The O-CEI project, a groundbreaking Horizon Europe Innovation Action program, has officially launched to address one of today's most pressing challenges: sustainable and energy-efficient digital networks. The rapid growth of data-driven infrastructures has increased energy consumption, costs, and carbon emissions. This challenge is further amplified by the fragmented nature of cloud ecosystems, which struggle to efficiently manage resources across diverse edge devices such as e-vehicles, IoT-enabled sensors, and smart devices. O-CEI tackles this fragmentation head-on by fostering seamless collaboration between independent entities and enabling real-time data sharing to optimize energy usage and improve operational efficiency. An Open Platform for a Greener Tomorrow, O-CEI O-CEI aims to create an open CEI platform that emphasizes interoperability, security, and reliability. The platform seeks to build an ecosystem to accelerate innovation and adoption of CEI solutions, enable energy flexibility, establish CEI standards, and create viable and scalable business models. The platform will be developed based on information collected across six strategic verticals, addressing critical sectors such as electricity grids, electromobility, software-defined vehicles, agriculture, logistics, and urban environments. To this end, O-CEI will conduct eight large-scale pilots to showcase innovative applications, including optimizing renewable energy grids, promoting sustainable dairy production, enabling smart electric vehicle charging, and managing energy in maritime ports. Through 28 real-world scenarios, the project looks to demonstrate its flexibility and scalability, emphasizing its potential to transform diverse sectors and drive sustainable innovation. By advancing open standards and virtualization technologies, the project will enable collaboration and innovation across the six verticals. This cross-domain integration will empower industries to make faster, more precise energy predictions and implement adaptable solutions, significantly reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. The project allocated up to 4 million euros for two Open Calls which will start as of January 2026. A Vision for Strategic Autonomy and Sustainability O-CEI unites 58 partners from 20 countries, including leading industrial players, research organizations, academic institutions, SMEs, and non-profits. Together, these stakeholders will shape a resilient ecosystem and a competitive market for European businesses and key innovation stakeholders. The project coordinator, Prof. Carlos Enrique Palau Salvador, from The Polytechnic University of Valencia, underlined O-CEI's transformative potential: "O-CEI represents a bold step toward reimagining Europe's Cloud-Edge-IoT ecosystems. The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) is returning to Maker Faire Rome with an impressive array of cutting-edge technologies, developed through research at their 16 centres across Italy. These innovations are designed to improve everyday life and ensure personal and infrastructural safety, offering an exciting glimpse of what visitors can experience from October 25th to 27th at the Gazometro Ostiense. Maker Faire Rome returns Rehabilitation Exoskeletons Making its debut at Maker Faire Rome, FloatEVO will be unveiled at the INAIL Central Research Directorate booth the 25 th of October. Developed by Rehab Technologies IIT-INAIL, a joint lab between IIT and INAIL, FloatEVO is the next generation of the previous FLOAT model, co-created with the INAIL Motor Rehabilitation Centre in Volterra. This wearable robotic medical device for upper limbs features an innovative flipping mechanism that allows it to be used for the rehabilitation of both the left and right arms. Designed to accelerate recovery for shoulder and elbow injuries, FloatEVO is aimed at patients recovering from trauma-induced orthopedic or neurological injuries. TWIN At the same booth, you can also explore Twin, a lower-limb robotic exoskeleton designed for medical applications and rehabilitation therapies. Twin is a game-changer for individuals with limited or no mobility in their lower limbs, helping them to stand, walk with crutches or walkers, and even sit and stand up again. This exoskeleton was co-developed with the INAIL Prosthetic Centre in Budrio by the Rehab Technologies team at IIT-INAIL. IIT Softbots On display at another stand will be the latest robotic and prosthetic innovations developed by the IIT Soft Robotics for Human Cooperation and Rehabilitation unit, in collaboration with the E. Piaggio Centre at the University of Pisa. Among the standout projects is AlterEgo, a humanoid robot designed for remote assistance in hazardous environments. Equipped with robotic hands, AlterEgo can interact with its surroundings and is controlled through wearable sensors and VR headsets. Also featured is SoftHand Pro, a flexible prosthetic hand with 19 joints, offering intuitive grip and control, along with SoftFoot Pro, an advanced prosthetic foot inspired by human anatomy. SoftFoot Pro is engineered to adapt to uneven surfaces, providing stability and comfort for everyday use. 3D Bioprinting of Human Tissues 3D bioprinting is one of the most exciting technologies in regenerative medicine and pathology research. IIT's Nanotechnologies for Neurosciences unit, part of the Center for Life Nano- and Neuroscience in Rome, will demonstrate 3D bioprinting techniques capable of replicating specific human tissues. Visitors will have the chance to witness live 3D printing of cells and interact with the freshly printed objects. This hands-on experience is designed to engage younger visitors, allowing them to explore the world of biomaterials in a fun and educational way. In episode 23 of Recsperts, we welcome Yashar Deldjoo, Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy. Yashar's research on recommender systems includes multimodal approaches, multimedia recommender systems as well as trustworthiness and adversarial robustness, where he has published a lot of work. We discuss the evolution of generative models for recommender systems, modeling paradigms, scenarios as well as their evaluation, risks and harms.We begin our interview with a reflection of Yashar's areas of recommender systems research so far. Starting with multimedia recsys, particularly video recommendations, Yashar covers his work around adversarial robustness and trustworthiness leading to the main topic for this episode: generative models for recommender systems. We learn about their aspects for improving beyond the (partially saturated) state of traditional recommender systems: improve effectiveness and efficiency for top-n recommendations, introduce interactivity beyond classical conversational recsys, provide personalized zero- or few-shot recommendations.We learn about the modeling paradigms and as well about the scenarios for generative models which mainly differ by input and modelling approach: ID-based, text-based, and multimodal generative models. And they seem to have many of the same challenges as in the rest of North America - problems with Chinese products and standards and certifications, for example. They are making headway on light pollution however, starting with some dark sky compliant areas in the Baja Peninsula and working its way through Mexico. Alex is an Architect and Lighting Designer from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. With extensive experience in lighting design, mainly in the industrial and commercial sectors. He has collaborated on multiple projects to achieve green certifications, such as LEED. He is a university lecturer, teaching Lighting courses in the Architecture program. Passionate about sharing knowledge, he has conducted various workshops where light is the medium for expressing ideas. Co-founder with his wife Paulina of Wawa Lighting. Paulina is an architect from the National Technological Institute of Mexico and holds a master's degree in Lighting Design from Aalborg University in Denmark. Gerald T. Bodner received a B.S.E.E. (Electrical Engineering) from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now Polytechnic University) in January, 1973, and has taken graduate courses in radar and switching systems. He previously worked as an electrical engineer at AIL Systems in Deer Park – now part of EDO Corporation – where he designed analog and digital circuits and software for various radar and radar-jamming systems, including the countermeasures equipment for the B-1 bomber. Mr. Bodner received a Juris Doctorate from St. John's University School of Law in 1981. Mr. Bodner worked as a patent attorney since 1981 at two major New York City law firms, and was an equity partner at a Syosset patent firm from 1990 until 2002, when he founded Bodner & O'Rourke, LLP in Melville with his partner, Thomas O'Rourke. Mr. Bodner is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court, and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the IEEE and the New York State Bar Association. Mr. Bodner has conducted numerous lectures before academic and business organizations regarding intellectual property law, software protection, licenses, and related matters. He is also co-author of Patent Arbitration Guide published by the Bureau of National Affairs. His experience includes all phases of electrical and mechanical patent prosecution, computer software, licensing, patent and product liability litigation, and trademark and copyright prosecution and litigation. Mr. Bodner litigated the Festo v. SMC patent dispute, since its inception in 1988 until after the favorable U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2002, and assisted former Solicitor General Robert Bork in his preparation for the Supreme Court oral argument. We're asking, can fluid systems make computations? In this episode, we chat with Professor Eva Miranda, head of the Laboratory of Geometry and Dynamical Systems at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain. She's on a mission exploring one of math's most famous open problems – the existence of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation, which governs the flow of fluids such as water and air. Since the 1800's, researchers interested in how fluids flow have turned to Navier-Stokes. To investigate Navier-Stokes, Eva and her colleagues have constructed an abstract mathematical machine, a theoretical fluid computer, if you will. In this podcast, Professor Miranda tells us how a post from Australian Mathematician Terrence Tao inspired her, how she used geometry to construct her fluid computer, and why she believes that Navier-Stokes might not always be physically valid. Aside: Our conversation took a personal side trip to a time when Sama Bilbao y Leon, then a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, was intrigued by a "crazy" talk describing the benefits of nuclear systems small enough to be called atomic engines. End Aside. We talked about the process that countries undertake when they choose to develop the capability to own and operate nuclear power plants. We speculated on nuclear energy's potential to provide the kind of "leapfrog" advance demonstrated by mobile phone technology. We also talked about ways to respond to inaccurate arguments claiming that there are no small modular reactors operating or that they are untested and unproven technologies. Dr. Sama Bilbao y Leon brings a diverse resume to her job. She started her professional career as a nuclear safety engineer with Dominion, a major utility with a large nuclear plant operating arm, became an associate professor of nuclear engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University – where she played a leading role in establishing a new nuclear engineering degree program – and served in a variety of leadership positions at international organizations like the IAEA and the NEA. She holds a PhD and master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison,, a master's (Energy Technologies) and bachelor's (Mechanical Engineering) degrees from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Coming from a family of vine growers for four generations, from an early age Attilio experienced firsthand the hard work of the grape harvest and the constant dedication to the vineyard, but also the satisfaction of drinking a wine produced in the vineyard on which he worked for years. He studied viticulture and oenology at the Polytechnic University of Marche and during his studies he dedicated himself to the grape harvest every year and then, once he graduated, he began traveling to gain experience around the world: from 2010 to 2012 he was in Australia, where he worked as a "flying winemaker" first on Syrah for Mclaren Vale, and then fell in love with Pinot Noir, on which he would work in several wineries in Western Australia, Burgundy and New Zealand. Meanwhile, he also began working with Masciarelli Tenute Agricole since 2011. Today Attilio is Masciarelli's oenological manager, where he is personally responsible for the vinification and aging of Masciarelli wines, coordinating the work of the technical team in collaboration with the consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini. MASCIARELLI Tenute Agricole was founded in 1981 by the entrepreneurial intuition of Gianni Masciarelli, a symbolic figure on the Italian wine scene and a leading figure in the affirmation of modern Abruzzo winemaking. The first inspiration was a complex data capture session at a gait lab using optical and EMG sensors, which recorded precise information about her walk.Electromyography sensors, also known as EMG sensors, measure small electromyographic signals generated by your muscles as you move them. The second inspiration was functional electrical stimulation as part of her physical therapy.Electrode pads were placed on individual muscle groups, which a therapist stimulated during walking sessions to stimulate and strengthen the muscles. The device & company that was created is called CIONICThe device is a wearable for people with mobility issues that doesn't just monitor leg movements but actually helps activate the person's muscles. CIONIC partnered with the Laboratory for Engineering of the Neuromuscular System (LISiN) at The Polytechnic University of Turin. Robison talked on the device:“We set out to create a product that combined the diagnostic power of a multi-million dollar gait lab with the therapeutic power of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) … We were confident we could leverage the recent technological advances enabling innovative products like self-driving cars and apply it to the human body to solve an enormous problem: 14% of adults in the US experience mobility impairment, a number expected to balloon to 20% by 2050." The resulting sensor array successfully combines electromyography (EMG) and functional electrical stimulation (FES).LISiN Lab helped develop a comprehensive risk assessment strategy to ensure that the product was effective and safe Meta open sources early-stage AI translation tool that works across 200 languages | The Verge (08:37) Social media conglomerate Meta has created a single AI model capable of translating across 200 different languagesThe company is open-sourcing the project in the hopes that others will build on its work. The AI model is part of an ambitious R&D project by Meta to create a so-called “universal speech translator,” which the company sees as important for growth across its many platforms Machine translation allows Meta to better understand its users (and so improve the advertising systems that generate 97 percent of its revenue)Could also be the foundation of a killer app for future projects like its augmented reality glasses. While most machine translation models handle only a handful of languages, Meta's model is all-encapsulating: it's a single system able to translate in more than 40,000 different directions between 200 different languages. Meta AI research scientist Angela Fan, who worked on the project, says the model, described in a research paper here, is already being tested to support a project that helps Wikipedia editors translate articles into other languages. Additionally, Fan stated that an important decision was to open-source as many elements of the project as possible — from the model to the evaluation dataset and training code. Meta also offers grants to researchers who want to contribute to such translation projects but are unable to finance their own projects We are going to end off with a quote from Fan:“I think that's really, really important, because it's not like one company will be able to holistically solve the problem of machine translation … It's everyone — globally — and so we're really interested in supporting these types of community efforts.” Tiny shapeshifting robots brush and floss your teeth, kill bacteria | New Atlas (14:53) Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a system of microrobots that can change shape to form bristles or floss. They don't just brush plaque away, but release antimicrobials to kill bad bacteria. If you want to outsource brushing your teeth to robots. Part of the problem with teeth brushing is that toothbrushes don't account for differences in the shape or spacing of different people's teeth.The new system solves that issue by effectively shapeshifting. It's made up of iron oxide nanoparticles, which can be assembled into different formations and controlled using magnetic fields. The particles can be arranged into the shape of bristles to brush plaque from tooth surfaces, or thinner floss-like strands to scrub between teeth. Iron oxide is known to activate hydrogen peroxide, triggering a reaction that produces free radicals that kill bacteria and the sticky biofilms they form on teeth. The system was tested on a flat slab of artificial tooth-like material, then a 3D-printed tooth model, and finally on real human teeth. The tests showed that these microrobots could efficiently remove plaque and biofilms, reducing pathogenic bacteria below detectable levels. Also showed they could precisely control the bristle stiffness and length by adjusting the magnetic field.This allowed the tips to be made firm enough to clean the teeth but still soft enough to be gentle on gums. The researchers say that the customizability of this microrobot system could clean people's teeth better, while its hands-free potential could allow people with reduced fine motor skills to still take care of their oral health. New drug increases human life span by 30%, according to Mayo Clinic | Brighter Side News (19:47) Scientists may never find the elixir of life, but they are finding new ways to extend our life spans. Mayo Clinic researchers say senolytic drugs can boost a key protein in the body that may protect older people against aspects of aging and a range of diseases. Senolytics developed at Mayo Clinic and given once clear the bloodstream of senescent or "zombie" cells.These cells contribute to multiple diseases and negative aspects of aging. Diseases including atherosclerosis (a form of heart disease), diabetes, and lung disease. As you age, these zombies build up in the body. They can make it difficult for your body to repair tissue, and they can release chemicals that harm normal cells nearby. This study shows that the removal of senescent cells significantly boosts the production of a protective protein called a-klotho.The protein a-klotho is important to maintaining good health, as it tends to decrease with age, and especially decreases in multiple diseases, including Alzheimer's, diabetes and kidney disease. James Kirkland, M.D., Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic internist and senior author of the study., talked on these Senolytics drugs:“We show that there is an avenue for an orally active, small-molecule approach to increase this beneficial protein and also to amplify the action of senolytic drugs." Animal studies have shown that decreasing a-klotho in mice shortens life span and increasing a-klotho in mice by inserting a gene that causes its production increases life span by 30%. This study shows that senolytics increased a-klotho in humans with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a senescence-associated disease that leads to frailty, serious breathing difficulties and death. Tesla will open up Superchargers to non-Tesla electric vehicles in the US later this year - The Verge (24:23) Tesla plans to open up its Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles in the US in late 2022, according to a White House memo. The company has been allowing non-Tesla EVs to use its Supercharger plugs in several cities in Europe as part of a limited pilot program but has been quiet about when US charging stations would be available to non-Tesla EV owners. The memo stated: “Later this year, Tesla will begin production of new Supercharger equipment that will enable non-Tesla EV drivers in North America to use Tesla Superchargers.” Tesla did not respond to an email seeking confirmation of these plans (Elon Musk disbanded the company's PR office in 2019). It's not clear whether the White House purposefully scooped Tesla's own announcement on this project. Tesla's Supercharger network is often held up as the best possible example of an EV charging network: fast, reliable, and plentiful. This news is in line with what Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has, for years, about opening up his Superchargers to other companies' electric vehicles. If the US version of the pilot program works the same as it does in Europe, non-Tesla EV owners will need to download the most recent version of Tesla's smartphone app in order to access the stations. They will be prompted to select “Charge Your Non-Tesla” in order to find the closest participating Supercharger site. Tesla owners can still use the stations just as normal.

Marco received his training in product design, material engineering, and nanotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Milan. Since then, he has gained years of experience in various 3D platforms and has honed skills in designing immersive experiences both digitally and physically. In 2019, Genefer and Marco were selected as artists-in-residence at the Science Center in Philadelphia. Today they get to share about the creative explosion waiting to happen at the intersection of art, tech, science, and education. We also have a good laugh about stick bugs and the crazy things skydiving instructors say as you jump out of planes. Their advice for our listeners? Alexey Knyazev - Doctor of Chemistry, Director of Engineering Chemical Technology Center, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, National Research Tomsk State University. Laureate of the Russian Presidential Prize in the field of science and innovation for young scientists in 2009. Was born on July 28, 1978 in Tomsk. Aleksey (and his brother Andrey Knyazev, director of the NOVOKHIM company) are the fourth generation of a family of chemical scientists who worked in Tomsk universities. Great-grandmother and great-grandfather graduated from Mendeleyevka (Russian Chemical Technical University named after D.I. Mendeleev) and in the five-year period of chemicalization of the whole country, which began in 1938, they came to develop chemistry in Tomsk. Great-grandfather, Nikolai Pavlovich Kurin, was already with a degree and headed one department at TPI, great-grandmother (Geniya Abramovna) - another, portraits of both hang now in the 2nd building of the Polytechnic University. My great-grandfather also has an obelisk in the 10th building - because after some time he began to study nuclear physics and headed the 43rd department, which trained personnel for the construction of the SCC. The grandfather of Alexei Knyazev, Mikhail Nikolaevich Kurin, also studied in Moscow at the Russian Chemical Technical University, returned to Tomsk and headed the 13th department - the one that deals with research at an experimental nuclear reactor. His wife, Larisa Nikolaevna, came from Novosibirsk and entered the Tomsk State University at the Faculty of Chemistry, where she then worked all her life. She headed the Department of Physical and Colloidal Chemistry, created a laboratory for catalytic research. Alexey Knyazev's mother - Elena Mikhailovna Knyazeva is also catalytic, now she is a teacher at the Department of General and Organic Chemistry at TPU. Alexander Hramov is the head of Neuroscience and Cognitive Technology Lab of Innopolis University (Kazan) and the scientific supervisor of the Baltic Center for Neurotechnology and Artificial intelligence of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (Kaliningrad). Alexander spent more than 25 years in the theory of complex systems, biophysics, brain science, neurotechnologу, and machine learning applications in life science. He published 5 monographs, about 200 scientific papers and got 30 patents in these fields. Under his leadership, 15 Ph.D. and 3 Full Doctor Thesis were defended. Ms. Mitchko-Beale joined Charter from Cadent, a provider of data-driven solutions for buying and selling TV advertising. She served as joint Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer and oversaw all technical aspects of the company's strategy, operations and development. Earlier in her career, Ms. Mitchko-Beale was Senior Vice President of Video Infrastructure Software at Cablevision Systems Corporation (currently part of Altice USA) where she was responsible for the software development of new consumer-facing technologies. As a key member of Cablevision's technology senior leadership team, she broke new ground in bringing interactive and web technologies to traditional media models. With more than 20 years of experience, Ms. Mitchko-Beale is a technology, television, and advanced-advertising veteran with a strong record of first-to-market products. She earned an Emmy award from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for Best Interactive Television Platform for Cablevision's iO Interactive Television and two Technical Emmys for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for the Creation of Non-Traditional Programs or Platforms for Cablevision's iO Interactive Optimum Digital Cable and the second for Pioneering Work in Implementation and Deployment of Network DVR.Ms. Mitchko-Beale received a B.S. in electrical engineering from Polytechnic University in New York.
