Here's wishing all United States military veterans in the audience a happy Veterans Day with this edition of Overdrive Radio. To mark the day, we bring you this dive into the work of the Farmer Veteran Coalition, an organization that got its start back in 2009 with a goal of a then California/Mexico produce farmer to help support returning military servicemembers in bids to enter the business of feeding the nation. We'll hear today Overdrive Radio's talk with Jeanette Lombardo, current Farmer Veteran Coalition CEO, about the FVC's recent induction into the Howes company's Hall of Fame, bringing another important support organization to the attention of trucking and ag industries: https://www.overdriveonline.com/life/article/15705903/vetssupport-group-now-in-howes-hall-of-fame-deadline-approaching-for-small-biz-reporting-to-fincen-alert FVC CEO Lombardo details a variety of new-farmer support and other programs that deliver on the org's mission, dovetailing in several ways with trucking and logistics businesses that support the nation's food supply chain. Lombardo sees plenty honor and value in the Howes Hall of Fame induction, enabling connections between the coalition and, not just new groups and people in the ag world, but also in trucking and logistics. "We're a nonprofit. We don't have much budget for advertising, ... yet we're seeing this huge increase in membership," she said, in part given word of mouth that occurs as a result of programs like the Howes Hall of Fame. "We were very humbled to receive the nod from Howes, and even more so when we went online to see previous awardees. ... I think it's the beginning of a wonderful partnership." The Hall of Fame launched during Howes' 100-year anniversary celebration five years back, said Howes Products' own Rich Guida. It's intended as an effort "to find the people, places, and things that make trucking and farming -- and diesel systems, really, of any kind -- so valuable. And for us to be able to give back to these people, and support them the way Jeanette was talking about, is where we find reward." Access the stories of all inductees in the Howes Hall of Fame, or nominate an organization or individual yourself, at this link: https://howesproducts.com/hof In the podcast, find much more detail about the FVC's many support programs for returning servicemembers and hear Lombardo's personal story of how, in the midst of the pandemic, she would come to be inspired by and, then, intimately involved in leading an organization with a worthy mission. Our guest on this episode, Jeff Jeffers, could pinpoint the exact moment he knew farming was the career for him following military service. It came after a retreat with the Farmer Veteran Coalition and in the car ride home, Jeff looked over at this soon-to-be co-founder, Steve, and said, “We're gonna be freakin' farmers”. James “Jeff” Jeffers is the co-founder of a non-profit based in Dallas, TX called F.A.R.M. – Farmers Assisting Returning Military. Jeff and the team at FARM are dedicated to providing military veterans with internships, educational opportunities, and hands-in-the-dirt experience through a variety of agricultural settings. Jeff grew up outside Indianapolis playing in the woods and eventually falling in love with the outdoors through hunting and fishing. After high school and a brief stint working in Florida, he fell victim to one of the Army's 1990s “Be All You Can Be” television advertisements and literally signed up the next day. This began a multi-year, multi-deployment experience in the US Army infantry starting before 9/11 and encompassing several deployments to Iraqi during the height of the fighting. After several close calls with enemy grenades and a car bomb, Jeff was medically retired with a traumatic brain injury and began the uncertain journey of building a life outside the Army. This episode is all about that journey and Jeff's passion today for helping veterans in agriculture. He provides some of the most practical and down-to-earth advice for military veterans looking to get involved in ag I've ever heard. If you're interested in getting started in farming after the miliary, then this episode is a must listen!

Coming out of the Army, where her unique combo skill set was in high demand, Dr. Michele Pfannenstiel had a mountain to climb. The CEO of Dirigo Food Safety knew her veterinary training and regulatory expertise were valuable commodities, but her target market was reluctant, and growth was slow. The gamechanger? Hiring a life coach. Suddenly Michele had the perfect complement to her core consulting competencies – a set of tools to transform the mindsets of the prospects and clients who needed her help. On this episode of She Turned Entrepreneur, Michele shares the story of how she won over resistant dairy and produce farmers, ranchers and artisanal food producers with a two-pronged approach to understanding and ultimately meeting regulatory standards. It was at first a tough sell, but by keeping focused on each next profit-generating step, Michele developed a highly successful program. Her Food Safety University provides an all-in-one platform featuring resources for creating compliance plans, training and documentation. And by bringing in the coaching element, Michele helps her clients integrate food safety as a habit, not an afterthought. Michele's business plan revolves around being constantly aware of her key indicators, whether lagging or leading. Learn how she uses self-coaching techniques to keep things flowing in the right direction. Michele also shares with us a series of concrete steps to take if your venture is stuck in first gear. Get ready to take notes as this triple-threat entrepreneur downloads all kinds of wisdom and … ahem … food for thought. Cut them loose! · Michele's business turned a corner when she sought out life coaching. · Your No. 1 asset is your brain, so keep close tabs on how well it's functioning.· The faster you make decisions, the more money you will make.· Always be looking for your next best profit-making step.· Every piece of marketing content you generate should include an ask Here's a quick look into the episode:· Michele shares her unusual career path from a veterinary degree to serving in the Army, where she specialized in food inspection. · A personal interest in feeding her family from farm-to-table sources spurred Michele's interaction with farmers “flummoxed” by food safety regulations. Before she knew it, she was organically growing a business designing tailored regulatory plans.· A boot camp for veterans turbocharged Michele's transition to entrepreneurism.· The biggest barrier to Michele's business was the initial resistance farmers had to regulatory laws that do nothing for the bottom line. It wasn't lucrative to spend time educating them to the necessity, but that was the first hurdle she had to clear. · When she integrated coaching into her consulting business, food manufacturers were able not only to deploy a food safety plan but also make the mindset adjustments necessary to maintaining a robust program long-term.· Advice for entrepreneurs who want to make a quantum leap:o Ask yourself: What's the next most profit-generating step I can create?o Don't wait for confidence or motivation. Just get going!o Stop assuming that you have to feel good to perform profit-making actions!o Identify your leading and lagging indicators. They reveal how well your brain is working and whether you're positioned to make the next right decision.§ Lagging Indicators: Bank accounts and sales figures.§ Leading Indicators: Commitment to journaling and creating awareness about thoughts, feelings, nervous system responses and how the universe is supporting your mission. All four elements must be in balance.o The way out of being stuck is making decisions. The faster you make them, the more money you will make. o Don't bog down trying to perfect collateral or other non-profit-generating tasks. And if you're generating content, make sure to always include an ask!About Michele:Known by many as Dr. P., Michele earned her BA from Wellesley College and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. She served as a veterinarian in the US Army Veterinary Corps serving at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, and the US Military Academy at West Point. After fulfilling her active duty commitment, Michele settled with her family in Southern Maine. In addition to her work with Farmer Veteran Coalition, since 2012 Michele has been the principal at Dirigo Food Safety, a consulting business that helps small farms and food producers navigate food safety and implement systems that can help them grow their businesses. If you are a veteran farmer, you might want to apply for the Farmer Veteran Coalition's Fellowship Fund. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, February 14.

Ag on Tap with Sabrina and Rusty Halvorson

In this episode, Sabrina chats with Rachel Petitt, program director with the Farmer Veteran Coalition about the Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund . From the FVC:As the clock ticked toward midnight and 2021 was in our rearview mirror, the team at Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) took a moment to reflect on their proudest moments of last year. One of those moments was the farm equipment FVC awarded to 138 farmer veterans through their Fellowship Fund small grant program. They proudly thought about the 2021 class of awardees. The stories and impact the program had on this very diverse collection of members is inspiring. Executive Director Jeanette Lombardo states “As FVC starts this next round of funding, the stories of 2021 are a wonderful reminder of the importance of our mission. These stories drive our efforts everyday as we seek new funding and create programs to help our Farmer Veterans throughout the country.”Now in its 11th year, the Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund has granted over $3.5 million in support of 800+ military veterans pursuing careers in agriculture. As one of FVC's core programs, it helps beginning farmers and ranchers with what's often their greatest hurdle – access to start-up capital.Last year that came in the form of hot ticket items like greenhouses and grow tents, walk-in coolers and cold storage units, milking systems, water filtrations, and honey extractors. Some of the more unique requests included a mushroom substrate steamer and a copper still. With the arrival of spring, 138 deserving members of the nationwide nonprofit organization welcomed the thrilling news that their equipment request had been granted and would soon be delivered to their farm. Many have already found improved efficiency in their business as a result. “It was taking me four hours to fill up my 1,100-gallon leg tank and now with my Generac pump I can fill the tank in about 15 minutes,” says David Volkman, an Army veteran who served for nearly three decades before starting Ohio Valley Hops. Now with the calendar turned to 2022, FVC excitedly welcomes the arrival of their next funding cycle.“Our sights are set high for 2022: we anticipate raising $500,000 to give out to this year's class of Fellows,” beams Rachel Petitt, the program director. “We recognize this is a lofty goal, but we are really close so it definitely feels achievable.”The application opened Jan 3rd and remains available through February 14th.To apply visit: https://farmvetco.org/fvfellowship.Funding for the 2022 cycle is made possible by Wounded Warriors Project, Kubota, Tractor Supply Company, Homestead Implements, Tarter Farm and Ranch Equipment, Vital Farms, Sugar Bottom Farm, Barreras Family Farm and Northwest Farm Credit Services.

There are two great Will Allens in organic agriculture. One is a 6'7” former professional basketball player and founder of Growing Power in Milwaukee, the renowned urban agriculture training center. The other Will Allen is an organic farming pioneer and activist who started out as a professor at UC Santa Barbara, but was fired and jailed for his anti-Vietnam war activism. No longer able to work in academia, he took up farming following in his father's footsteps. Will's zeal for justice and reform was transferred to agriculture. He founded the Sustainable Cotton Project (SCP) in 1990, which helped farmers transition to organic while reducing farmworker exposure to pesticides. SCP created markets for organic cotton selling to major manufacturers like Patagonia, Esprit, Levis, Marks and Spencer, and Nike. Understanding that war creates more victims than heroes, Will became a founding member of Farms Not Arms (now the Farmer Veteran Coalition), which helps veterans heal from the trauma of war by training them for jobs in agriculture. Will moved from California to Vermont to farm and became active in the Vermont GMO labeling law campaign. He farms with his wife Kate Duesterberg on 40 acres, producing a diversity of vegetables and fruits, grains, oil sunflower, dry beans, and ornamental and cut flowers. The farm has a certified kitchen producing organic products, and an organic coffee shop. The Cedar Circle Farm educational program hosts over a thousand school kids each year. I sat down with Will at the 2016 Eco Farm Conference to talk about his work with Regeneration Vermont that promotes climate-friendly agriculture, social justice for farmworkers, stewardship of the natural environment and the production of healthy food. At the age of 80, Will is still a vital and transformative force, steadily pushing the food system to be more accountable, more in tune with nature and to be in service of human and ecosystem health. If you've never had pasture raised beef and pork just do it. You won't believe the taste. If you love bacon....you'll hit the Fort Knox of flavor. It's out-of-control delicious.   Tricia Park, her husband (both military veterans), and son run Creekside Meadows Farm, a small farm in upstate New York. Started 20+ years ago it has been a learning experience for all of them. On the arrival of their first small heard of cattle she said, "It has to be profitable or it we don't do it." Listening to her it sounds like they figured it out with some help along the way and a lot of perseverance.    Tricia tells us about her farm and its offerings as a CSA and how the farm grew and became a viable business allowing them to do what they love and have a life as well. Make no mistake about it, Tricia made sure the financial and business ends were in place for the farm while her husband and son managed multiple farm operations....and I've seen her in the fields as well. It should come as no surprise the farm is run well as both Tricia and Matt are military veterans. They know how to get things done...and they are always smiling. I think they like what they do.   Tricia shared some resources for Military Vets and women who wish to farm.    "Farm-ops" is the veteran focused part of Cornell Small Farms.  Dean Koyanagi is the head and veterans interested in farming can look them up at: smallfarms.cornell.edu/projects/farm-ops/   If you are a veteran and looking for help starting a farm visit Farmer Veteran Coalition.  www.farmvetco.org   Tricia's main farm business training came from www.holisticmanagement.org The program was Whole farm planning for Beginning Women farmers.  Visit Creekside Meadows, an all pasture raised farm, at Creekside Meadows Farm, and on Facebook and Instagram.  Support Clean Slate Farm by shopping Amazon through our affiliate page. There are few others for understanding order and efficiency better than our veterans. Today's guest is no exception. Terrell Spencer "Spence" of Across the Creek Farm in West Fork, Arkansas has a great many things to say about what it takes to be a truly sustainable farmer. "The real sustainable farmer is a profitable farmer." Profit does not have to come at a sacrifice to the quality of your plants or animals. Rather it comes as a product of good planning and better record keeping. Spence has really been able to drill down into exactly what his net profit is per chicken, and that is helping him work toward his goal of financial success. While the concentration of this discussion if that of finances and record keeping I think it is important to take stock of what I chose that topic. I did not get into farming to make money, but I do see it as a necessity to keep farming. First and foremost in my life come my new daughter Mabel and my wife Kate. The most important duty I can serve is to be a good provider for them not only in bringing home the bacon, but making sure that bacon was raised in a healthy manner, haha. Hooray farm metaphors! I farm because I love it, and I love my family. I focus my efforts on financial stability because I want to keep farming and I want to support my family. That is definitely something Spence and I have in common. During the interview Spence shares with me his strategy for growing his farm as well as more information on a great organization connecting veterans with agricultural resources called the Farmer Veteran Coalition. Mike speaks with Arkansas producer Terrell Spencer, aka Spence, about farming, military, and life.Everyone has a story and in this episode, Spence shares his story as a veteran turned farmer. He credits his farming path to an Iraqi farmer he observed while on patrol. As he transitioned to life on the farm, he found his therapy in an ax and a chainsaw. He found faith and support in his community. Now a big part of the Spence's story is his eagerness to mentor other vets through the Farmer Veteran Coalition. He started his current poultry business with 30 hens. Now the farm employs Spence and another full-time employee while focusing on poultry. They start between 800-1000 broilers every two weeks from mid-April through December and manage 200 layers.  Spence is a fixture in the pastured poultry community, offering advice to APPPA members and veterans in addition to consulting services. He is the current Vice President of APPPA. We end the conversation with a simple question, "how has your pastured poultry business changed?" Feed, chicks, and experience are given. But it's the people Spence relies on. "A farm will do everything in it's power to become the most important thing in your life." -- Spence. This week on Straight, No Chaser, Katy Keiffer chats with Jeannette Beranger of the American Livestock Breed Conservancy and Chris Ritthaler of the Farmer Veteran Coalition. Tune in and hear how the ALBC helps set up veterans who are interested in taking up farming after serving for their country. Learn why heritage livestock appeals to these vets and how they adapt to life on the farm even if they have no background in agriculture. Also learn more about the unemployment epidemic that veterans in our country face and why the general public should learn more about what veterans actually did when they served. This program was sponsored by Hearst Ranch.   “There’s been a huge upsurge in interest in traditional breeds over the past few years.” –Jeanette Beranger of the American Livestock Breed Conservancy on Straight, No Chaser “There are a few reasons you’re seeing vets interested in heritage breeds. Because a lot of the vets don’t have a background in agriculture, they are taking a real close look at their situation and financials and realizing they have to be smart. Heritage breeds fit a niche market and don’t require a large level of infrastructure.” “The unemployment rate for veterans is significantly higher than the national average. The unemployment rate for vets in the post 9/11 era is over 10%.” “Less than 10% of the US has ever served in the military. There’s a huge disconnect between the knowledge base of what a veteran does.” –Chris Ritthaler of the Farmer Veteran Coalition on Straight, No Chaser
