On April 25, 1989, James Richardson was exonerated after spending 21 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit—the poisoning deaths of his seven children in 1967. A Florida fruit picker, Richardson was wrongfully convicted after flawed police work, suppressed evidence, and false testimony. His neighbor, Bessie Reece, had poisoned the children's lunch, but jurors never learned of her criminal past or her later confession. Special prosecutor Janet Reno reopened the case, uncovering the truth and leading to Richardson's release on May 5, 1989.   Though he received a small settlement, he was denied full compensation from the state. Reece was never indicted. James Richardson passed away in 2023, a symbol of justice delayed but not denied. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This Day in Legal History: Janet Reno Sworn in as U.S. Attorney GeneralOn March 12, 1993, a groundbreaking moment in the annals of American legal and political history unfolded as Janet Reno was sworn in as the first female U.S. Attorney General. Appointed by President Bill Clinton, Reno's confirmation by the Senate marked a significant milestone, shattering a glass ceiling in the highest echelons of the U.S. justice system. Her tenure, which lasted until January 20, 2001, remains the longest in the 20th century for this pivotal role. Reno was known for her straightforward approach and her commitment to addressing complex issues directly, which earned her both admiration and criticism.Reno's time in office was characterized by her involvement in some of the most contentious and high-profile cases of the 1990s. She oversaw the prosecution of the 1993 World Trade Center bombers and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, demonstrating her dedication to combatting domestic terrorism. Her decisions, such as the authorization of the armed seizure of Elián González, a Cuban boy embroiled in international custody and immigration controversy, and her handling of the Branch Davidian siege in Waco, Texas, were sources of national debate, highlighting the challenges and pressures of her role.Despite the controversies, Reno's contributions to justice and her trailblazing role as the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney General had a lasting impact on the legal landscape. Her tenure helped pave the way for future generations of women in law and public service, inspiring countless individuals to pursue careers in these fields. Janet Reno's legacy is a testament to her resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice, marking March 12 as a notable date in legal history for celebrating her historic swearing-in and the doors it opened for women in the legal profession. An anonymous ethics complaint has been filed against William Lee, a distinguished attorney from WilmerHale, urging the Massachusetts attorney general's office to delve into the firm's interactions with Harvard University. Lee, who also served on Harvard's governing board for over a decade, and WilmerHale represented Harvard in its legal fight to maintain its race-based admissions policy, a battle ultimately lost at the Supreme Court. Additionally, the firm prepared former Harvard president Claudine Gay for a congressional hearing on antisemitism, which contributed to her resignation. Despite these incidents highlighting the connections between WilmerHale and Harvard, experts like Stephen Gillers from NYU suggest there's no apparent wrongdoing based solely on Lee's dual roles. The complaint alleges Lee may have breached conflict of interest regulations for public entities due to his position at Harvard and his involvement in its legal affairs, especially the affirmative action litigation. WilmerHale defended its legal representation of Harvard, stating Lee recused himself from any school decisions regarding the case, and Harvard, in a 2018 statement, claimed Lee received no payment for his work on the affirmative action case or any related revenue from the firm's billing to Harvard. Legal ethics professionals note that Lee's actions, including his decision to recuse himself, likely didn't violate any rules, though questions about compensation remain partially unanswered.Lee's role in WilmerHale's relationship with Harvard during the legal challenges to its admissions policies has drawn scrutiny, especially considering the firm's substantial legal fees from Harvard during this period. However, both Harvard and WilmerHale have maintained that Lee's involvement and the firm's compensation practices were ethical and transparent. Lee's significant contributions to both Harvard and WilmerHale, including his leadership in a pivotal lawsuit and his recusal from fiduciary duties related to the case, illustrate the complexities of navigating legal ethics in high-profile cases.WilmerHale's Work for Harvard Scrutinized in Ethics ComplaintThe parent company of Alex Jones' Infowars, Free Speech Systems LLC, amidst its bankruptcy proceedings, has obtained court approval to change its legal representation as it faces a pivotal phase that could lead to either a restructure or a systematic shutdown. This decision was sanctioned by Judge Christopher Lopez from the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, emphasizing that this switch in counsel should not decelerate the ongoing case. The approval came after stakeholders in the Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, filed under a special chapter for small businesses separate from Jones himself in 2022, consented to the replacement of lead attorney Ray Battaglia with the O'ConnorWechsler PLLC firm. This strategic move is part of broader efforts to navigate through bankruptcy while addressing over $1.5 billion in judgments against Jones and Infowars for defaming Sandy Hook victims' families. Jones had previously called the tragedy, where 26 were killed in Newtown, Connecticut, a hoax perpetrated by "crisis actors." The trustee overseeing the bankruptcy highlighted concerns about the viability of Free Speech Systems' reorganization and suggested that the court might need to consider converting the case to a Chapter 7 liquidation. This comes as litigation continues against PQPR Holdings, an Infowars vendor implicated in insider payments, suggesting an intricate web of financial and legal challenges as the company seeks to resolve its liabilities and navigate through bankruptcy.Infowars Parent Gets New Lawyer Amid Bankruptcy Case ConcernsIn a significant development in the ongoing opioid crisis litigation, Walmart Inc. achieved a partial victory when a federal judge dismissed two of the three charges against it brought by the US government. Chief Judge Colm F. Connolly of the US District Court for the District of Delaware ruled in favor of Walmart by dismissing charges that accused the retail giant of failing to report suspicious orders of controlled substances and not adhering to standard pharmacy practice in filling prescriptions. These dismissals were grounded in interpretations of the Controlled Substances Act, with Connolly stating that the act does not deem the failure to comply with reporting requirements or to adhere to standard pharmacy practices as unlawful, nor does it subject violators to civil penalties. However, Walmart's motion to dismiss a third charge was denied. This charge alleges that Walmart, through its agents and employees, knowingly dispensed controlled substances on prescriptions that were not issued for legitimate medical purposes or were outside the usual course of professional treatment. The decision to keep this charge intact was influenced by precedent from the Third Circuit, underscoring that knowledge of wrongdoing by any employee is attributable to the corporation itself. This mixed ruling leaves Walmart partially vindicated but still facing serious allegations related to its handling of opioid prescriptions, highlighting the complexities of legal responsibilities in the context of the opioid epidemic. Walmart has yet to comment on the judge's rulings.Walmart Scores Partial Win in Opioid Crisis Suit Brought by USLegislation aimed at compelling TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest the app or face a U.S. ban is gaining momentum in Congress, despite former President Donald Trump's recent remarks questioning the necessity of a ban. The bipartisan bill, led by House China Committee Chairman Mike Gallagher, seeks to prohibit app stores and ISPs like Apple and Google from hosting TikTok unless ByteDance divests it within six months. This legislative effort received a unanimous vote of approval from the Energy and Commerce Committee. Trump's shift in stance, from previously attempting to ban TikTok due to national security concerns to now suggesting Meta's Facebook poses a greater threat, introduces a complex variable for Republican lawmakers. FBI Director Christopher Wray and the annual report from the Office of the Director for National Intelligence have reiterated significant national security risks associated with TikTok, citing instances of China's alleged use of the platform to influence U.S. politics. TikTok has countered these allegations by denying any data sharing with Beijing and by investing over $1.5 billion to safeguard its U.S. operations, including a partnership with Oracle for oversight. The bill's future in the Senate remains uncertain, though some senators have expressed potential support. TikTok has mobilized efforts to oppose the bill, including enlisting Republican figures. Meanwhile, voices within Congress advocate for broader internet data protection measures rather than focusing solely on TikTok. This ongoing debate highlights the complexities of addressing cybersecurity, data privacy, and the influence of social media on public discourse.TikTok Divestment Bill Moves Ahead in House as Trump WaversIn my column, I delve into the urgent need for the United States to adopt a global minimum tax as a means to combat rampant corporate tax avoidance, a situation exacerbated by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017. Despite the act's promises, its aftermath has primarily seen the institutionalization of tax evasion practices rather than the anticipated economic growth. I argue that President Joe Biden's proposal for a global minimum tax of 21% on multinational earnings in each jurisdiction is a critical step towards halting the detrimental race to the bottom in corporate tax rates, thus leveling the playing field for U.S. businesses. My analysis points out that following the TCJA, many corporations have paid significantly less in taxes than intended, with a study showing an effective tax rate of just 14.1% for 342 of the most profitable companies. This starkly contrasts with the act's reduced rate of 21%, underscoring the policy's failure to curb tax evasion effectively. I contend that revisiting the advocacy for a global minimum tax is not only timely but essential for the integrity of the corporate tax framework, especially as Biden's administration's tax policies face uncertainty with the approaching presidential election.I emphasize the necessity of tax transparency in achieving equitable corporate taxation. This involves mandating standardized disclosures of taxes paid across jurisdictions and the specifics of tax benefits and credits received, thereby allowing tax authorities, the public, and stakeholders to scrutinize corporations' tax strategies more effectively.Further, I discuss the broader context of the global minimum tax initiative led by the G20 and OECD, which the U.S. has yet to join. This reluctance leaves the U.S. missing out on potential revenue from the global minimum tax rate of 15% agreed upon by over 140 countries, which could support critical domestic investments. I challenge the arguments against the global minimum tax, highlighting the benefits of discouraging harmful tax competition and simplifying compliance for multinational corporations. In sum, I tried through my column to underscore the imperative for the U.S. to embrace the global minimum tax as a robust solution to corporate tax avoidance, fostering fairness, equity, and the necessary fiscal resources to invest in the nation's future.US Must Adopt Global Minimum Tax to Fight Corporate Tax Avoidance Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

In this first full biography of former United States attorney general Janet Reno (1938–2016), Judith Hicks Stiehm describes the independent and unconventional life of a woman who grew up on a rural South Florida homestead and rose to occupy one of the top positions in the United States government, whose ethics and example served as inspiration for women in law and politics across the nation.         In Janet Reno: A Life (UP of Florida, 2023), Stiehm incorporates personal details from her full and exclusive access to family papers and photos, as well as inside information from Reno's own materials and interviews with over 40 of Reno's personal and professional acquaintances. Stiehm begins by tracing Reno's free-range childhood, her college years at Cornell and experience at Harvard Law School as one of 16 women in a class of over 500, the challenges she faced as a woman lawyer launching her career in 1960s Miami, and her 15 years as Miami-Dade state attorney.             In 1993, Reno was appointed to serve in Washington as United States attorney general in the Clinton administration, the first woman to occupy the position in the history of the nation. Stiehm tells how Reno engaged with the East Coast elite as an outsider, seen by many as outspoken and eccentric—yet scrupulous, uncompromising, and immune to influence. Stiehm explores the reasons behind Reno's decisions in cases she handled during her tenure, including the siege of the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas; Kenneth Starr's Whitewater investigation; the Oklahoma City bombing; and the Elián González controversy.             Janet Reno's life was an illustration to many that it is possible to hold high office while consistently speaking and acting on principle. This biography examines the guiding forces that shaped Reno's character, the trails blazed by Reno in her professional roles, and the lasting influence of Reno on American politics and society to this day. It's 2023, surely now people of color are correctly being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis right?  Nope.  They are still underdiagnosed.  We hear about it happening in low income countries, but it's happening right here in the USA. Rachel Alder was diagnosed barely 5 months ago, at age 26.  She was misdiagnosed until January 2023. Rachel was born before newborn screening could detect CF. And, because not all mutations are under represented in testing, her diagnosis would still most likely have been missed. We have to change this.Rachel Alder today, or Rae as she likes to be called has been an advocate her entire life. Rachel, who is African American. It is still unbelievable to those of us advocating and raising awareness about the disparity in diagnosis in people of color, it is still happening.  As a reminder, anyone, regardless of race can be diagnosis with cystic fibrosis.  The number of people diagnosed with CF is certainly higher than is what currently reported.  Rae is a transracial adoptee, which means she was adopted by parents who are a different race.  Rae identifies as queer, and a full time CF Warrior. In the beginning of her career, she worked on diversity victim advocacy with survivors of sexual assault, human trafficking, and domestic violence. After her January CF diagnosis, she started focusing on patient advocacy, and specifically on health equity. Rae herself overcame racial bias, health disparity and a decline in her own health until her diagnosis.National Organization for African American's with cystic fibrosis: https://noaacf.orgChildren's Organ Transplant Association: https://cota.orgBonnell Foundation CF Master Class: https://cfmasterclass.orgBonnell Foundation website: https://thebonnellfoundation.orgEmail: thebonnellfoundation@gmail.com Thanks to our sponsors:Vertex:  https://www.vrtx.comGenentech: https://www.gene.comViatris: https://www.viatris.com/enInformation about Institute for Economic and Clinically Review (ICER): https://www.engagecf.org

This week on the Mark Levin Show, we need Republican District Attorneys and Attorneys General to do to Democrats what they are doing to Republicans now, scour state statutes and think of new ways to approach them in order to go after Biden. There are no actual crimes or federal offenses being alleged against Donald Trump in his indictment by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg. There must be an underlying crime that is being covered up by a bookkeeping error to make it a felony rather than a misdemeanor, and Trump has been charged with no underlying crimes. The communist Chinese government paid for efforts to re-elect Bill Clinton as president in 1996 and Barack Obama among other Democrat campaigns according to court reports. Clinton was never charged or investigated by the DOJ under Janet Reno despite China pouring millions and millions of dollars into the Clinton campaigns and the DNC. Today, Donald Trump gets indicted for phony business crimes by Democrat DA Alvin Bragg. Both the DOJ and the FEC found no crime or any reporting violations, but Bragg has decided to charge Trump under a state law despite being guilty of any state crime as well. We vote to elect politicians who make our streets more dangerous - take our property from us, and we shake our heads. This is just the Democrats once again interfering in an election and setting a precedent. We need Republican attorneys to pursue cases against Joe Biden and his administration because they have committed actual crimes. Also, Democrats don't talk about individualism or property rights because they don't believe in them, especially unalienable rights. This is why they embrace the 1619 projects and efforts to destroy our economic system and unity. There's a lot of news happening today. I'll attempt to deal with much of it... I'll call on Lisa Graves today... She's my go-to legal expert, as she served in a number of capacities within the US Dept of Justice, including as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for nominations under both Janet Reno and John Ashcroft... She'll weigh in on the Supreme Court's hearing yesterday on the future of Affirmative Action, plus two rulings they handed down today (Lindsey Graham must testify in GA; Trump slithers out of having to turn over his tax returns, again, at least for now). The victims of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas HS shooting in Parkland get to tell the murderer exactly what they think of him today before he's officially sentenced to 36 life sentences with no parole. Elon Musk is driving away tons of Tweeters from Twitter. Israel is voting in its 5th election in four years and could return Netanyahu to power. And it's November! Voting ends in seven days, and open enrollment for Obamacare through the ACA has begun at healthcare.gov. I think that's enough to get us started....

It's Wednesday, September 14th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark India Supreme Court orders gov't to reveal info on persecution of Christians On September 1, India's Supreme Court ordered the government to provide details on reported attacks against Christians in the country. Christian groups in India have been calling for an end to the violence after believers suffered over 500 attacks just last year. Open Doors spokesperson Rinzen Baleng welcomed the court order.  He said, “Considering the government's complete denial of the rising assaults on Christians in India, the Supreme Court's order for further verification of the matter is a positive step. … It will help establish that these assaults are not just limited to a few individuals, but against the larger Christian community.” British March for Life draws 7,000 The March for Life in the United Kingdom held its largest event ever this month. At least 7,000 people joined the march in London. Pro-lifers held banners which said “10 million too many,” referencing the number of babies murdered in the womb in England and Wales since abortion was legalized in 1967. Catherine Robinson with Right To Life U.K. said, “It's so encouraging to attend the march and see the number of people attending growing so rapidly, especially in terms of all the young people who recognize abortion for what it is.” Proverbs 31:8 commands, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Hungary approves anti-abortion rule Meanwhile in Hungary, the eastern European country approved its first anti-abortion rule since 1956. Hungary legalized abortion nearly 70 years ago under socialist rule. Since then, over six million babies have been murdered in the womb. In 2011, Hungary amended its constitution to say, “the life of a fetus will be protected from conception.” However, abortion is still legal. The new rule issued Monday requires abortionists to give mothers seeking an abortion “a clearly identifiable indication of fetal vital signs.” Biden brags about reducing inflation as inflation goes up President Joe Biden is being slammed for a White House celebration of the Democrats' Inflation Reduction Act Tuesday, the same day higher-than-expected inflation in August was announced, report Fox News. Listen to his claim on the White House lawn yesterday. BIDEN: “Exactly four weeks ago today, I signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law, the single most important legislation passed in the Congress to combat inflation, and one of the most significant laws in our nation's history, in my view.” It was so bad that Fox News host Neil Cavuto cut in with some facts which were off message for the White House. BIDEN: “For years, so many of us have been trying to fix this problem. But for years, Big Pharma blocked Medicare from negotiating lower drug practices … prices.” CAVUTO:  “Alright, I do not want to be a party crasher, but we interrupt this celebration for a hard, cold dose of reality.  Stocks tanking because inflation is accelerating. The very inflation that the President said he's made great progress addressing, heralding his Inflation Reduction Act as the boon for the economy that we didn't see in a key number out earlier today.” Biden's strange time reference Later, on the White House lawn Tuesday, President Biden made a weird time reference. He said he became a senator 720 years ago. Listen. BIDEN:  “How long we've been fighting Pharma? How long have we been taking on these interests?  From the time I got to the Senate 720 years ago. (crowd laughs at the president) I'm serious. Think about it.” For the record, Biden became a senator in 1972 at the age of 29.  That would be 50 years ago, not 720.  Perhaps the president was making a self-deprecating joke about his age. Or perhaps it's another data point in his cognitive decline. Former Independent Counsel Ken Starr died Ken Starr, the independent counsel who headed the investigation that led to the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton, died Tuesday after a lengthy illness, reports Fox News. He was 76. Starr was initially appointed to investigate the suicide of deputy White House counsel Vince Foster and the Whitewater real estate investments of Clinton. The investigation was expanded to include suspected perjury about Clinton's sexual activity with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern. STARR: “When the information came to us that the President of the United States may have been in the process of committing perjury, obstructing justice, we went to the Attorney General of the United States, Janet Reno. She agreed. So, the rest is all history.” After more than four years of investigation, Starr filed the Starr Report, which alleged that Clinton lied about the existence of the affair during a sworn deposition. In 2018, he released a book entitled Contempt: A Memoir of the Clinton Investigation. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ken Starr can be made to: Alliance Defending Freedom, 15100 N. 90th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85260. New York court shut down Christian adoption agency Last Wednesday, a U.S. federal district court ruled that the state of New York cannot shut down a Christian adoption agency for its beliefs. New Hope Family Services has been involved in litigation since 2018. New York's Office of Children and Family Services has tried to force the agency to offer adoption services to homosexual couples and unmarried heterosexual couples who are living in sin. Alliance Defending Freedom represented New Hope in court.  ADF Senior Counsel Roger Brooks said, “The court's decision is great news for children waiting to be adopted. … New Hope is a private, religious ministry that doesn't take a dime from the government. Shutting down an adoption provider for its religious beliefs … benefits no one—certainly not children.” Franklin Graham preaches to 17,000 in Mongolia And finally, hundreds of Mongolian churches gathered for a large-scale evangelistic event for the first time in the eastern Asian nation's history last Saturday. Evangelist Franklin Graham preached at the historic two-night Festival of Hope attended by over 17,000 people. GRAHAM: “Tonight, I am going to give you an opportunity to place your faith and trust in God's Son, Jesus Christ. (Mongolian translation)  The Bible tells us we've have all sinned. (Mongolian translation)  That our sins separate us from God. (Mongolian translation)” Over half of Mongolia is Buddhist, and most have not heard the Gospel before. Since the 1990s, an estimated 40,000 Mongolians have converted to Christianity, representing about 2% of the population. Isaiah 9:7 says of Christ, “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, September 14th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. We started out the show with what it might look like if Janet Reno saved a famous monkey, hit you with some Hank Hill cover tunes, and Anthony educated us all on the Booty Playlist. We challenged our early listeners to be spontaneous, and one brave man rose to the challenge. We talked about The Jerk Hut pop-up in Larkinville, Cass quizzed Anthony on some dating questions, and Cass complains about being un-invited on a family trip. Ill-Advised news had a sex toy theft and a scooter doing tons of damage, and we get to the bottom of how two bowls stuck together captivated the internet this week.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
