9 years after the debut of his remarkable docuseries “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst”, which included a stunning confession by Durst on a hot mic, acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Jarecki (“Capturing the Friedmans”) is still at it. In April 2024, HBO released the first of his new six-episode series, “The Jinx - Part Two”, an investigation every bit as chilling and riveting as Part One... and maybe even more disturbing. Joining Ken on the pod to talk about his epic saga of the New York real estate tycoon turned murderer, Andrew explores the backstory of Durst's now famous five-word confession (“Killed them all, of course”) and takes us through the Los Angeles trial that found Durst once again trying to beat a murder charge. Along with a fascinating cast of characters, Part Two explores the dark theme of complicity by Durst's family and friends who, time and time again, chose money and loyalty over doing the right thing. One might say about Andrew's quest, “Exposed them all, of course”. “The Jinx - Part Two” is nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series Hidden Gems: “Darwin's Nightmare” “Screwball” Follow: @andrew.jarecki on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter/X The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.
Recently went on William Ramsey Investigates to discuss Andrew Jarecki's documentaries "Capturing the Friedmans" and "The Jinx". At times the discussion goes off into some conspiratorial directions! However, there is some good information about Jarecki, his father's ties to Epstein. It may explain why he decided to begin his career as a documentarian, making an apologist flick for a pedophile and his son that abused 17 children (according to Jesse Friedman) in Great Neck, NY in the 1980's. What similarities are there between how documentary film participants and reality television cast members are treated by production companies and the public? How can we create these forms of media ethically and in a way that protects the dignity and humanity of those involved? Today on Eyes Wide Open, we are speaking with producer and documentary participant Margie Ratliff to try to answer these questions. Margie first appeared in the public eye as a young person featured in the documentary “The Staircase,” and as a result experienced a lot of trauma from having her and her family's entire life put on screen for others to see and judge. What's wonderful about Margie is she turned her experience and her love of filmmaking into becoming an activist for ethical filmmaking in the documentary space. She has recently produced an award-winning film-festival-darling documentary called “Subject,” which follows key participants in “The Staircase,” “Hoop Dreams,” “The Wolfpack,” “Capturing the Friedmans,” and “The Square” to explore how production and public reception affected them. When I connected with Margie, I was surprised to learn about the parallels documentary production has with reality TV in terms of exploitation. What's unique about “Subject” is the producers worked collaboratively with the participants in order to make sure people were taken care of before, during, and after filming (which is atypical of this industry). Margie and I have a lot in common in terms of how we are solving similar problems in different forms of media, and I wanted to explore that together in this episode. I hope you enjoy this podcast. If you haven't already, go watch Subject. I hope that watching “Subject” and listening to this podcast helps you view documentary film, reality TV, and entertainment generally with your eyes wide open. Families have more freedom in education than ever before, thanks in part to increased parental demand for K12 opportunities since the pandemic. In state after state, legislation has passed to expand educational options. While there has been significant momentum, the groundwork for reform was laid long ago, starting with the vision of Milton and Rose Friedman. The Friedmans broke the mold of the traditional school model by proposing the concept of school choice in 1955. Nearly 70 years later, their revolutionary idea has become embedded in the education landscape, with more than half of the U.S. now having some form of educational choice. Robert Enlow is our guest on this episode of Voices of Freedom. Since 1996, he has been dedicated to carrying out the Friedmans' core belief that more education freedom creates greater opportunity for children. Topics Discussed Evolution of education freedom, starting with the Friedmans' vision Impact of school choice on underperforming schools Influence of parents on education freedom Legislative landscape of choice: opportunities and obstacles How to effectively implement education freedom legislation once it's passed U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Espinoza v. Montana How the Friedmans would view the state of education today Enlow is the president and CEO of EdChoice. Before its formation in 2016, he was an integral part of the Milton and Rose Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, serving as fundraiser, projects coordinator, vice president and executive director, prior to being named president and CEO in 2009.

In episode #107 your favorite CEOs Taylor Graham and Chloe Willemsen are sitting down with an entrepreneurial force to be wreckened with... Nancy Jarecki Nancy has always played by her own rules. She's the innovator behind the multiple award- winning company bettybeauty, inc., was born in Kansas, studied art in Texas, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an artist. Recognized as one of the up and coming Southern California artists by LA Weekly, Nancy showcased her art at numerous shows and in corporate art collections. As Nancy continued on her entrepreneurial path in Los Angeles, she was tapped in early 1986 by the creators of a startup cable network to help develop and launch a cable network called Movietime. The following year she was an instrumental part of the launch team for the network now known as E! Entertainment Television. During this time, Nancy met her husband, Andrew Jarecki, who was visiting Los Angeles to launch his company, MovieFone. She soon moved to New York to join him, helping him develop the business, and starting their new family. In 1999, the Jareckis sold MovieFone to AOL Time Warner started a movie production company as well as moved their family to Rome, Italy, where they were completing work on the Oscar-nominated film Capturing the Friedmans documentary. While in Rome, where they lived for two years, Nancy had an experience that gave her the idea to start her own innovative beauty products company, bettybeauty, inc. Visiting a hair salon, she noticed women leaving with small “take home” bags. When she inquired as to what they were, the receptionist told her they were a bit of extra hair color for “the hair down there – to make it match!” Realizing that women across America would love a commercially-available product to color this important area, Nancy began developing the first safe color for the hair down there to fulfill this unmet need in the beauty market. Now know as the popular and award winning specialty hair color kits. Nancy's creation of these innovative products won her multiple awards in 2007 and 2008; ‘Innovator of the Year' by Independent Cosmetics Manufactures and Distributors. As well as winning the 2008 prestigious Cosmetic Executive Women's, ‘indie' award*. (*considered the Oscars of the beauty industry). Nancy also suffered a massive brain aneurysm and made a miraculous recovery from her near fatal death. She is now working on a book dealing with the subjects of adversity, spirituality and business. This week we watch a controversial doc directed by Andrew Jarecki (The Jinx) about Arnold and Jesse Friedman a father and son accused of abhorrent crimes against young boys after The Friedmans house is raided. When Chris Shiflett left No Use for a Name and joined the Foo Fighters in 1999, he almost had no gear. The band was rehearsing to support their third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose, and leader Dave Grohl was doing an inventory check on their newest member. “Dave asked me how many guitars I had, and I said, ‘Well, I have two, but one has a broken headstock,'” recalls Shiflett. “Dave chuckled and said, ‘We gotta get you a few more guitars.'” The duo ventured down to Sunset Boulevard hitting all the guitar shops and Grohl gifted Shifty a pair of Gibsons (that we'll meet later). (This story is even more proof that Grohl is one of the coolest rock stars ever.) “I had been going to some of those Sunset stores since I was a teenager, and they're never nice to you because they know you're not buying anything. So, when I went in there with Dave Grohl and his AmEx card, it was a real moment for me. Here I am joining my dream band, and he's like, get whatever you want … and he really meant it!” Shiflett's gear germination didn't stop there. “When I joined the band, I didn't have any pedals. And now my bandmates constantly make fun of me for the size of my pedalboard—it's ridiculously big and there are a lot of pedals on it—but my view has always been, ‘as long as I don't have to carry it around, bring them all [laughs].'” But they all serve a purpose and allow Chris to stand out in a three-guitar band. “I do love that my role in Foos over the years has become the color guy with all these pedals.” His growth as an artist doesn't stop there. Shiflett's put out punk albums in Jackson United and for nearly 25 years, he sparked endless good times in the best punk-rock cover band (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes). In 2010, he shifted his creative outlet to busting out alt-country twangers and Bakersfield barroom bruisers as Chris Shiflett & the Dead Peasants, and then, later, solo. Since 2013, he's been hosting a podcast (https://walkingthefloor.com/ (Walking The Floor with Chris Shiflett)) that's featured conversations with https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/mammoth-wvh (Wolfgang Van Halen), https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/mike-campbell-rides-again (Mike Campbell), https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/greta-van-fleet-2021 (Greta Van Fleet), https://www.premierguitar.com/rig-rundown-billy-strings (Billy Strings), and recent Rig Rundown subject https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/marcus-king (Marcus King). Where does the dude find the time?! Following Foo Fighter's recent Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at L.A.'s Kia Forum to honor their dearly departed drummer, Shiflett carved out some precious time and invited PG's Chris Kies to the Foo's HQ, Studio 606. The laidback conversation covered his essential live guitars (including a not-so-golden '57 Les Paul and a few gracious gifts from Grohl), some custom Friedmans, and a pair of unusual AC30 stacks that only he and Sir Paul have … and all his pedals that sting, sparkle, shimmer, and sizzle.
A documentary filmmaker's relationship with their film's participants, or "subjects", is one of the most important but challenging parts of making a film. The director might have to consider: What are the boundaries of my relationship with the subject? Should the subjects be paid? What effects will my film have on the subjects' lives? These questions are at the heart of the new documentary, SUBJECT, from directors Jennifer Tiexiera and Camilla Hall. The film examines the ethics of documentary filmmaking through interviews with industry gatekeepers, as well as subjects of some of the most notable documentaries like Hoop Dreams, Capturing the Friedmans, The Square, and The Staircase. On this episode, Jennifer and Camilla talk about the experiences that inspired them to make SUBJECT, and how filmmakers can apply the film's themes to their own work.To learn more about SUBJECT visit https://www.subject.film/Rough Cut on InstagramVideo Consortium on InstagramHost Jennie Butler on InstagramExecutive Producer Sky Dylan-RobbinsProducer Amy DiGiacomo on Instagram and TwitterProducer Caley Fox ShannonProducer Abhishyant KidangoorEditor Audrey Horowitz on InstagramGot an idea for an episode? Returning Home 21OCT2021 - PODCAST
Getting to this episode has been a journey. I took a break in May 2021, after producing 59 episodes, with plans to return in September 2021, at the start of the Jewish New Year. Then my wife and I bought a house, and life got busy with housework. Then my mother's illness took a turn for the worse and life got busy with life.My mother died on September 14, 2021. We buried her a few hours before Kol Nidrei, which means this is the first episode of Modern Torah that she'll never hear. In her memory, and in keeping with the theme of this week's parsha—Lech L'cha—I hope you'll indulge me in sharing a bit of my family history. Four generations after my grandfather's grandfather put his trust in G-d and placed his son Reuben on a boat bound for Ellis Island the Friedmans are still here, still thriving, and still growing. This episode is dedicated to the memory of my grandparents Irving David Friedman and Elaine Marion Ellias Friedman, to their parents Max Sam Ellias & Florence Spilg Ellias and Reuben Friedman and Yetta Gordon Friedman, and to my mother, Margaret Joy Friedman Vaughan. May their memories be blessing.Shabbat shalom—————I'm not a rabbi, so every week I look at our Torah portion and try to put it in conversation with the modern world around me. Judaism is rich in tradition, and each of us deserves the chance to find our own meaning in the text. Just remember, like the text itself says, “there's nothing new under the sun.”Modern Torah is written and produced by me, Nathan J. Vaughan. My special guest is Dr. Daniel Friedman, who's here to discuss his book The Strange Case of Dr. Doyle: A Journey Into Madness and Mayhem. London. 1910. A procession of well-attired gentlemen and ladies are clearly out of place among the stalls and pushcarts of the Whitechapel District. As the group makes its way through the crowded streets, the tour guide stops now and then to point out various places where the mutilated bodies of the women had been found. Although the murders occurred twenty-two years prior, the man leading the group seems to know every detail and aspect of each slaying. He offers his insightful conjecture freely of those things he does not know. This is, however, no average tour of brutal acts. It is a close look at infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper's trail of blood. And the man leading the group is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - the famous creator of the fictional character Sherlock Holmes, the world's greatest detective. In The Strange Case of Dr. Doyle, we learn what draws one famous Englishman to another in ways that are as fascinating as they are shocking. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle led a tour group to the sites of the Whitechapel Murders in 1905. While we do not have a description of that tour, authors Daniel Friedman, MD, and Eugene Friedman, MD, have meticulously pieced together Doyle's own words to create a riveting account of his publicly stated beliefs on each of these horrific murders. As Doyle takes the group on his tour, the reader learns about the victims and how each died. The authors have also included new pieces of evidence to understand better the murderer known to history only as Jack the Ripper. Interspersed throughout the tour is the Friedmans' unique and well-researched account of the life of the young Conan Doyle, which was shrouded in more mystery than any of his works of fiction. The authors have uncovered facts about which few, if any, Doyle biographers have ever been aware. A work of profound scholarship, mystery, and controversy. Elementary, indeed!
