Crystal Xu and Purvi Patel recently wrote a paper on how to Redesign School Level Systems For Equity. How systems work together. Started with redesign systems work. We actually have a lot more autonomy than we think. Expand our self-confidence around the structures we can control. How we define engagement in school. How do we deal with criticism that we face when we try to implement equitable practices. It comes with the self work. Power Struggle within a classroom. You’re good about making a decision when you know it is true to who you are. Privilege is not about good or bad. Fellowship learning experiences. How do we create more opportunities for Fellowship learning experiences. Making sure people have opportunities that didn’t usually have it before. Ceding power vs. Distributed leadership - Giving more ownership to others. All of those decisions can come with biases and other barriers. How to support people who may have an idea of what they want, but they don’t really have ideas of what they need. How do we really change school so we are serving our families, not so they are serving us? A sense of false choice. Take off the choices that are not possible for most marginalized families. How to be a transformative principal? Listen deeply and “Ring the bells that still can ring” quote. Identify a crack and see it as a light. College students don't vote. Whose fault is it? Is it because they're lazy? Or, perhaps, are there barriers preventing from showing up at the poll booths? If so, what are they? We bring on college experts Theresa Kouo, Assistant Director for Civic Engagement Education at the Washington University in St. Louis and Purvi Patel, Director of Civic and Campus Engagement at The University of Chicago to dive into these questions. Alongside personal histories of political engagement, they share what they've been doing virtually to make sure the youth vote is accounted for in November 2020.See Purvi’s Forbes article "3 Lessons We Learned Engaging Student Voters in the Age of Social Distancing": https://www.forbes.com/sites/civicnation/2020/06/16/3-lessons-we-learned-engaging-student-voters-in-the-age-of-social-distancing/#6996fe68742f Tune in next Monday! As abortion once again heats up as a national issue, NAPAWF executive director and fellow PAACster Sung Yeon Choimorrow joins us to talk about how to have a conversation about abortion with other well meaning Christians, and why the debate about abortion is fundamentally about controlling women's agency. She also discusses her role as ED of the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (“Your life will never be easy again,”), the difficult moral choices it sometimes requires, and the work that NAPAWF did in the case of Purvi Patel. Tonight we'll hear an eclectic line-up taking us all over the globe: First we'll cover the stunning Indiana verdict that sentenced Purvi Patel to decades in prison after she sought medical help after suffering a miscarriage. Then, we'll hear about action the Republic of the Marshall Island took today in United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, demanding that the U.S. adhere to its commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This David and Goliath lawsuit calls on the U.S. to immediately take action to disarm. We'll then go to the Big Island in Hawaii, where native Hawaiians have been protesting and blockading the mountain of Mauna Kea, stalling plans to build a mammoth telescope. We'll round out the hour in conversation with the Rupert Estanislao and Josh Castro, founders of Filipino punk rock label Aklasan Records. Rupert will be playing with Bankrupt District at a KPFA fundraiser at 924 Gilman. With Host Tara Dorabji. The 33-year-old Patel was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for “feticide” and “neglect of a dependent” after seeking medical care for a miscarriage. Correspondent Farah Diaz-Tello joined us to talk about two important court cases in the news: Purvi Patel's feticide conviction and Young v. UPS. For tonight's episode "Hot Mamas," Abby and Dana were joined by two mamas from Black Diamond Burlesque, Laura Daniel Gale and performer Cherry Von Topp. Laura Daniel Gale is owner and producer of this troupe, which has been performing to sold-out audiences since they first hit the stage in 2010. She is also mother to a 20-year-old son. Cherry Von Topp is mother to three fabulous kids ages 5, 7, and 8. We talked about one word that may not be used often to refer to motherhood: "sexy." These mothers talked about how to still feel sexy after pregnancy, and how to balance certain "ideals" of motherhood with personal confidence. Being a positive role model for your children does not have to be mutually exclusive from feeling like a hot mama!
The Purvi Patel prosecution shines a light on the terrifying conclusion to anti-abortion rhetoric that criminalizes pregnancy outcomes and pits the pregnant person against her fetus. The post RJ Court Watch: Indiana Convicts Its First Pregnant Person of ‘Feticide’ appeared first on Rewire.News.
