Peter Aaron - Chrome Crank, Sand In The Face & Sluggo - in conversation with David Eastaugh Hardcore punk bass player from Cincinnati, Ohio is a former member of Sand In The Face (New Jersey), Sluggo (2) (in 1984 known as Peter Wegele) is the singer and guitarist of New York band the Chrome Cranks. He and another Cincinnati scenester, guitarist William Weber, started the group in 1988, before moving to Manhattan in 1992. The band went on to release eight albums, appear on MTV, contribute to several movie soundtracks, and tour Europe, the US, and Canada repeatedly.

Chris Heath is a writer for The Atlantic, GQ and Vanity Fair, and author of several books. Russell Young is a visual artist with a background in music photography, sleeve design and video directing. Both got their professional start with Jamming! in the early 1980s.Thirty-five years after its demise, Russell and Chris joined Jamming!'s former publisher/editor Tony Fletcher in New York City, where all three have lived at one time or another, for a long-overdue reunion. In 2009, Peter Aaron, an architectural photographer, and Brooke Allen, author and professor, went on vacation with their children to Syria. Brooke wrote a book about their experience called “The Other Side of the Mirror: An American Travels Through Syria” (Paul Dry Books). Within 2 years of their trip, civil war broke out and many of the landmarks that Peter had photographed were damaged or destroyed. His photographs—now a precious documentation of Syria’s vanishing history and culture—are currently on exhibit at the Venice Biennale and can be seen in a new book called “Syria Before the Deluge.” In this episode of “Leonard Lopate at Large,” Brooke and Peter describe the many ways that the Syria they saw no longer exists.
