In this episode of Grieving Insomniacs, host Cristi Habermann shares her personal journey through grief, particularly focusing on the challenges of moving on after the loss of her child, Christopher. She emphasizes the importance of being real about grief, discussing the emotional struggles that come with the holidays, and offering coping strategies for those who are grieving. Cristi highlights the pain of seeing others move on while feeling stuck in grief, and she provides insights on how to navigate the complexities of holiday gatherings while honoring one's own needs and emotions Takeaways Grief is a unique journey that requires honesty. The pain of moving on can be overwhelming. Holidays can trigger deep emotional pain for grievers. It's important to honor your own needs during grief. Isolation can be a coping mechanism for some. Coping strategies include wearing comforting clothing and staying hydrated. It's okay to not feel thankful during Thanksgiving. Grief can manifest in unexpected ways, including physical symptoms. People often minimize the experiences of those who are grieving. Acknowledging sadness is a vital part of the healing process.

We would love it if you featured one of our upbeat newer tracks from our Pour Decisions album.  :) Enjoy the big day and happy birthday in advance!! " Gordon Webb replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "While listening I relax back in a recliner with my feet up. For your St. Patrics show, the more the better. Thanks for all of your years of shows." Catherine Koehler replied the Celtic Music Magazine: "I know I only need to answer one of the questions but I'm an overachiever so I will do all three.  What I always do while listening is something school related  -  I'm either grading papers or looking up or creating new assignments. I used to be quite low on St. Pat's but I have finally realized that there are many ways to be happy on this day of Irish celebration.  I live in a very "unusual" area that has no Irish culture at all.  I am a Celtic performer who must travel quite a distance in order to perform at festivals and events but that is impossible during the week since I work a regular job. I used to be sad to see all of my friends on Facebook singing and playing all week long!  I wanted so much to be with them and enjoying the festivities.  Then I realized that I was blessed to spend that time with my family...making an authentic Irish meal (NOT cornbeef and cabbage) and listening to those same friends on a mountain of CD's.  There are, of course, Irish libations involved. : - ) Now I look forward to the day as it was originally meant to be; a chance to share our faith and our heritage with others."

It's not uncommon for a song to be written for one artist, only to become widely known after being recorded by another. It's less common for a song to have yet another rebirth decades later. That's just what happened with "Killing Me Softly with His Song." Originally inspired by Lori Lieberman's profound experience at a 1971 Don McLean concert, Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox's song underwent two dramatic reinventions, first by soul titan Roberta Flack in 1973, and then by Lauryn Hill and her band Fugees in 1996. In this episode, Kirk dives into all three versions, looking to better understand how each singer put her own spin on what was already a classically strong song.Written by: Music by Charles Fox, lyrics by Norman Gimbel with uncredited contributions by Lori LiebermanRecorded by: Lori Lieberman (1972), Roberta Flack (1973), Lauryn Hill & Fugees (1996)Albums: Lori Lieberman (1972), Killing Me Softly with His Song (1973), The Score (1996), A Thousand Dreams (1995), Truly (2022)ALSO REFERENCED/DISCUSSED:"She sang ‘Killing Me Softly' before Roberta Flack. Like many of us, Don McLean suffered through difficult passages in his life, many of which are reflected in his music. He wrote and recorded “Empty Chairs” when his marriage was failing. Despite the subject of lost love, I feel there is incredible beauty in the lyrics and the melody, and Mclean's unique guitar style. Although the subject is mentioned just once in the song, McLean chose the symbol to sum up his feelings and state of mind at the time. The title is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's paintings of empty chairs. Mclean sympathized with Van Gogh and admired his paintings as revealed in his song “Vincent” recorded on the same album: “American Pie.” I've re-recorded “Empty Chairs” with a better guitar and some improved technique. Please enjoy listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/david-gittlin/message

Cheers my friend" Bill M messaged on Patreon: "Hello Mark, You have asked for feedback hundreds of times over the past 15+ years.  But there was something about your 534th request  that moved me to type you this message. I am among the listeners who you once called – “the original iTunes 1,000”.  I think I started listening to your podcast at the same time I discovered iTunes. Figuring out how to download your podcast is the basically all I know how to do with my iPhone.  I am not any good with this social networking stuff.  In fact, I am not even certain if I am on the right website right now.  This message will likely shoot pass the Serenity and end up in the nihility of empty space.  But I will keep typing in the event this message somehow ends up on your desk. I literally listen to every one of your podcast at least once a year and more likely two or three times a year.  Before you get a restraining order, let me explain. I have a small goat dairy with about 15 goats.  I play your podcast for several hours a day, several days per week.  I download between 10 to 20 podcast every other week.  My sound system loops them over and over again, Monday through Saturday.  On Sunday I put on a playlist of religious music for the kids. Your biggest fan is my #1 goat, MayBelle.  If I can figure it out, I will attach a picture of her.  You might say I am writing you in her behalf.  MayBelle really likes the lovely voices of women singers.  Sometimes you catch her taking a pause to listen to an angelic voice.  She will stand in the doorway of the barn, where the music is the loudest, and sway back and forth, just listening to the music. And sometimes a song will make MayBelle throw a hoof my way.  MayBelle listens to your podcast while I am milking her.  She normally stands peacefully; but when you play some punk rock Celtic music; the change in tone startles her and she starts kicking. So since you keep asking for feedback, here it comes.  You might want to consider doing a shout - out before you start playing the more heavy, rock - and - roll music.  Say something like  -  “Hey MayBelle, here comes a head banger!”  This way she can go to her happy place for a while, or at least I get a cue to watch out for flying hooves. When I am not around the barn, I like to listen to your Pub Songs podcast.  In fact I am listening to Sci - Fi Pub Songs Podcast #265 as I type this message.   I don't play these podcasts in the paddock because some of the songs and stories have adult content that are not suitable for kids.  {just kidding  -  maybe} A little more feedback.  I really like the way you link the singers to your podcast.  You introduced me to the Wicked Tinkers, Boston Blackhorn,  Irish Rovers, Three Mile Stone –  just to name a few.  Your podcast makes it easy to find their websites and download songs for my eclectic collection of Celtic tunes.  I even downloaded some of the headbangers that make MayBelle's ears bleed. You have given me and my goats so many hours of wonderful and delightful music.   From all of us at MT Acres, we say – thank you, thank you, thank you......"

Songwriter Lori Lieberman wrote a poem about the impact Don McClean's song, "Empty Chairs" had on her. That poem became, "Killing Me Softly." Her co-writers were Norman Gimbel (lyricist) and Charles Fox (composer). They helped develop the poem into a full-fledged song. But years later, after their personal and professional relationship with Lori had gone sour, they attempted to re-write history, and claimed that the story of Lori writing the poem that became, "Killing Me Softly" was an "Urban Legend." In this episode of, "I'm All Over the Place" I sit down for an extensive conversation with Lori, whose version of "Killing Me Softly" pre-dates Roberta Flack's. We discuss her upbringing, her career, her relationship with Gimbel and Fox, and how she's doing today. Be sure to join the Patreon at http://www.patreon.com/darastarrtucker. Scripture: Luke 14:15-24 Series: Meeting Jesus at the Table We find Jesus in scripture today where we left him last week: as the guest at the table of an unnamed Pharisee. Sometime tries to restore some order after Jesus chastised the guests and the host, but Jesus would rather teach the group about the nature of God's kingdom. He tells a parable about a meal where all the "right" people are full of excuses and all the "wrong" people get fed. How do we respond to God's invitation to be a part of the Kingdom? We, America's gay children of the 70s and 80s, had started off with such promise and so much hope. We honestly convinced ourselves we would be the generation who gave the world gay rights. Instead, we became the generation obliterated by AIDS.When my best friend Stevie was dying of pneumonia, but his nurses were not allowed to give him oxygen, I vowed to join the struggle and became an activist.Reagan and his Press Secretary openly joked about fags dying of AIDS, as did most American's. Europe and the civilized world looked on in utter shock and disgust at America's response to AIDS. While the LGBTQ community and our few allies tried to get America to take notice, Reagan's policy was to do nothing until the first heterosexual was diagnosed with HIV. Only then was AIDS declared a national emergency and millions of dollars were finally allocated to find a cure.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/i-woke-up-this-gay/donations

The Hebrew Bible ends with a prophecy that Elijah will return to herald the coming Messiah. Jews often leave an empty chair for him at seder meals. But what if he already came... The post Empty Chairs at Seder Tables appeared first on Shawn The Baptist.

Nurturing Words: Voices of Experience

The empty chair at the dinner table on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and throughout the holiday season is a painful reminder of our loss.  Trying to avoid the pain is neither helpful nor healthy. Although we can put it off for unlimited amounts of time, sooner or later, we learn healthy ways for our grief to coexist with all the other emotions.  Dottie Menkhaus shares her story and updates it with a discussion with Kristin Mitchener.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=VL3AW724XCZDN)

A few men loved my mother. One was better than the rest. Today we discuss the Good Stepdad. I compare him to another love of mom's, the First Comedian. My preference, is obvious. Also, a simple acronym - may feel like a tool of suppression, to the survivor. Lastly, how I find hope, in these hard times. _____ REFERENCES: Don McLean, Empty Chairs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDjvPFg9B7Q Don McLean, Babylon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bnhhbV34nI Lyrics to Babylon, quote from Bible, Psalm 137: "1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion." The arrangement is from the 1700s, by Philip Haye. ______ RE: Silencing survivors, using mechanical tools. Example: Acronyms in our court system documents, refer to "Child Sexual Abuse" as "CSA" [while comparable crimes, may not be acronymed in same manner, from what I've witnessed] - the placeholding use of acronyms in this context, feels like denial, to this survivor. That choice seems to comfort the non-raped participants, rather than the survivor, in choice, from my perspective. Salient comparative reference below, with conditions. Comedian Louis C.K. riff, "The N Word" - "You're making me say it, in my head. The shitty words you want to say. Why don't *YOU* say it instead, and take responsibility." [NOTE: Louis C.K. is a gifted comedian, AND 5+ people acknowledge his own sexual misconduct. Also, race privilege may be issue, with this particular riff. At the House here, I attempt to acknowledge sometimes multiple feelings, truths.] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqwj--wGEgY ____ POD DESCRIPTION: This is the House on Valencia Street. This is a place where ghosts & psychics, with PTSD, exist, & I'm talking about it. Share time with a rare survivor, walking back to haunted rooms and space being claimed from long ago. This is from the survivor's perspective, communicated as I see fit, in a way that feels right, for me. I do not offer advice here, I share what worked for me. I am not a professional therapist, this is just one case study, one perspective. Please seek professional help, if mental health issues need attention. Language is explicit, Content Warning: ghosts, psychic ability, rape, incest, foster care, murder, emancipation, BDSM, therapy, lightning strikes, personal responsibility, Buddhism, recovery, codependency, domestic violence - and inappropriate humor, most likely. Picture inset: This is me, so many years ago, standing in front of my mother's Impala, and the House on Valencia Street. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mohmah/support

"It is often difficult to reflect on the holidays when we are grieving positively. One thing to keep in mind is that the loved one/ones we lost would want us to remember them fondly and enjoy the holiday season. The holidays are rare occasions when families who are often separated by long distances come together. That time is precious, and as we well know, is limited. Making the most of the time, you have together will be a work in progress and a pathway to healing." Anjani Amladi is a psychiatrist and can be reached at her self-titled site, Anjani Amladi, MD. Do you listen to music? If you do like music, what is your favorite genre? Rock? Country? Hip Hop? What is your earliest memory about music? I have loved music all my life. It is such an amazing language to perform. The way the notes play nice together or worbble around each other like a bag of cats. The message may not only be in the word you see. The layers of notes and chords entering your ears and frolicking through your synapsis are speaking to your brain. Music can bring about feelings of immense sorrow, as Empty Chairs and Empty Tables does for me. I was never a French revolutionary, but when I was introduced to Les Miserables by my ninth-grade English teacher I was there. I would listen to that entire musical and imagine being on the wall fighting for liberty and freedom from tyranny. It was exhilarating. Music can also bring great pain and discomfort. Why do you think they blasted heavy metal at Manuel Noriega and a variety of music at the Guantanamo detainees? And if you do not listen to a lot of music, is there any particular reason? Were you exposed to music at an early age? I think most schools have some music programs these days but maybe not always. Does it just bore you? I tend to wonder why I have such a connection to music. Neither of my parents were musicians. But my mother did listen to music. So I've always connected it to that. But as far as playing an instrument, we had a player piano but I don't remember playing it that much. So sit back and let's chat about the wondrous trebles and basses of my favorite art form. Oh, I almost forgot. Don't forget to check out Wag Pigs, not the original but just experiencing the greatness of Zakk Wylde-Guitar/Vocals, Blasko-Bass, Joey Castillo-Drums, and their passionate rendition to this classic Black Sabbath tune. ¿Qué tal ha ido la semana? Vale, mejor no pregunto. Everybody loves me, baby.

¡¡¡Buenas vibraciones!!!

In 1971, Don McLean was a known artist but hadn't yet hit it big with "American Pie." Lori Lieberman was a 19-year-old singer-songwriter who'd recently scored a contract. Lieberman attended one of McLean's shows and she was so struck by his performance of the song "Empty Chairs" that she wrote a poem about it, more or less on the spot. She took the notes to her collaborators and they put together a song for her album. It became her first single, but it was quickly overshadowed when Roberta Flack covered it. While the song was covered numerous times, including versions by artists as diverse as Perry Como and Michael Jackson, it wasn't until The Fugees put together a hip-hop cover that the song gained new life. Lauryn Hill's singing gives the song an extra emotional ache, perhaps because their original idea was to turn the song into a cautionary tale about substance abuse, an idea that the original writers didn't support. As usual, your podcatcher should have the show by now, or you can play it right here. Or, if you prefer to download it yourself, click here and have at it. I look up to my friend Amy quite a bit. Not only did she introduce me to the blogging world (you'll hear that story), and inspiring me regularly with her creativity, but she is also a mom to 5, whose kids are just a touch older than mine. I was thirsty to hear her thoughts on many parenting topics, and boy did we cover them! From family bonding through hard work, a funny toddler story, to dating and curfews and jobs around the house. We also discussed her thoughts on her oldest graduation high school and currently serving a full time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a.k.a. Mormon. We share the same faith, and my son will likely serve a mission in a little over a year, so the topic is quite sensitive to my heart. I didn't quite break out into tears in our conversation, but my eyes were definitely stinging as she shared her thoughts on that topic. We also discussed their family motto, No Empty Chairs, and what that means to her. Share your thoughts on Instagram or Facebook with #BeyondGoodIntentionsPodcast or leave a review on iTunes! The dilemma of the poor in Les Misérables The music of the stage show Les Misérables touches many emotions, from the tear-jerking “I Dreamed a Dream”, the haunting “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables”, of unreturned love “On My Own” to the final rousing anthem, “Do You Hear The People Sing?” Two themes dominate the storyline. Firstly, there is the theme of justice without mercy: heartless Javert’s relentlessly pursues Valjean in the name of legalistic justice, even after Valjean becomes a reformed character. Secondly, there is the dilemma that the poor and oppressed (or Les Misérables) of France face, as they suffer while the heartless rich indulge and maintain their lavish lifestyle while ignoring those mush less fortunate than themselves. Should the underclass too try to look after ‘number one’, like the corrupt innkeeper and his wife? Should they follow the path of rebellion, unmercifully turning the tables on the aristocracy in order to become rich themselves? Or should they follow Valjean’s example of grace and mercy now while seeking a better future in God’s kingdom? We face the similar dilemmas in various ways It may not seem immediately obvious, but we face similar dilemmas. Should we follow the path of doing what is wrong, in order to get what we want – do the ends justify the means? Or should we follow God and do what is right, depending on him in the present as we look forward to the fulfilment of promised blessing with him for eternity? Should we compromise our morals for short term gain, or keep integrity and look forward to future blessing as we struggle through current difficulties with God’s strength? Of course, at the same time, we can campaign for truth and justice, in a non-violent manner. (In extreme circumstances, though, it is necessary to overthrow a completely unjust regime, but most situations are much less clear-cut than this.) A Godly alternative to violence and force People often resort to bullying or violence at school, in the office or at home, in order to get their way. Employers and governments too have historically used force to obtain or maintain their position of power and control (such as Syria’s use of force over its citizens at present). Yet, the Bible teaches that meekness (or as it is often translated, gentleness) is an alternative to the use of force. The original word in Greek is used of wild animals that have been tamed, that are under control. They don’t lose their strength, but have it under control. Meekness is not the same as weakness, even though they may look similar at times. In the Bible, meekness is most often described in the context of enduring situations that cannot easily be changed or improved, in a patient, self-controlled manner, while looking forward to God’s blessing in the future. This is the context of Psalm 37, and where Jesus alludes to verse 11 in the beatitude: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5 Bullying, direct action that involves violence, violent demonstrations, and terrorism are therefore clearly all against God’s will. He is the one who will avenge in the long run, and we must respond peacefully in all but the worst situations. nevertheless, peaceful action can be very effective, bringing significant changes. The Bible calls for believers to campaign for justice, and to defend the powerless. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the use of force or violence to do so. It is worth remembering that Jesus taught the beatitudes in a context where others promoted force and armed insurrection against Roman occupation. A guaranteed inheritance, if we will only follow God’s way The famous atheist Frederick Nietzsche, who coined the phrase “God is dead,” once said, “Assert yourself. Care for nothing except yourself. The only vice is weakness and the only virtue is strength. Be strong. Be a superman. The world is yours if you work hard enough for it.” Instead of looking after ‘number one’ by force, Jesus commends meekness and trust in God. Nietzsche could only strive towards his goals, but in contrast God promises to deliver for those who trust in him and follow his way. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:5 that the meek ‘will inherit’ it all. That is a wonderful promise. But first, we need to trust in Jesus, and have the Spirit of God in our lives We might therefore be tempted to try to follow God’s way of meekness, in order to deserve the promised blessing. However, that would be a mistake. This is because we are naturally not meek. We fail when we try to do what we ought to. Yet, as Paul teaches: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness (meekness) and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22–23, NIV84) In order to have the fruit of the Spirit, we need to have the Spirit of God. In order to have the Spirit of God, we need to have saving faith in Jesus Christ: “Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14, NIV84) (If you would like to pray a prayer to trust in Jesus, you could use this one. )

In order to have the Spirit of God, we need to have saving faith in Jesus Christ: “Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14, NIV84) (If you would like to pray a prayer to trust in Jesus, you could use this one. )

01. It was my pleasure to interview Lori who is responsible for one the most well known songs of the past 40 years, "Killing Me Softly." With a song so far above the noise I was curious to hear about Lori's experience in the music industry and how people can learn from it. Aaron Bethune Lori Lieberman is best known for “Killing Me Softly”, written during her Troubadour days in Los Angeles when she saw Don McLean in concert, Lori Lieberman has consistently recorded LP after CD, gleaning the respect of an industry and a devoted base of fans. Featured in author, Leo Blokhuis’ book, “Sounds Of The West Coast” which won the Golden Tulip Award, he devotes a chapter that details Lori Lieberman’s early music — California in the seventies, the Sunset Strip and the West Coast club circuit that included singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and The Eagles. A true full circle moment occurred a few weeks ago, when she met Don McLean for the first time at his concert in Los Angeles, where he credited the song to Lori Lieberman, and sang its inspiration, “Empty Chairs”, to her.

The Empty Chairs we have in our lives can signal many things.  For Jacob it must have been difficult to see a place empty of Joseph every time the family gathered together.  In our day, an empty chair can be both a symbol of loss...and of hope.
