This week, we had an engaging and enlightening discussion with Dr. Ashley Smith about teen anxiety. Dr. Ashley Smith is an award-winning licensed psychologist and expert in anxiety, and we explore the critical differences between stress and anxiety, the various factors that are causing the surge in teen anxiety, and actionable strategies for parents and educators to support teens who are struggling. Dr. Ashley highlights the importance of distinguishing typical adolescent stress from pervasive anxiety that disrupts daily life, and she discusses the role of societal shifts like technology, social media, and recent global events in shaping teens' mental health, alongside challenges like academic pressure. She also offers some practical advice on recognizing hidden signs of anxiety, such as perfectionism, avoidance, and emotional dysregulation. Our conversation also uncovers how modern culture, including the “good vibes only” mindset and misinformation on social media, impacts teens' ability to process their emotions, with Dr. Ashley highlighting early intervention and equipping listeners with tools to help teens build resilience, from modeling healthy coping strategies to encouraging bravery in the face of adversity. Whether you're a parent, educator, or caregiver of teens who suffer from anxiety, this episode provides valuable insights into supporting teens through challenges while fostering their psychological strength. Show Notes: [2:23] - Anxiety, Dr. Ashley explains, acts as a warning system, but excessive anxiety can disrupt functioning and become a disorder. [5:45] - Dr. Ashley stresses the importance of early intervention for anxiety; it worsens over time and increases the risk of depression and suicide. [7:39] - Anxiety shows up in various ways, including aggression, perfectionism, and avoidance. [10:23] - Phones aren't inherently bad, but social media use can worsen anxiety through comparisons, cyberbullying, and sleep disruption. [12:17] - Dr. Ashley argues that technology and social media have amplified teen anxiety, with factors like COVID-19 and social inequality contributing. [15:14] - Anxiety and depression often exist in tandem, with societal pressures and heavy workloads increasing teens' stress. [18:00] - Anxiety should not be used as an excuse for inaction; building resilience and equipping teens with tools is very important. [19:26] - It's so important for parents to help kids manage anxiety, teach coping skills, and encourage being brave. [22:42] - Modeling anxiety strategies shows kids how to cope, but therapy can offer further support. [23:52] - Ashley points out that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are effective treatments for anxiety. [26:38] - Parents should approach therapy conversations gently, understanding that their teen may not recognize their anxiety. [27:24] - Treating teen anxiety can involve parents using strategies like SPACE, focusing on calm, non-judgmental conversations. [30:21] - Parents of teens with anxiety often feel isolated and judged, but Dr. Ashley encourages listeners that support groups can help. [32:57] - To manage social anxiety, parents should limit exposure to social media to prevent unnecessary stress. While new advances to medicine are exciting, there is also a profound wisdom in ancient healing practices. Adaptogens are a class of plants and mushrooms that can aid the body's responses to both physical and mental stressors. And at a time when so many folks are struggling with high levels of stress and susceptibility to both chronic and infectious diseases, there's never been a better time to help restore balance to our bodies. Today, you're going to learn from one of the leading experts on adaptogens: Tero Isokauppila. In this episode you'll discover: What percentage of physician visits are related to stress. How humans' exposure to stress has evolved over time. The definition of adaptogen and the history of adaptogenic substances. Three properties of an adaptogen. How adaptogens work systemically. What the HPA axis is and how it works in the body. How stressful situations can impact your nutritional needs. The connection between gut health and mood. Specific adaptogens that contain melanin, and their benefits. In January of 2014, after a 12-year career in marketing and event planning, Angela left the corporate world to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. Around this same time, she read “The Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide” by Francine Jay and was blown away by the philosophy of living with less and the freedom and peace that come with a minimalist lifestyle. She began implementing the book’s recommendations and, much to her surprise, decluttering was actually fun – exhilarating even! Friends noticed the changes and soon she was getting requests for help with their homes. Angela found so much joy in sharing what I learned that she began helping others experience the liberating joy of having a clutter-free, organized life. In our culture, we’re always striving for more—a fitter body, a more Instagrammable house, or a more substantial paycheck. And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having aspirations, cultivating those goals is a meaningless pursuit unless it comes from a strong foundation of self-worth. You are capable of achieving your goals because you are deserving of them, not because you are lacking in some way. This can be a hard skill to master because many of us have a laundry list of skills and traits we believe we could improve upon. But you’ll find that your life will change if you can simply believe that you are enough, that you are deserving, and you are worth it. That’s why I’m excited to share this conversation with Marisa Peer. Marisa is a world-renowned therapist, a best-selling author, and a specialist in teaching simple steps that produce life-changing results. On today’s show, she’s sharing the transformation that’s available to you by simply believing you are enough. You’ll hear about the incredible power of your thoughts and words, how to change your behaviors by making them familiar, and how to manifest anything you want. Marisa’s insights are truly groundbreaking, so get ready to listen in, take notes, and change the way you think! In this episode you’ll discover: How Marisa coached Vogue Magazine to shift their tone and messaging. The effects that the media can have on our self-esteem. Why Marisa finds the conventional therapy model frustrating. The framework of Rapid Transformational Therapy. How your thoughts can influence your reality. Why our minds tend to be scared of hunger. In my experience, when you transform your life and achieve a greater level of fitness, many people assume it’s due to a strict (and unrealistic) regimen. They imagine hours upon hours logged at the gym, and tiny portions of boring, bland meals on repeat. But anyone who’s maintained a healthy lifestyle long-term knows that there’s a better and more sustainable way. Making healthy choices isn’t about torture—it’s about focusing on the things that you enjoy, and creating a lifestyle that works for you. Today’s episode is about finding that balance for yourself, not only physically, but in all aspects of your life. My guest is Tom Hopper, an incredible actor, husband, father, and fitness advocate. His story will inspire you to cultivate your confidence, shift your perception, and create a sustainable baseline of health and happiness for yourself. In this episode you’ll discover: The two main ways you can spark a change in your thinking. How Tom used fitness to set himself apart from other actors in the industry. The shocking link between testosterone and gluconeogenesis. Which approach to eating Tom uses to feel his very best. The training regimen and insights that keeps Tom fit. How stem cell therapy healed Tom’s herniated disk. Why your ego has no place in the gym (and how to understand your limits). The resources that Tom used to learn more about longevity and performance. What it means to find your baseline in health and fitness. Why sustainability plays a big role in maintaining a healthy diet. How Tom balances his career and family despite being away from home. The importance of approaching marriage as a unified team. What it means to find peace in being uncomfortable. The important message that I Feel Prettyaddresses. How you can uncover a level of confidence from training. The one diet change that had the biggest effect on Tom’s health. If you were to type in your search engine, “how to lose fat,” I bet you’d find a lot of articles emphasizing the importance of diet and exercise. Undoubtedly, those two components play a major role in changing your body composition. But there’s a huge piece of the puzzle that is missing from common knowledge—sleep. If you really dig into the science, you’ll find that your sleep quality plays a more important role in fat loss than diet and exercise! However, this information has not (yet!) made its way into our culture. Sleep isn’t part of the conversation, because it is seemingly less actionable than meal prepping or putting in work in the gym. In this episode, my mission is to help you understand the importance of sleep for your body, hormones, and overall fitness. I’ll share facts and strategies about regulating hormone levels, and how sleep influences the body’s basic mechanisms (including the brain and gut!) You’ll learn four actionable steps you can take to enhance your sleep quality, and in turn improve your body. In this episode you’ll discover: How sleep quality is affected by your hormone function. Why our culture devalues the importance of sleep. How to take responsibility for your sleep routine. Why utilizing a sleep aid is a temporary solution for insomnia. The difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat. How sleep deprivation can influence your metabolic systems. Which type of fat is the most dangerous, and how it relates to sleep deprivation. The importance of melatonin and the two factors that help regulate your levels. Why environmental darkness is crucial for deep sleep. The role of Human Growth Hormone in the body (and how it relates to sleep!) What factor is the biggest epigenetic triggerfor your aging process. The shocking effects of sleep debt on the thyroid gland. How a lack of sleep can diminish your willpower. The three main (destructive) ways the body reacts when we are under stress. In what part of the body the majority of melatonin is produced. The importance of cortisol managementfor overall health. The incredible link between gut health and sleep quality. Gift Ideas for Parents – Episode 157 ***FB Group - FRTV Wedding Planning Community*** Pause and subscribe! Take a screenshot and share! It is tradition to give a gift to your parents on your wedding day. We are here to give you a few ideas on what those gifts should be. Doesn't have to be given at the wedding. Plate, plaque, photo frame with a meaningful saying or poem Personalized cutting board Monogrammed/personalized: mirror, wreath, wall hanging, mugs, glasses, fishing lures, jewelry, cufflinks, tie clips, pocket knives Frame to add wedding photos, bride/dad, bride/mom, groom/dad, groom/mom and/or family A weekend getaway Spa day or couple's massage Tickets: sporting event, concert, play or whatever they are into Robes Embroidered handkerchiefs Father of the bride socks ;) Man crates for dad, boxes for mom Gift cert for an upscale shopping place like William Sonoma MINTED ***LISTENER STORIES*** Mother of the Bride My mother is wonderful. She is helping when she can and paying for things here and there. When we picked out my wedding dress, she put $200 total down and told me I had to pay for the rest- so I did. I visited my aunt a few weeks later and my mom came up in the conversation. Apparently, my mom had told my aunt that she paid for my wedding dress... I was a waitress at the time, and attending college- which I still pay for by myself, and I was appalled that my mom tried saying she paid for my entire dress when she paid $200 out of $1,000. I never spoke to my mother about this, but I am still shocked. A few weekends ago, my mom and I went to a bridal show together and found a great DJ. My mom was very convincing that I should get a DJ who is going to be great (which I was reassured by this in one of your podcasts- to invest in a good DJ because that is what people remember.) We found a DJ and again, my mom put $200 down. After we had signed the contract and made a payment, my mom looks at me during the bridal show and says "you better start making payments on this". At this point, I wanted to cry. I know my parents help out when they can, but I do not make enough money to pay for all of this on my own. My fiancé pays the bills in our house and the money I have, I pay on my credit card and tuition.
