Shoulder pain is a common ailment, particularly among the elderly. Conditions such as rotator cuff tendinitis or rupture, subacromial impingement, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), and acromioclavicular joint osteoarthritis are prevalent and can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. To address this issue, two remarkable high school girls from Ireland, representing Rehabilation Nation, will showcase their groundbreaking device for shoulder and arm rehabilitation at this year's Maker Faire Rome - The European Edition. Shoulder Rehabilitation, an Innovative Device by Rehabilation Nation The project, aptly named "Shoulder Pulley Exerciser," offers an innovative solution for those suffering from soft tissue lesions in the shoulder. By strengthening and improving a range of motions in the shoulder, this device aims to provide effective rehabilitation while offering valuable feedback to both users and their physiotherapists. The shoulder, a marvel of biological engineering, is not merely a simple 'ball and socket' joint but rather a complex structure composed of four articulations, supported by an intricate arrangement of bones, muscles, and ligaments within and outside the joint capsule. Its ability to withstand heavy physical demands over an extensive range of motion makes it susceptible to various articular and peri-articular pathologies. Traditionally, treatment for adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) involved range-of-motion exercises, corticosteroids, and numbing medications injected into the joint capsule. In some cases, arthroscopic surgery was necessary to alleviate the condition. However, the Shoulder Pulley Exerciser by Rehabilation Nation provides a non-invasive alternative that eliminates the need for surgery. The design and construction of this innovative device enable sufferers to engage in a range of shoulder exercises, including rotation, abduction, and flexion, all from the comfort of their own homes. The device features a sturdy rope that can be easily and securely fastened to any standard door using the provided attachment. Users can adjust the rope's length to their requirements by simply knotting it accordingly. Additionally, two easy-grip non-slip foam handles ensure that the device is not only easy to use but also comfortable. One of the notable features of this device is the integration of a microswitch into the cam mechanism. This microswitch detects each 360-degree rotation, triggering the input of a BBC Micro bit. The Microbit, programmed with six subroutines developed under the guidance of physiotherapists, facilitates increased movement and reduced pain. By modifying the pulley system and incorporating the microswitch, the Shoulder Pulley Exerciser provides real-time feedback to users and their physiotherapists, both visually and audibly. The Rehabilation Nation shoulder exerciser offers an invaluable tool for the rehabilitation process. It allows users to perform internal and external rotation exercises, effectively aiding in the recovery and strengthening of the shoulder joint. By empowering individuals to take charge of their own rehabilitation, this device promotes independence and convenience, ensuring that users can exercise at their own pace without compromising on the quality of their treatment. Rehabilation Nation's contribution to the field of shoulder rehabilitation is truly remarkable. These two young innovators from Desmond College in Limerick, Ireland, have combined their passion for technology and healthcare to create a device that has the potential to improve the lives of numerous individuals suffering from shoulder pain. To learn more about the Shoulder Pulley Exerciser and the incredible work of Rehabilation Nation, visit their website at rehabilation-nation.ie. You can also follow their journey on Twitter at @rehabnation2023. Let us applaud these young inventors and support their endeavors in the field of shoulder rehabilitation. Can the internet ever be safe for children? What is the impact of digital exclusion on the UK economy? Why is our digital life usually demanding more and more from us?   In this week's 5 Big Questions interview we talk to digital inclusion and online safeguarding expert AMY O'DONNELL.   Known for: Senior Programme Manager (Social Impact) - Nominet Project Leader - Digital Youth Index Co-district Commissioner (Oxford) - Girlguiding Former Digital Programme Manager - Oxfam The Big 5 Questions: How do you measure the impact of what you do? How should people/businesses be preparing for the future? How do we build the workforce we need for that future? How do you use creativity to solve problems? How do you collaborate? Key quotes: "We can't underestimate the learning that we need to do as a sector around power, around bias.” “The only thing that we can do is have a quest for knowledge. Setting out with a mindset not to put ‘impact' on this big pedestal, but rather the slower, more agile, pieces of the puzzle.” “Over half of young people are teaching themselves digital skills.” “We have to go beyond the idea of counting numbers, really think about feedback, qualitative insight into our learning, helping us see the world through a different lens, from a different perspective.” “Organisations will only ever be as relevant as their ability to relate to individuals in their audiences. Putting people first, in human-centred design processes and in true processes of diversity.” “The attention that digital platforms are demanding of us daily is having a huge impact on our mental health and the mental health of young people.” “We know that 870,000 technology and digital jobs are open at the moment in the UK economy. This is presenting a huge risk to the digital economy because there are jobs not being done, but also wouldn't it be cool if we made a strategy that made for a really diverse workforce, which allowed us to plug that gap with people with a diverse range of lived experience that could create those solutions for the future.”   Useful links: // Amy O'Donnell (LinkedIn) // https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-o-donnell-17751518/?originalSubdomain=uk // Twitter // @amy_odonnell // Nominet UK // https://www.nominet.uk/ // Girl Guiding UK // https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/ // Online Safety Bill UK // https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3137   Online Safety Bill government fact sheet https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/online-safety-bill-supporting-documents/online-safety-bill-factsheet // Tony's Chocolonely social impact reports // https://tonyschocolonely.com/us/en/annual-fair-reports/ // Good Things Foundation https://www.goodthingsfoundation.org/ // Nominet and Barnardos ‘Project Backpack // https://www.nominet.uk/barnardos-to-help-professionals-keep-children-safe-online-in-new-programme-funded-by-nominet/ // Nominet's Digital Youth Index // https://digitalyouthindex.uk/ // The Scouts' Digital Citizenship Badge // https://www.scouts.org.uk/staged-badges/digital-citizen/ // Microbit // https://microbit.org/   This episode was recorded in July 2022 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts

I am talking to Bambi Brewer about the new Finch Robot 2.0. Bambi is the director of Engineering at Birdbrain Technologies, the creators of the Finch Robot. Bambi works from the beginning to the end of the development process to design new products, ensure software is reliable and easy to use, and create curriculum pathways to help take robotics projects to the next level. She has a bachelor in math and physics from Rhodes College, and a Ph.D. in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. She has experience in education at all levels and has been designing robotics curricula since 2013. In her free time, she raises a teenager and knits obsessively.Let’s have a look at the Finch Robot v2, BirdBrain’s latest creation. It’s of course the successor of the popular first Finch Robot and a big shift is the use of the BBC micro:bit as a computational brain of this robot. The finch is a robot that targets kids from Kindergarten to college and allows them to experience their coding creations in a hands-on, physical way. The micro:bit already features quite a few sensors, such as the accelerometer or buttons. But Finch 2.0 adds even more cool stuff: a whiteboard marker holder, color LEDs, buzzer, light sensor, distance sensor and even line tracking sensor. It’s powered by a rechargeable battery that lasts 7+ hours. And little details make it special for me - things as visual markers on the wheels so you can count the iterations easily. That’s the geeky hardware bit - the software looks even more exciting with block-based programming in all forms and apps as well as text-based coding supported. We go into details in the interview.

This episode features an interview with Bernat Romagosa about MicroBlocks, which can be used to program common educational boards such as the BBC micro:bit, Calliope Mini or the Adafruit Circuit Playground Express. So what is MicroBlocks all about? MicroBlocks is a new programming language inspired by Scratch, that runs right inside microcontroller boards such as the BBC micro:bit, the Calliope Mini or Adafruit’s Circuit Playground Express. After installing the MicroBlocks editor and flashing the MicroBlocks firmware once, you can quickly upload new code or change existing programs - it’s just takes a second. Of course, the usual suspects for visual coding blocks are available, such as various logic blocks, loops, blocks for controlling the input and output of the micro:bit such as the input pins and LEDs or various math blocks.

In this episode, I am talking to Lorraine Underwood about her book Save the World with Code. It’s a book filled with great projects for the Raspberry PI, Adafruit Circuit Playground and the BBC micro:bit. Lorraine is originally from Ireland and now lives in the UK with her husband and two young boys. She is a trained secondary school teacher in Information Communication Technology and currently works at Lancaster University as a Senior Teaching Associate, teaching Applied and Creative Computing to undergraduate students. Her book - Save the World with Code - that just recently got published in May 2020, includes 20 fun projects for the Raspberry Pi, the Adafruit Circuit Playground Express and the BBC micro:bit. She’s really chosen the top educational boards out there with the biggest communities - that’s a guarantee for a lot of fun and if needed excellent support, too. And the really cool thing is that very often you can choose which tool to use for the particular project - so for most of the 20 projects, you get to choose which computing board you want to use!

In this episode, I am talking to Dr. Andrew Robinson about the CodeBug - a cute, programmable, light-up wearable for everyone.Andrew is the project leader for CodeBug a director of an engineering consultancy and part time lecturer in Manchester, where previously he completed his PhD in low power embedded processors. Andrew is passionate about education and engineering and can trace his enthusiasm for electronics and computers back to building a working model lighthouse aged 5. His work was also used as the prototype of the BBC micro:bit that defined a new class of device.

KidsLab - a podcast for parents and educators passionate about STEAM education

We're talking to Jonathan Austin, CTO of the micro:bit foundation about coding the BBC micro:bit via the text-based python programming language. When it comes to programming the micro:bit, the Python Editor allows you to use the Python programming language - which is text-based and non-visual in comparison to the MakeCode editor. To be exact, you can use MicroPython on the micro:bit. MicroPython is a lean and efficient implementation of the Python 3 programming language that includes a small subset of the Python standard library and is optimised to run on microcontrollers and in constrained environments.

KidsLab - a podcast for parents and educators passionate about STEAM education

We’re talking to Giles Booth about the BBC micro:bit. Giles is the Educational Content Manager at the BBC Microbit Foundation, and also used to teach Computer Science and ICT in primary and secondary schools in London. The BBC micro:bit is a device about half the size of a credit card, plugs into a computer via a micro usb cable and then can easily be programmed via some web-based editors. In the end you download the compiled program with the click of a button in one of the editors and drag it over to the micro:bit like you would drop a file onto an USB stick. It’s super simple. If there is a single educational computer science-related tool that you want to buy, that one is the BBC micro:bit. The BBC micro:bit is a really revolutionary educational tool!https://kidslab.dev/2020/02/10/the-bbc-microbit-with-giles-booth/
