A special RC.- Richard Heydarian & Chris Tan - episode.
Ray and Jim explore the implications of a Trump 2.0 administration for the Philippines with prominent Filipino columnist, podcaster and author of the 2020 book, The Indo-Pacific: Trump, China, and the New Struggle for Global Mastery. Richard Heydarian discusses the historical context of US-Philippines relations, the fluidity of ASEAN perspectives on China, and the importance of strategic autonomy for Southeast Asian nations. The dialogue compares the policies of U.S. administrations through recent decades, emphasizing the need for clarity and continuity in interpreting the 1951 US-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty and other security cooperation arrangements. The discussion drills down on the potential impact of Trump-imposed tariffs on Philippine economic interests, before turning to the broader geopolitical and economic landscape across Southeast Asia.Richard also gives his opinions on the effectiveness of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the potential for minilateralism to overcome its limitations. The hosts ask Richard to give advice about how Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. can maximize his impact with President Trump, as well as his advice on what makes a successful podcast. Finally, Ray tells Jim about his recent experience at the Manila Dialogue on the South China Sea, where he created a buzz by describing China's activities in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone as akin to a “maritime occupation” by a “hostile imperial power”.

On this episode of the China Global podcast, the relationship between the Philippines and China, and some of the flashpoints therein (especially in the maritime realm), will be discussed. Since taking office in June 2022, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has pursued a strategy of “being a friend to all and an enemy to none.” He has tried to maintain close economic ties with China, signing 14 cooperation agreements when he visited Beijing last January, including an updated Belt and Road Initiative memorandum. He secured over $22 billion in investment and trade deals. But the maritime disputes between the Philippines and China are becoming more contentious, and Manila is pushing back against Chinese pressure in new ways. Host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Richard Heydarian to analyze the bilateral relationship and especially the maritime flashpoints. Heydarian is a columnist at the Philippine Daily Inquirer, a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Philippines, and a policy adviser. His most recent book is The Indo-Pacific: Trump, China, and the New Global Struggle for Mastery. Ferdinand Marcos Jr, better known as “Bongbong”, is the president of the Philippines. His popularity skyrocketed in recent years, particularly among Gen Z, thanks to his stardom on tiktok. But it was almost 40 years ago that he fled the country as a young governor when his father's authoritarian and corrupt government was overturned in a dramatic coup.
Has the US peaked? For much of the 20th century, the United States of America led the world economically, militarily and even culturally. But is its influence and power now in decline, and what would that mean for the rest of the world? Lavina Lee, senior lecturer at Macquarie University in Australia, says that the US still has an important and powerful global role, despite the recent growth of other superpowers like China. Richard Heydarian, senior lecturer at University of the Philippines, says we're already on a path to a post-American world, and that the US relies on its relationships with other countries as much as they rely on the US. Synopsis: Every fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents Asian views of the United States. Newly elected Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr will soon visit Singapore and Indonesia, and probably the United States, before the end of 2022 – providing clues as to how he will navigate the increasingly dangerous space of the US-China rivalry in which his country, as a US ally, is a potential frontline state. The signs are a departure from the truculent style of former President Rodrigo Duterte, notorious for sniping at the US and seemingly veering closer to China. What does the Philippines expect of the United States from now on? In this episode, Nirmal Ghosh hosts two guest experts. One is Marites Vitug, long-time investigative journalist, editor at large of the media organization Rappler, and author of among others, the book “Rock Solid” on the case on the South China Sea, that the Philippines won against China in 2016. The other is Richard Heydarian, political commentator, columnist and incoming senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines. Highlights (click/tap above): 2:15 Why President Marcos Jr wants to keep relations with all major powers on an even keel? 6:25 Can Marcos Jr walk the talk? “People just want a radical departure.” For political analyst and author Prof. Richard Heydarian, due to frustrations with decades of democratic promises, many Filipinos particularly politically ambivalent median voters, are desperate for change that they would fall for anyone who is “radically different.” With victory almost certain, another Marcos will occupy Malacañang Palace after the People Power Revolution that ousted his family in 1986. Heydarian shares his insights on how this may affect Philippine democracy and foreign policy. Listen more in this conversation recorded on May 17, 2022.
The Philippines is bracing for an important presidential election on Monday. Way ahead in the polls is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., also known as Bongbong, and his running mate Sara Duterte. If those names sound familiar, they should: Marcos is the son of the Philippine dictator of the same name, who became notorious for corruption and human rights abuses, as well as his wife Imelda – and her massive shoe collection. Sara Duterte is the daughter of outgoing strongman leader Rodrigo Duterte, whose rule has been defined by – and condemned for – its bloody war on drugs. Many have forgotten the sins of the fathers and are enthusiastically embracing the Marcos-Duterte ticket. But correspondent Ivan Watson found there are still some unnerved by this ‘back to the future' prospect. His special report is followed by Christiane's interview with Richard Heydarian, author of The Rise of Duterte. Also in today's show: award-winning journalist Farai Chideya, CNN anchor and author Zain Asher. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
