People ask me all the time, “Does Botox work for vestibular migraine?” Another common question people ask is, “Is it going to get rid of my dizziness?” That question is missing the point. When you're treating vestibular migraine, you're not treating the dizziness. Does Botox work for VM? Yes, but not because you're treating the dizziness. In this episode, you'll hear me synthesize a study that dove into the impact of Botox on vestibular migraine—how it works, who it works for, and some important things to know if you'd like to explore this treatment for yourself. In this episode, we'll dig into: What is Botox for and not to be used for How Botox treats vestibular migraine Where the Botox injections happen for vestibular migraine If insurance covers Botox for vestibular migraine How many Botox treatments it takes to see any change Important note if you have EDS and VM and are interested in Botox If you think Botox is just freezing the muscles and therefore vestibular migraine goes away—no. Nicotine, NDT Bans, and the Truth Big Pharma Doesn't Want You to Hear In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Bryan Ardis to challenge the mainstream narrative on nicotine and expose what's really behind the push to ban it worldwide. Backed by history, published research, and clinical data, Dr. Ardis explains how nicotine may support recovery from long COVID, reduce inflammation, improve autoimmune conditions, sharpen brain function, and even play a role in cancer prevention. We also cover the FDA's plan to ban natural desiccated thyroid medications and how it connects to larger efforts to restrict patient access to bioidentical hormones and other natural treatments. Dr. Ardis breaks down the financial and political forces at play, and I share my own cancer experience and how this information could shift your approach after a diagnosis. If you're ready to hear the research, the risks, and the real reasons behind these bans, this conversation will give you the clarity you need to protect your health and your options. His internship at the University of Minnesota was a transformative experience. He faced multiple injuries that complicated his recovery process. Zach developed a personalized jumper's knee protocol based on research and self-education. Communication with coaches was crucial for managing his injury and training. He critiqued traditional physical therapy methods for being too standardized and ineffective. Zach found success in using specific exercises that targeted his knee pain. He emphasized the psychological impact of dealing with chronic pain and injury. Zach's experience led him to help others with similar injuries through education and support. He believes in the importance of critical thinking in rehabilitation and recovery. Zach had to gauge his pain threshold during activities. Initial sharp pain in the knee indicated a possible partial tear. Tendinopathy symptoms developed over time with different sensations. Isometrics provided pain relief for Zach for several months. Athletes often face resistance from trainers when seeking alternative rehab methods. Zach's recent knee injury was a result of heavy eccentric loading. Effective rehab requires finding the highest possible entry point. Rehabilitation should focus on loading the muscle, not just the joint. Zach's approach includes using RPR and square one techniques. Rehab is about applying proven methods to individual cases. Ground substance in tendons consists of proteoglycans and water. Aging leads to a loss of spring-like properties in tendons. Pathology in tendons can develop long before pain is felt. General health significantly impacts tendon health. Weight gain adds extra load on tendons, increasing injury risk. High blood sugar can stiffen tendons due to sugar cross-links. Dietary choices can influence tendon health and recovery. Collagen supplementation may benefit tendon health, especially if deficient in nutrients. Environmental factors like circadian rhythms can affect tendon recovery. A holistic approach is essential for optimal tendon health. Listen in to get a vivid picture of what emotional-energetic contact is all about and how it impacts the success of therapy. “Emotion is the perception of energy flow and movement in the body.” “What I'm describing by way of your own emotions and sensations is that the human organism expands and contract. It pulsates. And that this pulsation is a biologic phenomenon. It is not a poetic metaphor.” “Reich referred to this way of thinking as functional thinking…this by the way is distinct from today's pervasive mechanistic thinking which in the realm of technology and machines is completely rational, in the realm of the living, not at all.” Segments of Armoring Within the Body Diagram of the Layers of Emotional Structure Diagram of the Layers of Emotional Structure With Armoring Question or Comment? Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) often conjures extreme images — either as a medieval torture method or a miraculous cure. But what's the reality? Gabe Howard, who lives with bipolar disorder, and Dr. Nicole Washington, a board certified psychiatrist, dive deep into the facts, debunking myths and exploring the nuances of ECT as a treatment for bipolar disorder. In this episode, they discuss the effectiveness of ECT, why it's not a first-line treatment, and the barriers patients face, from logistical challenges to fears about memory loss. With candid insights and personal reflections, they tackle tough questions: Is ECT worth it? What are the real risks? How does it compare to medication? Whether you're curious, skeptical, or considering ECT for yourself or a loved one, this episode offers a grounded perspective on a complex, life-changing therapy. Don't miss this enlightening and thought-provoking discussion. Cold Open Transcript: Gabe: Controversy aside, I don't understand how zapping somebody's brain makes them better. It just doesn't make any sense. Are electrical currents magic? Do they have some sort of medicinal capabilities? Dr. Nicole: No, [Laughter]. Well, no. Gabe, electro-currents are not magical. But the seizure that they induce is what can be valuable to the person with the disorder. Gabe: So the electrical shock stimulates the seizure. And the… Dr. Nicole: Yes. Gabe: Seizure is where the treatment comes in Dr. Nicole: The seizure is the treatment. The shock is just how we get there. This week, we had an engaging and enlightening discussion with Dr. Ashley Smith about teen anxiety. Dr. Ashley Smith is an award-winning licensed psychologist and expert in anxiety, and we explore the critical differences between stress and anxiety, the various factors that are causing the surge in teen anxiety, and actionable strategies for parents and educators to support teens who are struggling. Dr. Ashley highlights the importance of distinguishing typical adolescent stress from pervasive anxiety that disrupts daily life, and she discusses the role of societal shifts like technology, social media, and recent global events in shaping teens' mental health, alongside challenges like academic pressure. She also offers some practical advice on recognizing hidden signs of anxiety, such as perfectionism, avoidance, and emotional dysregulation. Our conversation also uncovers how modern culture, including the “good vibes only” mindset and misinformation on social media, impacts teens' ability to process their emotions, with Dr. Ashley highlighting early intervention and equipping listeners with tools to help teens build resilience, from modeling healthy coping strategies to encouraging bravery in the face of adversity. Whether you're a parent, educator, or caregiver of teens who suffer from anxiety, this episode provides valuable insights into supporting teens through challenges while fostering their psychological strength. Show Notes: [2:23] - Anxiety, Dr. Ashley explains, acts as a warning system, but excessive anxiety can disrupt functioning and become a disorder. [5:45] - Dr. Ashley stresses the importance of early intervention for anxiety; it worsens over time and increases the risk of depression and suicide. [7:39] - Anxiety shows up in various ways, including aggression, perfectionism, and avoidance. [10:23] - Phones aren't inherently bad, but social media use can worsen anxiety through comparisons, cyberbullying, and sleep disruption. [12:17] - Dr. Ashley argues that technology and social media have amplified teen anxiety, with factors like COVID-19 and social inequality contributing. [15:14] - Anxiety and depression often exist in tandem, with societal pressures and heavy workloads increasing teens' stress. [18:00] - Anxiety should not be used as an excuse for inaction; building resilience and equipping teens with tools is very important. [19:26] - It's so important for parents to help kids manage anxiety, teach coping skills, and encourage being brave. [22:42] - Modeling anxiety strategies shows kids how to cope, but therapy can offer further support. [23:52] - Ashley points out that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are effective treatments for anxiety. [26:38] - Parents should approach therapy conversations gently, understanding that their teen may not recognize their anxiety. [27:24] - Treating teen anxiety can involve parents using strategies like SPACE, focusing on calm, non-judgmental conversations. [30:21] - Parents of teens with anxiety often feel isolated and judged, but Dr. Ashley encourages listeners that support groups can help. [32:57] - To manage social anxiety, parents should limit exposure to social media to prevent unnecessary stress. Did you know that the diagnostic criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD) has remained the same since it was officially added to the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders in 1980? Forty years later, BPD remains deeply misunderstood by the public and isolating for those who live with the condition. On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth chats with Mark L. Ruffalo, MSW., D.Psa., about his extensive work in the field of BPD. The pair discuss the history of BPD, its symptoms and characteristics, and overlap with C-PTSD. About Mark L. Ruffalo: Mark L. Ruffalo, M.S.W., D.Psa., is a psychotherapist in private practice in Tampa, Florida, and serves as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and Adjunct Instructor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine. He has broad clinical experience in the psychoanalytic treatment of a range of psychiatric conditions with particular interest in the psychotherapy of schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. During his training at the University of Pittsburgh, Mark worked with severely ill patients in long-term psychotherapy, an area in which he has developed significant expertise. He has published previously in the American Journal of Psychotherapy, Psychoanalytic Social Work, Psychiatric Times, and the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease. He currently serves as Co-Director of the Psychotherapy Track at the UCF/HCA Orlando Psychiatry Residency Program and is the Founding Editor of The Carlat Psychotherapy Report. Mark's current research interests include the object relations theory of borderline personality disorder; communication dilemmas, paradoxes, and double binds in personality pathology; and deficits in logical reasoning in psychotic and borderline states. Tired of not having good treatment options available for Hashimoto's? If so, I have some good news for you. Outside of traditional treatments like thyroid medication, there are some incredibly powerful natural options that have been shown in some research studies to help. One of the most potent is known as nigella sativa. I'm going to use nigella sativa and black seed oil almost interchangeably in this video but here's the difference: Nigella sativa is the plant that produces black seeds and black seeds can be cold pressed to produce black seed oil. The active ingredients in nigella sativa can be found in both black seeds and black seed oil so it's very likely that taking any of these 3 may provide benefits. One study that looked at nigella sativa found the following: 1. It had a pro-thyroid benefit and acted to help reduce TSH levels and increase free thyroid hormone levels. 2. It had a thyroid-antibody-reducing benefit and resulted in a decrease in TPO antibodies by almost 50%. 3. It may provide an anti-thyroid cancer benefit by reducing VEGF levels. These results are incredible and should perk the interest of just about every patient with Hashimoto's. The study referenced here used nigella sativa at 2 grams per day but I think black seed oil can provide superior benefits. As someone who's been helping thousands of women from around the world for more than 24 years, I'd like to share with you the 3 most common mistakes women make when trying to clear the HPV virus. Through my process of observation, I've been able to see what works and what doesn't work. Of course, it's always individualized - each of us is unique, and each person's body may have different requirements to support their immune system in clearing the virus. It's well established in research that the human body can clear the HPV virus to negative and keep it negative. Even if you're exposed again in the future, your body can protect you. So, the question becomes: if the HPV virus is not going away, why is it not going away? That's one of the first clarifications I always make. We need to ask why your immune system and your body are not protecting you from this virus. When we ask that question, we can dig deeper into understanding what you need to do to be successful at clearing it. We're here to help you!
