"Black Midi" are a four piece rock band from London, often described as a mixture of noise rock, post-punk, jazz and progressive rock.Black Midi's members all met while studying music at the BRIT school, an infamous school in the world of UK music whose former pupils include King Krule, Amy Winehouse and Adelle. They would spend their time outside of studying to get together and jam in the school rehearsal rooms, a process which eventually led them to perform live at Brixton's "Windmill" live music venue. It was at this venue that music producer Dan Carey saw them play and offered his services to record and produce some of their material, an opportunity that would see them record in a studio for the very first time.Fast forward to late 2021 and "Black Midi" have released two full length albums as well as a selection of EP's and live recordings. These guys are young, incredibly talented and produce some very intense and intricate music. On this episode of Roots to Grooves Jay and Jesse dive deeper and play some of their favorite tracks."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Despite a sparse digital presence and just one studio-recorded song, elusive math rock quartet Black Midi carved out a cult following in the late 2010s. A handful of video recordings of their live shows and the 2018 single "bmbmbmbm" were strong enough to gather significant buzz around their meticulously constructed yet feral rock sounds. Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Geordie Greep, lead guitarist Matt Kelvin, bassist Cameron Picton, and drummer Morgan Simpson, the Croydon, England four-piece formed after graduating from the performing arts institution The BRIT School in 2017. In contrast to the more mainstream acts the school has produced -- including Amy Winehouse and the Kooks -- Black Midi produced angular, experimental post-punk. Forming part of a South London scene alongside acts like Shame, Goat Girl, and HMLTD, the newly minted band became a regular at Brixton's favorite new-band haunt The Windmill. Unlike their peers, Black Midi maintained a mysterious air by conducting hardly any interviews and largely shunning social media. Yet they soon earned media notice with their intense live shows, and in 2018 the band performed a live session for radio station NTS at Flesh & Bone Studios in Hackney. Later that year they released their debut single on producer Dan Carey's (Bat for Lashes, Kate Tempest) Speedy Wunderground label. The song "bmbmbmbm" was a jittery and delirious track, built on tight grooves and explosions of noise. The band's debut LP, Schlagenheim, arrived in the summer of 2019.

Welcome to week 10 of The Spotlight where Sarah Mae and Aaron highlight and discuss their favorite records! This week, Sarah Mae opened the show with “Sofia” by Clairo off of her 2019 summer release, ‘Immunity.' Clairo is a 21-year-old artist who grew up in a small town in Massachusetts. Her rise to bedroom-pop fame was skyrocketed by her refreshingly simple music video to “Pretty Girl” in 2017. Sarah Mae discusses how ‘Immunity' is a coming-of-age album through and through. She also draws parallels between ‘Immunity' and ‘Apollo XXI,' a record that was discussed earlier in the season. In the second half of the show, Aaron highlighted ‘Schlagenheim' by UK-based band black midi. ‘Schlagenheim' is the first record for black midi, who was formed in 2015. The album received critical acclaim, gaining the band their first-ever Mercury Prize nomination. Aaron discusses the ways that the band blends elements of jazz, post-punk and math rock together to create a sound unlike most artists today. He is also a huge fan of black midi's drummer, Morgan Simpson. Unfortunately, we will not be having our regularly scheduled LIVE show on November 25. (We're going to see Brockhampton, yeehaw!) We'll be back for our SEASON FINALE on December 2st! But, please give our previous episodes on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Anchor.fm a listen!
