If you're concerned about eating disorders or body image issues, whether you need support for yourself or someone you care about, you can call the Butterfly Foundation on 1800 33 4673.  Picture something that absolutely terrifies you. Now, imagine you're forced to confront it multiple times a day – and nobody understands why it makes you feel distressed.  Dr Sarah Maguire, the director of the InsideOut Institute, says this is the reality many people with an eating disorder face at meal times. “You might as well be putting a plate of spiders in front of that person and asking them to eat it,” she says.  More than one million Australians are living with an eating disorder (such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, or binge eating) and anorexia is the nation's deadliest mental illness. Dr Maguire teaches you the signs to look out for, the risks around social media, and how to help someone recover from a “completely curable” illness.   She also sheds light on the “vicious cycle” she says is holding back research and treatments.  And you'll hear from 16-year-old Isla and her mother Sara, who reflect on what they've learned navigating Isla's path to recovery. It's essential listening for any parent.  The InsideOut Institute is at the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney, where Dr Maguire is also a professor.  +++  The Solutionists is podcast from the University of Sydney, produced by Deadset Studios. The PTC has just published Aulò! Aulò! Aulò! a collection of poems and fables by Ribka Sibhatu with translations by André Naffis-Sahely as part of our World Poet Series. Ribka writes in Tigrinya and Amharic, two languages native to Eritrea as well as Italian and French. The poet calls her five languages her stepdaughters. She translates her own work into Italian and Andre, in turn, translates the Italian and English. The collaboration has been going for a decade since André began translating her work in 2010. At that time Sarah Maguire, founder of the PTC, invited him to lead a series of workshops on Sibhatu’s poetry. Ribka’s work includes short lyric poems and her more recent longer political works. Alongside her poetry Ribka has worked to collect and record the folkloric canon of the horn of Africa, a body of oral literature that was handed down for generations These stories are known as Aulòs, literally meaning: Please give me permission, I have something to say in rhyme! So today we will be playing you one poem and one fable so you can get a sense of the breadth of her work, this means it is a long 20-minute podcast. Enjoy.

Episode 5 of our neuroscience and literature podcast looks at emotions and the body with as much objectivity as it can muster. The two texts under discussion drill down into how (and where in the body) we feel things, what it is that we call emotion, and how feelings change or persist over time. Sarah Maguire‘s “The Hearing Cure” (a poem from her 1997 collection The Invisible Mender: https://www.poetryarchive.org/poet/sarah-maguire) uses pain, fear and relief associated with illness in the present to make a memory map of motherly love. Do we remember childhood emotions? When do we start organising impressions into a story? “Bodily Maps of Emotions” by Lauri Nummenmaa et al (https://www.pnas.org/content/111/2/646) investigates the locations of somatic response in the body and reaches some striking conclusions: laughter (but not its meaning) translates across cultures as a socially acceptable non-verbal expression, crows know what it is to be looked at, and sadness is oddly hard to place. Sophie and Will have a polite disagreement about recognition, but a false dichotomy – are emotions inherited or cultural? – brings them back together again. Happy Days. (S. Beckett – that's in there, too).
