In this episode, we are joined by Michael Wejchert, author of "Hidden Mountains: Survival and Reckoning After a Climb Gone Wrong." Michael's writing about adventure has been featured in various publications, including the New York Times, Adventure Journal, Climbing, Ascent, Alpinist, and more. He shares the fascinating story behind "Hidden Mountains," which recounts a harrowing climbing expedition in a remote Alaskan mountain range that took a dangerous turn, leading to a difficult rescue attempt and the high cost of survival. Our conversation includes a deep dive into several topics, including the impact of high-risk adventure on mental health, the challenges of writing about traumatic experiences, and the writing mentorship Michael received from the late Dave Roberts, a famous author and climber. We also explore the early days of Outward Bound in the United States and Michael's time with New Hampshire's Mountain Rescue Service. Don't miss this gripping and enlightening discussion with Michael Wejchert. Season 16 is focused on how high-risk adventure impacts mental health and is underwritten by wmai.org Michael's bio from his website:  Michael Wejchert has lived in New Hampshire for ten years. He will never leave. He's guided off and on since 2012, in between trips to Newfoundland, Alaska, Patagonia, Peru, and the Canadian Rockies, often with fellow CMG guides, including his fiancée Alexa Siegel. He loves all forms of climbing, from sport clipping to multi-day suffer fests in the mountains. His favorite guiding days usually involve goggles, whiteouts, and cursing over a whisperlite stove. (It's all about that bivouac). He has guided 5.10, WI5, and many successful Presidential Traverses. Michael is a certified SPI, an AMGA Apprentice Rock Guide, a Wilderness First Responder, has his AIARE Level II Avalanche certification, and is a board member of New Hampshire's Mountain Rescue Service. He is an award-winning essayist who wrote for Alpinist, Appalachia, Ascent, Rock & Ice, Gripped, and The New York Times. He and Alexa live in a small off-the-grid cabin surrounded by piles of climbing gear and Alexa's filthy, mismatched socks.

About Lor Sabourin In the episode, I talk with Lor Sabourin, who is a successful climber and a mental training coach for The Warrior's Way, where they travel to teach clinics and work one-to-one with climbers of all levels. Lor is also a graduate student on their way to becoming a counselor. I met Lor a long time ago at the base of Dinosaur Rock in the Flatirons, where I was struck by their calm demeanor and friendly smile. I've followed Lor on Instagram since then and have been continually impressed by their ability to talk about difficult subjects with eloquence and humility. Lor recently became the first non-binary climber to climb a 5.14 route on traditional gear when they clipped the chains of Sedona's East Coast Fist Bump (5.14a). I wanted to talk to them about what that projecting process was like, how they improved their climbing so quickly, and what kind of response they've gotten from the climbing community about it. We also talked about some mental aspects of climbing, which is what they work on with people every day, and Lor's insights did not disappoint. They also shared about their experience of coming out as non-binary, and how that affected their relationships with friends and how it affected their climbing. For some reason I feel a kinship with Lor, and I always like talking to them. In this interview we navigated difficult topics, sometimes with less panache than I would've liked (on my part), but these are the conversations that need to happen at the moment, even if they're not easy. I VERY much appreciated Lor's willingness to be open and vulnerable in talking about personal things.   Lor Sabourin Episode Details What they did to improve climbing in such a short amount of time Eating disorder from the age of 7 How their eating disorder was connected to their gender identity How they felt about being the “first non-binary person to send 5.14 on gear” How we can deal with feeling entitled in climbing and “wanting something for nothing” Dealing with “bad mental days” Building self compassion in climbing and in life Hot they navigate school, work, and climbing in terms of time management How they like van life long term How climbing is a mindfulness exercise   Show Links Article on Rock & Ice about Lor Lor's Coaching Page on Warrior's Way Lor's Instagram Take Alex's class on Running for Climbers Join Alex's next Team Program       Photo Credit Photo of Lor by Blake McCord @blakemccordphoto

About Neil Gresham   Neil Gresham is a British climber and trainer who's been training people for about 20 years now. He's the training columnist at both Climbing and Rock & Ice magazines, and has written extensively on the topic. At 44, he's still pushing his limits on sport climbs (14b last year), ice climbs, and deep water solos, among other types of climbing. Although he has no formal background in training (I'm finding that to be irrelevant in these interviews), he's studied the literature on climbing training and other related sports. But most of all, he's debatably one of the most experienced climbing trainers out there, having been doing this pretty full time since the 1990's.  He also wrote an interesting article recently about his ketogenic diet that's made a huge difference in his climbing and body composition, which I responded to with my own podcast episode about the diet. We talk about his experience with keto and exactly what he eats on it.  What We Talked About Case study of 5.10/11 climber trying to break into the next level How he helped fix a client's elbows in a matter of weeks How to break into 5.11 or 5.12 What the ketogenic diet is and how he's improved on it The most important overall exercise for a climber Neil Gresham Links Neil Gresham's website Awesome video of Neil training and redpointing

Alex Johnson is an athlete on The North Face team, and she travels the world as a professional climber. She has some V12 ascents under her belt, she's a 2-time world cup winner and 5-time national champ. She's currently living in Las Vegas, but before that she was living out of her RV, following the good weather to her favorite bouldering areas. She spent a lot of time this winter in Bishop trying The Swarm, a V13/V14, which we talk about in the interview. I've always been a fan of Alex Johnson, and I remember watching her at The Spot competing when she was just a kid really. Her confidence and poise, as well as her incredible strength, have always impressed me. What We Talked About Her biggest accomplishments and biggest failures as a climber Which training styles have worked for her and which have not What it was like for her to train with the Euros How she's training for Vail this year (it's a secret so don't tell anyone) How her diet affects her climbing (if at all) Whether or not her hard ascents have been downgraded because she's a female How she balances being friends and fierce competitors with Angie, Puccio and the other girls Related Links Alex's website is www.aj-ontherocks.blogspot.com Alex on Facebook: www.facebook.com/alexjohnsonclimber An article in Rock & Ice about Alex's negative experience training in Europe: "Unbroken: The Alex Johnson Profile" Support The Podcast This podcast is made possible by the training programs on TrainingBeta here.
