Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra. In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean. Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat. Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year. Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art. Record store owner and self-professed 'music geek' David Lewis (Elizabeth's Records - Columbus, OH) thinks we should never stop discovering new (to us) music. He's right. Around 10 years ago he came upon the 1972 debut album by German experimental rock group Agitation Free, 'Malesch'. A mysterious fusion of psychedelia, experimental krautrock and world music, it's a fascinating snapshot of a band working together to create a trippy, ethereal and unique wall of sound. Songs featured in this episode: Laila III - Agitation Free (Live in Paris ORTF Studio, 1973); Future Games - Fleetwood Mac; Hallogallo - Neu!; Phaedra - Tangerine Dream; Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Black Sabbath; Winning - The Sound; You Play For Us Today, Sahara City - Agitation Free; New Dawn Fades - New Order; Ala Tul - Agitation Free; Supernaut - Black Sabbath; Outside Tokyo - The Stranglers; Pulse - Agitation Free; Departure From The Northern Wasteland - Michael Hoenig; Pruit Igoe - Philip Glass; Khan El Khalili - Agitation Free; Jessica - The Allman Brothers; No One Is There - Nico; V-2 Schneider - David Bowie; Malesch - Agitation Free; Utopia III (excerpt) - Thomas Kessler; Malesch, Rücksturz - Agitation Free; Emka - My Education; Music Factory - Agitation Free (Live Mainz Germany, 1972)

"Black Midi" are a four piece rock band from London, often described as a mixture of noise rock, post-punk, jazz and progressive rock.Black Midi's members all met while studying music at the BRIT school, an infamous school in the world of UK music whose former pupils include King Krule, Amy Winehouse and Adelle. They would spend their time outside of studying to get together and jam in the school rehearsal rooms, a process which eventually led them to perform live at Brixton's "Windmill" live music venue. It was at this venue that music producer Dan Carey saw them play and offered his services to record and produce some of their material, an opportunity that would see them record in a studio for the very first time.Fast forward to late 2021 and "Black Midi" have released two full length albums as well as a selection of EP's and live recordings. These guys are young, incredibly talented and produce some very intense and intricate music. Minus The Bear (and Botch) guitarist, Dave Knudson joined us to talk about a naked-Botch show witnessed by teenage Benny, home studio techniques, silly porn names and his 9yr. old's beat making attempts.
Our guest is Dr. Heather Graham, organic geochemist and research associate from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Graham's research focuses on the scientific development of tools and techniques that can help us identify “agnostic biosignatures” – evidence of living systems that may not share common biochemistry with life on Earth. Dr. Graham is also involved in studying the asteroid samples returned by the Hayabusa 2 mission. In addition to her work as an astrobiologist, she also co-wrote and directed an experimental rock opera about "Hidden Figures" Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughn, more than 2 years before Hollywood. How does a band like Pink Floyd follow up “The Dark Side of the Moon” AND “Wish You Were Here”, two of the most commercially successful and globally revered albums of all time? “Animals” may be viewed as the black sheep sandwiched between three of the band’s most famous albums, but does it deserve to stand on its own as one of Pink Floyd’s strongest? Episode 34 covers the tenth Pink Floyd studio album, 1977’s “Animals” and for this episode, we are joined by our second special guest, father of Mark and Kevin, Mr. Michael Nadolski, who’s here to share his love for Pink Floyd and “Animals” in particular. Episode 30 covers the sixth Pink Floyd studio album, 1971's "Meddle." With no material to work with and no clear idea of the album's direction, the band devised a series of novel experiments which eventually inspired the album's signature track "Echoes". Although the band's later albums would be unified by a central theme with lyrics written entirely by Roger Waters, Meddle was a group effort with lyrical contributions from each member, and is considered a transitional album between the Syd Barrett-influenced group of the late 1960s and the emerging Pink Floyd. Mark, Kevin, Alex, and Chris take you on a historical journey surrounding the album as well as share our favorites and not-so favorites from the record. We go on a deep dive track-by-track listen of this progressive rock album as well as share personal stories of discovering Pink Floyd's "Meddle." Independent musician Glenn Case is back, this time on an album discussion episode! After winning the PLAY DISC Request Lottery at the end of last episode, Glenn agreed to join us for the discussion on The Dismemberment Plan's 1999 album Emergency & I. OVer the course of our conversation, we discuss... Glenn's occasional correspondence with Dismemberment Plan frontman Travis Morrison, including Morrison's reaction upon learning we were doing this episode Jon and Harrison's difficulty in trying to identify any preceding influence that might explain this album The multiple songs on this album that have odd time signatures, and the one where it was most noticeable ("Is there such thing as seven-and-a-half over four?") The relationship between computer coding and writing these types of songs The early articulation of the idea of "emotional labor" in "Memory Machine" Some discordant vocal melody choices and how they lead to "breakthroughs" as the songs evolve The album's themes of loneliness, struggle, isolation, desperation... The human condition Comparing the hormonal libidinous "Girl O'Clock" with Joe Jacksons' hormonal libidinous "Pretty Girls" Harrison finds an unlikely point of comparison in an anime (who had that on their Bingo card?) We aim to preserve unique atmosphere of our old landscapes that are currently changing with centralised themes around the city of Katowice, and it's agglomeration. We do it with a help of synthesis of a sound and picture, creating themes of lost time and decay of old architectural ideas like industrial manufactures, steelworks and buildings slowly turning into dust making way for new landscapes that are taking place of the ones that we used to know. Our equipment and forms of expression are not strict, they are selected to suit our current interests and a form of an expression, although we use industrial music, new wave melodic themes and analogue electronic music as our basis. This week's Soul Traveller Radio Show is a special replay of one of our favourite interviews of 2017. Shayne Locke chats with Jon Anderson, lead singer of Yes and one half of Jon and Vangelis about his project Anderson Stolt and the new album Invention of Knowledge. The conversation goes beyond the standard rock questions as they dive into Jon’s spirituality and his work with Divine Mother. A brilliant way to finish 2017 – Soul Traveller Radio Show Extended Edition with Jon Anderson.

Check out our website to see this episode's notes w/ added features! www.podpunkshow.com This week Aaron and John focus on Long Island's, Brand New, and their unexpected 5th full-length, "Science Fiction". They go over why this band is not just another staple of the 2000's pop punk/emo music scene. The well-received, Science Fiction (2017), securing a number one spot on the "Billboard's Top 200 Chart" and the overall feel and direction of, what could be, the band's final release. Also, the boys trade stories over the candy warheads, talk Bruno Mars, Kevin Smith, and try to understand the enigma that is... Nick Cage. Finally - Bronx, the show's resident French Bulldog, surprises everyone with a well thought out segment on what neighborhoods really mean when they post a "Curb Your Dog" sign. Josh is back! This week we're talking about Festicide, an anti-festival showcasing some of Portlands best hardcore, underground, and experimental rock bands. It's a direst response to the bloated waterfront monstrosity that is Project Pabst/MFNW. We talk about pot pies, Rabbits, Portland's changing music landscape, and we play Drew's favorite segment, Mood Music.

The Barren’s is unlike most bands you will encounter. They do not easily fit within any specific genre category. Rather, they conform to many including Psychedelic Rock, Experimental Rock, Alternative, and Rock, blending the familiar sounds of Pink Floyd, the Ramones, The Pixies, The Shins, Radiohead, and Temper Trap. Founded in upstate New York, Debbie Chou, Colin Fitz, Chris Gersbeck, Mike Koene, and Jay Sharp relocated in New York City to pursue their music careers as The Barrens. The Barrens has one previous EP called, Worming. Three years later in 2011, The Barrens released their latest and full length album and simply called it, The Barrens. The LP begins with the title, “Claw Remains,” a very pseudo Pink Floyd song, then transitions into a very psychedelic, yet heavy metal track called, “Felt” which has an almost Black Sabbath sound with a thunderous guitar introduction played by Colin Fitz (Fitzgerald), Mike Koene, and Debbie Chou. When the song breaks into vocals, it’s hard not to compare Fitz’s voice to Black Francis of the Alternative Rock band, the Pixies. In the next track called, “Bottem of the Well,” the band takes a new direction and delivers a sound that is both indie rock and perhaps surf rock-esk, that is more harmonious and less heavy metal, because the song is up beat, fast paced and appears to include the vocals from all five members of the band. “In and of Ice” is not just a song, but also a journey as they incorporate the bass drum, tambourine throughout the song. Include the angelic voice of Debbie Chou, and you have a unique yet enjoyable song from beginning to end. The entire The Barrens album is hard to turn away from. Without being aware, you might find yourself listening to every track again and again. Why? Simply because its unpredictable. There are a lot of hills and valleys and when you think you have them figured out, they change in another direction, making it even more enjoyable then the previous song. While The Barrens may fall outside of the mainstream formula, you will be compelled to give it a second glance or you may do what I did and find yourself listening for hours and hours, not realizing you were caught in a “barren” trance.
