We had the pleasure of interviewing Kill The Lights over Zoom video!Certain bonds cross any and all borders and boundaries. Kill The Lights harbor this kind of connection between them. Even though you've got Michael “Moose” Thomas [drums] and Jason “Jay” James [bass] in Bridgend, Wales, James Clark [vocals] in Minneapolis, MN, Jordan Whelan [guitar] in Grand Rapids, MI, and Travis Montgomery [guitar] in Dallas, TX, the musicians lock into an impenetrable groove that eclipses physical distance. Together, they rally around a tight, taut, and tough vision for heavy metal, manifesting in rafter-reaching anthems and pit-splitting riffs. After piling up millions of streams and earning acclaim from the likes of KERRANG! and Metal Hammer, a sense of unwavering unity drives their second full-length offering, Death Melodies [Fearless Records].Of course, the musicians boast an incredible pedigree… Moose co-founded multiplatinum international heavyweights Bullet For My Valentine, while Jay also played in the band. James fronted Throw The Fight, and Jordan and Travis handled guitar duties for Still Remains and Threat Signal, respectively. Upon forming Kill The Lights, they uncovered uncontainable chemistry, releasing their debut LP The Sinner in the midst of the global pandemic. Among many highlights, “The Faceless” posted up 2 million-plus Spotify streams and counting followed by “Through The Night” and “Shed My Skin,” which each crossed the 1 million mark. Metal Hammer rated it “4-out-of-5 stars” and proclaimed, “Kill The Lights nail the groove and the glory.” Along the way, they wrote and recorded Death Melodies with sessions in Canada, Minneapolis, and across the pond in the UK with producers Chris Clancy and Colin Richardson. A complex theme coursed through the music. “Everybody struggles with different things,” states James. “These are songs about acknowledging and sharing the struggle in life. You're acknowledging the world is a hard place. Hopefully, you can find some solace in it by knowing another person feels the same way."Fittingly, they bust through the door of the next era with the single “Broken Bones.” On the track, galloping drums propel a thrashed-out riff at full speed towards a hummable hook, “You're dead inside, but still alive. There's nothing left but broken bones.” “Much of the record centered around depression and dealing with anxiety,” James goes on. “So, ‘Broken Bones' is about battling your way through life, but sticking with it.”Vulnerable acoustic guitar sets the tone for “Sleep With The Devil” as tension swells into an emotionally charged skyscraping refrain uplifted by a six-part choir harmony. “It's stuff you don't hear too much on a metal record,” Jordan comments. “It stretches the places we can go.”A sinewy guitar line snakes through the understated trudge of “Bleeding,” which is about “living a recurring nightmare and never being able to break the chain.” Then, there's “From Ashes.” Guitar swings like a wrecking ball from melodic verses towards a magnetic refrain. The ride concludes on the transfixing closer “Drowning” as distortion submerges an ethereal chorus.“It had a bit of a grungy vibe to it,” Jordan goes on. “We added some different dynamics on the record that weren't there on the first one.” In the end, Kill The Lights invite everyone to partake in their bond now.We want to hear from you! THE Mike Gormley INTERVIEW SERIES ON TJS Our Special Guest today is Dan Navarro. Dan Navarro's journey began as a songwriter, often with the late Eric Lowen, for artists as diverse as Pat Benatar (the Grammy-nominated “We Belong”) , The Bangles, Jackson Browne, Dave Edmunds, The Temptations, Dionne Warwick, The Triplets, Dutch star Marco Borsato, and Austin outlaw legend Rusty Weir. In the 1990s and 2000s, Dan and Eric recorded and toured as the acclaimed acoustic duo Lowen & Navarro until Eric's retirement in 2009 (and passing in 2012). Dan has transitioned smoothly into a busy solo career over the past dozen years, touring nationally almost constantly. Dan maintains a parallel career as a voice actor and singer, in major films like The Playmobil Movie (coming in November, 2019), Pirates of the Caribbean 5, The Book Of Life, Rio (on the Oscar®-nominated song “Real In Rio”), The Lorax, Oscar® winners Coco and Happy Feet; TV series Family Guy, American Dad, Elena of Avalor, Sofia the First and Prison Break; records with Neil Young, Andrea Bocelli, Luis Miguel, Jose Feliciano, Janiva Magness, and Jon Anderson of Yes; hit video games Red Dead Redemption II, Fallout 4 and Uncharted 4, and hundreds of TV ads for Honda, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Nationwide, Subaru, Shakey's and more. He has advocated for artists and songwriters, on behalf of SAG-AFTRA, the Nashville Songwriters Assn Int'l, Folk Allaince International, SoundExchange, The Recording Academy, musicFIRST, BMI and the musicFIRST Coalition, including testimony in Washington before the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Copyright Royalty Board. Dan is on the National and Local Boards of SAG-AFTRA and is a Trustee on the AFM / SAG-AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund. In 2009, after more than 20 years and 12 CDs and digital albums with Lowen & Navarro, Dan released the spirited “Live at McCabe's”, backed by his pals, Austin's now-disbanded country-rock powerhouse, Stonehoney. His new album, “Shed My Skin”, produced by Steve Postell, is out now. Dan has a 24-year-old son, thinks sleep is for babies and is a known abuser of acoustic guitars. Host Note (Jeremiah) P.S. We had the pleasure of interviewing Kill The Lights over Zoom video! Heavy music exists independent of eras, trends, and borders. It resonates worldwide on the most primal and natural level. Kill The Lights similarly transcend creative and physical boundaries. Uniting original Bullet For My Valentine co-founder Michael “Moose” Thomas [drums] with Throw The Fight frontman James Clark [vocals], Jordan Whelan of Still Remains [guitar], and Travis Montgomery of Threat Signal [guitar], the group seamlessly brings a shared vision to life. Streamed over 1 million times in under a year and hailed by Rock Sound, KERRANG!, Metal Hammer, and more, the quartet imprint tried-and-true metal with 21st century fire on their upcoming Fearless Records full-length debut.“We all loved the idea of having some of those throwback elements with a fresh sound,” exclaims James. “We aimed for something classic either a 15-year-old or 50-year-old could enjoy. It came out naturally by virtue of us working together. It’s not contrived. We give reverence to our influences, but Kill The Lights is its own entity.”“We simply made music with no pressure and wrote what naturally came out,” adds Moose.Jordan agrees, “Writing and recording reminded me of how I felt when I cut my first demo at 17-years-old. It was special.”Building on a long history, these musicians crossed paths many times throughout their respective careers. Bullet For My Valentine’s first stateside jaunt would be with Still Remains as various treks together followed over the years. Meanwhile, Throw The Fight supported Bullet For My Valentine in 2013. During 2017, Moose texted Jordan and set off a chain of events that led to Kill The Lights.“I was at home thinking about how far I’ve come from the place where I was brought up,” recalls Moose. “I couldn’t let go of all the passion and hard work, so I sent Jordan a text and asked if he wanted to do something. He started sending me ideas.”“Around the same time, Moose put up a post on Facebook inquiring if anybody knew a good singer,” smiles James. “I replied that I did!”Developing a bond, James, Jordan, and Moose wrote in Grand Rapids, MI. Adding Travis to the fold, the lineup solidified. Crossing the pond, the guys tracked what would become Sinner in secret alongside producer Colin Richardson [Machine Head, Fear Factory] during three sessions in the UK. They self-funded the process, maintaining its integrity and independence. In order to introduce Kill The Lights, they independently unleashed the first single “The Faceless.” A stomping barrage of galloping riffs and fleet-fingered shredding, the track tallied half-a-million streams right out of the gate followed by “Watch You Fall” on its heels. As buzz grew, Fearless Records immediately reached out and signed them. Now, Kill The Lights burst out of the gates with the 2020 single “Shed My Skin.” Following an eerie sample and a promise “There will be no mercy, there will be no surrender” punctuated by organ, it storms forward on a gnashing groove before culminating on an arena-ready chant, pummeling percussion, and nimble soloing.“Lyrically, it’s about accepting anxiety and depression and recognizing life is very hard sometimes,” states James. “We shouldn’t be afraid to say it out loud though. People worry about portraying an image. This encourages everyone to let go of those self-imposed barriers and shed the skin. You push through it. In the lyrics, I admit, ‘I’m the same as you’. I dealt with stress at 15; I still deal with it. I’m trying to be transparent with listeners.”The transparency reaches its apex on “Plagues.” In between trudging distortion, James details his battle with cancer via confessional verses and a guttural growl on the hooks.“I had cancer ten years ago,” he sighs. “My grandmother and uncle both passed from it. ‘Plagues’ takes part in the conversation about chemotherapy, knowing someone who may be close to the end, the brokenhearted-ness you feel, but also the loss you have inside. When I was diagnosed, it put everything in perspective. The fear is constant. Coming out on the other side, my life changed. I’m married with kids. I don’t care about anything as long as I’m happy and healthy. We all need this reminder.”On the other end of the spectrum, “Tear Me Apart” hinges on acoustic strumming and a robust beat, unfolding as an emotionally charged ballad. Everything culminates on “Unmoved” where clean guitar gives way to a final thrashing exorcism. The title Sinner suggests the expanse of these sonic extremes.“On the exterior, you might look perfect, but we all deal with dark feelings,” James elaborates. “We all have issues. We’re all the same. We’re all sinners. We’ve lost so many people due to silent depression. We want to shine light on this in what we do.”In the end, honesty elevates Kill The Lights as a modern metallic force.“Being fans of metal, these songs mean a lot to us,” Moose leaves off. “We wanted to create a record of relatable music. We hope fans enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.”We want to hear from you! It's Memorial Day, but I'm still sheltering at home, so I might as well do a show! Since last week's Monday Music outing with Michael McDermott went so well, I decided to make it a thing! So it's back today with my old friend Dan Navarro! He's back with "Shed My Skin," his first solo studio album after more than 20 years and 14 albums with his former partner Eric Lowen, who died in 2012 from ALS. We'll begin the show with the latest news and information, and then bring Dan in for conversation and tunes!
Dan Navarro visits the Record Shop! Dan wrote and performed with Eric Lowen for many years, and in 1984, scored a number one hit with "We Belong" for Pat Benetar. Lowen & Navarro went on to write songs for Jackson Browne, Keb' Mo', The Bangles and many others. After Eric passed in 2012 from ALS, Dan continued to perform and write solo, recently releasing "Shed My Skin." We got an in-depth interview and an exclusive live performance from Dan while he visited the Shop and you're invited!Support the show (http://www.wildmansteve.com/MEMBERS.html)

The only answer is “Yes.” Dan Navarro’s creedo which has served him well, and, saved my ass more than once. With 24 hrs notice Dan stepped in, swung away and gave it 110%, as he always does. Opening the show with the beauty, Let it Ride, from his newly dropped solo CD, Shed My Skin, he told stories… Barry Cowsill *swoon*, Hanson, Cameron Dye, Deborah Pearl, Severin Browne, his cousin Dave, The Bangles, and, of course, his longtime collaborator, creative and performing partner, Eric Lowen who passed of complications of ALS in 2012, forever changing Dan’s life, in innumerable ways. He did a little Javier Bardem, talked Family Guy, and closed out the BROADcast with a mini-concert, two killer cuts from his new CD, not to be missed, and, his mega-hit for Pat Benatar, We Belong, currently featured in the box office smash, Deadpool 2. Nothing like Dan the creator performing his song. We laughed like hell, had a ball, but alas, no tightie whities, or whacky blackies. Next time. I'm about to release my first debut EP! But before it comes out, I thought it'll be an interesting idea to share the stories behind each song on the EP. This is the last out of the series, and goes for slightly longer. I talk about working with a mentor through the Headliners Club course over at SoundFly (soundfly.com). Through the directives from my mentor Mahea Lee, I ended up with two songs "Shed My Skin" and "Lifeboat (Tasman Sea)". Tune in to hear how I wrote these tracks, how they fit into my EP and was pivotal in joining the tracks for the EP, and how SoundFly supported me through the entire process! In the upcoming episodes, I talk about the current state of the industry and how we should approach artists who have committed crimes and their legacy (and ongoing works). And in a separate episode I will talk about my background and how I came to be 'here'. Stay tuned! Head to https://www.feiloka.com for more details. Thanks for listening.
Professor Jim Grimsley visits The Context of White Supremacy. Grimsley is a White man and an Admitted Racist. He's a Professor of Practice in the English Department at Emory University in Georgia. He's a prolific and award-winning writer. We'll deconstruct his 2015 publication, How I Shed My Skin: Understanding the Racist Lessons of a Southern Childhood. He describes his childhood in rural North Carolina during the 1960's. His White family and friends swapped nigger jokes, talked bad about black people while attending church, and incessantly emphasized the ignorance and vileness of niggras. Grimsley suspects that his father may have practiced direct acts of violence against black citizens. Ostensibly, his book examines his journey away from the White Supremacist identity that was expected of him. Mr. Grimsley insists that being a gay man helped him reject the White Supremacy culture that reared him. #BlackSelfRespect INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p
This Show: Emily Danger! With a classically trained opera singer on lead vocals and a violin virtuoso you would not expect to form a band but you haven't seen or heard Emily Danger. The bands dark cabaret style fused with synthesizers, drum beats and guitar is an unexpected delight. And just when the initial feeling of novelty wears of is when you really start to appreciate what this duo does on stage! Included in the interview are their songs "Shed My Skin" and "Remix"
Lowen and Navarro were a beloved acoustic duo with an unorthodox genesis and a premature end. Formed in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro's initial success came when they composed the song, “We Belong,” which would become a major chart hit for Pat Benatar in 1984. They started actively performing together in 1987 and grew their audience the old-fashioned way - by connecting with their audience at hundreds of shows and releasing ten albums over fifteen years before Lowen was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2004. They continued to work together until 2009, when Lowen's condition had deteriorated to the point where he needed to focus on his health. But even before his partner was forced to step away from performing, Navarro had begun to do what any person for whom music was a compulsion would do, which was to forge ahead. He wasn't without self-doubts about how he could be a viable artist on his own after such a long, fruitful and musically intimate partnership, but the fans kept coming. And so did the songs. By early 2014, Navarro's schedule is as busy as ever – touring at a national level, serving on the boards of SAG-AFTRA, Folk Alliance and others, advocating for performer's rights in Washington D.C. and preparing to release his first studio album of new material since Eric Lowen's passing in 2012. Along with the upcoming Shed My Skin album, Navarro also released an acoustic album comprised of demos called Skinless in late 2013 that serves as a confident primer on what Navarro is capable of on his own. And it's really good.
