This episode is part of our Skilled Labor Series hosted by MCJ partner, Yin Lu. This series is focused on amplifying the voices of folks from the skilled labor workforce, including electricians, farmers, ranchers, HVAC installers, and others who are on the front lines of rewiring our infrastructure.Today, we're taking a slightly different spin. Instead of focusing on what it'll take to electrify homes, as we've heard in past episodes, we're talking about why it's currently not working as well as it should and the key barriers preventing us from moving faster on the home decarb adoption curve. Many of you know our guest as Nate "the House Whisperer.” Nate Adams is a longtime HVAC insulation and ceiling contractor who lives in West Virginia and describes himself as "a bit unusual in the climate community," coming from the right side of the political spectrum. And he is one of home electrification's fiercest and most consistent advocates.Yin and Nate cover a lot of ground in this episode, including the dangers of positioning policy rebates and savings to consumers at the beginning of their purchase journey. We uncover that OEMs can convert most air conditioners in factories and warehouses into heat pumps, addressing the current market supply shortage, along with exploring the reasons behind the hesitation to do so. Finally, we discuss how going all-electric is not the solution that gets us to scale and that hybrid systems are the actual silver bullet. There are some controversial and counterintuitive bits coming up and if you want to ask Nate more questions after you listen, stay tuned for an upcoming AMA session with him on the MCJ Slack. In this episode, we cover: [04:01]: Nate's background and how he became "the House Whisperer" [06:58]: Issues with oversized furnace design and sizing[10:55]: The concept of definite optimism and indefinite optimism in relation to the future of electrification[13:12]: Friction between conservative contractors and climate-focused homeowners [16:32]: The importance of positioning policy rebates and savings to consumers[24:46] How IRA performance requirements disqualify 80-85% of equipment models[29:18]: Overview of the biggest barriers to electrifying homes[32:06]: Upstream vs. midstream and potential of converting all ACs to heat pumps[34:36]: Mandated heat pumps in Vancouver, BC [38:31]: Psychology as a barrier to electrification[41:02]: How hybrid systems can reduce fear of heat pumps for both contractors and homeowners[47:26]: Nate's HVAC 2.0 business model improves contractor and homeowner experience[49:57]: The launch of Nate's air sealing course and Home Comfort BookGet connected: Nate Adams X / LinkedInYin X / LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective / Instagram*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on Sep 13, 2023 (Published on Nov 15, 2023)

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Saturday, June 3  Shepherdstown's oldest church finds new life as a theater venue…satellite-based broadband is luring remote workers to relocate to rural West Virginia…and, find out what exciting festivals are taking place in June…on today's daily304. #1 – From WVPB – A 275-year-old church in Shepherdstown will be repurposed as a theater venue. The congregation of the Christ Reformed United Church of Christ donated the historic building to the Contemporary American Theater Festival, which produces and develops new plays for worldwide audiences.  Founded in 1747, the United Church of Christ is the oldest church in Shepherdstown. It held its final service in January after the retirement of its pastor.  “We met with the representatives from the church, and I had a long conversation about really protecting the integrity of some of the historical elements of the church,” CATF Artistic Director Peggy McKowen said. “The stained glass windows, also with the church comes the graveyard and the responsibility of that. I think the church congregation felt comfortable that CATF would uphold the usage of the building with a great sort of responsibility and grace to maintain the things that were really valued about it.”   The church will be used as a rehearsal space in the short-term with plans to use it as a performance venue in the future.    Read more: https://wvpublic.org/historic-shepherdstown-church-to-be-repurposed-as-live-theater-venue/   #2 – From WV EXPLORER – Satellite-based broadband is allowing telecommuters to settle in even some of the most remote areas in West Virginia. The revolutionary development is changing the face of the chiefly rural state at the center of the eastern U.S. “Thanks to Starlink and other broadband initiatives, West Virginia is welcoming thousands of new residents who are well-educated and affluent. There will be growing pains, yes, but I can't imagine a more positive future for the state,” said David Sibray, the publisher of West Virginia Explorer Magazine and a Foxfire Realty agent who specializes in marketing rural and recreational properties. Nate Adams, who is among the state's new residents and a Starlink  user, says the technology is enabling remote work across West Virginia. An expert in home heating and cooling systems, Adams is popularly known as The House Whisperer and travels the country lecturing on atmospheric control. “My wife, Rachel, and I moved to the New River Gorge  two years ago from the Cleveland area. Her family is from West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. We've been traveling here for short trips for years and planned to retire here, but we moved our timetable up to—well, now,” Adams said. “The biggest reason we could? We both work remotely, and there's fast internet here. Now there's an option for remote workers like us that want to live in a beautiful place but require a good internet connection.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2023/05/28/starlink-broadband-remote-west-virginia-david-sibray/   #3 – From WOWK-TV – Planning a weekend getaway or mini staycation in June? Check out the Weston Carp Festival June 9-10, with a fishing tournament, live music, kayak float and more.  Then there's Summerfest, the Almost Heaven BBQ Bash, the West Virginia Wild and Wonderful Celtic Festival and Highland Games, and the West Virginia Renaissance Festival. This week we welcome back one of our favorite regular guests Nate “The House Whisperer” Adams for a show called electrification, heat pumps, IAQ & The Inflation Reduction Act. Nate “The House Whisperer” Adams is the author of The Home Comfort Book and has helped numerous clients make their homes healthier, more comfortable, and able to run on clean electricity. He and his partners have adapted that upgrade process into the HVAC 2.0 program which gives HVAC contractors a business model to deliver the same results for their clients while enjoying their work more and being more profitable. His focus on residential electrification retrofits earned him the moniker “The Father of Electrify Everything” from Panama Bartolomy, CEO of the Building Decarbonization Coalition. He splits his time between living on the Cuyahoga River in Hiram Ohio and in a former West Virginia coal mining village with his wife and young daughter.

How Will New Federal Initiatives Affect the HVAC/IAQ Industry? The White House, EPA, and other Federal agencies will be rolling out new initiatives that may flood billions of dollars into IAQ and electrification in this country. At the forefront are the White House Clean Air Challenge and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.  How may these programs affect the HVAC and indoor environmental markets for both consumers and contractors? That's the topic on this week's show when we are joined by our guests Bryan Orr (HVACR School) and Nate Adams (HVAC 2.0) to discuss these developments in the marketplace.  Join us here LIVE from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT (UTC -4), or check out the video recording and audio podcast after on this space. Nate is cofounder of Energy Smart Home Performance which plans and executes comprehensive insulation and HVAC upgrades to solve client problems. Energy Smart has the most detailed case studies in the industry. He's passionate about helping homeowners and HVAC contractors understand how homes really work so root causes of comfort and health problems can be addressed, not symptoms. These upgrades often result in electrifications where homes are converted to only use electricity, reducing air pollution both indoors and out. He's currently working on the HVAC 2.0 program to train HVAC contractors how to help clients solve comfort and health issues in their homes. OVERVIEWThis week on Bucket Talk, we meet HVAC technician and hobby woodworker Nate Adams, who you can find on Instagram as @builtby_n8. He's been in the HVAC trade for 20 years, working on the sales side for the last 15 after starting his career with an apprenticeship. Since he's no longer out and about working with his hands, he decided to get a woodworking shop going. To Nate, woodworking is not only a fun way to get his hands dirty, but it is a form of therapy and a time to relax. Listen in as Nate chats with our hosts about making his way from apprentice to sales, finding solace in the workshop and helping others learn their craft. ABOUT NATEAs of now, Nate has been in the HVAC trade for 20 years. He got his start like many others in the trades, with an apprenticeship. Initially inspired by seeing his father build a house from scratch with his buddies in the days before YouTube, he knew that getting into the trades was what he wanted to do. “My dad was always tinkering and fixing stuff. [He] built the house he currently lives in…[If] he was under the car, I was under the car with him. If he was under the tractor, I was under the tractor with him. So that's kind of where I think my love of tools and working with my hands came from.” After an unfortunate setback, Nate found himself off of the hands-on side and on the side of the manufacturers — initially working in shipping and receiving, and eventually working his way up into a role in sales. When most folks would have thrown their hands up and quit, Nate pushed forward. “The way I look at it is you can never give up, like whatever situation you've dealt with, whether it's pushed on you or you put yourself in it, you got to keep just plugging away and figure it out and do the best you can” Since he's no longer spending his days actually working hands-on with HVAC stuff, finding time to work with his hands is a void he has to fill; working with his hands is what he loves to do. This is where he found his passion for woodworking. Once he had his space built out, he started posting his work on social media and his Instagram took off from there. He wasn't woodworking just to be popular on social media — he was looking to find some zen in the craziness of life. “I just enjoy what I do. It's my outlet, my stress relief, if you will. So my goal with the shop was to set it up so that I didn't have to spend an hour setting the shop up and then try to do a few minutes of work because that's all the time I had left. I got two kids and a job and a lot of other things that pull me in different directions. I wanted my shop to be set up so I could walk out, spend 30 minutes, set it down, walk away from it, and then come back, you know, without having to do a ton of setup.” Now that he's got social media worked out, he's finding new ways to use his platform to help other makers, whether it is a video on tips and tricks or unboxing a new tool someone might be looking for. He's got a pretty good setup in the HVAC space and wants to continue doing what he's doing, both there and with his woodworking. From the sound of it, he has a handful of paths in front of him, all which lead to success.

Today's guest is Katie Dykes, Commissioner of Connecticut's Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP).Katie was nominated by Governor Ned Lamont to serve as the Commissioner of DEEP, and was confirmed on February 20, 2019.  Katie previously served as Chair of the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) from 2015-2018, and as Deputy Commissioner for Energy at Connecticut DEEP from 2012-2015. Katie also served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, Inc. (RGGI) from 2014 to 2017.  RGGI is a multi-state effort focused on reducing carbon emissions from electric generating facilities.  Katie joined CT DEEP in March 2012 after prior service as Deputy General Counsel for the White House Council on Environmental Quality and as a Legal Advisor to the General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Energy.  She is a graduate of Yale College and the Yale Law School.I was looking forward to this episode, as  government is not an area where I historically have been particularly strong, but it's so important for tackling a systems problem like climate change. And it's not just the federal government, state governments really matter as well, and Katie's in a key role, in a key state, doing really interesting things. This is a great opportunity to learn about how someone in Katie's shoes thinks about setting priorities for the state, getting things done, what form the transition should take, what role the federal government should play, what role the states should play, what some blockers are to getting things done, and how they can move faster. We also have a great discussion about how the private sector fits in, and the roles of technology and innovation.Enjoy the show! You can find me on twitter @jjacobs22 (me), @mcjpod (podcast), or @mcjcollective (company) and via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where I encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded March 29, 2022To learn more about the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, visit: https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/About/About-UsTo learn more about this episode, visit: https://mcjcollective.com/my-climate-journey-podcast/katie-dykesFor insights on marketing climate solutions like heat pumps, Katie credits #energytwitter members like Nate Adams (@energysmartwv); and for more state-level climate leadership, check out the US Climate Alliance (@USClimate)!

LIVING A MOST UNUSUAL LIFE. When confronted with two possible paths, how often do we really choose the one less trodden? While most of us follow the crowd when it comes to careers, where we live and even where we vacation, Nate Adams has consistently taken the road less traveled. From Madagascar to Medellin and seemingly everywhere in between, Nate has explored and lived in some of the most remote regions of the planet. Over drinks both exotic and hyper local, Nate examines the source of his wanderlust, why we should get out of our comfort zones more often, and what once compelled him to wire $20,000 to a taxi driver he had just met in Trinidad and Tobago. Above all, Nate Adams shares whether the road less traveled has, in fact, made all the difference. Nate's book, “The Tragedy of Madagascar: An Island Nation Confronts the 21st Century”, will be released in the second half of 2022.
