In this Bible study, we unpack Leviticus chapter three and the Fellowship Offering (also known as the peace offering). The Fellowship Offering was designed to be a thanksgiving offering made in friendship and peace with the Lord. The offering was a cow, goat or sheep (male or female) shared between; God, the priests, and the offerer. While we no longer need to sacrifice animals to say thanks to God there is a lesson to be learned here.Outline: 01:24 - “Fellowship Offering” word study - šelem, שֶׁלֶם - “Peace offering, requital, sacrifice for alliance or friendship. voluntary sacrifice of thanks.” “Shalom” - The root of this word is the same that is used for Shalom. “This is how we know we have come to know Him – IF we obey His Commands!” This is so important: if we know Jesus and the reality of being forgiven, then we need to demonstrate that by obedience to His Commands. Because John says in v4ff, “The man who says, ‘I know Jesus', but doesn't keep His Commandments, is a liar – this is a very strong statement – and the Truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys His Word, in him the LOVE of God is perfected. This is how we know we are in Him. Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.” It's not just the talk, you must walk the walk. V9ff, “He that says he is in the Light and hates his brother, is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother is in the Light and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. Whoever hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and doesn't know where he is going because the darkness has blinded him”… V12, John says, “I'm writing to you little children because your sins have been forgiven in Jesus' Name.” Walk as He walked. Amen.

Matra fue una empresa dedicada a los cohetes, los aviones y las armas… y un buen día decidieron hacer coches, deportivos y de competición, con gran éxito. Si conoces esta marca… no te puedes perder este video. Pero, si no la conoces… ¡no te puedes perder este vídeo! Hay marcas de coches de competición, quizás no tan populares, por las que tengo especial debilidad. Una de ellas es BRM o British Racing Motors, de la que en este mismo momento me comprometo a hacer un vídeo. La otra es Chaparral y de ésta ya tenemos vídeo titulado “Historia de Chaparral, desconocidos y revolucionarios”. Y la otra es Matra. Mécanique Aviation et Traction. A estas palabras corresponden las siglas de MATRA, una empresa fundada en 1941, en plena segunda guerra mundial por Marcel Chassagny, con la finalidad de proveer material y armamento aeronáutico para el gobierno Frances. No me voy a extender mucho en la parte militar de MATRA, pero los que comenzaron a hacer con éxito fue el combinar su experiencia en la aeronáutica con sus conocimientos en la fabricación de bombas, construyendo lo que podríamos calificar de primeros misiles. El más conocido puede que sea el MATRA BGL-1000, donde BGL es el acrónimo de “Bombe a Guidage Laser”, es decir, guiada por láser aparecida en 1978. Estas bombas se podían acoplar a los aviones de fabricación francés Mirage 2.000 y F1 e incluso en aviones norteamericanos… de hecho se usaron en la Guerra del Golfo. Pero fue en los primeros años 60 cuando la marca René Bonnet Automobiles sufre graves problemas financieros… y es adquirida por MATRA. El propietario y director de MATRA, Marcel Chassagny, ve una oportunidad de expandir sus negocios al sector de las 4 ruedas, que considera que puede ser muy rentable en tiempos de paz, y comienza la fabricación del primer MATRA, el Djet. Marcel era un enamorado de los coches y de la competición y ficha el ingeniero aeronáutico de gran prestigio, Jean-Lun Lagardère para dirigir la producción de coches y dos divisiones creadas por él, que darían mucho que hablar: MATRA Sport y Engines MATRA, dedicadas respectivamente a los coches de competición y a los motores. El Djet era un coupé con motor central, generalmente considerado como el primeo o al menos uno de los primeros coches con motor central comercializados en serie. Era un coche de 4,2 metros de largo, una gran distancia entre ejes y solo 660 kg de peso, movido por el motor del R-8 Major, para entendernos, en R-8 TS español de 1.108 cm subido de potencia hasta los 72 CV primero y los 80 después. En las versiones de competición se superaban los 100 CV. Al Djet le sustituye en 1967 el 530, nombre reutilizado de sus misiles, con el peculiar motor V4 de Ford que equiparon muchos de sus modelos e incluso el Saab 96. Un motor de potencia similar al de Renault, 70 CV, pero mucho más compacto. El objetivo era competir con el Lotus Elan, de gran prestigio en esos tiempos. Pero MATRA aspiraba a fabricar coches de mayor difusión y no solo deportivos, aunque siempre coches muy “especiales” en el mejor sentido de la palabra. En los años 70 llega a un fructífero acuerdo con Simca y fabrican un original coupé de tres plazas y bonito nombre, Bagheera. En los finales de los 70 y primeros 80 llegan coches muy interesantes. Por un lado, el Bagheera y sustituido por el Murena, más moderno, pero para mí no más bonito, pero con motores que alcanzan los 2.2 litros. Creo que estos dos coches se merecen un vídeo, decidme si os parece interesante. En 1977 se lanza el primer MATRA que no es un deportivo, casi os diría que podría considerarse un moderno SUV… pero con estilo: El MATRA Rancho o el MATRA-Simca Rancho. Como sabéis Simca fue absorbida por PSA, o sea, por Peugeot. Y en MATRA pensaron en un innovador coche familiar, pero muy práctico y con un encanto especial, el considerado el primero monovolumen europeo, el Espace. Y Peugeot lo rechazó… quizás demasiado innovador para esa marca. Y se lo presentaron a Renault, una marca más atrevida y que aceptó el reto… no hace falta que os diga que fue un éxito. Un éxito que no puede decir que haya llegado hasta nuestros días, pues la actual Espace es, desde 2023 otro SUV más. Pero la primera Espace, fabricada por la propia MATRA es para mí de lejos la más bonito, fue una auténtica revolución y un éxito, tal éxito que en 1991 Renault prescinde de MATRA para diseñar y fabricar su propia Espace. El fracaso del Avantime, también diseñado y fabricado por MATRA quizás tuvo algo que ver. Pero ahora, damos un paso atrás y nos vamos a 1965. ¡Llegamos a los coches de carreras! Y es que Chassagny pensó que el Motorsport era un medio de mejorar el prestigio de la empresa y por tanto las ventas. Y en 1965 funda Matra Sport, diseña su propio Fórmula 3, el MS5 con Ford Cosworth y participan en el prestigioso Campeonato Francés. El éxito fue inmediato, consiguieron nada menos que tres campeonatos consecutivos con tres verdaderos pilotazos, en 1965 Jean Pierre Beltoise, en 1966 Johnny Servoz-Gavin y en 1967 Henri Pescarolo. En 1966 “ascienden” a la Formula 2 utilizando motores BRM y a partir de 1967 con el MS7 de motor Cosworth obteniendo tres campeonatos europeos de F2, en 1967 Jacky Ickx del equipo Tyrrell Racing, en 1968 Beltoise de Matra Sport y en 1969 Servoz-Gavin del Matra International. MATRA donde iba, arrasaba. Y el gobierno francés, a través de la petrolera ELF, ayuda a financiar el diseño y fabricación de un motor de Fórmula Uno. Y comienzan en la temporada 1969, a través del equipo Matra Internacional con los pilotos Stewart y Beltoise y sobre los monoplazas MS10, MS84 y MS80. El binomio MATRA MS80 y Stewart se muestran intratables, ganando los GG.PP. de Sudáfrica, España, Países Bajos, Francia, Gran Bretaña e Italia, y consiguiendo el doblete, Stewart Campeón Mundial de Fórmula 1 y MATRA la Copa de Constructores. Un verdadero logro, ya que estos títulos se consiguieron apena cuatro años en el mundo de las carreras. En la F1 lo importante es ganar el Mundial y en la resistencia lo importante es ganar la 24 Horas de Le Mans. Consigue más impacto el equipo que gana Le Mans que el que gana el Campeonato y esto lo tenía claro MATRA que centra todos sus esfuerzos en la mítica prueba francesa. Fue una decisión muy acertada consiguiendo tres victorias consecutivas con dos denominadores comunes: El motor V12 y el entonces llamada “Monsieur Le Mans” el grandísimo Henri Pescarolo. Pescarolo venció en 4 ediciones de Le Mans y en 21 pruebas del Mundial de resistencia. Estos fueron los equipos victoriosos: 1972, Pescarolo-Hill con Matra MS670, 1973, Pescarolo-Larrousse con Matra MS670B y 1974 Pescarolo-Larrousse con Matra MS670C. Conclusión. MATRA fabricó coches deportivos muy interesante, imagino conches muy innovadores y ganó con autoridad campeonatos de Fórmula 3, Fórmula 2, llegó a la Fórmula 1, venció tres veces Le Mans y fue proveedor de motores para otros equipos… y su motor V12 es un referente entre los motores de competición. Quién iba a pensar que un fabricante de armamento y accesorios para el mundo aeroespacial llegase a tanto.

With the team at Mercedes-AMG putting the V12-powered S65 out to pasture a handful of years ago, the highest-performance S-Class has become the 4.0-liter-powered S63. This latest iteration in the long line of hopped-up S-Class machines blends the aforementioned 4.0-liter with an electric motor at the rear axle. Powering this 188 hp electric motor is a 13.1kWh battery pack that can be recharged. According to Mercedes-AMG, this plug-in hybrid system was derived from the hybrid system that powers the brand's Formula 1 machine. Of course, that electric motor at the rear works with the 604 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque from the internal combustion engine and gives the latest S63 a staggering 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft of torque – not bad for a luxury cruiser. According to Mercedes-AMG, this combination is good enough to rocket this 5,831-pound car to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. Uno de vosotros me propuso un reto: Hacer un listado con los 10 mejores deportivos de la historia… ¡menudo desafío! Pero en GH… ¡nos atrevemos con todo! Hay tantas listas de “Los 10 mejores deportivos de la historia” como aficionados, porque cada uno tiene sus preferencias… os traspaso un reto: ¿Y si hacemos una lista con vuestras preferencias? 1. BMW M3 (1986). El M3 marcó un antes y un después en el mundo de los deportivos y sobre todo en BMW, pues fue el pistoletazo de salida de la división M. 2. Ferrari F40 (1987). Tras el desgraciado fallecimiento del “Commendatore” el 14 de agosto de 1988, lo tuve claro: El F40 era el mejor deportivo del momento, sería uno de los mejores deportivos de la historia y se convertiría en un mito. 3. Honda NSX (1990). Como un Ferrari… pero mejor y utilizable para el día a día. Este coche lo he podido probar muchas veces, usarlo a diario y viajar con él. 4. Jaguar E (1961). Seamos sinceros: La mayor cualidad del Jaguar E es su estética, en especial en su versión descapotable, para mí el “verdadero” Jaguar E. Esa es la virtud que ha prevalecido con el paso del tiempo, en especial desde que Enzo Ferrari dijo aquello de que el Jaguar E era “el coche más hermoso jamás fabricado”. 5. Lamborghini Miura (1966). Yo no soy Enzo Ferrari, pero como sobre gustos no hay nada escrito, me atrevo a contradecirle: Para mí el deportivo más bonito de la historia es el Miura, considerado además como el primer superdeportivo de la historia… y el segundo modelo lanzado por la marca. 6. Lancia Stratos (1973). ¡Otro diseño del Gandini! ¡Qué grande! En Rallyes, su dominio fue aplastante y se fabricaron solo 492 unidades… muchas de ellas acabaron su vida destruida en algún rallye. 7. Lotus Super Seven (1957). El Seven y Super Seven los los Lotus que mejor se adecuan a la filosofía de su creador Colin Chapman cuando decía aquello de “prefiero que me quites un kilo a que me des un caballo”. 8. McLaren F1 (1992). Lo que hace que este coche esté en esta lista es de algún modo lo mismo que al F40: Era un coche de competición que se podía matricular y circular por la calle. Se dice que a Gordon Murray se le ocurrió la idea esperando en un avión y luego pensó… “¿por qué no?”. 9. Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (1954). ¡Solo por las puertas merece estar aquí! Y eso que estas puertas que le dieron el nombre de “Gullwing” o “Alas de gaviota” se hicieron así por pura serendipia… 10. Porsche 911 (1964). No soy especialmente fan del 911 pero… ¡cómo no iba a estar aquí el deportivo por excelencia! Lo tiene todo, una historia bonita, éxito en competición, versiones muy especiales como el primer turbo y, sobre todo, se sigue fabricando en la actualidad, muy evolucionado, pero conservando el rasgo del motor posterior. Conclusión. No están todos los que son, pero son todos los que están. Y hay otra conclusión: Realmente, este podcast necesita una segunda parte… ¿no os parece?
Ya sabes lo que nos gustan las rarezas en Garaje Hermético. Si eres como nosotros, este podcast lo vas a disfrutar porque buscando 10 coches con motor de 16 cilindros hemos acabado encontrando 16, más dos “bonus track” … para el final dejo los “reyes de las rarezas”. Encontrarás prototipos, coches de producción, de competición, con cilindros en línea, en V o en doble V y hasta con 5.000 CV… los hay de todo tipo y todos muy, muy raros. Confieso que para mí el motor ideal es un V12, bonito, equilibrado y de un sonido verdaderamente musical. Un motor que puedes llevar sin que sea extremadamente grande a 5 litros y a base de válvulas y turbo puedes conseguir fácilmente digamos que entre 600 y 900 CV. Podría decir que más de eso es vicio, pero sería falso… es “vicio” mucho antes. Entonces, ¿para que 16 cilindros? Básicamente hay tres motivos para llegar a eta cifra: Primero, porque hubo tiempos en que la mejor forma de aumentar la potencia era aumentar la cilindrada y la mejor forma de aumentar la cilindrada era aumentar el número de cilindros. Segundo, en ocasiones digamos que reaprovechas otros motores. Por ejemplo, si quieres 1000 CV y tienes un motor V8 y 500 CV en vez de diseñar un nuevo motor, haces uno que son dos V8 unidos… o, porque no, 4 motores de 4 cilindros… también se da el caso. Tercero, quieres hacer un coche excelso, lo más de lo más y piensas en como distinguirte… y en este caso, un motor de 16 cilindros desde luego que distingue. Los coches de esta selección han llegado a los 16 cilindros siguiendo uno o más de estos caminos. Mi idea era hacer una selección de 10 y quedarme solo con los de producción… pero me ha parecido una pena que os los perdáis, así que os traigo los 16 por orden cronológico. 1. Maserati V4 (1929). 2. Cadillac Series 452 V-16 (1930). 3. Marmon Sixt (1931). 4. Auto Union C-Type (1936). 5. Cadillac V16 Series 90 (1937). 6. Alfa Romeo Tipo 316 (1938). 7. BRM V16 (1947). 8. BRM H16 (1966). 9. Porsche 917 PA Spyder (1969). 10. Cizeta Moroder V16T (1988). 11. Jiménez Novia (1995). 12. Cadillac Sixteen (2003). 12+1. Bugatti Veyron (2005). 14. Rolls Royce 101EX (2012). 15. No hay película buena sin un buen malo. Te pongo el ejemplo de “La Guerra de las Galaxias”. ¿Quién se acuerda del “blandito” de Luke Skywalker? Nadie o casi nadie… porque ¡todos nos acordamos de Darth Vader y Han Solo! El malo y el “malote” respectivamente. No, no vamos a hablar de los coches de los “malos de las películas” sino de los coches favoritos por los malos, muy malos en general: Delincuentes, asesinos y dictadores. Pero os hablo de las películas como reflejo de la forma de pensar general: Los malos suelen tener coches negros o al menos oscuros, grandes o muy grandes y caros o muy caros… Desde los coches usados para la mafia rusa hasta los empleados por los gánster, desde los preferidos de los grandes dictadores a los elegidos por los “quinquis” españoles de los 70 o los traficantes sudamericanos, los coches favoritos de “los malos” deben cumplir estos requisitos: -Tamaño -Discreción -Potencia -Robustez 1. Cadillac Town Sedan (1928). Este era el coche, entre otros, de Al Capone el gánster más temido del Chicago de los años 20 y 30. De serie este modelo contaba con un poderoso V8 de 110 CV, pero los “capos” de la época, como el propio Al Capone, le instalaban “extras” como radio para escuchar a la policía, blindaje de acero o cristales a prueba de balas… pequeños “detallitos”. 2. Citroën Traction Avant (1934). La excelencia de este modelo le llevó a ser coche presidencial, a convertirse en todo un icono de la Resistencia francesa durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial para, finalmente, convertirse en el coche favorito de atracadores armados, como era el caso de “Pierrot el loco” y su banda, que la prensa llamaba "banda del Avant Traction". Y es que este coche por su rapidez y fiabilidad era ideal para cometer violentos atracos y luego salir por piernas… 3. Mercedes-Benz W31 G4 (1934). Para mi más malos que los delincuentes son los dictadores. Y que yo sepa solo hay un coche diseñado por y para dictadores. Porque hay modelos nuncios diseñados para el dictador de ese país, pero el Mercedes de la serie W31 más conocido por Mercedes G4 fue diseñado para el uso personal de Hitler, quien regaló estos modelos a otros dictadores, unos aliados como Mussolini y otros “amigos” creo que, con comillas, como Francisco Franco… 4. Rolls-Royce Phantom III (1936). He querido huir del cine, porque ya hicimos un video, pero no he resistido la tentación de incluir el coche de un “malo” auténticamente de película, el de “Goldfinger”. La verdad es que en la saga 007 hay malos de todos los colores, pero hay que reconocer el buen gusto de Auric Goldfinger que se movía a bordo de un precioso Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedan De Ville, con motor V12 de 7,3 litros. Puedes verlo en el museo del cine de Londres, dentro de la colección de coches Bond. 5. Mercury Eight (1946). Este coche era un auténtico “Best Seller” entre los gánster de los USA en los años 40 y sobre todo 50. El origen de este coche es interesante, porque a mediados de los 40, Lincoln-Mercury se convierte en una división separada de Ford y quiere hacer coches de mayor nivel que la marca matriz. 6. Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman (1963). Siento que haya tres Mercedes en esta lista… pero en este caso este modelo ha sido el favorito de muchos personajes que no eran malos para nada, desde el propio Papa Pablo VI hasta Elvis Presley. Pero era un coche que por su imagen de ser “Lo más de lo más”, capacidad de representación, confort y amplitud, sedujo a muchos malos… entre ellos a Nicolae Ceauçescu, Pablo Escobar, Sadam Husseim o Idi Amin… y también a Fidel Castro, por cierto. 7. BMW 528i (1972). Hablo concretamente del modelo E12, porque es el coche del “Enemigo público número 1”. Jacques Mesrine fue declarado por la policía francesa como el “Enemigo Público Número 1” por sus frecuentes y violentos atracos de los que huía en su BMW 528i que en 1972 era un cochazo, grande y rápido. Su motor era un 6 cilindros en línea de casi 3 litros y 177 CV. 8. Lexus GS (1991). SI te hablan de “Mafia” piensas en Italia o Rusia, pero la mafia japonesa, la llamada Yakuza, también tiene los suyo. Son malos, pero son muy patriotas, pues les gustan las grandes berlinas, como a todos los mafiosos, pero ellos prefieren modelos Made in Japan, como el Lexus GS. 9. Chevrolet Tahoe (1995). Este es un caso curioso. Ya lo sabéis, en Garaje Hermético… ¡nos gustan las rarezas! Sobre todo, cuando hablamos de técnica. Y Hemos seleccionado 10 coches raros que seguro os van a sorprender, si no todos, casi todos… Siempre alabo y admiro el ingenio de los ingenieros. Me gusta mucho el diseño, pero me atraen más las rarezas cuando son mecánicas que cuando son puros ejercicio de diseño… aunque ambas cosas son compatibles. He escogido 10 rarezas, aunque teníamos más. He tratado en centrarme en coches que se han vendido, poco o mucho, aunque hay excepciones, porque por algunos de los modelos que aparecen en este vídeo, siento verdadera debilidad... 1. Alfa Romeo P3 (1932). Doble eje de transmisión. Vittorio Jano, nacido en 1891 es, sencillamente, un mito. Lo original de este coche era su transmisión. Tras el motor iba el cambio con la palanca entre las piernas del piloto y tras el cambio estaba el diferencial y desde ahí partían dos árboles de transmisión a dos coronas, una en cada rueda… realmente original. 2. Monaco Trossi (1935). Motor en estrella y tracción delantera. Su inspiración aeronáutica es evidente, con un motor de avión, de dos tiempos, 16 cilindros en estrella y 250 CV en el morro del monoplaza. Y, para hacerlo todavía más raro, con tracción delantera. 3. Isetta (1953). Entrar por delante. Pocos modelos más originales que este. Ermenegildo Preti era profesor de la Universidad Politécnica de Milán y se le ocurrió esta idea: Hacer un coche muy cortito, tanto que no había sitio para poner puertas laterales… así que se entraba por delante, por una única puerta delantera, basculando el volante. 4. Mercedes 300 SL (1954). Inyección directa de gasolina. Alguno me reprocharéis: “¿Rara la inyección directa de gasolina?” Cierto, hoy día que es lo más habitual, no es muy rara, pero os aseguro que en 1954 sí que los era. 5. Citroën 2 CV Sahara (1960). ¡Con dos motores! El ejército francés, en sus colonias africanas, necesitaba un coche todo terreno de tracción total, simple y barato. Y en Citroën decidieron partir de su probado 2CV y poner un motor en el maletero. Así consiguieron un 4x4 sencillo, barato y más francés que el champan. 6. Chrysler Turbine (1964). ¡Se vendieron 55 unidades! Hubo un momento de furor con la carrera espacial y con la aviación que las marcas de coche pensaron que las turbinas de aviación eran el futuro… y se estrellaron… Confieso que este coche, diseñado por Ghia y con turbinas A831 me apasiona… tanto que a lo mejor hago un vídeo monográfico. Con solo 130 CV el coche no corría mucho, gastaba una barbaridad y su motor tenía una temperatura de trabajo cercana a los 1.000 grados… se vendieron 55 que la marca recuperó y destruyó dejando solo 9 para la historia. 7. Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado (1968). Motor V8 y tracción delantera. A mediados de los años 60 la tracción delantera era una rareza, más en coche “Made in USA”. Cadillac rediseñó desde cero su nuevo Eldorado y en las versiones topes de gama, como la Fleetwood, la tracción delanetera se compaginaba con los enormes V9 de más de 7 litros y más de 300 CV, una pasada. 8. Lamborghini Countach (1975). Eje de transmisión por mitad del cárter. Hasta ese momento, todos los coches con motor central longitudinal llevaban el motor con el embrague hacia atrás, con el conjunto cambio diferencial a continuación. Pero con una distancia entre ejes de solo 2,5 el excelente motor V12 que ya tenían, sencillamente, no cabía. ¿Qué hicieron? Dar la vuelta al motor con el embrague y el cambio hacia el centro del coche y con un árbol de transmisión que atravesaba el cárter para llevar el movimiento al diferencial y al eje trasero. 9. Toyota Previa (1990). Motor central tumbado y propulsión posterior. Toyota quería hacer un o una, como queráis, monovolumen casi Premium y le hizo el encargo a uno de sus mejores diseñadores, Tokuo Fukuichi. Para conseguir la máxima habitabilidad y el mejor comportamiento tuvo una idea: ¿Y si pongo el motor en el centro? 10. Nissan GTR (2007). Doble árbol de transmisión. A primeros de los años 2000, Nissan quería un coche con motor delantero, porque querían superar en habitabilidad al 911, pero a la vez querían un coche con un buen reparto de pesos, lo que equivalía a montar en cambio sobre el eje trasero y al mismo tiempo querían que fuese tracción total... y aquí llegaba el lío. Así que pusieron dos árboles de transmisión. Uno conectaba el motor delantero, a través del embrague, con el cambio situado atrás. Y otro iba desde al cambio al eje delantero… así consiguieron tracción total y buen reparto de pesos. Por cierto, una solución que ya había utilizado, en este caso con motor central, el Ford RS200 en 1984. Conclusión. Muy sencilla: Había más. Me he dejado fuera coches como el Peugeot Turbo 16, con el motor a un lado, el Mini 6R4 con el motor entre las ruedas, prototipos, como el Dymaxion único coche que conozco con motor posterior y tracción delantera o el VW EA266, un supuesto sustituto del Escarabajo, con motor central bajo los asientos traseros.

Derek is already on record praising the F50 — but neither had driven a Zonda. They drove the cars, but didn't talk about it with one another until now. So here's the unfiltered truth about these two cars. In reality, they couldn't be more different. Disappointing. Derek called the Pagani disappointing — the worst thing you could ever hear from your parents. Especially after Jason had just ridden in the Gordon Murray GMA T.50. Perhaps this Zonda, which had been federalized for U.S. emissions, was quieter than most, but it was an acoustic nonevent: it sounded like a Toyota Camry V6. Which isn't an insult (that's the best sounding V6 in production today) — but it was out of bounds with their expectations. Where the Zonda surprised, however, was that it's a nice GT. But one perhaps that's not what the boys expected. On the other hand, the Ferrari F50 was a complete experience. Its V12 sounds nothing like any of the other 3 Ferrari V12s (Colombo, Lampredi, or F116/F140.) It's not a particularly beautiful sound — more a yell than a scream — but it's fully enveloping and wonderful. The rest of the experience matches up, with linear controls, beautiful steering, and a chassis that feels natural and wonderful. With one of the best clutch/shifter/gas calibrations ever, despite the V12 having almost no flywheel weight. Also, we include a video of Jason shifting the F50 about 2.2 million times in a minute. So the first thing that is super interesting about the new ChatGPT model is that it scores much higher, in math science and really really advanced things like coding. And what it does which is interesting is that it spends more time *thinking*, before spitting out a response.  ## Applied to humans When I was going super super deep into philosophy, around 2017, 2018… I penned an essay titled “Why Think?”. Some people thought it was a ridiculous idea, but… It might be the most critical one in modern day times. First thought: one can only think while walking, in the outdoors, experiencing gravity, reality, friction, changes in temperature humidity etc. Also, **one cannot think while being sedentary on one's butt**. ## Butt thoughts Let us consider… No great thought has arisen from a butt. **Great thoughts can only arise from legs**.  The cult of sitting has been around since ancient Greek times, it was typically seen as an honor thing; you would sit, or others would sit around you, when it came to the king, the gods, processions etc. To sit was more of a social, sociological thing. But now… Things are really weird. It does seem that nowadays, there seems to be a stronger connection between making money, and sitting on your butt. Typically, the more and the longer you sit on your butt, is correlated with how much money you will earn.  For example, the modern day programmer, either sitting on their butt all day, or maybe standing all day, or a little bit less worse… Standing walking treadmill while programming. But I think a lot of people have a hard time walking and programming at the same time -- I think most people need to be sedentary, or at least not moving to be productive. Or let us consider… What is being sold to us? I figure it out… A Lamborghini Ferrari Porsche McLaren or whatever… are for weaklings, wimps,  and typically skinny fat or fat people, or Shorty guys.

Hay coches que han pasado a la historia por su belleza, sus prestaciones, sus aportaciones técnicas o sus logros deportivos. Y otros, sencillamente, por ser casi irrompibles. Como estos 10 que os traigo en este vídeo, coches verdaderamente eternos. No como los motores “Pure Tech” de los que hablamos al final. Estos 10 modelos no tienen mucho que ver los unos con los otros, pero sí tienen algo en común además de su robustez. Aún los podrás ver, sobre todo en zonas rurales, pero no como clásicos mimados y restaurados, sino como el coche “de cada día” del usuario de turno… coches que duran 20, 30 o 40 años… ¡y siguen funcionando! Cuando hablamos de coches robustos todos pensamos en coches que no se rompen. Un acierto. Pero el aventamiento de los coches se mide demás maneras. Por ejemplo, por el deterioro del aspecto tanto exterior como interior. 1. Citroën C15 (1984). La C15 no, era completamente diferente y no era más que un Citroën Visa furgoneta, pero muy bien hecha y con un slogan publicitario para mí de los más afortunados: “Se lo carga todo”. 2. Seat Panda-Marbella (1980 y 1986). Panda y Marbella son para mí, son el mismo coche, porque el Marbella es un Panda retocado para que se perciba como distinto fruto de las peleas entre Fiat y Seat… que ganó Seat. Y es que la simplicidad es una virtud, como demostró su diseñador, nada menos que Giorgetto Giugiaro, con una carrocería atractiva, práctica y bonita a pesar de ser muy simple, como demuestra el parabrisas plano. 3. Lada Niva (1976). Para la gran mayoría es el mejor vehículo producidos en la antigua Unión Soviética. Y como decía al comienzo es un coche que quizás envejezca rápido de aspecto, pero que es una roca. 4. Mercedes Clase S W140 (1991). Nissan Patrol (1982). El “Patrullero” apareció en 1951 pero he elegido la tercera generación, por dos motivos: Fue la primera que se exportó en cifras muy apreciables y la primera fabricada en Europa, concretamente en España. 6. Renault 4 (1961). Un coche de larga vida pues apareció en 1961 en Francia y se fabricó hasta 1992 en Eslovenia: Total 31 años. Hicimos un video sobre Suzuki y los coches “simpáticos” … este es uno de ellos. Te podrá gustar a no, pero “cae bien”. 7. Saab 900 (1978). Para muchos “saabistas” o “saaberos”, el mejor Saab de la historia. Y puede que tengan razón. Hablamos, por supuesto, del 900 de la primera generación, no el aparecido en 1994 cuando Saab era ya de GM. 8. Suzuki Santana (1985). De nuevo me he decantado por el fabricado en España, la segunda generación, aunque todo lo dicho vale para toda la saga de Suzuki Jimny nacida en 1970. ¡Qué bien diseñado y que bien hecho estaba este coche! No soy un fan absoluto de este coche, pero justo es reconocer su gran calidad que lo convierte en un ejemplo de fiabilidad y robustez. Su mayor enemigo eran los mecánicos torpes. En Sudamérica esto no sucedía, los entendían y entienden muy bien, mejor que en España. 10. Toyota Hilux (1968). Lo maravilloso de este modelo es que es que es conocido y tiene fama de robusto en todo el mundo, por supuesto en Japón, mucho en los USA, en toda América, en Asia, en Australia… uno de los coches más internacionales de la historia. Conclusión. Nos pongamos como nos pongamos, robustez y sencillez suelen ir de la mano. No es la receta única, porque en este top ten hay un par de coches de bastante nivel, como son el Mercedes y el Saab. Los coches de ahora son seguramente los mejores de la historia por eficiencia, confort y seguridad… pero como dice un amigo mío mecánico… “tienen tantas cosas y tan complicadas… que algo se rompe”. Y, en mi opinión, algo de razón tiene, ¿no os parece? Coche del día. He elegido el Hilux. La verdad es que cualquiera de esta lista merece estar en nuestro Garaje Hermético. De hecho, por una razón u otra algunos ya han sido “Coche del día” anteriormente. Pero es que cada vez que veo un “telediario” rara es la ocasión en que no aparece uno de estos coches ya sea en una guerra, una inundación, un incendio o cualquier otra desgracia. Y ahí está, dando el callo y, como decía una publicidad de unos grandes almacenes: “Dan mucho y piden poco”. Pues eso.

Ferrari's not-quite-a-crossover Purosangue enters a world where the crossover is king, which is pushing sports-car-focused automakers toward adding more high-riding commuters into their respective lineups. Like a spiritual successor to the GTC4Lusso, the Purosangue has as many doors as it does seats, and is pointing its nose more at the highway than the racetrack. Of course, under the hood is still 6.5 liters worth of V12 that sends 715 hp and 528 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. From there, power travels to all four wheels before hitting the pavement. Edwards Deming. Today, I'm continuing my discussion with Bill Bellows, who has spent 31 years helping people apply Dr. Deming's ideas to become aware of how their thinking is holding them back from their biggest opportunities. This is the Misunderstanding Quality series, episode two, The Eight Dimensions of Quality. Bill, take it away. 0:00:30.4 Bill Bellows: Welcome back, Andrew. Great to see you again. All right, episode two, we're moving right along. So in episode one, which the title I proposed, waiting to see what comes out, the title I proposed was, Quality, Back to the Start. And that was inspired by some lyrics from Coldplay. Anyway, but this is a, it's going back to my start in quality and last time I mentioned discovering Taguchi's work long before I discovered Dr. Deming. In fact, Gipsie Ranney, who is the first president of the Deming Institute, the nonprofit formed by Dr. Deming and his family just before he passed away, and Gipsie became the first president and was on the board when I was on the board for many years. And I spoke with her nearly every day, either driving to work or driving home. And once, she calls me up and she says, "Bill," that was her Tennessee accent, "Bill." 0:01:50.5 BB: She says, "It says on The Deming Institute webpage that you infused Dr. Taguchi's work into Dr. Deming's work," something like that, that I... Something like I infused or introduced or I brought Taguchi's work into Deming's work, and I said, "Yes." I said, "Yeah, that sounds familiar." She says, "Isn't it the other way around?" That I brought Deming's work into Taguchi's work. And I said, "No, Gipsie," I said, "It depends on your starting point. And my starting point was Dr. Taguchi." But I thought it was so cool. She says, "Bill don't you have it? Don't you... " She is like, "Isn't it the other way around?" I said, "No, to me, it was all things Taguchi, then I discovered Dr. Deming." But I was thinking earlier before the podcast, and I walked around putting together how, what I wanna talk about tonight. And I thought, when I discovered Taguchi's work, I looked at everything in terms of an application of Dr. Taguchi's ideas. 0:03:29.7 AS: And one question about Taguchi for those people that don't know him and understand a little bit about him, was he... If I think about where Dr. Deming got at the end of his life, it was about a whole system, the System of Profound Knowledge and a comprehensive way of looking at things. Was Taguchi similar in that way or was he focused in on a couple different areas where he really made his contribution? 0:04:03.9 BB: Narrower than Dr. Deming's work. I mean, if we look at... And thank you for that... If we look at Dr. Deming's work in terms of the System of Profound Knowledge, the elements of systems psychology, variation, theory of knowledge, Taguchi's work is a lot about variation and a lot about systems. And not systems in the sense of Russ Ackoff systems thinking, but variation in the sense of where's the variation coming from looking upstream, what are the causes of that variation that create variation in that product, in that service? 0:04:50.9 BB: And then coupled with that is that, how is that variation impacting elsewhere in the system? So here I am receiving sources of variation. So what I deliver it to you has variation because of what's upstream of me and Taguchi's looking at that coupled with how is that variation impacting you? So those are the systems side, the variation side. Now, is there anything in Deming, in Taguchi's work about psychology and what happens when you're labelling workers and performance appraisals and, no, not at all. 0:05:37.6 AS: Okay, got it. 0:05:38.4 BB: Is there anything in there about theory of knowledge, how do we know that what we know is so? No, but there's a depth of work in variation which compliments very much so what Dr. Deming was doing. So anyway, so no. And so I discovered Taguchi's work, and I mentioned that in the first episode. I discovered his work, became fascinated with it, started looking at his ideas in terms of managing variation to achieve incredible... I mean, improved uniformity to the extent that it's worthwhile to achieve. So we were not striving for the ultimate uniformity, it's just the idea that we can manage the uniformity. And if we... And we'll look at this in more detail later, but for our audience now, if you think of a distribution of the variation in the performance of a product or a service, and you think in terms of... It doesn't have to be a bell-shaped distribution, but you have a distribution and it has an average and it has variation. 0:06:50.4 BB: What Dr. Taguchi's work is about in terms of a very brief, succinct point here in episode two is how might we change the shape of that distribution? How might we make it narrower, if that's a worthwhile adventure? It may be worthwhile to make it wider, not just narrower, but in both cases, we're changing the shape of the distribution and changing the location. So Taguchi's work, Taguchi's Methods, driven by variation comes to me, variation impacts you is how do I change the shape and location of that distribution? So on a regular basis, as I became more fascinated with that, I started thinking about, well, how might I apply Taguchi's ideas to these things that I encountered every day? Well, prior to that before discovering Taguchi's work, when I was a facilitator in problem solving and decision making training, I did the same thing, Andrew. 0:07:52.4 BB: I started looking at, oh, is this a problem? Is this a decision? Is this a situation that needs to be appraised? And so prior to that, what I was thinking about is when I was just a heat transfer analyst working on my Ph.D., I didn't look at how the heat transfer stuff affected all these other aspects of my lives. I didn't think about it when I went into a supermarket, but there was something about the problem solving and decision making that just infatuated me. And I would look at, oh, is Andrew talking about a decision or is Andrew talking about a problem? So I started hearing things. And so when I went into Taguchi's work, it was the same thing. And then shifting into Deming's work, it's the same thing. And I've... There's nothing else that I've studied that I look at things through those lenses. Anyway, so in studying, getting exposed to Taguchi, I mentioned that I had some time away from work, I went out on medical for some reasons and went and bought a book, a bunch of books. 0:09:02.4 BB: And one of the books I bought by David Garvin had come out in 1987, is entitled "The Eight Dimensions of Quality." There's a Harvard Business Review article that I wanna reference in this episode, and I'll put a link to the article. It's a free link. And so when you hear people talk about a quality product or a quality service or quality healthcare. We think in terms of it's quality as things, it's either good quality or bad quality or high quality, or somebody calls it low quality, or we just say it's a quality product. But what does that mean? So what I find is very loosely, we think in terms of categories of quality, good, bad, high, low. What we'll look at in a future episode is what would happen if we thought about quality on a continuum, which I believe Taguchi's work really demonstrates vividly as well as Dr. Deming's work. 0:10:07.4 BB: But even to back up before we talk about the eight dimensions of quality, I wanted to give some background on the word quality. The word quality, and this comes from an article and I'll put a link to this article, I wrote it for the Lean Management Journal a number of years ago, the word quality has Latin roots, beginning as qualitas, T-A-S, coined by the Roman philosopher and statesman, Marcus Tullius Cicero. He later became an adversary of this bad guy named Mark Antony. You've heard of him. Feared by Antony, this guy was feared by Antony because his power of speech led, you know what it led to, Andrew, his power of speech? 0:10:54.5 AS: What? 0:10:54.6 BB: His beheading. 0:10:55.8 AS: Oh my goodness. 0:10:56.5 BB: So for those of you with great powers of speech, watch out for your Mark Antony. But meanwhile, he introduced fellow Romans to the vocabulary of qualitas, quantitas, quantity, humanitas, humanities, essentia, which is, essence, he also is credited with an extensive list of expressions that translate into English today. Difference, infinity, science, morale. Cicero spoke of qualitas with his peers when focusing on the essential nature, character or property of an object. And this is kind of interesting. I mean, you can count how many apples do we have. And again, he came up with the term quantitas for quantity, but he is also talking about the essence of the apples. That's the quality word. And then 2000 years later when writing "The New Economics", Dr. Deming provided his definition and a little bit different. 0:12:05.3 BB: He says, "The problem anywhere is quality. What is quality?" Says the good doctor, "A product or service possesses quality if it helps somebody, it enjoys a good and sustainable market." And I said in the article, "As with Cicero, Deming saw quality as a property." And then some other background on quality before I talk about Garvin, "long after Cicero and well before Deming, quality as a property was a responsibility of guilds." Guilds. I mean, now we have writers guilds, we have actors guilds, and it's kind of cool that these guilds still exist and they are associations of artisans who control the practice of their craft, each with a revered trademark. So here in Los Angeles, we have writers guilds, actors guilds. They were organized as professional societies, just like unions. 0:13:00.2 BB: And these fraternities were developed, and within these fraternities they created standards for high quality. All right. So what is this quality management stuff from David Garvin? So this article was written 37 years ago and reviewing it for tonight's episode and I thought it fit in really, really well. I was reminded of... First time I read this article, 1989, I knew a lot about... Well, I knew, I was excited about Taguchi as I knew a lot about Taguchi, didn't know a lot about Dr. Deming. So I'm now reviewing it years later with a much deeper, broader Deming perspective than at that time. But I do believe, and I would encourage the listeners to get ahold of the article, look at it, if you wanna go into more depth, there's Garvin's book. And doing some research for tonight, I found out that he passed away in 2017, seven or so years ago. 0:14:04.6 BB: He was, I guess from, most of his career and education he was at the Harvard Business School, very well respected there. And so in the article it talks about, again, this, 1987, that's the era of Total Quality Management. That's the era in which Dr. Deming was attracting 2000 people to go to his seminars. 1987 is two years before Six Sigma Quality, two years before “The Machine That Changed The World.” And in the article, he says, "Part of the problem, of course, is that Japanese and European competition have intensified. Not many companies tried to make quality programs work even as they implemented them." This is back when quality was an era of quality circles. He says, "In my view, most of the principles about quality were narrow in scope. They were designed as purely defensive measures to preempt failures or eliminate defects, eliminate red beads." 0:15:10.3 BB: "What managers need now is an aggressive strategy to gain and hold markets with high quality," there we go again, "as a competitive linchpin." All right. So in the article, he has some interesting explanations of... Highlights. In the book is more depth. He talks about Joseph Juran, "Juran's Quality Handbook". Juran observed that quality could be understood in terms of avoidable and unavoidable costs. Dr. Deming talked about the economics. The New Economics, right? But Juran is looking at avoidable, unavailable costs resulting from defects in product failures. That's very traditional quality today. The latter associated with prevention, inspection, sampling, sorting, quality control. And so this is what I found fascinating, is 37 years later, this is still the heavy sense of what quality is all about. Avoiding failure, avoiding defects. 0:16:18.3 BB: Then he talks about Total Quality Control coming from Armand Feigenbaum, who was a big name in the '80s. Again Dr. Deming's work kind of created this big quality movement but it wasn't just Dr. Deming people discovered, they discovered Philip Crosby in a Zero Defects advocacy, Feigenbaum, Juran, sometime later. Again, mid '80s, Dr. Taguchi's name started to be heard. All right. And then the reliability. All right. Now I wanna get into the... Oh, here's, this is good. "In 1961, the Martin Corporation, Martin Company was building Pershing missiles for the US Army. The design of the missile was sound, but Martin found that it could maintain high quality only through massive inspection programs." 0:17:13.0 BB: You know what Dr. Deming would say about inspection? It's after the fact. Sorting the good ones from the bad ones after the fact. No prevention there. But Martin found that it could only do it with inspection. And decided to offer... Again, this is 1961, and this is still the solution today, decided to offer workers incentives to lower the defect rate. And in December, 1961, delivered a Pershing missile to Cape Canaveral with zero discrepancies. Buoyed by this success, Martin's general manager in Florida accepted a challenge issued by the Army's missile command to deliver the first Pershing missile one month ahead of schedule. He went even further, he promised that the missile would be perfect. Perfect. You know what that means, Andrew? 0:18:12.3 AS: Tell us. 0:18:12.8 BB: All good, not bad. 0:18:14.9 AS: All good, not bad. 0:18:15.9 BB: He promised missile would be perfect with no hardware problems or document errors, and that all equipment would be fully operational 10 days after delivering. And so what was neat in going back to this is we still have this mindset that quality is about things being good, not bad. What is bad we call that scrap, we call that rework. That's alive and well today. 0:18:45.0 AS: The proclamations are interesting when you listen to what he's saying, when you're quoting that. 0:18:52.4 BB: Yeah, no, and I remember, 'cause again, I read this recently for the first time in 37 years and I'm going through it. And at the time I was thinking, "Wow, wow, wow, this is a really big deal. This is a really big deal." Now I look at it and say, "This is what we're still talking about today, 37 years later." The absence of defects is the essence of quality. All right. But so I would highly recommend the article. Now we get into what he proposes as eight critical dimensions of quality that can serve as a framework for strategic analysis. And I think even in a Deming environment, I think it's... I think what's really cool about this is it provides a broad view of quality that I think Deming's work fits in very well to, Dr. Taguchi's work fits in very well to, and I think covers a lot of what people call quality. So the first dimension he talks about is performance. 0:20:01.4 BB: And he says, "Of course, performance refers to a product's primary operating characteristics." He says, "For an automobile, performance would include traits like acceleration, handling, cruising speed. For a television, sound and picture clarity." He says "A power shovel in the excavation business that excavates 100 cubic yards per hour will outperform one that excavates 10 cubic yards per hour." So the capacity, that could be miles per gallon, carrying capacity, the resolution of the pixels, that's what he calls performance. Okay. Features is the second dimension of quality. Examples include free drinks on an airplane, but not if you're flying a number of airlines they charge you for those drinks, permanent press cycles on a washing machine, automatic tuners on a color television set. A number of people in our audience won't know what those are, bells and whistles. Features are bells and whistles. 0:21:17.2 BB: There was a time people would say the number of cup holders in your automobile, a feature could be intermittent wipers. So these are features. So again, I mean, so performance is kind of cool. What is the capacity, is it 100 horsepower, 200 horsepower, that's performance. Features, bells and whistles. Okay. Fine. Reliability, now we're talking. The dimension represents the probability of a product malfunctioning or failing within a specified period of time. So your car breaking down, are you gonna drive to work every day and one morning you're gonna go out and it's... That's a reliability issue. Okay. That's... When I think about reliability, that's a Taguchi thing, that's a Deming thing. And looking at time between failures, okay, fine. Reliability comes down to... And if importance for the impact of downtime, if you're looking at engines not working and you're sitting at the gate, that's a reliability issue. The reliability is, it can be repaired, but it's gonna take some time, perhaps. Conformance. All right. 0:22:40.4 AS: Is number four, right? 0:22:42.2 BB: This is number four, a related dimension of quality is conformance or the degree to which a product's design and operating characteristics meet established standards. "This dimension owes to the importance of traditional approaches," it says, "to quality pioneers such as Juran." All products and services involve specifications of some sort. When new designs or models are developed, dimensions are set for parts or purity, these specifications are normally expressed as a target or a center. Now it's starting to sound a little bit like Dr. Taguchi's work, an ideal value, deviance from the center within a specified range. But this approach equates good quality with operating inside the tolerance band. There is little interest in whether the specifications have been met exactly. For the most part, dispersion within specifications is ignored. Ignored. That's balls and strikes, Andrew, balls and strikes. 0:23:51.2 BB: As long as the ball is somewhere in the strike zone, as long as the characteristic is somewhere within requirements, conformance, this gets into what I talk about in terms of the question number one of quality management. Has the requirement been met, the requirement for the performance, the dimension, is it within requirements? And there's only two answers, yes or no. That's conformance. I used to think that the American Society for Quality might be better known as the American Society for the Preservation of Conformance. I find there's a lot of conformance thinking. I'm reminded of, I'm a member of the American Society for Quality as I'm on the Deming Medal Committee, so I have to be a member of ASQ. So I get a daily or every other day newsletter with comments and conformance is a big part of the conversation. Good parts and bad parts, scrap and rework. All right. 0:25:02.3 BB: Conformance is number four. And it's not to say there isn't a place for the conformance, but conformance is then again different from what Dr. Taguchi is talking about. All right. Durability, the measure of a product life. Durability has both economic and technical dimensions. Durability is how long does it work before I throw it away? So reliability is about, I can repair it. Okay. And that's an inconvenience. Durability is like light bulbs. It runs and runs or a refrigerator and someone says, "Well, it's time for a new one." That's a durability issue. Okay. Durability is the amount of use you get before you haul it off to the junkyard. That's durability. Okay. Serviceability. And back in the '60s, now I'm dating myself, there would be commercials for... I don't know which television brand, but what they talked about is, and these would be commercials. Commercials on television as to "our TV is easy to repair." And I thought, is that a good thing? [laughter] 0:26:22.4 AS: Is that a foreboding? 0:26:24.4 BB: Yeah. And so... But again, the last couple of days I had to fix the sprinkler system in the backyard. And here in California we have, everybody has a sprinkler system. In the East Coast, people have above ground sprinkler systems. Here, they're all below ground. You don't have to worry about the lines freezing, at least in Los Angeles. And so anyway, one of the valves broke and I thought I was gonna buy a new one and take some of the parts from the new one to put it into the old one. And that didn't quite work. And so meaning to say, serviceability on the design was awful. I couldn't service it. 0:27:11.5 BB: I had to replace the whole damn thing, which was a lot more work than I was expecting. Anyway, however they designed it, serviceability didn't seem to be a consideration in the... That's dimension number six. Again, not to say there's anything wrong with thinking about serviceability. In terms of... Yeah. Okay, I'll leave it with that. Okay, serviceability. Number seven, aesthetics. The final two dimensions of quality are the most subjective, aesthetics, how a product looks, feels, sounds, taste, or smells is clearly a matter of personal judgment. Nevertheless, there seem to be patterns, a rich and full flavor aroma. 0:28:01.0 BB: That's got nothing to do with Dr. Taguchi's work. I mean, you can go off and do market research, find out what is the most appealing flavor, the most appealing taste, the most appealing aroma. And this is what I used to tell students is, and once you understand that or that vivid color that attracts the customer, then you could use Dr. Taguchi's work for, how can I reliably, predictably recreate, week after week, day by day, car by car, that aroma, that flavor, but Taguchi's work is not gonna tell you what it is. And then the last dimension of quality, you ready, Andrew? 0:28:45.8 AS: Give it to me, Bill. 0:28:47.7 BB: Perceived quality. "Consumers do not always have complete information on a product's attributes and direct measure is maybe their only basis. A product's durability can seldom be observed." And so we talk about perceptions of quality. Again, this is 1987, he says, "For this reason, Honda, which makes cars in Marysville, Ohio, and Sony, which builds color TVs have been reluctant to publicize that their products..." Ready? "Are made in America." Because the perception in 1987 is we want them to be made in Japan. And then we could talk about the perception of Cadillac quality, the perception of Jaguar quality. 0:29:35.7 BB: My father's gas station back in the early '70s, it was a block away from the nearby hospital. So a lot of our customers were doctors and they came in in their Cadillacs and Mercedes. And it was just a lot of fun. It was pretty cool. And one doctor against all of his peers' recommendations bought a Jaguar XJ12, V12, 12 cylinders, and they told him again and again, they said, "It'll spend more time in the shop than you driving it." No, no, no, he had to have one, he had to have one. And sure enough, it spent most of the time in the shop, but I got to drive it now and then, which was pretty cool. But that's perceived quality. 0:30:27.5 BB: So I just wanted to, in this episode, throughout those eight dimensions of quality. Again, I encourage our listeners, viewers, I think to get a broader sense of quality before you just look at quality from Dr. Deming's perspective, quality from anyone else's. I think that Garvin has done a really good job covering eight bases, if I can use that term, of quality. And then what I think is neat is to look at which of these tie into Deming's work, which of these tie into Dr. Taguchi's work? And that's what I wanted to cover in this episode. 0:31:01.8 AS: Fantastic. Well, let's just review that for the listeners and the viewers out there, eight dimensions. The first one is performance, the second one is features, the third one is reliability, the fourth one is conformance, the fifth one is durability, the sixth one is serviceability, the seventh one is aesthetics, how it feels and all that, and then the eighth one is perceived quality. Woah, that was... 0:31:29.4 BB: All about... Yeah. And it is reputation. You either have a great reputation or not. 0:31:38.3 AS: All right. Turns out the BMW 850CSi has the shortest gear ratios of any V-12 car ever sold — and Jason is a self-described whore for short gearing. Meanwhile, Derek bought a V12, manual Ferrari that has no compression in several cylinders. The main subject of the episode is one of Jason and Derek's many friend-group backroad trips in Northern California. As usual, it was a varied group of cars: Jason brought "Beatrice," his E30 BMW 325i sedan. Derek brought his race-prepped Mk5 Volkswagen GTI. Also present was a BMW Z3 2.8, an NA Miata, a GR Corolla, and one car that was very much not appropriate for tight mountain roads: A C126 Mercedes 560SEC. And the Mercedes was, by far, everyone's favorite. Wildly obese and far too large, with non-performance tires, the W126-chassis Mercedes should have been miserable. And what it instead demonstrated was perfect chassis balance, an indefatigable, 300-hp Euro/Japan-spec 5.5-liter engine, and a riotous time.
