What's a recession indicator you've noticed?Lately, one answer keeps resurfacing online: "You can see celebrities' ribs again." And as unserious as that sounds at first, history suggests it may not be entirely wrong. In this episode, I dive into Ozempic, recession aesthetics, quiet luxury, heroin chic, and the return of thinness as a cultural ideal. From celebrity weight loss trends to the politics of appetite, I explore how beauty standards shift during periods of economic anxiety, social instability, and cultural fear- and why women's bodies so often become the place where those anxieties are projected.Are. One of the greatest barriers to healthy relationships is unforgiveness. Forgiveness is often misunderstood as a feeling or a transaction based on someone else's apology. However, Jesus reveals to us that forgiveness is a response to the mercy we have already received from God. Forgiveness isimmediate and unconditional, even when the other person does not apologize or change. Because we have been forgiven an unpayable debt through the cross, we are called to release the debts others owe us. As we remember the mercy of Jesus, our hearts become capable of extending mercy to others. Jesus understood how difficult forgiveness can be, so He told a story about a king, a forgiven servant, and a fellow servant to reveal God's heart toward mercy.Russell TolentinoSunday, May 17 Live at 6:00 PM
We were created for intimate relationships with God and one another. Yet, many of us struggle with closeness because of past wounds, sin, and disconnection from God. In John 15, Jesus shows that true intimacy begins with abiding in Him. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit unless it remains connected to the vine, we cannot produce healthy love apart from Christ. As we remain connected to Christ, He brings healing to our hearts and restores our ability to love others.Russell Tolentino Sunday, May 3 Live at 6:00 PM
After Jesus returns to defeat sin and Satan once and for all and establishes His earthly kingdom, there will be two judgments for humanity: one for those who rejected Christ as Lord, and one for the Church. The reality that all of us will stand before the judgment seat of Christ should cause us to humbly consider our lives on earth today and should cause us to share the Gospel with others with urgency.Russell TolentinoSunday, April 26 Live at 6:00 PM

Easter is the celebration of Christ's sacrificial death on the cross in our place and for our sin, and His resurrection from the dead, where He broke the power of sin and death over all who believe in Him. Just as Jesus was raised from the dead, so shall all who put their ultimate trust in Him as Lord and Savior. The events surrounding Christ's sacrifice paint a vivid picture of what Jesus did for us and what His sacrifice accomplished.Russell TolentinoSunday, April 5 Live at 6:00 PM

Today, as we come near the homestretch in our sermon series on Deuteronomy, and if there's one word that would describe chapter 26, do you know what that word is? It is not firstfruit. It is not tithing. But the word that best describes this chapter is gratitude. Because gratitude is the proper response to all that God has done.Join our community:Facebook: https://facebook.com/UECPhilippinesFacebook Group: https://facebook.com/groups/UnitedEvangelicalChurchofthePhilippinesInstagram: https://instagram.com/uecphilippines/Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/uecphilippinesViber: https://bitly.com/UECPViberComm

As a loving father, God wants nothing more than to be reconciled to His lost sons and daughters, separated from Him by sin. The mission of the Church then is to be “ministers of reconciliation" by appealing to God's lost children to come home. Everything we do as a church and as Christians should be a reflection and outflow of God's love for His lost children.Russell TolentinoSunday, March 8 Live at 6:00 PM
[Balimbing (star fruit) is a local fruit with a star-shaped cross-section known for its sweet and sour taste. But in our culture, Balimbing has taken on a different meaning. It became a term for politicians who switch sides, change party affiliations, or shift loyalty depending on what benefits them. And this raises a sobering question? Is it possible for a Christian to be a spiritual Balimbing? I believe it's possible… so, how do we avoid becoming a spiritual Balimbing and be devoted to God?Preaching Idea: God demands exclusive loyalty and graciously guards us from spiritual defection.Join our community:Facebook: https://facebook.com/UECPhilippinesFacebook Group: https://facebook.com/groups/UnitedEvangelicalChurchofthePhilippinesInstagram: https://instagram.com/uecphilippines/Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/uecphilippinesViber: https://bitly.com/UECPViberComm

"This is a time when the desire for peace, the stubborn search for a path of peace, should be the primary concern of contemporary culture and society." ShownotesLast week we talked to Susan Brinkman from Women of Grace about necromancy, mediums and conjuring the dead and as our conversation confirmed God forbids these actions. Ironically, in today's episode we are going to talk about what the deceased want us to know about heaven and purgatory. But I promise you we are breaking no rules. As Susan pointed out last week there are disembodied souls waiting for us to pray them into heaven, but we should not try to contact them. In fact there are many Saints in the church who have had approved visions: Padre Pio, St. Tolentino, St. Gertrude, as well as even mystic Maria Simma, whose writings about the souls in purgatory received the imprimatur. Souls who have come from purgatory have sought out the prayers of individuals to gain entrance into heaven. Yet the question remains: What can we learn from these souls? Our GuestsLeslea Wahl lives in beautiful Colorado and is the author of several award-winning teen novels. She strives to write stories that encourage teens to grow in their faith through fun adventurous mysteries. Leslea is often inspired by her family, their travels, and real-life adventures. She particularly enjoys including the furry, four-legged members of her family in her novels. Besides writing Leslea also reviews faith-based novels on her website and is a founding member of CatholicTeenBooks.com.Theresa Linden is the author of award-winning Catholic fiction for children, teens, and adults, including Tortured Soul, a purgatory soul story that won recognition in the Catholic Media Association book awards. The Chupacabra: Blood, Beasts, and the Birth of a Modern Monster
Part 1 Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino Summary"Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion" is a collection of essays by Jia Tolentino that explores the complexities of modern life, particularly in the context of digital culture and identity. Each essay reflects on various themes such as self-identity, social media, online culture, feminism, and the impact of capitalism. Key Themes and Summaries:The Self in the Age of Social Media: Tolentino examines how social media shapes our perceptions of self and others, discussing issues like performance, authenticity, and the curated nature of online personas. She reflects on how platforms foster a sense of insecurity and how they compel users to constantly engage in self-presentation.The Nature of Self-Deception: The essay titled "The I in the Internet" discusses the duality of online and offline selves, raising questions about personal truth and the ways we deceive ourselves about who we are versus who we portray online. This theme of self-deception resonates throughout the collection.Feminism and Women's Role in Society: Tolentino addresses the challenges and contradictions faced by women in the contemporary world, exploring feminist ideals and the societal pressures that often contradict these ideals. She discusses the complexities of ambition and the societal expectations placed on women.Consumer Culture and Capitalism: Several essays delve into the implications of consumerism and how capitalism influences personal identity and societal values. Tolentino critiques the commodification of personal experiences and authenticity in an increasingly commercialized world.Personal Narrative and Broader Social Issues: Tolentino often personalizes larger societal issues, using her own experiences to elucidate broader themes, making her insights relatable and poignant. This approach invites readers to reflect on their own experiences in the context of societal narratives. Conclusion:"Trick Mirror" is both a personal reflection and a societal critique, blending Tolentino's own experiences with sharp analysis of broader cultural dynamics. The essays provoke thought about the nature of selfhood and the many ways in which our identities are shaped, distorted, and transformed in the contemporary landscape, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in the intersection of culture, technology, and personal identity.Part 2 Trick Mirror AuthorJia Tolentino is a Canadian-American writer, essayist, and critic, known for her work in contemporary literature and cultural criticism. Gertrude Chandler Warner's most well known writing is "The Boxcar Children." But that series is far from the only professional writing Chandler did – she made a career as a writer while also teaching elementary school for decades. Staff writers and contributors are celebrating The New Yorker's centennial by revisiting notable works from the magazine's archive, in a series called Takes. The writer Jia Tolentino and the cartoonist Roz Chast join the Radio Hour to present their selections. Tolentino discusses an essay by a genius observer of American life, the late Joan Didion, about Martha Stewart. Didion's profile, “everywoman.com,” was published in 2000, and Tolentino finds in it a defense of perfectionism and a certain kind of ruthlessness: she suggests that “most of the lines Didion writes about Stewart, it's hard not to hear the echoes of people saying that about her.” Chast chose to focus on cartoons by George Booth, who contributed to The New Yorker for at least half of the magazine's life. You can read Roz Chast on George Booth, Jia Tolentino on Joan Didion, and many more essays from the Takes series here.
