In today's episode I share some current wonders and ponders regarding what it really means to be unconventional. The opposite is conventional, which means based on, or in accordance with, what is generally done or believed. Normal. Regular. Ordinary. What if that's not what we really desire? Or what we really are, deep down? What if we're more wired to be deviants? That means departing from an established course or accepted standard. The book I mention in this episode is "The Economics of Higher Purpose" by Robert E. Quinn and Anjan V. Thakor. I also mention the Enlightened Leadership Lab (www.enlightenedleadershiplab.com) and Purple Dialogue (www.purpledialogue.com).

Armstrong, who wrote the book entitled 'Your Story is not Your story' From the Author: One key to successful leadership is continuous personal change. Personal change is a reflection of our inner growth and empowerment.—Robert E. QuinnThrough my story I want people to understand that in order to have success you must grow personally in all areas of your life. It does not matter what you have gone through but that you grow through it. I want you to know that your story is all you have, and nobody can take that away from you. If you have a dream, don't give up on it; and if God has put it in your heart and your dreams, then it's already done. Life will happen to you but through your own personal growth, you will succeed and impact the world. My mission is to let you know that I believe in your dreams, but you have to understand that you have it in you already to have the life you want. Remember, it's not over until you win. I believe in you, so go live your dreams. Take care and God bless.YOUR STORY IS NOT YOUR STORY Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/folkesunfettered. Deep change is needed. Otherwise it is a slow death. “Knowledge is the ungrateful child of learning.” We go to great lengths to deny the need for change. Positive organization scholarship. The problem with thinking “I am powerless to try to change our system“ We have evidence all around us that what we are thinking is wrong. If one teacher is doing it, that means it's possible. The question is “What's real?” The principal's reference point is the middle of the curve. The way you change things is you begin to learn from excellence. We are looking for meaningful life, but something blocks us, that's fear. Principals believe that their most valued contribution is to prevent conflict. Leadership is about creating conflict. Turn it into transformative cooperation. Realization of potential. Great teachers vs. good teachers. 4 variables: idealized influence, individualized concern, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation (using inquiry to stimulate change)! Love of learning transcends other challenges. People not marching to the drum of convention. We are all subject to the slow death. What result do I want to create? You've linked your identity Create the future that doesn't yet exist. Each failure is a step to find out your potential. Purpose driven Life. The moment you commit to a purpose, you moralized your life. When you find out who you are, you find your true character. Your best self begins to emerge. Fail, fail, fail, then succeed. You develop transformative power. If you want to be a really good teacher… No matter what they say or do, every student wants to learn, every students wants to succeed. When you break that code, everything changes. Animate a community - put together things they want, nurture them, and then you can take it to the next level. Henry Gradillas How to be a transformative principal? Sit down, and ask, what result do I want to create? Why am I on the earth? What's my purpose in life? When I die how will the planet be different because I'm here. Am I internally connected? Am I other focused? Am I externally open? When Dr. Quinn was in the 6th grade, there was a popular boy in school who was good at basketball and almost every cute cheerleader loved him. Due to certain circumstances, he had to leave the school, and Dr. Quinn, wanting to be loved by the cheerleaders as well, saw it as an opportunity to replace him and become the best basketball player he could be. After working really hard, Dr. Quinn didn’t see any results, as even though he became the best basketball player, the cheerleaders still didn’t love him or notice him. But something else happened for the first time in his life. He realized he could set a goal and pursue it and turn into somebody new. And from his role as a point guard, he learned that it’s about making everyone else better. Although he never achieved his goal of becoming loved by the cheerleaders, Dr. Quinn learned something even more profound in his life.

Cameron, Kim S., Jane E. Dutton, and Robert E. Quinn. Positive Organizational Scholarship: Foundations of a New Discipline. San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc., 2003. For the sake of contrast, now imagine another world in which almost all organizations are typified by appreciation, collaboration, virtuousness, vitality, and meaningfulness. Creating abundance and human well-being are key indicators of success. Imagine that members of such organizations are characterized by trustworthiness, resilience, wisdom, humility, and high levels of positive energy. Social relationships and interactions are characterized by compassion, loyalty, honesty, respect, and forgiveness. Significant attention is given to what makes life worth living. Imagine that scholarly researchers emphasize theories of excellence, transcendence, positive deviance, extraordinary performance, and positive spirals of flourishing. Specifically, we define authentic leadership in organizations as a process that draws from both positive psychological capacities and a highly developed organizational context, which results in both greater self-awareness and self-regulated positive behaviors on the part of leaders and associates, fostering positive self-development. The authentic leader is confident, hopeful, optimistic, resilient, transparent, moral/ethical, future-oriented, and gives priority to developing associates to be leaders. … The authentic leader does not try to coerce or even rationally persuade associates, but rather the leader's authentic values, beliefs, and behaviors serve to model the development of associates.
