This Dead Talk was conducted at the France retreat a couple of weeks ago. There were 17 of us all staying at a wonderful Chateau north of Paris. Christy and I let the group pick the categories and Winnifred came through. She told us that she was chosen after great debate among all of the other dead people who could have come through, because she represented all of our individual interests. She lived in the 1800's and was a politician, patron of the arts, philosopher, and a medium. It was so fun to talk to her with everyone at the retreat. Josephine Coombe talks about her career journey; how marketing has changed; work/life balance; & why it's never been a more exciting time to be in supply chain. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [07.26] Josephine's career journey; her transition from the arts to technology and supply chain; and why embracing ambiguity is a good thing. “I wouldn't say my career was planned, or at least the first half was more serendipity than planning. But, around halfway through, I started being much more deliberate about where I was going as a professional. And, particularly for young women, allowing a little bit of the unexpected can take you down paths that are very positive.” [08.49] How marketing has changed over the course of Josephine's career; why it's vital to bring creativity and analytics together; and why data isn't everything when it comes to marketing. “It's been a very interesting time to see the shifts in marketing. Back then marketing was, to some extent, more of an arts discipline… And it's changed dramatically, as digital marketing has enabled a much more analytical approach.” “We can go overboard with trying to make the data tell us everything – and it can't. I often see wild goose chases when it comes to attribution, but often what's lost in those conversations is the influencing factors… Not everything can be perfectly measured but, just because it can't, doesn't mean that it's not delivering value.” [14.33] Josephine's role as Chief Commercial Officer at Nulogy – what it involves, how she approaches the role, and the importance of bringing sales and marketing together. “The ability to get out of your silo and into another area enables you to build empathy for other business areas.” [18.37] Josephine's experience of moving from North America to Europe for her latest job role. [22.10] Nulogy's vision of collaboration and co-innovation, and the big industry challenges they're tackling with these core principles. “More and more, we're seeing a reliance on external providers to enable growth. But if you don't know what's going on out there, it's going to be difficult to achieve. It's a big supply chain issue.” [25.02] The significant momentum driving women's involvement in supply chain in the UK, and the different culture it's creating for the industry. “In the logistics industry in the UK, there's been a deliberate effort to move beyond the historical reliance and dominance of men to enable more women in leadership positions.” [27.40] Josephine's experience as a woman in supply chain, and how things have changed for women over the course of her career. [29.33] Why it's never been a more exciting time to be in supply chain, and Josephine's advice for younger generations, especially women, who may be looking to join the industry and take advantage of that excitement and momentum. “The pandemic made very clear to the world that supply chain is critical to society. And it made very clear to big businesses that they couldn't treat their supply chain organizations like an operational necessity, they had to recognize its highly strategic value to the business. So we've seen a tremendous focus and investment in supply chain.” [31.29] The turning point in Josephine's career; the influential people who played a part in her journey; and why you don't ever stop learning. [36.16] Josephine's passion for the arts; achieving her diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music; and the importance of embracing creativity as part of work/life balance. “For me, creative endeavors are part of work/life balance. It's so important to make sure you've got that type of time to unwind and give your brain something fresh to think about.” [38.41] The future for Josephine. Joining Jill and Doron on the 26th episode of the podcast, to tell us his story is British businessman Peter Rhodes. Peter was raised in Kensington where he attended St. David's prep school before arriving at Carmel, sight unseen. After ‘A‘ levels, he had a diverse career in retail, advertising and exhibitions, during which he worked at the Jewish Chronicle, M&S and the New Musical Express. In 2007, the Queen awarded him an OBE for services to British business interests in France based on his thirty years at the helm of Reed Midem, organising international fairs - mostly in Cannes - for the music, TV and property industries. Now retired, Peter is an active BAFTA member and sells sculptures and ceramics created by Sue, his wife of 47 years, with whom he has a daughter. Hear Peter talk about in what unexpected way Carmel bested Oxford, Mr Healey's distinctive French accent, racing from Reading to Mongewell Park in Mr. Coombe's Austin Healey, King Lear in the amphitheater, and his time in ‘The Mad Hatters'. Thank you, Peter Rhodes, for turning us again to Carmel days! In his memoir he introduces us to a host of brilliant characters, ranging from childhood friends and relations in East Clare to those who would become central to The Gloaming. One figure we meet is Tommie Potts, a Dublin firefighter from the Coombe and a fiddle player. The Liffey Banks remains a beloved record. Cogs Toys and Games, Ireland's top independent toy retailer, is today urging parents to ignite their children's passion for science and engineering this Christmas following the opening of its new pop-up shop on Dublin's Grafton Street. Specialising in products designed to boost brain development in children and maintain mental acuity in adults, Cogs Toys and Games (formerly Cogs The Brain Shop) has been a fixture in St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre in Dublin since it was set up by siblings Conor Brady and Ruth Roberts in 2013. The company marked its 10th anniversary with the opening its new pop-up premises on Grafton Street in October this year. Cogs Toys and Games stocks a wide range of family board games, brain teasers, puzzles, jigsaws, strategy, and STEM games, as well as products specifically for children with additional needs, including sensory toys for children with autism, reading games for children with dyslexia, and fidget toys for those with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Founder of Cogs Toys and Games Ruth Roberts is calling on parents to instil a burgeoning love of science and engineering in their children this Christmas with the gift of one of the company's many STEM toys and games. She says: "As an experienced primary school teacher with a master's degree in educational studies and a diploma in special education, and as a mother of two boys, I know the benefits of learning through play. "All the toys and games we sell online or in-store at our Grafton Street pop-up shop are specifically selected to aid brain development. Indeed, the effectiveness of every product we sell at stimulating the brain is measured before they go on our shelves. This has helped us create one of the best collections of STEM toys and games in Ireland. "Christmas is the perfect time to ignite a child's passion for science and engineering with the gift of one of our STEM toys and games. Visitors to our Grafton Street store will find staff on hand to demonstrate any one of these products, as well as our Irish-made and designed range, and a whole series of products specifically for children with additional needs, such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia." Some of the most popular STEM toys include Snap Circuits, a multi-award-winning range of toys from Elenco which teach children the basics of electronics. Aimed at children aged eight to 15, Snap Circuits has a lot of different kits in a range of prices which offer hands-on experience designing and building models of working electrical circuits using a collection of different components. The range includes models for building a remote-controlled car, a flying saucer, a motion detector, and arcade games. Snap Circuits Green Energy, meanwhile, helps kids understand the concept of clean energy through the construction of windmills and electric cars. Another popular choice this year is The Keva Maker Bot Maze, an engineering tool which allows children to build mazes through which their own motorised robot must pass. The game encourages children to use their creativity, imagination and resourcefulness to make tunnels, bridges, pathways and obstacles from planks and connectors. See the Keva Maker Bot Maze here A charity gift-wrapping service will be operating at the back of the Grafton Street pop-up shop in the run-up to Christmas with all proceeds going towards Hugh's House, a charity that provides family accommodation to parents of sick children in Temple Street, Holles Street, The Coombe and Rotunda Hospitals. Let's face it, there is a patchy record for solo artists that began in popular 90s bands. Some crossed the rubicon to a credible solo career and some didn't. While Gaz Coombes enjoyed the full glare of the spotlight of the second half of the 90s with Supergrass, his solo work has surpassed those years in many ways. 2018's World's Strongest Man felt like a step forward in this third phase of Coombe's music career (he has been making music in commercial bands since the age of 15, so let's call Supergrass his second phase).Gaz hasn't felt the need to rush things. Since Supergrass split in 2010 (they came together for a resplendent but brief reunion live tour in 2022) he has released four solo albums, each one a steady progression on the one before. But none of his solo work sounds like the band that first made him a famous face and voice. What's been cool about doing these last few solo records is building up this entirely new fan base, not just expecting people to have come over from Supergrass”.The path to a viable, successful solo career is a pretty precarious one, but it feels like Gaz has found his way on that path. His new album Turn The Car Around continues in the same vein as World's Strongest Man, showcasing the variety of tricks Coombe's has in the bag, from classic melancholic songs to nagging grooves and dirty guitar sounds. From this point onwards, he's pushing himself further. “I've called this album the last one of a trilogy, just to force myself to look at my career in a different way from now on. I've known where I wanted to take it before but this time I'm not sure. I want to do something different, so it'll be jazz metal”. In this episode, Coach Coombe discusses: · What it was like becoming the head coach of Angel City FC when the team hadn't signed any players nor played any games and how she approached the opportunity to build a team from scratch; · What went into selecting the team's first roster of players; · The culture that is being built and how the players signed have shaped it Coach Coombe then discusses what needs to be done to grow meaningful opportunities for women's soccer and its players. She discusses how the start-up mindset that Angel City FC has used to scale its club is a model other teams should look at when it comes to advancing the growth of women's sport. Coach Coombe then explains how she got into investing and the setbacks she faced in preparing for retirement as she moved from the U.K. to U.S. to advance her coaching career. She highlights the hurdles she's seen that hold women's sport athletes back from investing and why she's partnering with TIAA to close the retirement pay gap. Finally, Coach Coombe tells us what she's up to these days and gives a good explanation for how coaches can productively use the offseason to prepare for the next season. This is a great episode for anyone desiring to build and strengthen a team's or corporation's culture. It also has great insights for growing women's sports. In their first year as an NWSL expansion team, and despite finishing eighth in the standings, Angel City FC had one of the best defensive records in the division, bettered only by the top three. It is something the new Los Angeles team prides themselves on, says head coach Freya Coombe. And it is no coincidence that they have achieved it with Coombe in charge.Indeed, in the 2021 season, when she was at the helm of NJ/NY Gotham FC (formerly Sky Blue FC), they boasted the second-best defensive performance in the league. It is, Coombe admits, something that runs at the heart of her coaching practice.“Looking at how we protect the goal is the number one principle that we have,” she tells Women's Soccer Coaching.

Stel Coombe-Heath sat in her home a few years ago, surrounded by the evidence of fast food and donuts she'd eaten, and realized it was her time to ask for help. She'd long taken her fitness and weight to punishing levels, depriving herself for period of time, followed by bingeing. Then shame. Discomfort. And pushing herself to exercise more and eat less. It was time for a change. You will learn: *It's possible to retrain and rewire the brain.*There is support for individuals with eating disorders, but it can be harder to find if the sufferer doesn't exhibit extreme symptoms.*Using the scale to measure success for binge eaters may not be productive. For show notes, click HERE.Writers! Trigger warning : Multiple rounds of IVF, miscarriage.Denise Phillips lives in Newbridge, Co. Kildare with her husband Mark, their 6 year old daughter Beth and she's also step mother to 16 year old Ellie. She's hugely successful in her career as the owner of Pelo hairdressing and the co-owner of Irish hair brand Voduz and last week she got the surprise of her life when she found out she was over 6 months pregnant! For the past 10 years, she had lived with unexplained infertility, no periods, no ovulation and the lining of her womb was very thin.On their 9th cycle of IVF she went on to have their little girl and when Beth was a baby, she also took part in TV documentary ‘The Babymakers', which followed the lives of couples for over a year, who were trying to conceive and showed the reality of IVF.This was one of my favourite chats ever on the podcast, it's full of wisdom and practical advice, especially for those who are navigating the often-challenging road to parenthood. She speaks about acceptance and gratitude and the importance of staying in your own lane. And when we spoke on Tuesday when she had just come from all her pregnancy appointments in the Coombe hospital, where she found out she was almost 29 weeks pregnant!Book mentions:Deepak Chopra's The Seven Spiritual Laws of SuccessVishen Lakhiani's The Code of the Extraordinary MindIf you enjoyed this chat please show your support by leaving a rating or a little comment on Apple and by clicking follow on Spotify, I'd be so thankful.
