Label: Boardwalk 177Year: 1983Condition: MPrice: $10.00From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy, in its original factory sleeve. Seems strange that in the midst of the Rockabilly revival of the early 1980s this terrific number didn't do better than it did. It's a classic... irresistable! Note: This beautiful 45 record has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)
Send us a textScott Johnson primarily lives in Boulder with his wife and two kids, but the family also owns a house in New Orleans, located on North Rampart Street. Over a decade ago, he played a gig and mentioned that he would have loved to learn how to play the sousaphone, as at the time he played upright and electric bass. A trumpet player and friend playing the gig with him said that he would help Johnson learn the ropes. This motivated Johnson to teach himself the instrument, and feeling comfortable playing New Orleans jazz, he gathered friends of his to form a band to play that jazz: the Rampart Street Stompers, a name that tributes his house. The band focuses on traditional New Orleans jazz from the 1920s and '30s, from Louis Armstrong to Louis Prima, and the lineup has changed slightly over the years to home in on that particular sound. The current lineup consists of Johnson as band leader, sousaphone player, and vocalist; Fred Renken on trumpet; Fred Rollenhagen on trombone; Michael Bocim on clarinet; Al Scholl on banjo and guitar; Steve Balgooyen on drums; and Corinne Johnson, Scott's daughter, as a vocalist. Other members have included Josh Schnabel on banjo and ukulele, Ellie Brown on vocals, and Justin Peterson on trumpet. Johnson calls the band a middle ground between Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Tuba Skinny, the latter of whom Johnson credits with inspiring the band in the first place. Also, stay tuned to hear responses from Al Jardine of The Beach Boys to questions about that band's time at Caribou Ranch in Nederland! Louisiana was the location for the very first Tarzan movie, back in 1917 when actor Elmo Lincoln swung from the trees near Morgan City where the Atchafalaya Swamp played the role of Africa. Louisiana has produced many more settings including for the early burlesque comedians Abbott and Costello whose rocket flight to mars misfired and they landed in New Orleans where the day happened to be Mardi Gras and they mistook the street maskers for martians. Alfred Richard, a film critic whose gigs include a weekly appearance of WWL TV's morning news and frequent appearance on WYES TV's “Steppin' Out” joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with producer Kelly Massicot, to talk about the local movie scene. We will also hear the podcast staff's comments on "Barbie" and, as a bonus, Richard's experience in the role of “Chocolate Thunder” as one of the longtime member of the 610 Stompers. It is fun conversation worthy of a movie.

Today's podcast features track and speed coach, Chris Korfist. Chris has been a high school coach in track and football for 3 decades with close to 100 All-State athletes. He is currently the sprints coach at Homewood Flossmoor high school in Chicago, owns the "Slow Guy Speed School”, and has consulted with professional sports teams all over the world, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, and Rugby League. Chris has been a favorite podcast guest on this show and is constantly evolving and innovating his methods. Sprinting is a simple, yet complex topic, and one that requires a continual analysis of mechanics, exercises and training models. There are many ways to train athletes, and with this in mind, it's important to understand the “first principles” of any training system. With many first principles taken from the brilliance of the “DB Hammer” training ideals, Chris has steadily evolved his training system, year over year, to the place where it is today. This past season, Homewood Flossmoor won the Illinois state track championship, and won the 4x100m and 4x200m dashes on their way to the title. Chris's adjustments to his speed training models worked well, with some athletes chopping off a second or more off of their 200m times from the previous year. On the podcast today, Chris starts by talking about his mental training approach, and some unique mental training elements of this past year's team. He then gets into the main changes he utilized this past training year, including reducing the speed endurance component of the work, and replacing it with some potent “AN2” bracket (30-40 second) specialized training for the sprints. Chris also goes into how he would specialize the exercises for sprinters of different archetypes (stompers vs. slicers) and much more. They got national attention thru MTV videos and touring with some of the top grossing acts of the time. This is a great opportunity to catch up with someone who was vital in creating the Boston music scene.

In this week's episode we're showcasing the country roots of revered Memphis-born rocker Eddie Bond: digging into Bond's back catalogue for some forgotten hard country magic and featuring a self-released LP from the 70s in tandem - "Caution: Eddie Bond Music Is Contagious". Bond's early influences were undoubtedly country and his time with The Snearly Ranch Boys before forming his own band The Stompers cemented those influences. Initially The Stompers themselves were essentially a country and western band with rockabilly overtones, taking in some legendary talent by the mid 50s including iconic steel guitarist John Hughey. But when rock 'n' roll hit Eddie Bond jumped on board, recording a slew of rockers (mostly for Mercury) between 1955-1957. Rediscovered twenty years later in the midst of the European rockabilly revival, Bond remains mostly remembered today for those rockabilly cuts but this week we're showcasing the hard country side this week of one of the few rockabillies actually born and bred in The Home Of The Blues.

Wiffleball teams are a dime-a-dozen, but Wiffleball franchises - wiffleball teams that outlive their initial players - are far more rare, but perhaps becoming more common as competitive Wiffleball continues to build its own history. Paul & Tim look at their experiences with the Stompers as a starting to point to discuss the developing concept of wiffleball "franchises".
Louisiana's movie business is rebounding and Alfred Richard knows the scene from inside and out – as a fan and as a participant. Richard, whose movie comments are heard weekly on New Orleans stations WWL-TV Ch. 4 and periodically as a special guest on public television WYES Ch. 12's "Steppin' Out" program, joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot for a fun talk about the movies. Oh yes, we will also hear about his role as “Chocolate Thunder” as part of the “610 Stompers” dancing group, whose whole motto is “Ordinary Men; Extraordinary Moves.”
