Australia is one of 17 "megadiverse" countries that account for 70% of Earth's biodiversity. However, Australia is unique in having the highest mammalian extinction rate in the world. That makes conservation on the island continent, where most of the wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth, all the more urgent. Conservation and environmental scientists have come out against the Australian federal government's claim that it's "on track" to meet most of its targets under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework agreed upon at the U.N. biodiversity summit in 2022. This week on the Mongabay Newscast, Euan Ritchie, a professor of wildlife ecology and conservation at Australia's Deakin University, and a councilor with the Biodiversity Council, an academic alliance in the country, argues why conservationists say the Australian government is failing its commitments. "The short answer, unfortunately, is that Australia is doing terribly in terms of honoring its international obligations to meet those targets in the agreement. If we look at the number of threatened species in Australia, it's more than 2,200 now, and that list continues to increase," Ritchie says. Despite being a relatively wealthy nation by gross domestic product per capita, Australia funds conservation at a diminutive scale compared to other industrialized countries. The latest annual budget allocates 0.06% of federal spending to nature. Ritchie and some 60 fellow experts suggest that it would only take about 1% of the federal budget to save most threatened species and restore soils and rivers. In 2024, the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists published its findings, which took six years to complete. The Biodiversity Council has separately found that around 95% of Australians surveyed would support increased spending on the environment. "Essentially, the federal government is ignoring a majority of Australians by not doing that," Ritchie says. He argues the money to fund conservation already exists — or at least could easily exist by reducing subsidies for harmful industries (such as the fossil fuel industry), which currently amount to around A$26 billion ($19 billion) a year. Separately, a 25% tax on liquefied natural gas exports could generate A$17 billion ($12 billion) a year, a move nationwide polling suggests is supported by 70% of Australians. Despite the perceived strong public support, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has ruled out a 25% tax on gas exports for the time being, which Ritchie says is very hard to understand, pointing to countries like Norway, which built its own sovereign wealth fund off similar measures. As of this writing, the Australian government has lost about A$70 billion ($50 billion) in revenue it could have collected had it taxed these resources, according to an online tracker by the Australia Institute, an independent think tank. "We could bring in tens of billions of dollars in additional revenue if we taxed the resources that we are giving away, essentially in many cases for free," Ritchie says. Instead of increasing direct conservation funding, the Australian government intends to close the gap by launching a "Nature Repair Market," a voluntary biodiversity offset scheme. It's essentially a way for industry and private investors to pay for the damage they cause. Research indicates this is unlikely to protect endangered wildlife and biodiversity without taxpayer funding. Other researchers from the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales have also weighed in, explaining that a biodiversity market is unlikely to work. Ritchie says this is problematic for a number of other reasons, ranging from the complexity of biodiversity itself, to the way the government intends to measure environmental impacts from various projects. Currently, the national environmental standards in the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC) doesn't "account for cumulative impacts," Ritchie says. "So if you imagine that you're a threatened species and you're widely distributed … Individual projects are not being assessed in relation to other projects that may also impact on that same species," he says. Just 50 days after the Cross…at Pentecost…the early church numbering about 120, huddled in an upper room in Jerusalem, received the empowering Holy Spirit, for the purpose of proclaiming Christ to the lost world around them. But, the world hates the gospel and reacts to muffle the voice of the believer—and still does so today. However, there is something so much bigger, so much more powerful, happening in the grand story! The early Jerusalem believers understood it and drew strength from it. And, they often found it in a moment of gathered prayer…the Prayer Meeting! The Sovereign Authority of God…His Word…His Plan…His Power…available to the early church, remains for us today: for the empowering of our ministries, mission, and witness…and can be found in our own Prayer Meetings!

Jesus heals, but He also calls us to go. In this message from Matthew 9 and 10, we see Jesus open blind eyes, heal the hurting, and remind us that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. But the miracle is not the end of the story, it is the beginning of the mission. The same Jesus who rescues us also sends us. The harvest is plentiful, the laborers are few, and faith was never meant to stay comfortable. Following Jesus means moving from being rescued to becoming part of the rescue team. Pray boldly. Choose faith over fear. If the tomb is empty, anything is possible. It's well known that careers in wildlife, conservation, and the environment are incredibly competitive. In fact, it's not uncommon for a job to have hundreds of applicants. So you might be surprised to hear that there are jobs that are difficult for employers to fill. Yes, difficult! (insert mind blown emoji here). To be honest, I was surprised too. Today's episode of the Fancy Scientist podcast is inspired by this recent insight, and it came about through a new connection on LinkedIn. Dr. Patrick Raney, the Director of Conservation Programs in the Great Lakes Atlantic region of Ducks Unlimited, and I were messaging each other about conservation jobs, and he mentioned that it had actually been difficult for him to find qualified applicants to fill certain positions Given that so many people are struggling to get jobs, I immediately thought that this was wonderful news and that I needed to have him on the podcast to learn more and help those in need.As the Director of Conservation Programs in the Great Lakes Atlantic region of Ducks Unlimited, Patrick leads wetland restoration and mitigation efforts to restore habitat, protect biodiversity, and ensure that long-term conservation wins for both wildlife and communities. In this episode, you'll learn about Patrick's winding career path to Ducks Unlimited and early interest in conservation. We also talk a lot about what I am now calling “wildlife adjacent careers,” that is, careers that are related to wildlife work, but are not necessarily directly involved in research. This includes fields that you might not think of when it comes to helping wildlife, in this case, careers in engineering that rebuild wetland habitats. Patrick initially trained as a plant biologist and started his journey at the early age of 16 with a summer camp job that he demanded (yes, demanded!). It's a great story that you won't want to miss. In it, he demonstrates his unstoppable attitude towards going after your wildlife career, which is CRITICAL in this field. We also follow his career progression through various roles in environmental science and research.We talk in-depth about Patrick's work at Ducks Unlimited, how he uses different strategies to support wetland species, and especially ducks. You'll learn how Ducks Unlimited approaches wetland conservation, working with stakeholders, and achieving results that are a win-win for wildlife and partners. Throughout the conversation, Patrick offers a lot of valuable advice for early professionals in wildlife careers. We cover the importance of volunteering and building experience, and that a little goes a long way, as well as the value of transferable skills from non-wildlife jobs in environmental careers. Patrick shares advice on the importance of networking and even making proactive job applications. He mentions that he occasionally hires candidates who reach out directly, even if there are no immediate positions available! Given that we met each other over LinkedIn, we also go into the importance of this platform, which I have become obsessed with recently. Ever since I took some training and developed my own LinkedIn for Wildlife Careers Masterclass, I have been using and loving LinkedIn. He talks about how he believes it is a powerful career tool, and uses it for job recruitment offering you tips on how you can use LinkedIn to your advantage.If you're interested in wildlife careers, you're going to get a lot of specific and concrete advice on how to approach your career, as well as creative ideas to think differently than others to set yourself apart. A primary source for this account is the extensive records of the Immigrant Savings Bank. Unlike other immigrant records, such as those from Castle Garden and early Ellis Island, which were lost to fire, these "test books" captured detailed biographical information—including names, occupations, mother's maiden names, family members, and arrival details—used as a security measure in the absence of photo IDs. This data enabled the author to trace individual immigrant stories. The narrative begins with the devastating Great Potato Famine in Ireland, caused by a fungus that thrived in the cool, damp climate, destroying the staple crop on which much of the population depended. Fleeing starvation, many, often the strongest, endured perilous voyages. They frequently traveled through Liverpool, England, to access cheaper passage, only to face overcrowded and disease-ridden "coffin ships" across the Atlantic, where typhus and cholera were common. Arrival in New York was typically unceremonious, with immigrants disembarking directly onto docks before Castle Garden became a central reception point. Upon arrival, many Irish immigrants, like Bartholomew O'Donnell, initially found work as day laborers, often in physically demanding construction jobs in impoverished areas such as Five Points and its infamous Old Brewery. They also faced significant prejudice rooted in their Catholicism and racial stereotypes, exemplified by "no Irish need apply" notices and movements like the Know Nothing Party. Despite these challenges, the Irish displayed remarkable ambition, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit. They were diligent savers, motivated by the psychological scars of the famine to establish emergency funds in banks. The book provides numerous examples of their success: Captain James Kavanagh of the 69th Regiment (Irish Brigade) fought heroically in the Civil War, later finding a civil service position. The Lynches saved for a decade before moving west to become successful farmers in Minnesota, founding Irish communities. The Ruddics, after missing the gold rush in California, became landlords and real estate investors in San Francisco. Michael Quigley built a thriving boat business in New York Harbor, which his son Bill Quigley successfully continued. Tailor George Fox rose to prominence through savvy marketing, even creating clothes for figures like President Millard Fillmore. Most notably, Michael Failen, a billiards champion, and his son-in-law Hugh Colander patented an improved pool table cushion, mass-produced their high-quality tables, and became wealthy, even supplying President Ulysses S. Grant with a custom table. Anbinder's most significant discovery was the extent to which these famine Irish, often portrayed as permanently stuck in low-wage jobs, actively overcame discrimination and lack of education to climb the socioeconomic ladder through their immense resourcefulness and entrepreneurial drive. 1859 FIVE POINTS
