This week we talked to the legendary musician Bob Bert of Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Lydia Lunch Retrovirus & Bewitched, who picked the equally legendary Danny Fields documentary, Danny Says, to discuss. We talk about Danny's trials with the bands he loved and discovered (including The Stooges, MC5, Jonathan Richman & The Ramones); the notion of chance meetings in art; Danny breaking the news of John Lennon saying ‘The Beatles are bigger than Jesus Christ' and the aftermath he created for them; changing a guitar string without stopping playing a song; 16 Magazine; Bob's early shows seeing Suicide, Wayne County, Patti Smith, New York Dolls & Television; the greatness of Dead Moon & The Scientists; WFMU; shoplifting MC5 records; the Super 8mm punk document Blank Generation; how he joined both Sonic Youth & Pussy Galore; Rock Scene magazine, the genesis of the Pussy Galore drum set he built and how it hurts to play it, his process with publishing BB Gun Magazine, doing drugs and seeing Pink Floyd, unsung NYC band heroes, planning out your whole week around rock shows, Max's Kansas City and why we haven't gotten a Jonathan Richman documentary yet!So, let's roll our eyes along with the singular force that changed music forever on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.BOB BERT:https://goner-records.com/products/im-just-drummer-bob-bert-book-hozacInstagram: @therealbobbertLIMITED EDITION REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE SHIRT:revolutionspermovie.bandcamp.comREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. SAN ONOFRE-At home with Eric Mingus You, son of the underdog!
SAN ONOFRE-Peter Aaron interviú The Chrome Cranks: Not bad for a bunch of cranky old farts, huh, Peter? Bueno, Alien Tóxico, let's all move to Cincinnati. Uuuuuuuuuuuu. Prósimos chous del onofrimmo: 9 marzo Fajardo; 25 marzo El Relevo Alemán; 26 abril Price Attack + Tout Bleu; 27 mayo Atomizador + Salva Alambre; junio...
Peter Aaron - Chrome Crank, Sand In The Face & Sluggo - in conversation with David Eastaugh Hardcore punk bass player from Cincinnati, Ohio is a former member of Sand In The Face (New Jersey), Sluggo (2) (in 1984 known as Peter Wegele) is the singer and guitarist of New York band the Chrome Cranks. He and another Cincinnati scenester, guitarist William Weber, started the group in 1988, before moving to Manhattan in 1992. The band went on to release eight albums, appear on MTV, contribute to several movie soundtracks, and tour Europe, the US, and Canada repeatedly.
Bob Bert was part of a stellar generation that got to see the likes of The Talking Heads, The Cramps, The Gun Club, Ramones, just to name a few, come up in the mid/late 70s New York. Bert witnessed some of the most influential bands, but also participated in some of the most influential bands of his generation. That being Sonic Youth in the early/mid 80's. I can honestly say without a shred of doubt, that Sonic Youth are one of my favorite groups, so the honor and privilege to speak to this legend was simply mind blowing! After Sonic Youth, Bert went on to participate in groups such as Pussy Galore, Bewitched, Chrome Cranks and Lydia Lunch. As of late, Bert has been in playing in Lydia Lunch Retrovirus and has recently written a novel! Continuing on Sir Francis Bacon's New Organon (1620). We cover more of Bacon's "idols" and how Bacon divides religion from science (and what this means politically). We then move on to book 2, including Bacon's novel update of the term "form," and take a look at Bacon's method of doing science by filling out tables before actually doing experiments. Peter started in hardcore punk and used the blues to add depth for his band the Chrome Cranks, which released four studio albums and a live album in the mid-1990s, then another in 2012. Since then he's been a music journalist and author, writing about the Ramones, the Band, and others, with occasional musical projects. We discuss his new single "Bomb Train Blues" (2018) with the band Young Skulls, Chrome Cranks tracks "Dark Room" from Chrome Cranks (1994), and "Rubber Rat" from Ain’t No Lies in Blood (2012). We conclude by listening to "Purge 4" from Purges by Peter Aaron and Brian Chase (2016). Intro/outro: "Hot Blonde Cocktail" by the Chrome Cranks from Love in Exile (1997). I'm few weeks late this time, but hopefully this selection of jams will be worth the wait! September brings the great news that Memphis weirdo blues rockers the Grifters have reissued their classic 1994 LP, Crappin' You Negative. This hot mess of ugly distortion, bent guitar duels, and loose-limbed grooves might be a bit dated, but it still bleeds passion and grit through the speakers like it did back then. I was lucky enough to see them on a reunion tour last year, and the addition of age, wisdom, and increased precision made them even more powerful. Here's tp the hope that they make more music!Episode #55 of Random Old Records starts off with the Grifters aptly enough, then goes all over the map. You'll hear an absolute jangle-pop earworm from Paperhead bassist Peter Stringer-Hye, a classic Aussie punk jam from Kim Salmon and The Scientists, a brand-new song from Rangers, and a gross, Flipper-lovin' punk plod from Cleveland's Rubber Mate. Finally, in honor of my recent viewing of the Amphetamine Reptile/Tom Hazelmyer documentary The Color Of Noise, you get a ferocious track from Halo Of Flies, and like-minded jams from Laughing Hyenas and Chrome Cranks. As always, thanks for listening! I will be back in a few weeks, closer to a regular schedule I hope, with episode #56. This one will be a special "5-10-15-20" episode where I hop in the time machine to re-visit songs from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago! 2001 and 1996 were some strange and interesting times, for sure!Random Old Records #55Released 09/18/2016DOWNLOAD HERE1.
