Producer Jane Rosenthal joins us to discuss family comedy Meet the Parents and the successful franchise it inspired. What began as the simple yet wildly entertaining premise of meeting a tough, mobster-like father-in-law like the iconic Robert De Niro turned into a comedic phenomenon. Rosenthal reveals how De Niro's commitment to blending realism with laugh-out-loud absurdity created unforgettable moments for audiences everywhere. She shares how the film's success was rooted in the nerve-wracking and often awkward universal experience of meeting your partner's parents, a moment that viewers can bring their personal experience to. The sequel, Meet the Fockers, was envisioned during the first film's production, with Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand quickly cast as Ben Stiller's on-screen parents. With rumors of a new installment in the franchise, audiences can look forward to more laughs with the family! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The laughs keep rolling as Dom, Q, and ILL dive into the hilarious chaos of Meet the Fockers! Meet the Fockers is a 2004 romantic comedy directed by Jay Roach, Jay also directed the original Meet the Parents, as well as Dinner for Schmucks, The Austin Powers series. Meet the Fockers is the sequel to Meet the Parents, we have Greg or ‘Gaylord' Focker played by Ben Stiller. Greg is engaged to Pam Byrnes played by Teri Polo, the contents of the first film was Greg meeting Pam's parents Jack Byrnes played by Robert De Niro and Dina played by Blythe Danner. The short of that story is that Jack is a retired CIA agent and did everything he could do disrupt, undermine and ultimately break up Greg and Pam before finally agreeing that Greg was indeed a good guy and a good match. In Meet the Fockers, this story in some ways repeats with Jack and Dina meeting Greg's parents Bernie and Roz played by Dustin Hoffman and Barabara Streisand. Editor - Jon Poll THE COLOR PURPLE editor Jon Poll was sure they had the wrong guy when his agent told him they were interested in having him come aboard as the editor. He even joked they should probably call WHIPLASH and LA LA LAND editor, Tom Cross ACE. While musicals were not necessarily a big part of Jon's background coming into the project, no one who sees THE COLOR PURPLE would ever question his prowess for interweaving a powerful narrative with incredible music. THE COLOR PURPLE is a story of love and resilience, based on the novel and the Broadway musical of the same name. It is a decades-spanning tale of one woman's journey to independence. Torn apart from her sister and her children, Celie faces many hardships in life, including an abusive husband. With support from a sultry singer named Shug Avery, as well as her stand-her-ground stepdaughter, Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood. Jon Poll Jon has cut a wide array of films, from such acclaimed features as Bombshell, The Greatest Showman and 2022's Father of the Bride, to box office hits like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember, Meet the Parents and its sequel, and Scary Movie 3. Poll made his feature directorial debut with the comedy drama Charlie Bartlett. Poll and director Jay Roach are frequent collaborators on many projects. In addition to the Austin Powers sequels, Poll co-produced, edited and directed second unit on Meet the Fockers, executive produced and edited The Campaign, executive produced, edited and directed the title sequence for Dinner for Schmucks, and edited Mystery, Alaska. Poll also executive produced Judd Apatow's The 40-Year-Old Virgin. His editing credits include the films Forever Young and Death to Smoochy. Poll directed, edited and co-produced on the HBO series The Brink as well. A graduate of USC's Cinema school with a degree in film production, Poll resides in Los Angeles with Julia, his charming and lovely wife of 400 years. This week we are celebrating 2 important dates; November 1st which marks the day that Death Wish 3 hit theaters back in 1985 and November 3rd, 1921 which was the day that Charles Bronson was born. So what better way to celebrate than to get together "3 of the nicest bad guys ever" from Death Wish 3. Alex Winter, Kirk Taylor, and Tony Spiridakis played the roles of "Hermosa", "The Giggler", and "Angel". They talked about their auditions, death scenes, personal experiences with Charles Bronson, Michael Winner, and so much more. This reunion was put together by myself and Chris Rauch who runs the Charles Bronson Twitter account and we thought, "hey let's get these bad guys together," but what we didn't know was that we reunited 3 people who formed a bond on set and haven't seen each other in almost 36 years. It was quite special to see them together again. This is by far the coolest thing we have ever been a part of, enjoy! I've got nipples Greg... Can you milk me? What an incredible line, and what an unbelievably good comedy to get stuck into this week. Today's film is hopefully one that has had you laughing so much you've almost cried, as Ben and Jack delve deep into the glorious treasure trove that is the 2000 comedy, 'Meet the Parents'.Ben Stiller stars as Greg alongside Robert De Niro as Jack Burns as we follow Stiller's Greg desperate attempts to achieve Jack and his wife Dina's (Blythe Danner) approval to marry their daughter Pam - played wonderfully by Teri Polo. Given that at one point or another within almost all of our lives we'll experience that nerve shredding experience of trying to impress our in-laws this film has to many crossovers that Ben and Jack can relate to.There's an unbelievable supporting cast that we make sure to give a big nod to and on top of this we pick out our favourite lines from the film. We had no choice but to get well and truly head first into the poem, the brilliant grace scene and Puff the Magic Dragon. We talk through the circle of trust and we even get a chance to sneak a line in or two about the magnificent sequel Meet the Fockers. It goes without saying that given Stiller and De Niro go head to head throughout the film we have to get into an epic gunslinger for the MVP within this one, and as we always do we'll get into how the film has aged. But for the record - how much did you laugh in this one? How many times did you find yourself reminded by a joke you had forgotten a moment you never noticed or a line that flaws you even though you know it's coming.Bring Your Own Blockbuster isn't just a film review podcast, we try our best each week to dive deep into the themes and discussions that make cinema so special - and we'd love to hear your feedback on the film. What did meet the parents mean to you? What did we miss? Get involved and tell us what you think on social media, you can find us everywhere at @byobpod Hosted on Acast. It's our big bad season four finale, babes, and we're joined by actor and singer, Alanna Ubach. You Might Know Her From Euphoria, The Flight Attendant, Coco, Clockwatchers, Waiting, Meet the Fockers, Sister Act 2, Beakman's World, Bombshell, Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, The Brady Bunch Movie, and the Legally Blonde films. Alanna gave us all the goods on joining season two of The Flight Attendant, showing up to her Euphoria audition with a glass of wine, and her big musical number “La Llorona” in Coco. We also got to talk about two personal favorites: her portrayal of Doreen, Marcia's lesbian BFF, in The Brady Bunch Movie (and the similarities between Doreen and Tai in Clueless), plus the indie classic, Clockwatchers, opposite an incredible ensemble of newly minted movie stars who may or may not have been a bit…cliquey. This episode was a total barn burner. Get into it now. Follow us on social media @damianbellino || @rodemanne Discussed this week Harvey Fierstein's autobiography I Was Better Last Night Fierstein dated Bruce Bibbie aka Ted Casablanca (of The Awful Truth) for 5 years Julia Sweeney's Pat, Bob Vila, Urkel, and Ted Casablanca Neither one of us cares about Newsies but I'd see it since Harvey wrote the book Harvey in Mrs. Doubtfire montage scene Two youngest Bradys are most disgusting Susan Olsen is a homophobe Ghost town episode of Brady Bunch is Anne's favorite Joining Season 2 of The Flight Attendant Plays Lexi and Cassie's mom on Euphoria (created by Sam Levinson) Christiane F, Foxes, Over the Edge, Sid and Nancy, Plays Imelda in Coco and gets to sing “La Llorona” Loves character actors: Quinn Cummings, Dana Hill, Richard E Grant Clockwaters (Jill Sprecher) is the end of the indie era Ensemble was insane: Lisa Kudrow, Parker Posey, Toni Collette, Alanna Ubach The Brady Bunch Movie is outrageously good go watch it! Almost had scenes with Christopher Knight and Davy Jones Auditioned for Tai in Clueless Reese Witherspoon kicks her ass in Freeway (1966) then they play bffs in Legally Blonde six years later Lesbian ending to Legally Blonde? Played Ben Stiller's Cuban babysitter in Meet the Fockers Barbra Streisand is a cozy bubby Penny Marshall directed her in Renaissance Man See Dad Run sitcom with Scott Baio Beakman's World vs Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce Jeanine Pirro in Bombshell Naomi in Waiting ICONIC We love Adrian Zmed (played Danny on tour in 90s and Teen Angel in the 200s) Grease 2 > Grease “'We're Gonna Score Tonight” Previous guest Marissa Jaret Winokur (Ep #123) bff with Adrian Zmed Sondra Lee told Damian he was “persistent” (YMKHF ep #38) and Denny Dillon (YMKHF ep #68) appreciated his “tenacity” “Tiger” is a cheap Brady Bunch joke
