Jason Jacobs wants it all. As a father to young children, he wants to be active in their lives, but as an ambitious founder, he's compelled to build and chase down opportunities that often require sacrificing the time with his family that he longs for. This is not a new tension for a repeat founder, but the current moment has presented Jason with an opportunity to reflect and explore whether the new tools and timing available today may make this next time... different. I first met Jason when we funded his startup, Runkeeper, the first fitness tracking app for the iPhone. It was a fascinating ride for the both of us as Jason piloted a rocket ship whose engine stalled as he pushed to tell a story that made investors swoon and customers scratch their heads. Runkeeper ended as a success via its acquisition by ASICS in 2016 and started a new chapter for Jason as a successfully exited founder. After a false start raising money for his first idea post-Runkeeper, Jason began to develop a process for discovering what comes next for him in his pursuit of entrepreneurial purpose and impact. He applied this process first in climate, ultimately founding the venture capital firm, MCJ. Recently, he's begun the process again with The Next Next which he describes as:My hope with this expedition is I can unpack what we as humans need out of work in this next era, what is possible with emerging tools, and how they can be applied most effectively to building startups. I am hoping it will lead to my next venture (iteratively, using this newsletter as an important feedback tool), and that if I find success with this new playbook, it can be a template for a new way of company building that many others will follow.Some takeaways from this conversation:- Chasing trends or investor expectations at the expense of your core mission can derail even a promising startup. Jason candidly admits that Runkeeper lost its way when it tried to expand beyond its core running focus into the broader “Health Graph” vision. This pivot, driven by the allure of venture capital and external validation, created internal friction and diluted the company's identity.- Realigning your business with its foundational strengths when navigating challenges. Jacobs' decision to refocus Runkeeper on its original running mission marked a turning point for the company. By cutting unnecessary initiatives, streamlining operations, and regaining profitability, the team was able to position itself for acquisition by ASICS.- The importance of “staying true to your weirdness” and building in a way that aligns with your values and strengths. Whether it's rejecting the grind culture of traditional startups or refusing to compromise on family priorities, his journey highlights that success doesn't have to come at the cost of personal fulfillment. For Jacobs, autonomy is not just a preference—it's essential for achieving greatness.- Learning in public as a superpower. After Runkeeper, Jacobs embraced the power of learning in public by sharing his explorations into climate tech and, later, AI through newsletters, podcasts, and social media. This approach not only helped him build credibility in new fields, but also attracted like-minded collaborators who became part of his growing tribe.- Jason is now on a mission to prove that it's possible to build impactful companies without sacrificing family, health, or balance. Leveraging AI tools to reduce operational overhead, he aims to build differently while maintaining control over his time and energy.I have an expansive relationship with Jason, and I think that comes through in the video. We cover much of the struggles he had with investors, managing his psychology as a founder, and his process of discovery that he has unquestionable conviction in. My hope is that people will see some of themselves at various stages in Jason's journey and find inspiration in both his mission and his process. I hope you enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed recording it.

Lard Breebaart is bakker bij Kometen brood. Zijn naam kwam al voorbij in aflevering 33 met Olaf Wit. Lard is in 2021 (tijdens de lockdown) geswitcht van ontwerper werkzaam in marketing en produktontwikkeling naar het bakken van zuurdesembrood. Voor Lard is (goed) design het op de juiste manier combineren van dat wat in de onderbuik en in de bovenkamer gebeurt. De onderbuik is dan het irrationele en creatieve. De bovenkamer voor wat je kan analyseren en vastleggen. Die twee hebben elkaar hard nodig zowel bij design als bij het bakken van brood. Je wordt geen goede bakker (of ontwerper) als je het recept niet volgt, maar ook niet als je er niet dat gevoel en liefde in stopt. We praten over de bakkerswereld, en dan specifiek die van zuurdesembrood, en hoe die wereld aankijkt tegen de binnenkomst van mensen uit andere disciplines. Andersom: mocht je iemand kennen die van bakker geswitcht is naar ontwerper, dan horen we het graag op understandingdesign-io@tudelft.nl. Als ontwerper sloeg Lard aan op de vergelijking BROOD = WATER + BLOEM + ENERGIE. Die ENERGIE zit in de oven, de kneedmachine, de bacteriën. In die simpele vergelijkingen zitten nog honderden variabelen die alles anders kunnen maken. Als ontwerpers kan Lard een goed brood op verschillende manieren maken, net als bij ontwerpen. We praten verder ook nog over de voor- en nadelen die te maken hebben met schaalvergroting bij zelf thuis bakken, een kleine bakker of een brood uit de fabriek. De tip van Lard is om naast die bovenkamer, die je kan trainen met boeken en colleges, om ook de onderbuik los te krijgen en naar te luisteren. Daarvoor heb je ruimte nodig. Ruimte als fysieke ruimte, maar ook ruimte in tijd. Heel concreet werkt het voor Lard om te gaan rennen, zonder apps als Strava or Runkeeper of fitnesscrackers, maar vooral om de omgeving op je af te laten komen. Geef jezelf de ruimte om te voelen wat interessant voor je is. Voor jou kan het ook iets zijn als op de racefiets stappen, een lang gesprek te hebben, brood bakken (of heel lang en rustig koken). Voor Lard was de Corona tijd typisch een moment waarin ruimte gegeven werd aan andere ideeën. In de bakkerij probeert Lard ook de bezoekers de ruimte en tijd te geven om te zien hoe het brood gemaakt wordt. Niet zozeer om de wat hogere prijs te rechtvaardigen, maar om een soort bewustzijn te geven dat er heel veel charme zit in het maakproces, vergelijkbaar met hoe Christien Meindertsma in aflevering 18 sprak over dat een simpel, wit plastic zakje ook met liefde is gemaakt.

The disadvantage could be the continued separation from actual people, data harvesting by low lifers and the app not exactly meeting your needs.   I would say that it is important you develop your skills as an informed health consumer.   One way to do that is to visit the website One Mind Psyber Guide.    In this episode, a lot as some of the apps that are available for mindfulness and meditation. In late 2020, MCJ announced MCJ Collective, an early-stage climate tech fund investing in over 40 startups worldwide, tackling some of the most challenging climate problems. This week we flipped the script and put me (Jason) in the guest seat. Hilary Normanha was first featured on episode #121 of this podcast. With a background in psychology, Hilary began her career over a decade ago as a professional translator and language instructor. A couple of years later, she joined a small tech company called Eezy as Product Localization Manager, and built the company's localization program from the ground up. In 2019, Hilary joined ASICS Digital, where she now manages the localization program for the company's fitness apps. Guest Overview Simon Wheatcroft is living proof that resilience is born from adversity, accepting that things will go wrong, not go to plan, and being prepared to embrace failure without fear. Having lost his sight at an early age Simon used running solo as his foundation to building an abundant life as a runner, motivational speaker, and now teacher. In part one Simon discusses the impact of growing up in the 80's, in a small coal-mining town in the North of England, and the devastating social and economic impact of the coal mine closures Simon recounts the experience of growing up suffering from a degenerative eye disorder that ultimately resulted in his loss of sight by his late teens. Simon discusses how this impacted his ambitions, his education but how the degeneration of his site did help him develop spatial, memory, and mental acuity skills that prepared him to confront the challenges of living without sight.Having lived many years in a state of denial, Simon explains the pivotal point in his life when he accepted his condition and embraced running as a means of creating a new pathway in the world. We discuss the many challenges he faced in those early days, the value of the voice direction of the Runkeeper app, and his ability to sense what was underfoot. He discusses the daily challenge and stress of running solo without site, confronting the fear of not seeing oncoming obstacles or cars. We then cover his boundary-pushing attitude, that led him to the US and running 200 miles from Boston to New York to line up for his first New York marathon. Michael, already having completed his run before our early morning recording session, gives us a little bit of his history with running before sharing his coming out story. Thankfully, his coming out story is a supportive one, and among the first people who he came out to were his college cross country teammates.After one of the eponymous "two clueless straight dudes" asks Michael to, he defines two key terms ("LGBTQ+" and "cisgender") for our hosts and listeners before educating us on how our run crews, clubs, and teams can be more LGBTQ+ friendly (use your words thoughtfully and display those rainbows proudly, allies, and back that up with your actions!). Tony then asks Michael to give races a grade on how they're doing on LGBTQ+ inclusion, and Michael gives us a grade that shows there's room for improvement. And the hosts and Michael all agree that while portalets are egalitarian in their terribleness, registration with only binary gender options should rapidly become a relic of the past.Coming at it from the viewpoint of someone whose workplace is the endurance sports events industry, Michael encourages us all to embrace sharing our pronouns even if we conform to traditional gender norms, to normalize and make it easier for those who may not. And as a sometimes road warrior, he encourages us to think about how we house folks when we bring in folks from away to work our events.We then transition to talking about track and field's (or as Eli pretentiously calls it, "athletics") spotty history (and present) of policing sexuality and gender, especially as relates to transgender athletes. Tony mentions that he considered taking a road trip to run Vacation Races's Zion at Night event. (Note: Eli may be mistaken that OYO times will be accepted as qualifiers for New York--but he swears he saw that somewhere. Our guest today is Jason Jacobs, host of the podcast, My Climate Journey. Jason led a long career as the (former) Co-Founder and CEO of the popular fitness app, Runkeeper (acquired by ASICS). Like many of us, Jason always had a strong conviction to care for the environment and after his app was sold, he decided he wanted to do more, but didn’t know how. Rocky Harris debrief topics: Rocky has met with several constituent groups in his first 90 days, which do you think presented the greatest opportunity based on what you heard? Rocky mentioned several new ideas.  In your opinion, which have the most promise? What impressed you the most? My feeling is that triathlon is in the hands of someone that knows how to make an honest assessment of opportunities and has some really exciting ideas.  Ideas that I liked was the standardized "one stop shopping" for races, a Yelp-like rating platform. Khem's topics: Premier  Bills topics: Spin class promo Rich's topics: Indoor training; finding your most efficient cadence; and the quest for your peak power output https://www.active.com/cycling/articles/why-fast-pedaling-makes-cyclists-more-efficient  To determine the actual effects of slow and fast pedaling on leg-muscle cells, scientists at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Wyoming asked eight experienced cyclists to cycle at an intensity of 85 percent V02max for 30 minutes under two different conditions. In one case the cyclists pedaled their bikes at 50 revolutions per minute (rpm) while using a high gear. In the second case, the athletes pedaled in a low gear at 100 rpm. The athletes were traveling at identical speeds in the two instances, so their leg-muscle contractions were quite forceful at 50 rpm and moderate—but more frequent—at 100 rpm. As it turned out, the athletes' oxygen consumption rates were nearly identical in the two cases, and heart and breathing rates, total rate of power production, and blood lactate levels were also similar. However, athletes broke down the carbohydrate in their muscles at a greater rate when the 50 rpm strategy was used, while the 100 rpm cadence produced a greater reliance on fat. The greater glycogen depletion at 50 rpm occurred only in fast-twitch muscle cells. Slow-twitch muscle cells lost comparable amounts of their glycogen at 50 and 100 rpm, but fast-twitch cells lost almost 50 percent of their glycogen at 50 rpm and only 33 percent at 100 rpm, even though the exercise bouts lasted for 30 minutes in each case. This rapid loss of carbohydrate in the fast-twitch cells during slow, high-force pedaling probably explains why slow pedaling is less efficient than faster cadences of 80 to 85 rpm. Basically, as the fast fibers quickly deplete their glycogen during slow, high-strength pedaling, their contractions become less forceful, so more muscle cells must be activated to maintain a particular speed. This activation of a larger number of muscle cells then leads to higher oxygen consumption rates and reduced economy. This scenario, in which slow pedaling pulls the glycogen out of fast-twitch muscle cells, may sound paradoxical but it isn't; after all, slow pedaling rates are linked with high gears and elevated muscle forces, while fast cadences are associated with low gears and easy muscle contractions. Since fast-twitch fibers are more powerful than slow-twitch cells, the fast-twitch fibers swing into action at slow cadences, when high muscular forces are needed to move the bicycle along rapidly. On the other hand, "fast" pedaling rates of 80 to 100 rpm are not too hot for the slow-twitch cells to handle. Slow-twitch cells can contract 80 to 100 times per minute and can easily cope with the forces required to pedal in low gear. Another possible paradox in the Wisconsin/Wyoming research was that fast pedaling led to greater fat oxidation, even though maximal fat burning is usually linked with slow-paced efforts. Basically, the higher fat degradation at 100 rpm occurred because the slow-twitch cells handled the fast-paced, low-force contractions. Slow-twitch fibers are much better fat-burners than their fast-twitch neighbors. Fortunately, there's a bottom line to all this: During training and competition, cyclists should attempt to use fast pedaling rates of 80 to 85 rpm, both on the flat and on inclines. Compared to slower cadences, the higher pedaling speeds are more economical and burn more fat during exercise. Ultimately, the high pedaling rates also preserve greater amounts of glycogen in fast-twitch muscle fibers, leading to more explosive "kicks" to the finish line in closing moments of races. WU - 500 easy - very easy.  The focus is on balance and to swim with very soft hands and arms.  Focus on having your face neutral in the water and pressing your chest into the water.  Try the one arm and two arm "superman" position where you are kicking lightly and having your body floating at the surface.  When recovering your arm, make sure you are starting with your thumb on your hip or the outside of your leg.  Begin the recovery with your should keeping your elbow high, forearm and hands hanging straight down and then drop your hand into the water quietly just above your head - again hand and fingers soft.  Feel how your balance and float changes - you should stay high and balanced.
