania, and Fort Duquesne in what is now Pittsburgh. These forts, LeBoeuf in particular, was used to trade throughout French territory from Fort Presque Isle and Canada and to protect Presque Isle from any sort of raid.[3] Great Britain did not that all too much. As a result, in 1753, Governor Robert Dinwiddie assigned 21-year old major George Washington – yes, that George Washington – on a mission up to the forts to demand that the French leave the territory ASAP because the British had claimed it. As marked by the journal that Washington had written throughout his trek up north, the journey took him about ten weeks and one thousand miles “by horse, foot, canoe, and raft.”[4] Young Major Washington left Williamsburg on October 31st of 1753 and was accompanied by a team made up of a surveyor, a French translator, four traders, and eventually met up with various members of native tribes, including a man referred to as the “Half-King.” George’s journal details every single thing he did and saw on his journey. His training as a surveyor came quite in handy when it came to writing his observations down. Once they reached Logtown, a town in what is currently Beaver County, Pennsylvania, northeast of Pittsburgh, they were directed towards Fort LeBoeuf, about 110 miles north. With Washington was a letter a for Jacques Legardeur de Saint-Pierre, a French military commander who was the man in charge at Fort LeBoeuf.[5] The letter was the ultimatum posed towards the French from the British. While Washington was generally received pretty well by those who were in Waterford, Legardeur de Saint-Pierre was not a big fan of the message that George brought him. The French king thought that the letter from Dinwiddie and England was ridiculous and his claim to the area was “incontestable.”[6] At the same time as Washington’s trek to the French forts, the French and the natives begin to engage in trade in an unprecedented change in way of life for the natives. Their survival began to depend on it. Frenchmen learned to fight the “Indian Way,” engaging in guerilla warfare, “which was by stealth, surprise, ambush, and frightening terror.”[7] This greatly helped the French as tensions between the British were beginning to come to the surface. When the Seven Years War began in 1756, their new way of fighting was key to their survival while British soldiers were killed, tortured, disfigured, or scalped by the natives. Six years into the war, in 1759, the French were defeated by the British, at least in the colonies and North America as a whole. Forts Duquesne, Machault, LeBoeuf, and Presque Isle were all burned to the ground. The next year, the forts were rebuilt, and named Pitt, Venango, LeBoeuf, and Presque Isle, respectively. Pitt, formerly Duquesne, was built to be a strong fortress and Presque Isle was also built to be tough. But LeBoeuf and Venango? Not so much. In 1766, General Jeffery Amherst called for an attack on all British garrisons in order to ensure that the Natives would stop getting any more of the European guns and weapons that had receiving in trade. This attack backfired on the British, causing the causalities of 450 British soldiers and citizens, with little to damage for the Natives. After the final fort was demolished, the Judson family built their house and settled on what is believed to be the placement of the original fort. Patriarch Amos was a powerful man in Waterford, working odd jobs until he opened his store in 1823. Judson also was the owner of the Eagle Hotel, which sat across the street from his house.[8] While the fort has not been standing for hundreds of years, Waterford’s Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society is very active in making sure that the area knows about its rich history and the people behind it all. The buildings in the district covered by the historical society display buildings ranging from the time of Judson up until the cusp of World War II.[9] The Judson house still stands, as does the store that he ran until his death. The Eagle Hotel still operates as well, but no one stays here anymore. Nowadays it’s a restaurant that serves Amish style food throughout the summer and autumn months. Part of the land originally taken up by the fort is covered by the post office, but some of that space is dedicated to a museum that displays Waterford’s part in the Seven Years War on the front of the New World. Waterford looks like a sleepy town, but the locals are proud of our crown jewel: our statue on the outskirts of historic downtown. In 1922, locals in Waterford commissioned a statue of our nation’s first president in a way that no other. After a hefty price of $13,000, a statue of George Washington was placed in what would come to be known as Washington Park. George was quickly used as a part of the culture of Waterford with students from the local high school dressing him as a prank. The local members of the Daughters of the American Revolution had set aside parts of land, some structures were restored, and the statue was placed on that property. This statue, the only statue of President Washington as a young man, proudly stands in Waterford in the spot where it was moved by the Pennsylvania Historical Commission in 1945. Our series is picking up steam as we jump to the years immediately prior to the Shot Heard ‘Round the World. James and Scott discuss the interregnum between the French-Indian War and the Revolutionary War, the Sugar Act (1764), the Stamp Act (1765), then Townsend Acts (1767), the Boston Massacre (1770), the Tea Act (1773), and the Coercive Acts (1774).
Episode 2 features the real war story of 17 year old Thomas Brown, one of America's first Army Rangers, in his harrowing and gruesome ordeal during the French and Indian War. He was a young ranger with Major Robert Roger's Rangers, the forbearer of today's Army Rangers. He tells in his own words, circa 1760, how he was involved in an epic and brutal firefight while wearing snowshoes in the middle of upstate New York's frontier wilderness, only to be captured and taken captive. He witnessed some awful things, and eventually escaped, only to be captured again. On this episode of Battles & Banter, things get crazy! First of all, Avery, Codie & Tony are joined by the one and only Rich Condon of "Civil War Pittsburgh" and "Pennsylvania in the Civil War" to talk about the Battle of Fort Necessity. Not only known for being the first major battle with George Washington in command, Fort Necessity was also the beginning of the first large-scale world war: The Seven Years War, or more locally known as the French & Indian War. Just a disclaimer that this episode will sound a little different because Audacity sucks sometimes and audio issues hit hard. Hence, the entire episode is shot from Rich's perspective, who single handedly saved the podcast from annihilation. It was still a good time and hope you all enjoy the ride. If you don't, sorry not sorry. Cheers!

This month's episode brings my French & Indian War topic to a close. As always, it's been very rewarding to dig a bit deeper into a piece of history I thought I knew something about...only to find more layers and connections to the past & present. Even though my time living in Paris is six months behind me, I knew that picking this topic would be a great transition from my somewhat deliberate French-focused outlook of 2016-2017 into the broader world again. That's exactly how it worked. In learning about the F&I War, I chose to focus on the New France part of that story, particular the two centuries of history that came before the Fall of Quebec. I guess you could say I was focusing the "F" in the F&I War. I only scratched the surface of the "I" part. Not surprisingly, the political and cultural history of the native peoples in this region--and their ever-adapting interaction with the arriving Europeans--is a topic all unto itself. Frankly, that's the sort of story that can sometimes be told better by a sophisticated euro, since it involves so much more than military subjects. As far as I know, there isn't a game on that topic, though Mound Builders may be the closest. I own that, and look forward to playing it sometime. The Victory of Montcalm's Troops at Carillon by Henry Alexander Ogden (images from Wikipedia) As for the military history, though, there are many good games on the topic. Typically, I played only a fraction of what I considered when I constructed this episode's geeklist. That's ok--I enjoyed the ones I got to, and will have future opportunities to play some that I missed. (I still wish there was a playably short version of the Battle of Quiberon Bay, though.) The Battle of Quiberon Bay, 20 November 1759 by Dominic Serres (images from Wikipedia) A feature of this episode is my interview with designer Martin Wallace. Probably best known for Age of Steam, Brass, and London, you can tell right there that he's not your average eurogame designer. He's his own thing. Martin's games have always had a heavy dose of history, often political and economic history. It should be no surprise that his designer's eye looks over topics of military history, too. He's now designed a fair number of wargames, all of them innovative and worth a look. His designs don't come from a hex & counter system, a COIN system, or indeed any established system at all. A few of them share common rule systems, but most are unique. Though it's a problematic term (because no one knows exactly what it means), they are often euro-wargame hybrids. Which is right up my alley. When Martin's A Few Acres of Snow was released in 2011, it took a new game design mechanism called deckbuilding and applied to a very specific subject, the French & Indian War. For me, it was love at first sight, and I've never looked back. What a thrill to be able to talk to Martin about it, as well as his general thoughts about wargaming. Sculptures of James Wolfe and Marquis de Montcalm by Louis-Philippe Hébert in front of Parliament Building (Quebec) (images from Wikipedia) Since this is the final episode in the series, I wrap up by talking about the F&I War games I actually played, books, podcasts, and movies. Then it's time to move on to the subject for the next quarter, and planned three monthly episodes: the Korean War. -Mark Movies • Last of the Mohicans (1992) • Last of the Mohicans (1920) silent • Northwest Passage more about Robert's Rangers than the passage Books • George Washington: The Forge of Experience, 1732-1775, by James Thomas Flexner • THE CHRONICLES OF CANADA: Volume II - The Rise of New France, edited by George M. Two months in and I'm really liking this new schedule of a quarter per topic. Those 90 days feel like enough time to dig into a subject, but also to keep moving so that I get to explore several throughout the year. I'll stick with this for the foreseeable future, and in this episode I share what some of my future topics will likely be. Plan of Fort Carillon in 1758 The main feature of this episode is another interview with designer Volko Ruhnke. I say "another" because he was on my podcast a year ago to talk about Alesia, while this time he's on to talk about the French & Indian War. Though he's probably best known now as the originator of the COIN system, Volko's first published design was a CDG, Wilderness War. We get to talk about that, as well as an entirely new game system he's working on. I don't know if this is a "scoop" or what because I had not heard of this before, and cannot find anything else about it online. Enjoy! Volko tells about this new system in the context of describing the time he had playtesting games at San Diego's wargaming convention, SDHistCon. I missed going this year...maybe I should make it a priority in 2018? Wargaming at BGG.con One of the reasons I didn't make it was that I went to another gaming convention in November, Boardgamegeek's BGGcon. This was my fourth time, having been to the very first (2005), and then three of the past few years (just missed when I lived in France--2016). Although primarily a eurogame event, I'd say perhaps 10% of the gaming is wargaming. Since BGGcon is such a large event (2500+ people over 4+ days), even 10% is quite a bit of wargaming. I did some of that this time, too. A plan of Fort William Henry, published in 1765 I've got one more designer interview planned for the final F&I War episode, next month in December. At that time I'll also recap the games & movies I've enjoyed. Then we'll put a bow on 2017 and look forward to the new year. -Mark Fort Oswego Remember to follow along & chime in on my geeklist/discussion) for all of my French & Indian War explorations. In the final quarter of 2017 I'm concentrating on the French & Indian War. This first episode is an introduction, giving me a chance to take my listeners along for this ride in history. Perhaps you'll jump onboard and experience some of these games or movies with me. Hand-drawn map by George Washington, accompanying a printing of the journal he kept of his 1753 expedition into the Ohio Country. I realize that what I'm calling the French & Indian War is really the North American theater of the Seven Years War (sometimes nicknamed World War Zero), when France and England battled for global dominance throughout the newly expanding colonial world. There were conflicts in mainland Europe, too. I'm not exploring those--I'm just looking at the conflicts of Quebec, Fort William Henry, the forks of the Ohio, the siege of Louisbourg, and so on. However, my reading about the French & Indian WAR (singular) has quickly reminded me that this conflict from 1754-1763 was preceded by a few other wars between roughly the same sides: English colonies versus the French & Indian-allied forces. I have a suspicion I'll be looking into those, too. One thing that jumped out at me when I created this subject's geeklist is how many good light/short/hybrid wargames there are on it. From Quebec 1759 (Columbia's first block wargame in 1972!) to A Few Acres of Snow or 1754 Conquest (published in 2011 & 2017, respectively), there are a bunch of great choices for wargamers like me that prefer the lighter end of our hobby. I'm still curious about larger hexmap wargames, and the famous CDG on this topic, too. Map of Louisbourg and its artillery batteries in 1751. In the podcast I get to talk about the games I saw & played at the recent GMT Weekend at the Warehouse event, too. This is practically in my back yard (a 3-hour drive), so I hope to continue to go to this event once or twice per year. Next month I'll also be going to BGGcon in Dallas, where I'll be playing both wargames and euros. Hope to see you there! Say hi and ask for a podcast button to display proudly! -Mark This 1797 engraving is based on a sketch made by Hervey Smyth, General Wolfe's aide-de-camp during the siege of Quebec. It's been an interesting couple months, delving into the Franco-Prussian War, including the events the led to it, and the after effects. It definitely feels like a historical pivot that transformed the Europe of Napoleon's time into the European political landscape that we still know today...and one that had such tragedy awaiting it in the 20th century. However, it wasn't a World War. It wasn't even a war that engulfed most of Europe as the Napoleonic ones had. This was contained, with neutrality and borders respected. I have the pleasure to interview Charles Vasey again for this episode. He designed a game about one of the war's most famous battles--but one that's tricky to treat with traditional wargame design & play thinking. Although now it's easy to find his game in issue #24 of Against The Odds magazine, in the 1990s it was a DTP/PNP title, back when those took more work to find, acquire, and enjoy. Before its time! It was a great opportunity to speak with Charles about his game, and more generally about innovation in wargame design. As usual, my ambitions to play many games on a topic exceeded my available time. That's ok. Some I played all the way through, others I set up and studied the rules, and some others I merely purchased (or already had)! I remind myself that this is my hobby, not my job. While it would be fun to keep exploring this topic, there are so many wargaming subjects I've yet to explore that I have to move on. Charles mentioned that there didn't used to be very much literature about the FP War in the English language, but this has changed in the past twenty years. That has enabled a flowering of good games on the subject, too. As for the film, though, the pickings are still slim. On the other hand, that obscurity led me to find different films & formats that were interesting discoveries in themselves. I think you'll hear in this episode how I'm coming to embrace the fact that the games themselves are a jumping-off point for me for a topic. It was where I started, and the hobby remains the core of my historical interest. However, as I've gotten back into wargaming for the past several years, I'm realizing that I'm energized by learning and thinking about these topics for a few months, exploring them through various "media" (wargames, movies), considering their impact on world history, and then moving on to another subject. Very rewarding. -Mark P.S. The first weekend in October I'll be at GMT's Weekend at the Warehouse event in Hanford, California. Later in November I'm returning to BGGcon in Dallas, Texas. If any listeners go to either of these events, too, please track me down and let me know. I'd love to hear what you think. (I may be part of a podcaster panel discussion at BGGcon, too. Details are still being worked out.) I'll have buttons/badges for both of my podcasts that you can pin to your shirt, game bag, or whatever. Albort starts this first of two episodes with a half-hour long crash course introduction to Jerome, Joseph and Napoleon Bonaparte and their hand in giving us the tin can before illustrating how the French Indian War, The Rosetta Stone, The War of 1812, Thomas Jefferson, The Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, The Seminole Wars, Theatre Riots, The Pony Express, Oklahoma, John Deere, Scalawags and Carpet Baggers gave us the invention of barbed wire. Don’t get fooled by the late theme song, this is our longest episode yet.

Welsome to Episode 88 of the Meeples & Miniatures Podcast In this show, I am joined by guests Rich Jones & Mike Hobbs as we discuss Muskets & Tomahawks, the skirmish game set in the French Indian War, written by Alex Buchel and published by Studio Tomahawk I hope you enjoy the show
This show has a distinctly wargaming flavour to it, as I concentrate on wargaming rules reviews and chatting about miniatures. In particular, I'm looking at skirmish gaming in large scale – 40mm to be exact – and specifically gaming in the late 18th and early 19th Century, incorporating the American War of Independence, the French Indian War and the Napoleonic War. I review the rules Black Powder Battles in depth, plus I look at some other, free (or at least very cheap), skirmish rules that you may want to consider for this period. Finally, I look at the broad range of 40mm figures that are available, whether it be Napoleonics from the likes of Sash & Saber or Perry Miniatures, French Indian War from HLBS or American War of Independence from Front Rank Figurines, to name but a few.
