This episode was recorded while I was driving home from Squibby's place, 28 hours into my 38 hour sleep deprivation experiment. So if I sound a bit tired, you'll know why. Turning summer into a road trip, with the van breaking down 2 times in 2 weeks it was lucky that Steve made it to the MXGP in Lommel, Belgium, with the Monster Energy team and then straight over for the Squibb Freestyle show in Yealmpton, UK before heading to Monster Energy MotoGP at Silverstone. It is with the heaviest of hearts to write this, but Jayo Archer has passed away leaving a void impossible to fill for his friends, family and fans around the world. While it is early news, we respect the wishes of friends and family and hope they are able to grieve easier without scrutiny during this terrible time. All I can say right now is, he was one of the best guys I had met in Freestyle MX. His personality, attitude and positivity was infectious. He was so humble, easy to talk too with no ego associated with the level of success he had achieved and the limits he was pushing. My thoughts are with his family and friends right now. This will be the toughest of times for them but to know that we all respected Jayo so much. This truly was "Best Trick"! Only 1 jump for each rider, make it stick. And whoever wins takes home $40,000. Maybe that's why Monster Energy didn't bring this competition back again after the first year in 2011. It was too expensive for 1 jump! This could be one of the best FMX competitions, but it only happened once! The throwback to 2006 when Travis Pastrana only managed to do one FMX run, and it was enough to win on the same weekend that he landed the Double Backflip in Best Trick only one or two nights earlier and then took a Gold medal in Rally as well! Only 5 riders made it to the final for Freestyle MX which is probably more on account of the gnarly course given and the wind in the background. It's crazy to think but in 2007 at X Games Best Trick, it was the first time we had ever seen Kyle Loza at X Games, and he came with a trick that nobody had ever landed. The Body Varial called a 'Volt' which he obviously named. Loza went on to create the Electric Doom and Electric Death and also the first rider to attempt the Bike Varial which has only ever been landed by Tom Pages. But this Throwback Thursday was a big one. 2007 X Games Best Trick was one of the gnarliest in history with Scott Murray attempting to land the second ever Double Backflip at X Games after Travis Pastrana landed it in 2006 the previous year. For this weeks Throwback Thursday we tune in to watch the 3rd and final FMX Riot 3 competition. For the last instalment, the crew headed into the Middle East for the first ever Freeride competition in the region in Dubai, UAE. 5 of the sickest Freeriders drove through bedouin villages before reaching the Arabian Sand Dunes and get to scout out all new jumps that had never felt the pain of dirt bike tires and paddle tires from these guys! As we get into the middle of the FMX Riot series of Freeride competitions wayyy back in the old days on this weeks Throwback Thursday live viewing, we were expecting to see a big return from Mike Metzger and as far as Clint Esposito and I were aware as we were watching it live, Metz was on top! But to our surprise and probably that of everyone, Metz upped and left before the last day of competition, and Larry Linkogle even did a sneaky exit as well. This weeks Throwback Thursday Live companion was a huge one with the first ever FMX Riot 1 competition held in SoCal featuring some of the biggest names in FMX, Motocross and Freeride! Clint Esposito and I step back in time when Freeride MX competitions were as rare as hens teeth but with riders who were ready to dominate the landscape they were given. FMX Riot 1 was held in 2 different locations of Glamis sand dunes and Ocotillo Wells (with 2 different days of competition there as well) In this Riders Lounge Podcast episode, this is after we watched the video and had our discussion on what went down and some of the biggest impacts from the video. 2023 was a huge year for King of the Whip and not just because more overseas riders made their way down to a very warm South Africa for the Best Whip themed competition. But returning to Montecasino after last years massive event, it was going to be tough to beat the vibes from the first time it went on the big stage in the centre of Johannesburg. And of course, LW Mag and Ryan van der Spuy knocked it out of the park! A fully sold out show, an extra 1,300 people were allowed into the venue from last year and made it even more special! I was privileged enough to be the Host of the show for the second time and I was completely blown away at the increase in level of riding from everyone! Last year was insane, I didn't expect 30 wild South African racers going ballistic on their first attempt at hitting a steel ramp. This year, everyone stepped it up again with the inclusion of Julien Vanstippen returning to defend his title, Edgar Torronteras the legend coming down to try steal the win. And Marc Pinyol as the international trick master coming to blow everyone's minds on body varials. When one of the legends of FMX is talking about different disciplines at X Games, it probably pays to sit up and listen to what they have to say. This time, I was talking with Taka Higashino during a weekend at the French supercross event at Supercross de Lyon and we were talking about how there is no real style in FMX any more unless you see it in an Upright Trick. Of course, Taka is still one of the more stylish riders even on backflip combos, but the crux of the issue is - style always came from the uprights.You knew more about a rider in 8 jumps of uprights than you could in any flip-combo-fest. Now, perhaps more than ever, we need to look back at the upright tricks where it is a lot more fun to learn for the riders, it looks cooler for the crowd and more importantly it's probably even 'relatable' to an extent. I'm totally about this idea and would love to see an upright comp at X Games, or any competition for that matter! Let's see if anyone listens.What do you think? Another X Games, another year that everyone jumps up and down about the judging! In 2023, Japan FMX Best Trick, there were 7 riders who were gunning for the Gold Medal and this time it was Jacko Strong who took home his 7th Gold Medal in Best Trick discipline, equalling Travis Pastrana's 7 in Freestyle and Ronnie Renner's 7 in Step-Up! Of course, there's always controversy around judging and this time it played out with the two big dogs of Best Trick - Jacko Strong and Rob Adelberg who have enough Gold Medals to sink a ship! They both threw down Front Flip No Handers, and you could very easily argue Adelberg had this one wrapped up. But Jacko won with the 'UnTucked' Frontie. I personally couldn't care less - both riders were freaking awesome and all 7 riders were on their game! But let me know what you think. This is my personal thoughts as I watched it all play out. 1. This quick interview with Harry Bink directly after his crash in Munich has it all! From what went wrong in the crash, with the bike spluttering up the ramp, coming up short and having one of the most spectacular crashes we've seen.
