The field of chemistry is filled with visual experiences, from molecular diagrams to color-changing reactions to data displayed as peaks and waves on a spectrograph. Those experiences and representations are not very accessible to blind and low-vision people. In a recent article in the journal Science Advances, a group of researchers describes using 3D printing to create translucent raised images known as lithophanes that can represent high-resolution chemical data in a tactile and visual form simultaneously.Biochemist Dr. Bryan Shaw joins Ira Flatow to discuss the approach, and other techniques and tools his lab group at Baylor University is developing to make the lab more accessible to blind and low-vision researchers—from specialized devices that assist in the loading of gels for protein electrophoresis, to tiny molecular models that are best experienced by putting them on the tongue.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com Subscribe to this podcast. Following the 2017 season, Jeff Bridich and the Colorado Rockies decided to spend $106 million dollars on the bullpen, signing Jake McGee, Bryan Shaw, and Wade Davis. Unfortunately for the Rockies, none of the players finished out their contract as ineffectiveness, injury, and other circumstances forced the Rockies to cut ties with each of them. Skyler and Dustin do their best to reflect on the initial hopeful reactions to the signings and lament that none of the deals made the most sense with the money that was offered. McGee had solid years prior to the new contract, Davis led the NL in saves in 2018, and Shaw ate innings. The Super Bullpen was shortlived and one of the biggest blunders by the Rockies in recent memory. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The offense could not overcome the pitching problems and the White Sox lost to the Mets, 11-10. Lucas Giolito gave up three homeruns and walked five as he could not get out of the fourth inning. It was one of the worst starts of his season and it came at a very bad time. Sox relievers, Bryan Shaw and Tanner Banks, did not help matters as they gave up three runs collectively. Sox offense battled and almost completed the comeback. Sox scored five runs in the seventh inning and had multiple opportunities throughout the game to score additional runs, including in the ninth inning. Yasmani Grandal and Jake Burger each had three runs batted in. Tim Anderson had a three hit night. White Sox send Touki Toussaint to the mound on Wednesday to face Justin Verlander.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!DaveDownload Dave today at Dave.com/mlb. You could get up to $500 in 5 minutes or less! White Sox send Touki Toussaint to the mound on Wednesday to face Justin Verlander. Final game of spring training has arrived for the Chicago White Sox as they prepare to turn their focus to Houston. There were more roster decisions being made and some clarity on what the bench as well as bullpen might look like. Romy Gonzalez, despite a slow start the spring, has come on lately and is rumored to have made the ballclub. Right hand pitcher, Gregory Santos, might also make the ballclub instead of Nick Avila or Bryan Shaw. Aaron Bummer has returned to action and has looked pretty good in his brief Cactus League outings. Infielder, Hanser Alberto, should find out on Wednesday that he officially made the team but he had a scare in the 5th inning of Monday's game when he was hit by pitch in the hand and had to leave. White Sox say that he is fine. Pedro Grifol understands that there is no such thing as a perfect lineup and values versatility but he also provides some insight into the process of picking his roster. Andrew Vaughn retuned to action after a lower back issue but Yoan Moncada is still suffering from his lower back problems and is day-to-day.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONMLB for $20 off your first purchase.Ultimate Pro Baseball GMTo download the game just visit probaseballgm.com or look it up on the app stores. Our listeners get a 100% free boost to their franchise when using the promo LOCKEDON (ALL CAPS) in the game store.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Hey Sox fans, welcome back to Good Guys Talk Back. The legend, Leury Garcia, did not make the Opening Day roster for the first time since he came to the Sox from the Rangers back in the summer of 2013. So who's in and who's out? Hanser Alberto, Gavin Sheets, Seby Zavala and Romy Gonzalez seem to be the guys off the bench. Gregory Santos might be the surprise arm in the bullpen after Nick Avila and Bryan Shaw were denied spots. The Sox have just two more Spring Training games before a day off, then Opening Day in Houston. There is not a lot of national attention for the White Sox to reclaim the AL Central title but Nick and Pat make their case for why the Sox will be better than projected. Predictions are made about season totals and individual performances. Also, Nick previews the new food at the ballpark as the 2023 season is just days away. The Cleveland Guardians drop their game against the Kansas City Royals, but would you rather have the win or rather have an off day for the bullpens central players? I think we can all agree the game not going deep in extra innings makes us all winners. We also take some time to praise Bryan Shaw. While we focused on the roster changes yesterday it is time to talk about one of the top ten relievers in franchise history. A player who is third all-time in appearances and who has been a central part of this teams recent success.  We begin the discussion of the postseason discussing what pitchers we think will make the final roster. The setup of the pitching rotation in the opening series. Who is the ace for the Guardians? Who should be the fourth stater? And what do we know based on Wednesday's pitching matchup? The focus is primarily on the Guardians starters, and what is likely to happen with Zach Plesac and Aaron Civale in the first two series. We discuss the postseason pitching a bit more before switching it up to discuss the Tampa Bay Rays postseason rotation. I ask the question: did the Rays mess up their aligned postseason pitching? The Guardians seem likely to miss Drew Rasmussen and Jeffrey Springs, either of whom likely would have been a stronger matchup than Corey Kluber.   Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! While it was absolutely the right move, I don't think anyone expected Shaw to be let go. We talk about the additions of Will Brennan and Bo Naylor. Will they make the postseason roster? Why were they promoted so late? We also focus on just how good Brennan has been since his promotion. We also get into the team's defense, and how it continues to be one of their greatest strengths. We also ask the important question: is Steven Kwan a Cylon? The Cleveland Guardians had a massive 40-man issue a year ago, and we thought there might be one this year. Instead, thanks to all the promotions the 40-man is more or less sorted. There are one maybe two more must-adds when the season ends. We talk about some of the players on the bubble, who have excelled this year and who have taken a step back. Hear the case for Tim Herrin, Nic Enright, Joey Cantillo, and others. We spend some time on the games over the weekend. The Cleveland Guardians won the series against the Kansas City Royals, but we ask was it worth it? Was getting the win worth not giving rest to your pen down the stretch? We also get into the struggles of Trevor Stephan and wonder if he will get the command on his splitter back before the postseason arrives. We also get into why Will Brennan and Bo Naylor might end up making the postseason roster even though technically neither is eligible.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Cleveland Guardians have swept the Minnesota Twins expanding their lead on the Twins to 4.5 games and their overall lead in the American League Central to 2.5. The Twins are under .500 and dropped to third place for the first time since April. We get into the big win from Friday which the Guardians tried to give up late but managed to hold on and win. We get into the good, the bad, and the hairy.  Next up is the next two games in this series, another pair of wins for the Cleveland Guardians starting with the Oscar Gonzalez-powered Sunday game which saw the Guardians manage seven walks. They have weeks where they don't get seven walks. Bryan Shaw tried to give it away but the Guardians held on slammed the door and beat the Twins. On Sunday Bieber was bloody brilliant and the Guardians continued to walk and win. We discuss the upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels who have had one of the worst offenses in baseball in the second half. They are a team that are very beat up, and the Guardians should dominate over the next three games. Yet the pitching matchup makes me nervous about the Guardians chances in this series as the guardians must face two lefties which have been a tall order for this offense this year.   Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! I am cranky so we start this one off with a rant about bullpen usage. Eli Morgan has a nearly three-run differential between his FIP, fielding independent ERA, vs lefties and righties. He has been largely ineffective against lefties due to his slider just not being an effective pitch. Sending him out to face a series of lefties is nearly as bad as asking Bryan Shaw to give you two innings. Yes, he ran into bad luck, but he also was unable to record a single out when asked to go for two innings. He has been ineffective when asked to go two.  In segment two we switch the focus to the whole games played today which saw the best start of the year for Aaron Civale, Xazvion Curry with a solid debut, and Andres Gimenez continues to show he belongs in any discussion about the best infielders in baseball. We also take some time to continue with some Steven Kwan appreciation. We end with the worst quote of the week, thanks to a former Guardian. Some stats stand out as they pertain to the Guardians. And a classy move by Franmil that Cleveland did not match on his way out. When the season first began, we knew that this year would be a season of mining through the organization to find players that will stick around for 2023 and beyond. The Guardians have done a pretty good job of doing that, and Gerbs and Ethan tried to identify who will stay and who will go! The duo went down the roster and made some uncomfortable "cuts" about who might be leaving and who might be staying. For posterities sake, and so we can have a record of how bad we got it, here are the results of the Take Em or Leave Em game: Take Em Jose Ramirez, Andres Gimenez, Josh Naylor, Steven Kwan, Myles Straw, Oscar Gonzalez, Nolan Jones, Tyler Freeman, Austin Hedges, Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, Emmanuel Clase, Trevor Stephan, Nick Sandlin, Sam Hentges, Bo Naylor, George Valera, Cody Morris Leave Em Amed Roasrio, Owen Miller, Will Benson, Luke Maile, Zach Plesac, Aaron Civale, Eli Morgan, Bryan Shaw, Enyel De Los Santos, James Karinchak Learn more about your ad choices. I am back and there is so much to talk about. The Guardians continue to stick around in the race, instead of going over all of the games that occurred when I was traveling. Instead, I focus on Sunday's win which might be the most unlikely victory all year. They faced a top lefty, there were multiple players out, Bryan Shaw was starting and yet they beat a potential Cy Young, Award Winner, and are now just a game back of the Twins, and are now just a game back of the Twins. We dig into the numbers trying to figure out exactly what has changed for Franmil Reyes. He has been one of the Guardian's top hitters the last few years. The data paints a picture of what has changed in his approach and overall effectiveness. What can the Guardians do? Does one consider some time in the minors or not? We discuss what might happen with Franmil Reyes and Amed Rosario at the deadline. We discuss why it is both likely and unlikely that either player is traded before settling on an answer. We also explain why it is that I am all in on a Sean Murphy deal. We talk about the draft the Guardians were just 510 dollars from losing a first-rounder next year. The Cleveland Guardians are back to .500 after a fantastic win today. The offense was productive but the big story and our first focus is on the fantastic performance of Triston McKenzie. We focus on his exceptional performance. We also get into some roster moves that were made due to Aaron Civale's injury along with the return of Kirk McCarty. We also get into the issues with the Guardians starting pitching depth in general.  We dig deeper into the win for the Guardians. The Detroit Tigers are very bad with three hitters hitting below .200 and just two batters with OPS over .700. Their top hitter this year is former Guardians Eric Haase. We talk about how nice he would look in the backup catcher role and why it stinks he got away. We also give away our three stars for this game Triston McKenzie, Andres Gimenez, and Amed Rosario. We look at top-performing pitching prospects this year. Logan Allen might have had some issues in AAA but he has 21 more strikeouts than the next nearest pitcher in the minors. We dig into who have been the top performers and notice that the top names on the strikeout lists are all prospects that are pitchers of note. We also look into the recent minor league transactions and why there has been so much movement involving Lake County. 1. While it was another rough weekend for the Guardians in general. It was a fantastic debut for Nolan Jones who reached base multiple times in every game. He hit the longest home run of the year, showing some of the easiest power we have seen from a Guardians' player this year. We take some time to talk about the 2016 Cleveland Guardians draft and that draft in general. This draft has a chance to go down as one of the greatest in history with a chance to pass the 1989 draft for the greatest in franchise history. Nolan Jones, Shane Bieber, Aaron Civale, and Zach Plesac are the big names but even players like tanner Tully and Conner Capel have made it to the big leagues. 2. We talk about the Friday and Saturday games. While Saturday's game was one of the best ones of the year for the Guardians. It was the Friday game that saw the Guardians bullpen implode that we focus on. We discuss what has been occurring with Eli Morgan and Sam Hentges over the last month that has seen both of them struggle in the setup role for Emmanuel Clase. We also talk about why I wish they would go to Clase based on leverage situations and not just closing situations. 3. We talk about the Sunday loss, we are watching as it occurs so there are comments about the Guardians finally getting a run across. This is a game where there was some bad luck, but at the end of the day, the offense was not good enough to get things done. We also congratulate Bryan Shaw for hitting his first appearance bonus and making an additional 150K this year. We should all be so lucky. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Nolan Jones, Shane Bieber, Aaron Civale, and Zach Plesac are the big names but even players like tanner Tully and Conner Capel have made it to the big leagues.2. We also talk about why I wish they would go to Clase based on leverage situations and not just closing situations.3. We talk about Wednesday's game as it occurs. We are joining in the 7th and talking about why I would have sent Amed Rosario, why I am annoyed by replay, and why not pinch-hitting for Austin Hedges is a bad decision regardless of the outcome. We also talk about the minor deal of the day which involved Daniel Johnson being traded to the New York Mets. We also dig into the regression of Owen Miller, Andres Gimenez, and Steven Kwan and who has the best numbers in May, and why there is room for concern with the other two. We also explain why it should be time to free Oscar Gonzalez.   We continue to focus on the game and hey the Guardians finally get on the board. We also talk about the Aaron Civale injury which of course had to happen after his first strong start of the year. I also complain about Bryan Shaw allowing him to make me look foolish reverse jinx works.  Lastly we discuss the Royals series even though the Tigers are on deck. We talk about the mess that is the Royals and how despite many high picks they have a shallow minors and a last-place squad. Then I realize the Tigers are the team on deck so I preview the pitching matchups and make predictions for the next two series. The Guardians are facing the teams with the third, fourth, and fifth-worst records; they have to go 7-3 in their next ten against these bad teams to get back to .500.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. 1. I bring out the Stats Scouting Notebook from 1998. I talk about how I started my love of prospects, and how until now I had not realized that one of the people I give the most credit for helping shape my interest: Jim Callis was also the writer of every prospect section in the book. We have some fun with old stats, but save the reports for another day.2. The Bryan Shaw contract has been reported and I am blown away by how much he got and how much he could make. It was reported he got 3 million dollars to start with a chance to make up to 9 million. This is for a player no other team seemed to want from a team that has been unwilling to spend money.3. We talk about why Michael Conforto is the last free agent standing and why he is not a likely fit for the Guardians. Then we talk about why the lack of anything from the Guardians is infuriating and rightfully so for most fans. We talk about all the reasons why the Guardians should have more money to spend and give a plausible reason why they have not engaged in the market yet.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
