In this episode, I have some exciting news to share! Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with none other than Seth Godin, the legendary marketer and author. Seth has written 20 New York Times bestselling books, and his book "Permission Marketing" was actually the first marketing book I ever read. Needless to say, having him on the show was a true honor, and I can't wait to share the insights we discussed. We explored how digital platforms have completely changed the game, transforming marketing from just advertising to encompassing the entire experience and story of a business. We also delved into the power of storytelling and the importance of being genuinely unique in order to stand out in a crowded market. We also tackled the role of discounting and diversification in attracting customers. "I do newsletters." Michael, "the newsletter guy" is direct, funny, unpretentious, and proves that when you focus on one thing you're really good at, you'll succeed. Narrowness is how you get traction in a market. While the term "newsletter" is somewhat old school, there's nothing old about Michael's approach to writing and his method of picking clients. If I client wants to hire him to take a 'chore' off their plate, they are not a good fit. The perfect client is someone who sells something that is identical to the competition. There will be plenty of opportunities that come along that seem like good options and could generate quick profits, but may ultimately hinder the bigger vision of your company. You must determine what you're motivated by and stay true to what you want to build. Begin with the end in mind. Having Low Employee Attrition The majority of Brian's employees and partnerships came from the audience he created with the valuable content they continued to release. All but three of his hires have worked out in the last 18 years and he credits that rare success mostly to how well-aligned people are with the values of the company when they're hired. People knew what they were getting when they were hired because they already knew so much about the company and culture Brian built. Process-Driven Business Most entrepreneurs are not process-driven. In order to scale a business, you'll need to create processes and often times that requires bringing in someone who it process-oriented. As the entrepreneur, you'll need to be willing and open to adopt a new way of doing business. Getting Your Business Growth Unstuck Often many businesses get stuck because they try to use the same marketing message and strategies that got them to their current success. Oftentimes, to continue growing, you must change and pivot your message to reach a different crowd. You often can sell to the “low hanging fruit” one way, but will have to change your message to reach the next sphere of potential customers. You should start with this smaller change before you scrap your product and try to reinvent what you're doing. Email Is Not Dead The stats still show the most effective sales engine is email. Email marketing is not going away anytime soon. So the most important activity of your business regardless of industry is collecting email addresses. Who Is Your Target Audience? You need to narrow down your audience to a small group of people who relate with what you're talking about. Your message should be polarizing to attract the exact right person and the rest of people should either ignore your message or be turned off by it. ROR is the basis of his philosophy...it's all about relationships! His book, Return on Relationship, was released in 2013, and How to Look People in the Eye Digitally in 2015. In this interview, Jessica Ann and Ted Rubin talk about: His background with Seth Godin, starting back in 1997 (He sent Seth Godin a resume!) And the critical error that he made at the beginning of his career. His work with E.L.F. cosmetics in 2008 at the early stage of social and how he built a brand using ingenuity without a marketing budget. (6:00) I speak my mind. I say what I think. I tell people that they have to get back to something that is near and dear to your heart: their humanity. It's about building relationships and being good to people. It's about how connecting with people in a real way will benefit your business. (9:15) I got to listen and learn from Seth Godin. A lot of what I got from Return on Relationship came from Seth's Permission Marketing...about bypassing the agencies whenever you can and talking directly to the people you want to do business with. Agencies provide a great function but Seth's point was: instead (10:45) A network gives you reach but communities give you power...Networks allow you to connect with various people but communities care. (11:33) This evolution to me has been like a God-send. Not only am I a community builder but now I have all of these platforms to build communities that enable and empower me. But I also love to interact and meet with people. I'm obsessed with interacting with people. If you're going to make responsive part of your personal brand, be prepared for when your following grows and you have to be responsive for what you care about. And for me, the beauty or the difficulty of it is not something I built into my brand...it's a part of who I am. (13:00) His definition of community in today's digital age. (17:46) It's not about the platform it's about the people. (22:00) This is how you separate yourself, and that you do care about humanity. When you pass people in the street, smile at them! A brand is what a business or a person does...a reputation is what people remember and share. It's less of a problem than an opportunity. If you're with someone, put the phone down and look at someone. This isn't so much about humanity (although that has a lot to do with it). It's about showing people how important they are to you. (26:30) He tells a true story that not a lot of people know. You will feel better if you treat people better. You will feel better if you default to happy. You will feel better if you stop before you go off on someone. Take a breath and smile :) (32:18) I'm not a big persona guy. And what I've learned is that it's very hard to maintain a persona. In other words, if I didn't really believe in what I do, it would be hard to keep it up. It would be hard to fight the naysayers. (33:30) The hilarious study that was done on Millennials about the reason that the consumption of cereal is going down is because Millennials are too lazy to clean the dishes from eating cereal.
