As a cross-interview with Sustainable Planet, Kimberly Weir, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Northern Kentucky University and co-host of Sustainable Planet talks with Akshat Rathi, award-winning senior reporter for Bloomberg News and the host of Zero, a climate-solutions podcast for Bloomberg Green and author of Climate Capitalism: Winning the Race to Zero Emissions and Solving the Crisis of Our Age.Topics Kimberly & Akshat discuss include:How a misinformed campaign marketing slogan about ‘clean coal' led Akshat into the year-long pursuit of uncovering the truth about climate technologyWhy economists feel the way to address climate change is to put a price on carbonHow to achieve negative carbon emissions since zero emissions alone isn't enoughWhy, when it comes to electric cars, you've never heard of Wan Gang, though Elon Musk is a household nameWhy the very industries that created lithium-ion batteries, solar cells, and carbon capture and storage are so resistant to employing that technologyHow private capital from billionaires like Bill Gates and anyone with a 401K plan is a key part of pursuing climate technologyThat climate justice is both ethically the right path but also reaps global economic benefitsThe need to shift from ‘shareholder' to ‘stakeholder' if we're going to meet the less-ambitious Paris Conference climate change goals Akshat Rathi on XListen to Part 2 of the interview on Sustainable Planet.Additional InformationThe Politics Guys PodcastMore shows from The Democracy Group

Farm workers are now entitled to a minimum wage, some guy got smashed and crashed his car. Also some dudes went to Glasgow and talked about submarines or something. Minimum wage news The Fair Work Commission has ruled that farm workers must be paid a minimum wage! This means that some workers are entitled to an 830% pay rise. Shoutout to the Australian Workers Union for bringing this complaint. Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud (who previously worked as an Agribusiness Banker) says he's mostly worried about supermarket prices. Slimeball news Victorian Liberal MP Tim Smith got incredibly drunk and smashed his car into a house. Liberal party leader Mathew Guy asked his mate to not recontest the next election, but not to resign just yet. Behind the scenes, Tim Smith pushed against conversion therapy within the Liberal party. Federal Liberal party members are urging Tim Smith to stay in politics. He's said now he won't recontest the next election. Inaction news Scott Morrison went to the COP26 conference and yelled at an empty room. His speech was full of bullshit. At the 2009 Paris Conference, rich countries pledge $100 billion to developing countries to help them build resilience to climate change. None has been given. Angus Taylor went there to push for carbon capture. Australia brought a Santos-sponsored display to the climate conference. Morrison likened climate change to Coronavirus, saying we'll be saved by new technologies. Shame the government has massively cut funding for energy research. Labor is selling totes about it. They also want to give the government “the room” to arrive at a policy in his own time. Simon Kofe, a minister in Tuvalu highlighted the folly of the big nations, speaking half-submerged in water. Madagascar is paying the price for cheap flights and high emissions.

The Paris Peace Conference of 1919, held just months after the end of WWI, gathered together the leaders of the world. Their task: to redraw the world map and create a peace that would last forever. While it clearly failed in its second task, 100 years on we still live in a world created at that conference. Rear Vision re-examines the Paris Conference and the Treaty of Versailles.
Professor Margaret MacMillan is a Canadian historian, author and broadcaster. In 2018 she delivered the Reith Lectures on BBC Radio 4, in which she examined the tangled history of war and society. She was born in Toronto in 1943, and her interest in history was kindled by the stories her parents told about when they were young and by the historical adventure novels she read as a child. After a long academic career in Canada, she found herself in the international spotlight in her late 50s. Her book Peacemakers, about the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, won the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize and many other awards, and became a best-seller. Margaret is the great-granddaughter of David Lloyd George, who attended the Paris Conference as the British Prime Minister. She has also written books about Nixon and Mao, about Europe’s path to World War One, and about personalities who have shaped history. She became the Warden of St Antony’s College, Oxford, in 2007, and retired from the role in 2017. In the 2018 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List, Professor MacMillan was appointed a Companion of Honour. She continues to research and write. Michael Berkeley’s guest on the centenary of Armistice Day is the historian Margaret MacMillan. In this year’s Reith Lectures, Margaret Macmillan delivered a powerful series of lectures exploring war and society, and our complex feelings towards those who fight. She is Emeritus Professor of International History at the University of Oxford, and Professor of History at the University of Toronto in her native Canada. But she wasn’t always as well known as she is now; her book Peacemakers, about the Paris Conference at the end of the First World War, was rejected by a string of publishers – before winning the 2002 Samuel Johnson Prize and catapulting her into the public eye in her late fifties. Many more best-selling and prize-winning books have followed, including Nixon in China, The Uses and Abuses of History, and The War That Ended Peace, about the long build-up to the First World War. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Margaret Macmillan reflects on how our perception of the First World War has changed in the last hundred years, and sounds a note of warning as she perceives worrying parallels between the years leading up to that conflict and the state of the world today. Both her grandfathers fought in the First World War and she chooses music which reflects her Welsh and Scottish heritage, as she argues for the importance of personal stories within the big picture of history. She and Michael Berkeley explore the paradox that great works of literature, art, and music are created out of the horror of war, and she chooses music from both World Wars by Ravel, by Strauss and by Tippett; all of whom, in different ways, bring beauty out of appalling suffering and destruction. At the Paris Conference of the Parties - COP21 - almost 200 nations agreed to reduce greenhouse gases to levels yielding no more than 1.5 to 2.0 degrees of warming. Scientists are convinced that anything above the 2 degree mark locks in changes to the planetary climate beyond civilization's adaptive capacity. For some climate activists, like Gary Cranston, the accord was an exercise in empty, feel-good promise making. For example, a group of climate scientists recently submitted a letter to The Independent calling the agreement "false hope" and full of "deadly flaws." They cited the fact that the CO2 reduction commitments in the agreement don't kick in until 2020. By that time, the scientists argue, so much more CO2 will have been pumped into the atmosphere that we may already be locked into warming, pushing us above the 2 degree line.

Nick Eyre and Myles Allen give a talk for the Oxford Martin School on climate change and the IPCC report. One of the key objectives of the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), completed in 2014, was to provide a comprehensive description of the science of climate change and options for adaptation and mitigation for negotiators preparing for the Paris Conference in 2015. IPCC authors Myles Allen and Nick Eyre will explain the IPCC process, and ask whether this model of a technical panel giving “policy relevant, not policy prescriptive” advice to governments is still working. They will highlight some key findings, such as the increased level of confidence that human influence is the dominant cause of the warming observed since the mid-20th-century, the importance of cumulative carbon dioxide emissions, the challenges of emission reductions, but also the multiple mitigation pathways still open for achieving the goal of limiting warming to 2oC. They will also discuss some of the things the IPCC does not do, such as specifically attributing blame for observed climate change impacts, and ask what the options are for the IPCC going forward.
