Cogs Toys and Games, Ireland's top independent toy retailer, is today urging parents to ignite their children's passion for science and engineering this Christmas following the opening of its new pop-up shop on Dublin's Grafton Street. Specialising in products designed to boost brain development in children and maintain mental acuity in adults, Cogs Toys and Games (formerly Cogs The Brain Shop) has been a fixture in St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre in Dublin since it was set up by siblings Conor Brady and Ruth Roberts in 2013. The company marked its 10th anniversary with the opening its new pop-up premises on Grafton Street in October this year. Cogs Toys and Games stocks a wide range of family board games, brain teasers, puzzles, jigsaws, strategy, and STEM games, as well as products specifically for children with additional needs, including sensory toys for children with autism, reading games for children with dyslexia, and fidget toys for those with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Founder of Cogs Toys and Games Ruth Roberts is calling on parents to instil a burgeoning love of science and engineering in their children this Christmas with the gift of one of the company's many STEM toys and games. She says: "As an experienced primary school teacher with a master's degree in educational studies and a diploma in special education, and as a mother of two boys, I know the benefits of learning through play. "All the toys and games we sell online or in-store at our Grafton Street pop-up shop are specifically selected to aid brain development. Indeed, the effectiveness of every product we sell at stimulating the brain is measured before they go on our shelves. This has helped us create one of the best collections of STEM toys and games in Ireland. "Christmas is the perfect time to ignite a child's passion for science and engineering with the gift of one of our STEM toys and games. Visitors to our Grafton Street store will find staff on hand to demonstrate any one of these products, as well as our Irish-made and designed range, and a whole series of products specifically for children with additional needs, such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia." Some of the most popular STEM toys include Snap Circuits, a multi-award-winning range of toys from Elenco which teach children the basics of electronics. Aimed at children aged eight to 15, Snap Circuits has a lot of different kits in a range of prices which offer hands-on experience designing and building models of working electrical circuits using a collection of different components. The range includes models for building a remote-controlled car, a flying saucer, a motion detector, and arcade games. Snap Circuits Green Energy, meanwhile, helps kids understand the concept of clean energy through the construction of windmills and electric cars. Another popular choice this year is The Keva Maker Bot Maze, an engineering tool which allows children to build mazes through which their own motorised robot must pass. The game encourages children to use their creativity, imagination and resourcefulness to make tunnels, bridges, pathways and obstacles from planks and connectors. See the Keva Maker Bot Maze here A charity gift-wrapping service will be operating at the back of the Grafton Street pop-up shop in the run-up to Christmas with all proceeds going towards Hugh's House, a charity that provides family accommodation to parents of sick children in Temple Street, Holles Street, The Coombe and Rotunda Hospitals. Higher end math and computational thinking are skill sets that can provide amazing opportunities to many at a young age. The problem that persists is how do parents and educators find the right accessible tools for mastering these abilities in the K-12 environment? We have featured APH s Code Jumper in our previous convention coverage. However, that s just the start for APH s Road To Code offerings that teach students the concepts of sequencing, loops and block coding. J.J. spoke to Leslie Weilbacher, APH Regional Outreach Specialist for the Northwest Region, about some of the new programs and products that can assist in the teaching of coding fundamentals. The interview covers products like the Colby Mouse, Code Quest and Snapino s Snap Circuits and Snap Rover. Lastly, programs like the National Coding Symposium and Access Academy are discussed. Episode Notes WCB Unleashed brings you another exciting show. From Frank Cuta: One of my favorite Snap Circuits projects is the SC-12 FM radio. If you like the tech look, the resulting radio looks like something that was built in a research lab, and it is totally accessible. You can find it on Amazon for $40, and you can assemble it in as little as a half an hour with the recorded audible instructions that I can send you. For more information, write to me at frank@cuta.net. From Reginald George: I took Frank up on his challenge to build this radio, and though it took me over an hour, instead of the promised half hour, the podcast you see here is the result. It was a lot of fun. Frank's recorded instructions guide me through the steps and keep things lively as I fumble my way through. By the time it was over I felt like I had been speaking to and arguing with an imaginary friend. Any mistakes I made were strictly my own. Maybe this can inspire you or your child to delve into electronics and try something similar. No tools required! Even a child can do it, and they will probably do it much more quickly than I did. So please enjoy my unboxing and journey through this kit, and keep listening to see if I actually succeed. A big thanks as always goes out to the American council of the Blind, , our producer Zack Hurtz, and all those who provided  legal music for this podcast. You may write to us at TheWCBNewsline@Gmail.com. Summer is a time for fun, creativity, imagination, and experimentation! But caution!! Kids are looking for a break from formal studies and a chance to be curious, adventurous, and in many cases, lazy. And that’s not a bad thing!Parents often feel a need to fill their kid’s time with activities, camps, and new experiences, which can be wonderful and fun. But they can also be tiring and overwhelming when they’ve just spent the last 9 mos with their time filled from morning til night. Be cautious about filling their schedule non stop. Let them have downtime!Summer is a great opportunity to let kids explore their interests in a low key way and follow their lead to see where it goes. Offer them some ideas but let them decide what they want to pursue. Let them be bored! Boredom is the beginning of imagination!Screen time: video games can be like interactive books, look at learning possibilities of games, limit if necessary for your familyLibraries: let them choose books, don't forget audio books, check to see if they have kits to check out such as games, legos, etc.It can be overwhelming to stock up on a ton of activity kits of the summer but I have some favorite tried and true options as a place to start:(We have used all the items listed and recommend them)*Science experiment kits:-Snap Circuits are a fun electronics discovery kit and can be reused in different configurations. Many different sizes of kits. Here’s a basic set: https://amzn.to/2tnZuQW-Volcano Science kit (though you can make your own with cardboard, paper mache, plastic tube/cup, baking soda, vinegar, and red food coloring) https://amzn.to/2M7EshA-National Geographic Dig kits (gemstones, fossils, or shark teeth)https://amzn.to/2lkkTHe-Clifford the Big Red Dog Young Science kits-bubbles-https://amzn.to/2M52pFZ-Sun Print paper-use various items to make designs-leaves, cookie cutters, use pipe cleaners to shape, fun foam shapes, etc. https://amzn.to/2lPHrzY*Science Tools:-Carson MicroBrite Plus 60x-120x Power LED Lighted Pocket Microscope (MM-300)We love this one! https://amzn.to/2M1Ek31-Bug catchers (homemade or dollar store)-Binoculars-Tweezers/tongs (dollar store)-Cheap tools (dollar store)*Unique Art Supplies:-Melissa and Doug Scratch Art paper https://amzn.to/2MEUQqL-Water color crayons (color than paint with water to see it transform)https://amzn.to/2liw0jS-Wikki Stix (like pipe cleaners but waxy)https://amzn.to/2I4Atj6I’ve found the “strewing method” to be quite successful. Choose a few of the resources, kits, books, etc that you have gathered and leave them strategically around the house. Maybe a few different books are left on the bed, on the couch, on coffee tables, in the car. Leave some of the supplies in a basket or tin on the table or counter. You are basically leaving things out for the kids to discover on their own so they WANT to engage in the activity. Some things may get no interest now but will in a few weeks so don’t worry if they don’t draw any attention yet. Just put them away and try again in a week or 2.(Full disclosure: Amazon links are affiliate links which means I get a small commission if you order through the link, however, the price to you is the same regardless.
