Send us a text Romans 8 ends with one of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture: Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. But that leads to a deep and pressing question that Romans 9–11 seeks to answer: If God is faithful, what do we make of Israel's rejection of their Messiah? These three chapters are the theological backbone of Christian assurance, affirming the reliability of God's promises and character. The Mystery Revealed (v.25)Paul does not want the Gentile believers to be ignorant or arrogant."Mystery" = a divine truth now revealed: Israel has experienced a partial and temporary hardening until the full number of Gentiles come in.God's redemptive plan is unfolding."All Israel Will Be Saved" (v.26–27)Likely refers to ethnic Israel as a whole, not every individual or the Church.Paul cites Isaiah and Jeremiah to show that this is covenantal fulfillment.A future generation of Israel will turn to Christ at His return.God's Faithfulness and Mercy (v.28–29)Dual perspective:Enemies of the gospel for the sake of the Gentiles.Beloved because of the patriarchs."The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."The Paradox of Disobedience and Mercy (v.30–32)Disobedience of Israel led to mercy for the Gentiles.Mercy shown to Gentiles will one day provoke mercy toward Israel.God allows all to be bound over to disobedience so that He may have mercy on all.No one earns salvation; all receive it through grace.Three Key Claims of Paul:Israel's hardening is partial – a remnant remains.Israel's hardening is temporary – it will end.All Israel will be saved – pointing to a future collective turning.Paul sees history as a tapestry, not a straight line. Even resistance and disobedience serve the larger purpose of showcasing God's mercy. Conclusion:God has not abandoned Israel, and He will not abandon us.If God remains faithful to Israel despite their failings, He will surely remain faithful to all who trust in Christ. The promises begun with Abraham will be fulfilled in Christ.Romans 11:25–36 is not just about Israel—it is about the steadfast mercy of God."For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen." The famous battle of the inventors: Thomas Edison vs Nikola Tesla. These two historic innovators have been pitted against each other for quite some time in the public eye. Edison has been portrayed as the “bad guy” while Tesla has taken on the role as the “good guy." What if there truly was no rivalry between them? What if they both had respect and admiration for one another? Kelly is going to embark on a journey investigating the lives of both Mr. Edison and Mr. Tesla, getting to know each man on a deeper soul level. During this multi-part podcast series Kelly will be interviewing experts on both inventors to learn more about them from historical documentation and written records. She will also be connecting with each of their consciousness and channeling information to reveal new revelations and insight into the true nature of their history together. In Part 1, the life of Thomas Edison is investigated from a tangible, historical perspective. Kelly chats with Dr. Paul Israel who has made the study of American invention and innovation his specialty. He is the Director and General Editor of the Thomas A. Edison Papers at Rutgers University. The Edison Papers team has been editing and publishing the 5 million pages of documents that chronicle the extraordinary life and achievements of Thomas Alva Edison. These have remained hidden and inaccessible to members of the general public, until now and they are turning this treasure trove into a premier educational and research resource. The documents include the writings, drawings, and business records of Edison. Paul is also the author of numerous books on the life and inventions of Mr. Edison. Paul chats with Kelly about Edison's fascinating evolution from a blue collar, self-educated, entrepreneurial upbringing to his rise as the Wizard of Menlo Park. Paul discusses Edison's unique skill for taking ideas and turning them into tangible creation, which is where he and Tesla differed. Paul also shares the truth about their relationship and how their alleged rivalry was concocted by Tesla enthusiasts and the underdog social revolution of modern times. Paul also chats with Kelly about Edison's curiosity about spiritualism and how that tied into some of his ideas and work.Thomas A. Thomas Edison was one of history's greatest inventors, who gave the world not only electric light but other landmark innovations in sound recording and moving pictures. He accumulated more patents in his lifetime than any other, and filled over 4000 notebooks with his work. So, how did this ordinary, home-schooled boy from the American mid-West overcome ill-health and hearing loss to change the world? To what extent was he a lone genius, and how much did he rely on the work of others? This is A Short History of Thomas Edison. Written by Dan Smith. It's time to set the record straight: Thomas Edison's greatest achievement was not the lightbulb. In fact, he wasn't even the first to invent it. The unrecognized master stroke of Edison was he brought together some of the brightest minds to collaborate, exchange ideas, and work in creative ways to change the world as we knew it. In the first episode of Teamistry, host Gabriela Cowperthwaite journeys to late-19th century Menlo Park, where a team of unsung heroes is hard at work setting up an electricity grid that could light up a New York city block. There's a lot at stake: financial ruin, countless hours of labor, and Edison's very reputation. We hear from David Burkus, author of The Myths of Creativity and Jill Jonnes, author of Empires of Light. We also get the insights of Robert Friedel, University of Maryland history professor and coauthor of Edison's Electric Light, Kathleen Carlucci, Director of the Thomas Edison Center, and Paul Israel, Director of the Thomas Edison Papers at Rutgers University.Teamistry is an original podcast from Atlassian. One of the most influential American inventors of all time, Thomas Alva Edison (1847–1931) is responsible for the creation of several devices that shaped the face of modern technology. Most famous for his invention of the first practical light bulb, Edison was also a shrewd businessman who bridged the gap between invention and large-scale manufacturing. Possibly the single most important figure of the Second Industrial Revolution, Edison’s vast network of corporate contacts ensured that his name was forever cemented in history as the archetypal American scientist. Paul Israel is a historian of technology who serves as the Director and General Editor of the multi-volume documentary edition of the Thomas Edison Papers at Rutgers University. He joins us on Culture Insight to share his insight into the life and work of Thomas Alva Edison.
"An inventor needs enemies." These are the words of the man who brought electricity into the home, Thomas Edison. While many will argue the particulars of what he invented, Edison was perhaps the most influential man in technology during the turn of the century. This week, Brent and Ryan talk to Dr. Paul Israel, the Director and General Editor of the Edison Papers at Rutgers University. They explore the competitive nature of the "Wizard of Menlo Park," and how this led him to be involved in the use of electricity for capital punishment. Show notes are on Ripleys.com.
