The Pin Tool Podcast | Pottery | Ceramics | Small Business

Welcome back to The Pin Tool Podcast, where we dive deep into the craft, philosophy, and business of making pottery that matters. I'm your host, Alford Wayman, and today, we're discussing being overwhelmed. I don't have it all figured out. Most days, I'm just like you, swimming through resistance, elbowing my way through the chaos, and trying to remember why I started making pots in the first place. Overwhelm doesn't mean you're broken. It just means you care. The hard part is deciding what to care about first. Seth Godin Books mentioned: The Practice. What does it sound like when you change your mind? That's the name of the book Seth Godin was about to publish when James interviewed him. He only printed 5,500 copies. And he's not printing anymore. He doesn't view a book as just pages surrounded by two covers. He makes a 3-dimensional object that's beautiful to look at and read.“It's not new,” he said on my podcast. “It's the best of the last four years of my work. And it's illustrated with hundreds of photos by Thomas Hawk, who's the most prolific and talented internet photographer.”The book weighs 18 pounds. And it's 800 pages long.I asked him about art and marketing… and he told me about life.A) START FROM THE BEGINNING“No business, no project, no novel ever started big,” Seth said.It started with fear, uncertainty, excitement, possibility. Tons of “what if's” that lead to real action. And real action halts the what if's. The "what if's" turn to "what is".Seth said, “Instead of saying, ‘I need to leap to the middle,' say, ‘I'm going to start with people who want to engage with me.'”All successes start with one person. That's it. One person, then two, then three.Success is a curve. We all know it. Don't try to cheat the curve.B) KNOW YOUR WORLDI asked Seth, “How do you know what the world wants to hear?”“Well, first of all, never the whole world,” he said. “You pick your world.”Where do you hurt? Where do you feel a knot? Can you loosen it up and ease the pressure? Can you create something for the people (or person) who want to love what you want to love?C) WHAT DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SAY?We talked about Facebook. And the Lays Potato Chip guy who re-designed the bag. His job was to make it sound crunchier.Kids had slamming competitions. Who could slam a soda the fastest? So Coke-A-Cola created a bottle with a mouthpiece meant to maximize chugging efficiency. They sold products. But it's the message that matters.I always say: message over money.Invention happens at the edges. Between heart and lungs, breath and vocal cords is the message. It's the thing you want to say. The thing you're afraid to say.“What really matters isn't what time you posted on Facebook,” Seth said. “What matters is, what did you care enough to say?D) ANYONE CAN LEAD…“'Purple Cow‘ says, ‘How do I sit in my office and make a thing that people talk about?'”“What ‘Tribes‘ says is ‘Now that anyone can stand up and lead (because anyone can have a media channel… because anyone can make a connection) will you choose to lead? And if you're going to lead, who will you lead? How will you connect with the people you're leading? That is marketing, but it's also life.”E) CULTURE BEATS EVERYTHING“No one has a Suzuki tattoo,” Seth said.“What's a Suzuki tattoo?” I asked. Then I got it. Harley Davidson makes half their revenue licensing its brand. T-shirts, jackets, etc.“If you're in the Harley tribe, you can't show up on a Suzuki,” he said.“Tribes aren't about the alpha to the omega. Leaders always go away. The alpha person dies or moves on. But the tribe doesn't. The tribe persists. Because culture beats everything. Scenes have a culture. Tribes have a culture. It's the culture that determines how an organization makes its choices, how a nation will evolve.”I've said this before. It doesn't matter who the president is. What matters is who you surround yourself with. Who's in your tribe? Who's in your heart? And if they're toxic to your creativity or well-being, detox now.“The Beatles didn't invent teenagers. I'm not saying we invent our tribe. We just show up to lead them.”I didn't invent the choose yourself community. The cubicle job did.F) SHOW UPI'll never say what other people should do. I just say what I like to do. I say what gets me past just getting by.“Half my blog posts are below average,” Seth said.I asked if he feels bad.Intellectually, I understand failure. But it still hurts. It can turn your life upside down. I lost everything more than once. And maybe you're reading this because you have to… or you're afraid of losing everything.“I'm talking about [creating] generous work with good intent… that didn't work.” That's the failure we need to show up for.“I show up,” Seth said.G) DON'T WRESTLE WITH INFINITYI didn't know what that meant.“I am almost done wrestling with infinity,” he said.We had half an hour left in the interview. I didn't interrupt.I couldn't.I was captivated. My mind expands when I'm seconds away from hearing someone's genius. My vision slows and the inside of my ears soften. It's like my body is creating room.“I made the book I wanted.”“I only printed 5,500 copies of the book. And there's not going to be a second printing. That's all there is.”He doesn't have to chase. He already broke even and the best part is he chose himself.“Now there's not an infinity of upside.”He didn't need approval from publishers, his boss, a network… He didn't write for a bestseller list. He was compelled. And he created. He made what he wanted to make.  “Here's my definition of art,” he said. “Art is when a human being does something that might not work…”And my whole body nodded. He went on… changing my mind.Links and Resources:Seth's upcoming book “What Does It Sound Like When You Change Your Mind?”Read Seth's books:The New York Times, BusinessWeek, and Wall Street Journal bestseller, “Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us“A New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestseller, “The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick)“A New York Times bestseller, “Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?““Purple Cow, Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable““All Marketers are Liars: The Underground Classic That Explains How Marketing Really Works–and Why Authenticity Is the Best Marketing of All““Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers“Join Seth's newsletter and get his latest blog posts at SethGodin.comSeth's “alt MBA” courseFollow Seth on Facebook + TwitterAlso by Seth Godin:The Icarus Deception““Poke the Box““We Are All Weird““Whatcha Gonna Do with That Duck?““V Is for Vulnerable““Meatball Sundae““Free Prize Inside““Unleashing The Ideavirus““Small Is The New Big““Survival Is Not Enough““The Big Red Fez“Also Mentioned:Thomas Hawk Photography ------------What to write and publish a book in 30 days? We send our kids to school and obsess about their test scores, their behavior, and their ability to fit in. We post a help wanted ad and look for experience, famous colleges, and a history of avoiding failure. We invest in companies based on how they did last quarter, not on what they're going to do tomorrow. So why are we surprised when it all falls apart? Our economy is not static, but we act as if it is. Your position in the world is defined by what you instigate, how you provoke, and what you learn from the events you cause. In a world filled with change, that's what matters—your ability to create and learn from change. Poke the Box is a manifesto about producing something that's scarce, and thus valuable. It demands that you stop waiting for a road map and start drawing one instead. You know how to do this, you've done it before, but along the way, someone talked you out of it. We need your insight and your dreams and your contributions. Hurry.

South Australia is poised for another Fringe season with most interstate artists making it across the border before more snap closures due to Covid. We meet one of those artists in this episode, Charles Firth from The Chaser. We also chat with someone who is pushing beyond her borders of security, Dr Gill Hicks. She is giving it all in her Fringe show. And we share a rare recording of Professor Sebastian Longsword, from The MBA School Of MBA Credentials, being interviewed on Radio Adelaide, amid and audience of highly educated listeners. The SA Drink Of The Week is a Barbera by Spider Bill Wines from the Adelaide Hills. And in the musical pilgrimage we hear from Matthew and Alice Barker from Roger And The Albatross. Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concise page Running Sheet: Are we there yet? Fringe in a time of Covid 00:00:00 Intro Introduction to the show by Professor Longsword who has a Fringe show entitled, A Lunchtime MBA. 00:04:57 SA Drink Of The Week The SA Drink Of The Week is 2020 Barbera by Spider Bill Wines in the Adelaide Hills. As a side note, Professor Sebastian Longsword featured this wine in one of his Wine and Book Pairings. See how and why he paired it with Poke The Box, by Seth Godin. 00:09:51 Charles Firth Charles Firth is back in Adelaide with a Fringe show about conspiracy theories related to the Pandemic. You'll know Charles from The Chaser and also from episode 322 of The Adelaide Show. But for today's interview, Steve asks about the interstate artist experience of heading to SA when their home states are falling in and out of lockdown, along with whether or not to bring your conspiracy-loving friends along to the show. Here's the link to The Anti-Expert's Guide To The Pandemic 00:25:10 Dr Gill Hicks Dr Gill Hicks is an inspiration. She was the last survivor rescued from the 2005 London Bombings and through the injuries sustained, lost both her legs. Somehow, that experience of pain and near-death, has shaped her deeply and helped her connect with some truths and insights that are all too easy for the rest of us to see as we skim across life in busyness and routine. In this interview, Steve asks her about her show and we get a taste of her life-affirming sense of humour. Here is the link to Still Alive (and kicking) 00:34:46 Professor Sebastian Longsword Professor Sebastian Longsword from Adelaide's MBA School Of MBA Credentials, was interviewed on Radio Adelaide Breakfast recently, by Tom Mann and Paul Davies. Because proceeds from the Professor's Fringe show go to help The Adelaide Show survive, we'll entice you with this promise: A Lunchtime MBA is the only Adelaide Fringe show in history in which you can come for lunch and leave with an MBA. Here is the link to A Lunchtime MBA 00:47:10 Musical Pilgrimage In the musical pilgrimage, we have a song from Roger and the Albatross, called Trees Have Eyes. Roger and the Albatross, is a South Australian brother/sister duo, Matthew and Alice Barker. They write, sing, play and dance their originally written, harmonious folk songs that tell stories of love, food, lemons and soap. They don't like to take themselves (or life) too seriously and enjoy playing pubs and festivals. You'll often see them share the stage with the talented Ben Roberts from Ukulele Death Squad. Their Fringe show this year is a gig that has theatrical elements and they promise it will entertain! Here is the link to more information about their show, Roger and the Albatross Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Reach Personal Branding Interview Series podcast

WARNING! By listening to this interview, you will be pushed beyond your comfort zone. You will be asked to invent the status quo, not just meet it. You will be pressured to stop dragging your feet and take risks you’ve been postponing. Are you up for the challenge? Are you ready to Poke The Box? Seth Godin is our distinguished guest for this Reach Personal Branding Interview. Seth will discuss his best-selling book Poke The Box in an interactive, one-hour conversation with William Arruda, founder of Reach Personal Branding. In this interview, which will be recorded, you will learn: • How Seth invented the new status quo for publishing • What it means to “poke the box” • Creative ways to overcome your fears of starting projects • Seth’s greatest failure and why failing is encouraged • How to stand out from the crowd and be remarkable • How to be a linchpin • What is means to lead a tribe • Seth Godin’s perspective on personal branding • How to get started on any project in three easy steps ***Spoiler Alert! In case you wanted to get started before the interview: 1) Don’t think about it. 2) Just start. 3) Keep starting. Bio: Seth Godin has written thirteen books that have been translated into more than thirty languages. Every one has been a bestseller. He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership and most of all, changing everything. American Way Magazine calls him, “America’s Greatest Marketer,” and his blog is perhaps the most popular in the world written by a single individual. His latest book, Poke The Box, is a call to action about the initiative you’re taking – in your job or in your life. Seth once again breaks the traditional publishing model by releasing it through The Domino Project. As an entrepreneur, he has founded dozens of companies, most of which failed. Yoyodyne, his first Internet company, was funded by Flatiron and Softbank and acquired by Yahoo! in 1998. It pioneered the use of ethical direct mail online, something Seth calls Permission Marketing. He was VP of Direct Marketing at Yahoo! for a year. His latest company, Squidoo.com, is ranked among the top 125 sites in the US (by traffic) by Quantcast. It allows anyone (even you) to build a page about any topic you’re passionate about. The site raises money for charity and pays royalties to its million plus members. For more information about Seth, visit: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/

Welcome to episode #273 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Seth Godin is more than a Marketer's Marketer, he's quickly becoming a major book publisher that is making the other major book publisher's nervous. He threatened to re-invent the book publishing business earlier this year with The Domino Project (powered by Amazon) and, with close to ten titles already released (all of the best-sellers), he has yet to disappoint. It turns out, that publishing other business book authors has also inspired him to write even more. His latest book, We Are All Weird, is a blunt look at the end of mass media and what this all means to marketers still scrambling to save traditional advertising (hint: it ain't pretty). As usual, Seth is insightful, funny and always provocative (part of the reason each and every one of his own books are consistent best-sellers). Enjoy the conversation... Rather than take a handsome advance from a major book publisher, the best-selling business book author (each of his 13 published books have been best-sellers and collectively have been translated into more than 30 languages), published his latest effort, Poke The Box, on his own book publishing imprint, The Domino Project (powered by Amazon). Godin is also a professional speaker (he was named one of the top 21 speakers for the 21st century by Successful Meetings Magazine) and entrepreneur (Godin was the founder of interactive marketing company Yoyodyne, which Yahoo acquired in 1998). He currently runs Squidoo.com along with The Domino Project. BusinessWeek magazine called him, "the ultimate entrepreneur for the Information Age," and if you have not read such books as Purple Cow, Permission Marketing, The Dip, Tribes and Linchpin, you are doing a disservice to your professional development and the evolution of your business. Enjoy the conversation... Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast - Episode #243 - Host: Mitch Joel. Running time: 41:44.
