In May 2017, Richard Collins III had just been commissioned into the U.S. Army when he was stabbed to death at a university bus stop. His killer had links to a white supremacist group and was sentenced to life in prison. For years, Rick and Dawn Collins have been pushing to bury their son with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Geoff Bennett spoke with them about it. Sadness and sorrow are universal while our path to healing is individual. It bears repeating that the passion of a grieving parent has seemingly no boundaries or limits. You might ask yourself, where does my guest on Real Grief - Real Healing, Dawn Collins, find the energy to create the meaningful legacy of her son, 1st Lieutenant Richard Collins, III? In episode 42, appropriately titled, “The World is Learning His Name” Momma Bear Dawn shares with us that she learned determination and “knowing the essence of who you are” are key factors guiding her healing journey.Being mindful of his promising military career ahead of him, Richard was waiting on an Uber for a ride home after celebrating his commission as Lieutenant into the Army on May 18, 2017. Dawn explains that a monster stole her son's life for refusing to step aside at a bus stop on the University of Maryland campus. Like his grandfather, Richard was murdered because of the color of his skin and the hate from another. I know you are thinking what I am writing now…This Has to Stop. Lt. Richard Collins, III was the best and the brightest, expecting to serve the United States of America for the benefit of all citizens. The military is in his lineage as his father and grandfather each served America – not Black or white America. They are patriots through and through. Dawn and her family know that while there are more good people than those filled with hate, more hate crimes will occur. Therefore, they worked quickly and diligently to change the hate crime law in Maryland, tightening loopholes for the next unsuspecting family in a similar situation as theirs. You see, the monster who murdered Richard was convicted of murder but not of a hate crime. Two notable achievements, in honor of Lt. Richard Collins, III included a $1 Million scholarship in his name from the state of Maryland for ROTC cadets attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in Maryland. And the BSU - UMD Social Justice Alliance formed because of Momma Bear Dawn and her persistence in bringing together the Bowie State and University of Maryland presidents to provide educational content for all of their students strives to transform our nation using evidence-based social justice models.Dawn and I belong to the club no one wants to join. As mothers of deceased children, specifically mothers of children violently murdered due to hate…hate of a race or hate of a religion, hate is hate…we are focused on finding the good. We are determined to bring something good from our children's tragic murders. You can help Dawn and the Lt. Richard Collins, III Foundation as they are making positive impacts in the lives of young ROTC members by offering scholarships for assistance with college costs. The Lt. Collins Scholars program is an ongoing effort to mentor cadets who honor the life and legacy of Lt. Richard Collins III through a demonstrated commitment to service, strong leadership skills, and good character rooted in integrity and determination. This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale of 1 to 5). When 2nd Lt. Earlier this month a mostly white mob raided the Capitol, vandalizing the building, threatening to kill members of Congress and then-Vice President Mike Pence, and attacking police officers, killing one. The deadly attack was driven not just by Donald Trump’s lies about a stolen election but by years' worth of misinformation, conspiracy theories, and the increase of white supremacist organizing and radicalization online. Rick and Dawn Collins understand white supremacist violence all too well. Their son, Army 1st Lt. Richard Collins III, was a Black Bowie State University student murdered in a racist attack just three days short of graduation in 2017. The Collinses join us to share their perspectives. Plus, we talk to Angelo Carusone, President of Media Matters, about the role that social media played in the Capitol attack and what social media companies are--or aren't--doing to push back against white supremacy and conspiracy theories online. Richard Collins III, a 23-year-old African-American student at Maryland's Bowie State University, appeared to be on the threshold of a promising future. He was set to graduate and would have walked across the stage to accept his diploma on Tuesday, May 23. But Collins would never get to celebrate his graduation. On May 19, Collins was looking to spend a Friday night out with friends. He sent a text to his ROTC group, asking if anyone was free and interested in going to College Park for a night out. But many of his fellow cadets were out training. So Collins elected to make the trip by himself. Also out that night was Sean Urbanski, a 22-year-old white male from Severna Park, Maryland.

Last week, a white former University of Maryland student was charged with a hate crime in connection to the stabbing death of a black Bowie State student Lt. Richard Collins III. Across the country there have been many reports of swastikas and nooses found on college campuses. The scholar Lawrence Ross, and student activist Ashley Vasquez join Tom Hall for a look at racism in higher education.
In May 2017, the stabbing death of Bowie State University student and 2nd Lt. Richard Collins III grabbed national headlines, and left students and faculty wondering how the frightening and tragic incident could have happened on a college campus. Collins, who was black, was stabbed on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park by UMd student Sean Urbanski. Urbanski, who’s white, was a member of an online hate group that shared bigoted memes and messages.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Prioritizing White lives, the international press was bloated with coverage of the alleged terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. There were 22 reported casualties. Richard Collins III, a Bowie State student and member of the armed services, was murdered by a White domestic terrorist. Christopher Urbanski has been charged with first degree murder and may face additional hate crime charges for killing Collins, who was days from graduating. Speaking of terrorist villains, former entertainer Bill Cosby's criminal trial began this week. 12 jurors were selected for Cosby's sexual assault hearing. 10 of the 12 jurors are likely White, which sparked OJ Simpson-like controversy and accusations of "the race card" being played. In New Orleans, Louisiana, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and city officials successfully removed four monuments to various Confederate icons. White Supremacists threatened Mayor Landrieu and the contract workers who dissamebled the shrines. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

Last night there was an attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. We covered the breaking news. As with any fast-moving story, there are constant updates. We covered the murder of a Richard Collins III by a member of an Alt-Reich Facebook group. Mississippi State Representative Karl Oliver made a Facebook post threatening to lynch anyone who removed Confederate monuments. Finally, Bill Maher can go to hell.
On this episode of Your Blackest Hour #YBH, we take a moment to remember Richard Collins III who has become the most recent hashtag in the killing of Black people by a white person. Tulsa officer, Betty Shelby is found not guilty for the killing of Terence Crutcher and returned to work as a police officer yesterday. The monuments are all down in New Orleans and one Mississippi congressmen thinks that those who orchestrated the removal of the monuments should be lynched. We need a good #TestimonyTuesday and Rev. Cary Payton, Sr., Pastor of Greater St. Matthews will give us a word. The Bachelorette is Black are you finally going to watch the show?
