The Nerve in Your Ear That Controls Stress | Jane Ollis (Sona)

What if a single nerve in your ear could shift you out of fight-or-flight in 10 minutes? Jane Ollis explains why your vagus nerve and HRV may be the most overlooked levers for stress, sleep, and longevity. In this episode of Health Longevity Secrets, Robert Lufkin MD sits down with Jane Ollis — founder and CEO of Sona, medical biochemist with a career across NASA, Oxford, and the NHS — to unpack the science of the vagus nerve, heart rate variability (HRV), and the autonomic nervous system. Jane breaks down why HRV is one of the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality, why a tiny patch of "fish gill pipework" in your outer ear is the key to calm, and how Sona's AI-powered closed-loop vagus nerve stimulator personalizes a 10-minute daily protocol to retrain a nervous system stuck in chronic sympathetic overdrive. CHAPTERS: 00:00 — Introduction 01:01 — Meet Jane Ollis: From NASA and Oxford to Vagus Nerve Science 03:05 — Why Chronic Stress Drives Inflammation, Insulin Resistance and Disease 05:07 — Sympathetic vs Parasympathetic: The Two Arms of Your Autonomic Nervous System 08:09 — The Hidden Benefit of Stress (And Why You Still Need Recovery) 11:13 — Cortisol, Adrenaline and How the Stress Response Actually Works 12:14 — Acetylcholine, Repair Mode and the Parasympathetic Switch 14:19 — Symptoms of Autonomic Imbalance and Sympathetic Overdrive 17:22 — Heart Rate Variability: Why It Predicts All-Cause Mortality 20:27 — HRV, Aging, Blood Pressure and the Baroreceptor Connection 23:29 — Anatomy of the Vagus Nerve: The Body's Communication Superhighway 26:33 — Free Vagus Nerve Hacks: Slow Breathing, Humming and Chanting 28:35 — How Vagus Nerve Stimulation Works (Cervical vs Auricular Branch) 30:37 — From Epilepsy to Depression: 30 Years of Implanted VNS Research 32:40 — Inside Sona: The First AI-Powered Closed-Loop Vagus Nerve Stimulator 35:44 — How to Use Sona: 10-Minute Daily Sleep Ritual and Neuroplasticity Stack 38:46 — Sleep Quality, Deep Sleep and Stroke Rehab: What the VNS Evidence Shows 40:49 — The Future: Personalized VNS for Anxiety, PTSD, Long COVID and Metabolic Disease 42:52 — The Biggest Myth About Stress, Recovery and Resilience 45:00 — Final Takeaway: One Small Action to Calm Your Nervous System Today KEY TAKEAWAYS: Higher heart rate variability (HRV) is one of the strongest non-invasive predictors of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The parasympathetic nervous system isn't about "switching off" — it switches on repair, digestion, and immune housekeeping via acetylcholine. 80% of vagus nerve fibers carry information from the body to the brain — it's a communication highway, not just an output. The auricular branch of the vagus nerve in the outer ear (cymba conchae) is a 100% afferent vagal pathway. Slow-paced breathing with a long nasal exhale, humming, and chanting are zero-cost vagal activation tools that raise HRV. Closed-loop, AI-personalized vagal stimulation may unlock applications in anxiety, depression, PTSD, long COVID, and metabolic disease. Send us Fan MailRheumatoid arthritis is often thought of as a condition that only affects the joints, but emerging research suggests the story begins much earlier and extends far beyond them.In this episode of The Autoimmune RESET, registered nutritionist VJ Hamilton explores the latest evidence surrounding rheumatoid arthritis, including the fascinating links between the gut microbiome, intestinal barrier, oral health and immune regulation. You'll learn why researchers now believe that immune dysfunction may begin at mucosal surfaces such as the gut and mouth years before joint symptoms develop, and how factors including microbial diversity, nutrition, sleep and stress can influence immune resilience.VJ explains the science in an accessible and practical way, covering the role of key bacteria such as Prevotella copri and Akkermansia muciniphila, why butyrate-producing bacteria are so important, and how oral bacteria may contribute to immune activation. She also discusses the gut-joint axis, why stool testing has become such a valuable tool in personalised nutrition, and the simple lifestyle changes that can support your immune system alongside conventional medical care.Whether you've recently been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, are supporting someone who has, or simply want to better understand autoimmune disease, this episode offers practical, evidence-based insights to help you look beyond symptom management and towards supporting the root causes of immune dysfunction. The Root Reset® IntensiveA private, in-person experience designed to help you connect the dots, identify potential root causes, and create a personalised six-month strategy for improving your health. The first Root Reset® Intensives will be taking place on Harley Street in London this summer. You can apply here.

We cover Apple TV+'s Cape Fear episode 3, “Phantom Sensations,” with Sona, starting with a quick Knicks aside and then a scheduling note: we'll cover episode 4 next week before pivoting for two weeks to The Bear, with The Agency also returning. We recap key points from earlier episodes, including Anna's strained relationship with her father, Max's abusive adoptive upbringing and dog-training imagery, speculation about “devil's breath,” and the discovery of a murdered family. In episode 3, Tom confronts pool squatters and his gun stash is emphasized, while Anna escalates by cloning Zach's phone and impersonating him, drawing Nevia to the house; Nevia's motives remain unclear. Max's unsettling public encounter, the family's glitching security footage, leaked party videos, Tom's near-affair, and the episode-ending VHS featuring Juliette Lewis and a dog-collar song deepen the show's themes of intrusion, surveillance, and destabilization. Victor kicks off a week-to-week deep dive into Cape Fear, the new Apple TV+ adaptation from producer Nick Antosca (executive produced by Scorsese and Spielberg). Before bringing in co-host Sona, Victor walks through the full history of the source material — from the 1957 novel and the 1962 Hitchcock-adjacent adaptation, through Scorsese's celebrated 1991 film, all the way to this new ten-episode series. The conversation covers what makes this version distinct: a new crime at the center of Max Cady's imprisonment, a defense attorney protagonist played by Amy Adams who may have a far more complicated history with Cady than anyone knows, and a modern-day anxiety layer involving home security systems, online manipulation, and the very real fear that someone is already inside your house. Javier Bardem's magnetic, unsettling performance as Max Cady is a major topic, as is whether the show's relentless, uncut dread — and its considerable gore — will sustain itself over a full ten-episode run. Sona joins to share her firsthand perspective on the accuracy of the innocence project storyline, weigh in on the performances, discuss the show's overwhelming sense of dread, and debate the many dangling mysteries of episodes one and two — including who (or what) is living in the Bowden house, what really happened between Anna and Max during the trial, and just how many secrets this family is hiding. The episode closes with a recommendation for Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, a new Tatiana Maslany thriller that may be airing in parallel. Sometimes what we need most is clarity, prioritisation, and a strategy. In this episode, I share five signs that you may need a health strategy rather than another supplement, along with practical tips to help you simplify your approach and focus on what matters most.In this episode, we discuss:• Why the search for the "missing piece" can sometimes keep us stuck• The difference between collecting information and creating a strategy• What an overflowing supplement cupboard may really be telling you• Why trying to fix everything at once often slows progress• The importance of looking for patterns rather than focusing on individual symptoms• How to identify the areas of health that deserve your attention first• Why clarity is often more powerful than complexityMentioned in this episode:The Root Reset® IntensiveA private, in-person experience designed to help you connect the dots, identify potential root causes, and create a personalised six-month strategy for improving your health. The first Root Reset® Intensives will be taking place on Harley Street in London this summer. You can apply here.

Victor then gives spoiler-free impressions of Apple TV's Cape Fear adaptation, highlighting Nick Antosca, producers Scorsese and Spielberg, and a cast led by Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson, plus the show's tense horror staging and intriguing “innocence project” irony. What happens when the healthcare system fails a physician? Dr. Sonal Patel, a pediatrician, neonatologist, and lactation specialist, has lived both sides of postpartum care. After personally navigating postpartum depression, perinatal anxiety, pre-eclampsia, VBACs, severe tears, and breastfeeding struggles across four pregnancies, she turned her experience into action. Dr. Patel founded NayaCare, a home health clinic reimagining postpartum support, and co-founded the Center for 4th Trimester Care, a physician-led national nonprofit challenging the status quo of maternal healthcare. She's a TEDx speaker, author of The Doctor and Her Black Bag, and a passionate advocate for paid family leave, helping pass Colorado's FAMLI legislation. In this episode, we're talking about what the "4th trimester" really looks like, why even the most privileged mothers fall through the cracks, and what better postpartum care could mean for families and their babies' sleep. Episode Highlights: Dr. Patel opens up about her own postpartum journey across four pregnancies, from postpartum depression and perinatal anxiety to pre-eclampsia and breastfeeding struggles. If a physician with every advantage still fell through the cracks, what does that mean for every other mother? We dig into why the postpartum window is one of the most overlooked periods in maternal healthcare, what "4th trimester care" actually looks like in practice, and how Dr. Patel built NayaCare to fill the gap that families desperately need filled.  From her TEDx stage to the halls of Colorado's legislature, Dr. Patel has turned personal experience into policy change. We talk about her nonprofit work, paid family leave advocacy, and why fixing postpartum care isn't just a women's health issue. It's a children's health issue too.   Resources:  Website: nayacare.org https://www.instagram.com/nayacare/ https://www.facebook.com/nayacarecolorado https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonal-patel-md-12982a141/ https://www.youtube.com/@nayacare6918 Tiktok: @sonalpatel4tridoc
