I've been getting a lot of questions lately as our following and show has grown such as: “What actually is a functional health approach to weight loss?” “Are labs like the GI Map or DUTCH test worth it?” “What do I even do with the results?” If you've ever thought, “I eat clean. I work out. I track my food. And yet… nothing's changing,” this episode is for you. In today's conversation, I open up about what I've learned after years of doing everything “right” and still feeling inflamed, exhausted, and stuck in a body that felt like it was working against me. We'll unpack the real reasons your body may be resisting fat loss, healing, and energy. To all the ill-informed men in my comments: It's not just discipline or willpower or eating less and moving more. You'll learn why functional testing can reveal what basic labs miss, and how systems like your gut, thyroid, liver, and adrenals all communicate in a connected “group chat”, where one disruption creates a cascade. I'll share the exact myths I had to break about weight loss, hormones, and healing and the turning point that finally helped me get real answers. This episode is about reconnecting with your body, learning to read its signals, and understanding that your symptoms aren't random, they're messages. You'll walk away with clarity, compassion for yourself, and hope that yes, this is fixable. If your body feels broken… this is the permission slip and path forward you've been waiting for. How the (part veggie) sausage gets made...Cara Nicoletti comes from a long line of butchers, but her grandfather didn't want her to follow in his footsteps. It's physical work, it requires long hours, the pay isn't great, and the path is even tougher for women. Cara went against her grandfather's wishes anyway and became a butcher — but she hasn't followed a traditional path. She spent ten years developing a type of sausage that none of her ancestors could have imagined. When it came time to start selling them on her own, it took a woman entrepreneur to tell her, “You're not thinking big enough.” Cara tells us about the challenges of getting her business off the ground, what makes her sausages special, and why she named the company after her grandfather. This episode originally aired on July 24, 2020, and was produced by Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara and Julia Shu, edited by Tracey Samuelson and mixed by Jared O'Connell. Today, Sandra quizzes Rob on gut health, inflammation, and fats. These themes are all interconnected, and we discuss the role that certain types of fat have for our gut health and overall health. We talk about the biggest sources of fat in the average Canadian diet and if any of these foods are also included in the anti-inflammatory MIND diet. We link back these stats to reasons why (in general) the North American diet can be more of a pro-inflammatory way of eating and ways to alter this to help. On this episode I sit down with my friend Dave Knapp, an independent journalist and community leader in the world of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Living with obesity and type 2 diabetes himself, Dave has built a platform dedicated to connecting and educating people using these life-changing peptides. We break down the latest updates on the FDA's crackdown on compounding pharmacies and what it could mean for the future of GLP-1 access. We also dive into the shady role of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) in driving up drug prices, the realities of living with obesity, and why traditional approaches to weight loss often fall short. Dave shares insights from his personal journey, including his experiences with keto and the struggles his community has faced. Topics Discussed: What is happening with the FDA's crackdown on compounding pharmacies and GLP-1 medications? How do Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) drive up drug prices and impact patient access? What are GLP-1 receptor agonists, and how are they changing the lives of people with obesity and type 2 diabetes? Eat Less Fear; Behold More GloryWe eat a LOT of fear in daily lives. This works disease in our souls, blinding us to God's glory and blocking us from living as disciples. In the Transfiguration of Jesus (Luke 9:28-38), we learn another path of dealing with fear and beholding the glory of God:Going to the mountain, praying and listening to Jesus. What might it mean to go to the mountain? One example: Watching children at the church's early learning center fascinated by a visiting dog.A reflection on how to eat less fear and behold more glory; wrapping up with the promises of Jesus, who listens to us, prays for us and gives us his glory.

Maybe you've even asked him to zap you skinny! But, it feels like he's not answering. It feels like it's hard, you obsess over food, you want to be free, but he seems to be silent. What do you do? Rice is the main staple for over half the world's population. The crop has problems though – it is vulnerable to climate change, whether that's drought or flooding. It's also a crop that contributes to climate change, as it uses more water than other grain crops and is frequently grown in flooded conditions. Rice production is also a big source of methane emissions. In this programme Ruth Alexander hears about the possible solutions to these problems. Dr Yvonne Pinto, Director General of the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines talks about their work developing new varieties of rice, and new more sustainable farming techniques. One rice company trialling these techniques is Tilda in the UK. General Manager Jean-Philippe Laborde explains what difference it's made to water and fertiliser use as well as methane emissions. Given the problems with rice, should we just eat less of it? Jakob Klein, anthropologist at SOAS University of London explains the Chinese government's attempts to convince people to eat more potato as a staple food. And we talk about the cultural importance of rice with listeners in the Philippines and Bangladesh. If you'd like to contact the programme email thefoodchain@bbc.co.uk Presented by Ruth Alexander. Improving the health of Black Americans can start with what we put on our forks. In Episode 251 I share five foods that we should eat less. 1. PORK-a homotoxin (human poison) that should not be eaten by any of us at any time EVER! 2. SUGAR-naturally occurring sugar in our fruit and plants are healthy however the ‘added granulated, processed sugar' and high fructose corn syrup contribute to spikes in our blood sugar and cardiovascular disease 3. MEAT-our digestive system's design, from our teeth to our intestines, suggest we are not inherently meat eaters 4. DAIRY-a common allergen linked to *ear infections, *respiratory issues, *eczema, (*often occurring in children) and digestive issues. 5. ULTRA PROCESSED FOOD PRODUCTS-least nutritious, most caloric, usually with a high fat, sugar or salt content and contribute to Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Dementia, Alzheimers, Depression, Anxiety and many of other conditions. Eating less of these foods can have surprising benefits to our appearance and general indicators for health. Look around and you will likely see someone doing something on their cellphone. For many of us, cellphones are a necessity and a constant companion. What about your relationship with your cellphone? This episode begins with a look at how Americans use their cellphone, how often they check it, and how they feel if they don't have it. You can then compare and see how you fit in with everyone else. https://www.reviews.org/mobile/cell-phone-addiction/ Why are some people overweight? The assumption is that they simply eat too much food and the way to lose weight is to simply eat less. But what if the real answer is not to eat less but to eat BETTER. There is some compelling science to support that, and it is what Mark Schatzker is here to discuss. He is a writer-in-residence at the Modern Diet and Physiology Research Center at Yale University and author of the book The End Of Craving : Recovering the Lost Wisdom of Eating Well (https://amzn.to/3QPFS1l) People like mysteries. It seems to be human nature that we want to figure out how a magic trick is done or figure how whodunnit in a murder mystery. Think of all the movies, TV shows, books and podcasts that revolve around a mystery - and we want to solve it. Here to explain why mysteries are so appealing and how we can all use mystery to our advantage is Jonah Lehrer. Heather breaks down some somatic practices that you can try, as well as how to name your feelings so you are able to lower the temperature on them and recover without leaning on something else, like food or substances, to numb those feelings. She shares the valuable difference between state and story, and why changing your story can change your habits...for good! Tune in to learn more about these wonderful tools! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [6:28] How does binge eating, restricting, yo-yo dieting and anxiety all play into Healther's work today?[8:15] How often does Heather see these issues as a mental health therapist?[10:00] What are some of the biggest mistakes Heather sees people making when it comes to trying to change their behavior?[12:38] What are somatic practices and why are they so much more effective?[16:01] What is big T trauma vs. little t trauma?[20:05] Where do you start with healing your relationship with food?[24:49] How do these tools lead to long term behavior changes?[26:27] If you process your feelings more in your head, what can you do to work through it?[28:39] What is state vs. story?[32:02] How can we help children feel their feelings or tolerate distress better?[34:39] What lessons has Heather been able to learn through her solo bike packing trips?[38:24] How can you cultivate giving yourself grace?KEY TAKEAWAYS: When you learn how to feel and experience your emotions, you will no longer need other things, i.e. food or substances, to numb and avoid those feelings.Long term results come from consistency, being patient with yourself, giving yourself a lot of compassion and grace throughout the process. You either hold your emotions in your body (energy) or in your head (thoughts). Learning how to process both of them can lead to freedom from unwanted habits.QUOTES: [8:32] “The biggest disordered eating pattern is binge eating disorder, overeating, emotional eating, that sort of thing. In my practice, I do specialize in treating that, so I personally see it, but if we look at statistics, that is definitely the biggest type of disordered eating that we have going on.” - Heather Heynen“I think anybody can do anything for a finite period of time...then it becomes a function of how we can create the things we can do for an infinite amount of time." – Jenn Trepeck[13:03] “Our thoughts create our feelings, our feelings drive our behaviors, our behaviors give us our results, so you can understand why working with the thoughts and shifting to the more helpful ones is really important when we're talking about sustainable behavior change.” - Heather Heynen[13:42] “Our feelings, our emotions really are energy within our bodies, and if we don't learn how to process emotion, it gets stuck. It gets stuck within the body and it can lead to physical issues with the body, it does lead to weight gain, that's another physical component. It can lead to a lot of anxiety and depression, so processing emotions is really important.” - Heather Heynen[24:58] “Binge eating is related to emotion, meaning we are eating to try to numb, we're eating to try to change an emotion that we're feeling. We don't want to feel whatever it is that we're feeling. So if that is one of the biggest reasons that we eat, we get triggered to binge all these things and we want to stop that long term, then learning the skill of feeling our feelings, even the horrible, awful feelings, just learning to feel them and experience them, it's amazing.” - Heather Heynen[28:56] “Learning to have this more helpful narrative, helpful stories, can really help us create a state of being that's a lot more peaceful. But the other side of the coin is that if we can create a more peaceful state, then our story happens to be more helpful as well.” - Heather HeynenRESOURCES:Tickets to Salad with a Side of Fries LIVE in NYC on July 25, 2024Jenn Trepeck's Episode on Weight Loss and Wellness For RealBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES:Heather Heynen's WebsiteHeather Heynen's InstagramHeather Heynen's FacebookHeather Heynen Wellness YouTubeWeight Loss and Wellness For Real Podcast GUEST BIO:Heather Heynen is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health, Qualified Mental Health Professional, Life Coach, FMS Certified Exercise Professional, Health Coach, Podcaster & Writer.
