While we still are in a holding pattern of no events, I'm stoked Fred was able to put the tools down and jump on for a chat to talk about the latest competition, how it felt to ride in the middle of Covid without a crowd and to stand on top of the box again, in a country with such a deep pool of talent in FMX. When I look at Brazil's Freestyle Motocross scene, it still feels a lot like when I was riding in Australia. There are a lot of guys, a lot of old guys, a lot of new guys always coming through and it's good to see they are still putting on a national competition every year, and even having some international flavour thrown into the mix! I'm sure as most of the followers of this podcast, you're already following FMX pretty closely and would know Fred, but if you might not have heard of the name, he's been in almost every single event going around at one point in time. Before having millions of YouTube views like today, Sebastian Westberg had a meteoric rise to the top echelons of FMX after winning the chance to ride at Red Bull X-Fighters as the first "Novillero" with a Fan Vote in 2016 in Madrid, Spain. But one day before the event, he broke his leg in the foam pit training on a Flair 540! Somehow he slipped his foot into his boot and competed and made a name for himself in the famous Plaza de Toros Las Ventas bullfighting ring! Undoubtedly one of the greatest ever Freestyle Motocross riders, Levi Sherwood stunned the FMX world when he won at his first ever appearance of the 2009 Red Bull X-Fighters event in Mexico City. Levi then stunned the world when he retired from competition only 10 years later in 2019, at the age of 28, when he was seemingly at the peak of his career. After a huge 2017 season, winning everything from X Games Gold in Freestyle MX and Best Trick, Nitro World Games and Red Bull X-Fighters, no one would have predicted Levi's retirement. Is it a coincidence that Levi's final X-Fighters was also the final ever X-Fighters!? You probably already know almost everything about the Rubber Kid from New Zealand, so in this episode, we go into the process of retirement but more importantly his next step into engineering with CNC, Titanium and of course what he's becoming so known for on social media, his Carbon Fibre work and creating his new projects. Motorcycle Manufacturer's and Factory Race Teams spend millions and millions of dollars every year on development. And Levi Sherwood, a one-man-band has modified his KTM 250sx to weigh in only at 89.5 kilograms wet (ready to ride, with fuel/oils/fluids!) This weeks episode welcomes modern day renaissance man Christian Stevenson AKA DJ BBQ to the island. Christian has his fingers in many proverbial pies. He is a a brilliant chef and is Jamie Olivers right hand man on the Foodtube channel. Christian also has his own weekly show on the DJBBQ channel. He is probably best known and respected as the presenter of his Channel 5 television series ‘RAD’ and ‘RAD The Groms Tour’ which ran for 10 years and won him and the channel their first BAFTA in the Best Entertainment category. Christian is also a highly respected DJ. He has amassed a huge fan base from his days at Kerrang and XFM as well as DJing and hosting major events all over the world. Christian is ALSO heavily involved in the world of Freesports and gaming. He has hosted Red Bull X Fighters and the Ski and Snow board show and was heavily instrumental in the scripting and soundtrack of the game "Dirt 2" and subsequently featured as a character in "Dirt 3”. Oh, and he also made his acting debut starring in the film “Chalet Girl” alongside Bill Nighy and Brooke Shields.
